    ***CORRECTION: When I mentioned the TRD red interior as my fourth point, it turns out the TRD kit I was referring to was merely an exposed carbon add on kit. Turns out the red interior is optional on Japanese spec vehicles, see the reddit post here for more info: www.reddit.com/r/GR86/comments/1049dh4/interior_of_taiwanese_version_gr86/

    I agree the mark ups are terrible in my area. The GR86 had a 7K markup but I ended up with a BRZ allocation for MSRP. And the BRZ comes with the red and black interior so that’s a win too.

      Nice! Glad to hear you got it for a good price. Subaru has been much better with MSRP than toyota has, I called up the subaru dealer that my sister got her Legacy from and asked about the BRZ, they told me that not only can you actually custom order a vehicle (toyota doesn't technically take custom orders, the dealers just bounce around vehicles till they get you something that's close enough), they will also sell it at MSRP guaranteed.
      Honestly if I wasn't so drawn to the Neptune blue and the GR86 front end I'd have just gone with the BRZ. I hope you enjoy yours!

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  Рік тому

      honesty I am glad that toyota understand the market for this car and they are offering a better sounding exhaust from factory, but at the end of the day most people are gonna be swapping the exhaust for something aftermarket regardless of whether the car came with the stock exhaust or the GR performance exhaust. I do wish that toyota just sold all units of this car with that GR performance exhaust as factory, it wouldn't be as cost effective for them but it'd be much better for the consumer at the end of the day

      Mine came with the GR exhaust option from the factory, it was on the window sticker. I’m mixed on it, it some times drones Highway and I drive long distances with it sometimes. But on the track it’s perfect as it gives just enough feed back to hear through the helmet. I had the internal audio turned off before I took delivery.
      I also paid $750 Below MSRP in January 2023.

      Glad to hear prices are going down. I know back when I was looking there were absolutely dealers that would sell the car at MSRP, but they were quoting wait times upwards of 12 months. This was back in July 2022, looks like their estimations weren't too accurate lol.

    Good points. My son owns a 2023 base model that he bought for about $30,000. His trade (VW GTI) brought $15,000, so he did OK. His first tweak of his GR86 will be a cat-back system to address that weak exhaust note. As for dealer mark-ups, it has reached pandemic levels. For example, Ford had to step on their dealers pretty hard in order to stop them. Dealer greed, combined with a willingness by some buyers to pay any price to be early owners, has seriously hurt the process of buying a car.

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  Рік тому +1

      Glad to hear your son got a GR86! I hope he's enjoying it. I agree, a cat-back system is much needed for this car. The main exahust pipe isn't much of an issue sound-wise, but the muffler is absolutely massive and drowns out the boxer noises. I couldn't agree with you more as far as pricing for this car, too often do I see some listed online for way too much over sticker price, it's a shame for sure.

  • @JasonYergin
    @JasonYergin Рік тому +6

    Just an an unequal length header to the stock exhaust if you want a little more sound. That will also give you that boxer rumble. Obviously you know the bulbs can be changed out super cheap and easy. I'm pretty sure your wipers are just worn out already. You'll be changing wipers pretty frequently and of course Rain-X helps like you said. Black is all anyone needs on an interior, nuff said 😄 and for sure, mark-ups are straight up evil. I had a crazy experience looking for one due to the mark up, I went to so many dealers and not only in my state but others. The craziest one was when at 7:00 AM a call woke me up and when I picked it all sleepy, there was a lady on the phone and she said she worked for a dealer which I forgot the name of it, she said: Oh hey I see that you where looking for a GR86, we have one in transit would you like to reserve it, and the first thing I asked was, Does it have a mark up? She said yes which I totally expected but she said, Oh yea is $34,000 and so I said, oh that's not that bad for a premium model, so the total price is $34,000 with the mark up then? GET READY, guess what she said. Oh no, THAT IS the mark up. The only thing that came to mind was, you kidding me right? You trying to sell a $31,000 car for $65,000. She said with a low and proud voice, oh yea because they are hard to come by. I hanged up. I really wish I was lying.

The whole production run here has been sold out in like two months and they really make you feel that it's a privilege to have been able to order one. A bit crazy for a car that seems to shout "Keep it cheap!!" al the time. But hey, it is what it is. We have it her too, but I think in general the markup thing in the US is much worse. It sucks.

When I asked the sales rep about it he told me that toyota had already sold out all their 2022 model year cars, so they started shipping out the '23 M.Y. already. I actually spoke to a subaru sales representative before getting my GR86 and they also confirmed subaru sold out of '22 M.Y. cars, and if I were to place an order it would arrive in about 6 months as a 2023 model.

