- After hearing Mdou (from the city of Agadez in Niger) on the wonderful Music for Sahara cellphones compilation, I invited Mdou and his band to my home in Berlin where we exchanged our music for a week. During this period I recorded a softspoken hypnotic, mesmerizing jam called J'ai pas le choix. I want to thank Christopher Kirkley, a contemporary Alan Lomax, who is releasing really special stuff on his SahelSounds label. (Thomas Azier).

Planant de douceurs musicales. Lancinant d'émotions simples. Une belle chanson. Envoûtante de tristesse. On ressent la délicatesse quand bien même le titre révèle l'histoire "j'ai pas le choix". Un bonbon. Caramel en textures fondantes et une complainte étirée. Seulement mon interprétation. "Vive l'amour" sous des basses fréquences.

Wonderful melody, hypnotic groove, the words can mean anything you want. The 12 string has a sitar like quality, love this jam.

I first heard his electric guitar songs, and was hooked. But his voice is so soft, I think this acoustic rendition is even better. May be his hard rock needs a louder voice ? I hope there will soon be CD's with acoustic music from Mdou. He is great !