    Manuals are much sought after due to social media marketing. I bet there’s many first time manual buyers for this model since social media praises a manaul over an auto. Hence 10k above and some dealers slap adm on manual and not auto or you can order auto but not manual since waiting list is so much greater

    • @relatablerides
      @relatablerides  Рік тому +1

      Yeah the demand for the manual is definitely strong on this model, but honestly that just gives dealers an excuse to mark up a car that isn't meant to be expensive. At the end of the day paying more for the "standard" transmission defeats the whole purpose. My vehicle is an auto, I preferred that transmission as I'm primarily using this as my fun daily driver in a decent chunk of traffic, and I paid 1k over sticker. I happened to luck out actually wanting the less sought after transmission. To think that my exact spec with a manual would easily sell for 5k over sticker is wild.

    • @GSTRification
      @GSTRification Рік тому +1

      It’s just supply and demand. Few dealers I reached out to are all msrp dealers and because demand is much higher for a manual model there’s a lot more people on the waiting list thus they are not taking anymore on the list. He asked if I wanted an auto because it can be allocated much faster. Btw I live in nyc/Manhattan and the traffic is everyday and dealer markups are highest in the nation. Yep, I'm saving up to get an exhaust hopefully by the summer time. If you get the right type of LED bulb it can scatter light just as well as the incandescants, it comes down more so to the housing itself rather than the bulb that's in it. After I applied the hydrophobic product to the windshield the wipers have actually been doing a really good job. Still a bit odd that it doesn't work super well from factory but that fix seems to be getting the job done for me. For the interior color I'd say that red would only work well with a handful of exterior colors, neptune blue not being one of them 😅. Which exterior color did you get? But yeah as far as markups it seems to be a dealer thing here. It seems like toyota dealers finally have people passionate about buying cars, and they're taking advantage of it lol.

If the door is locked and you pull the handle, nothing happens. Door won't unlock or open. This isn't really an issue in daily use because the doors never auto lock to begin with. In most other Toyotas the doors will automatically lock when you shift out of park or drive above ~12mph, but in this car there's no option for that. GR86 is a nice-looking car and that is where it ends for me. Dealer Markups or the things that dealers do are B.S., anything for a larger profit over their invoice. On an MSRP $30K car, the dealer may have paid $25K. Note: Buyer always pays S&H Delivery fee. Vehicles are mostly allocated so there are fewer vehicles on the dealer's lot in the last 5 to 8 years. Dealers at times have price reductions or incentives or promotions such as cheap LED TVs or laptops for buying a certain vehicle. Depending on the location and size of the dealership, there are overhead costs of ownership just to stay in business. They won't stay in business if unable to make let's say $2k from each vehicle they sell. Do not expect a fair deal on your Trade-in. If you paid $40K 3 years ago and have 30K miles, you might get 60 to 70 percent of its value $24K to $28K, whereas selling it privately gets you $29K to $33K. The dealer needs to make a profit and besides they have no idea how soon they can resell it, plus the cost of any repairs.

    • @relatablerides

      That's all absolutely facts. You articulated it very well too. The GR86 is definitely worth it as an entry level sports car, when all you're paying is the MSRP plus destination. Anything more than that and it's just unwise financially and not worth it for what you're getting.

Folks call it affordable, however for the size engine, aluminum body, cheap interior the car really should cost in the low 20 grand. It's a shame. I left the Mustang world, in favor of this car. Wanted a change. After owning the GR 86 now for 5 months and 4,000 miles on it, I just find the level of quietness to be ridiculous. I'm just changing up to an axel back exhaust to get some sound our the back. As far as the cabin goes, I just have base cloth. It's livable, but it needs some bit of color. I'm contemplating going with a leather install company and changing it out. My big complaint about this car is quickness. The 0 to 60 in 6 seconds is ridiculous for a car this light. The goal for this car should have been at least 275 hp. Get that 0 to 6 time down to at least 5 .2 seconds. The car looks great, handles great, with more quickness for be a real competitor out there, more well rounded.

      I can't argue with any of your points. Honestly I feel like the reason toyota/subaru are pricing this car the way that they are (assuming no dealer markups) is because of the low production numbers. They wouldn't be able to warrant the high production cost and factory line space for a vehicle that isn't gonna sell as well as a RAV4 for example, so to make up for that they have to increase the price. I do agree with you on the realistic price of a car like this, it should be about 20k.
      As far as the quietness of the exhaust, I don't think I properly illustrated my dislike for it in my video. I made it my first point because it's by far the most annoying part of this otherwise great vehicle. If you watch the segment of this video (ua-cam.com/video/BFBeL-Em9MU/v-deo.html) where 86speed installs the AWE Touring exhaust, I honeslty think that toyota/subaru should have give us an exhaust that at least sounds remotely similar to this one from factory. I'm personally looking to buy the Touring edition with black painted tips once I save up enough money for it. That coupled with disabling the active sound control module will bring this car to life.
      I can see your point about the 0-60 time, it's definitely not as good as it should be but that was never inherently the goal of this car. If you wanted a faster 0-60 you'd get a supra. If instead you wanted a car that was fun to drive, well balanced and handled as well as a porsche then you'd get the GR86. I personally never felt like the car was lacking in speed from a launch, but I suppose coming from a mustang that weighs more yet is still faster would be a different story.
      In any case, this is meant to be a tuner's car. Once companies start coming out with supercharger kits and turbo kits for this car we're gonna start to see numbers well north of 300hp on E85. We're already seeing GR86's with only headers and an exhaust being tuned to make 20-25 horsepower over stock, and those numbers are only gonna go up with more aftermarket components.

      I did, I actually spent a good chunk of time deciding if I wanted to get the GR86 or the Miata (the BRZ was a write off for me, I never loved how the front end looked vs. the GR86). At the end of the day I opted for the second gen 86 after seeing how much they improved the technology (and of course the torque dip) and how ridiculous the prices for the first gen models were. I remember seeing a 2013 first gen 86 with like 65k miles going for a little under 30k (and most other listings were between 25-30k for similar years/mileage), and I couldn't justify spending that much on such a heavily modified car when the new one is supposed to be 30k MSRP. I also considered looking at more powerful coupes like the mustang/camaro, the 350/370Z and a few BMW and Audi coupes, but at the end of the day they had a lot more features than I cared for, weighed too much, and were far too powerful for everyday fun on my commute. What models did you have in mind as a good alternative to the GR86?

I think I would rather stick with naturally aspirated engines but will consider a turbo assisted motor. I have never owned a turbo and I have been keeping most of my new car purchases for at least 10 years.
      Supply is too low on manual transmissions. My other alternatives of particular interest, depending on the buy price of course, Acura Integra A-Spec, Civic SI, and the Hyundai Elantra N. I thought about the Mustang GT or Challenger R/T but I think I am too spoiled to better fuel mileage and reliability of the foreign manufacturers mentioned. The Acura is more than what I want to pay but would give me lots more room and storage for vacations, but it is supposed to be better than the Civic SI and to me it looks much better, I just don't want to pay their price. I really like the somewhat odd appearance of the Elantra N because it is distinctive like the Mazda3 and the BRZ/GR86. Anything I buy will have to come with a manual transmission. I still love driving my 2006 Mazda3 sedan with a manual and I will continue to shop waiting on prices to fall back in line. I realize that may be a little while but right now I am being patient.

      I wouldn't personally consider the new mazda3 premium hatchback as a good competitor to the gr86, as they're fundamentally different cars. One is a two door, four seater front engine rwd sports car while the other is a fwd (or awd) four door five seater hatchback with decent handling but an otherwise lackluster driving experience. I hate using this term because it's somewhat insulting to non-sports cars, but it's "normal traffic". I don't mind the styling at all, but I wouldn't put them up against each other, as the only thing they share is the price point. Same kinda thing generally goes for the acura, civic and elantra, as they're all fwd sedans. Again, the only thing they share with the gr86 is the price point. Not to say they're bad cars or they wouldn't be good for specific use case scenarios, just for the sake of comparing apples to apples throwing those cars against the gr86 doesn't compute for me. I agree on the elantra N though, it does look pretty interesting. In an alternate universe I definitely would have gotten an elantra N, especially with that exhaust note.
      NA engines are good, but you always gotta push them to their limit to get all the power. Turbo cars make the power delivery much more natural and effortless, every time I go from the gr86 to my parent's alfa romeo giulia with a 2.0l turbo 4 I realize just how much difference having a turbo can make. I'm seriously considering either a supercharger or a turbo for the gr86 in the coming years, after I've gotten fully comfortable with the chassis and how it handles. I think the extra power will do wonders with the balanced chassis.
      sorry it took so long to respond, I'm still trying to figure out how youtube comments get organized with new comments vs. replies vs. mentions, etc. I appreciate your patience!

      So yeah I am able to afford this while going to school, but just barely 😅. I'm lucky enough to have gotten a full ride scholarship to my uni, so I don't have any loans at all and my parents are very supportive on the other fronts (housing, food, etc.). I was also able to put down roughly 13k, which made the monthly payments manageable given my working situation (but again, just barely. Basically, 90% of my paycheck every month goes towards this car through capital, insurance and gas. That's fine for my situation given the aforementioned scholarship and supportive parents). At the end of the day I can't tell you whether or not it makes sense to get this car without knowing your whole financial situation, but I can tell you that it is a car worth getting if you can afford it. For the value there's not much else you can get brand new that ticks as many boxes as this car does.

      @relatable rides hey so I wanted to give some time to pass and I now have 10 grand saved up for a down payment on the car. My mom is actually really supportive and she's told me she's willing to help me out (food, housing, clothes etc) if she needs too as long as I stay in school ( which I am ) but I don't really like the amount of gas my old beat up 4runner wastes just to drive to work. Long story short on the 4runner, my dad passed away and I was left with it. I couldn't ever get ride of it.. for sentimental reasons. I just don't like it cause it's not for me personally. However, if you don't mind, how'd you finance the remaining amount for the car? Did you go through a bank or through the dealership? I'm getting real close to ordering mines and just want to get an idea of someone who's already done it.

      @@richard9799 Glad to hear you're making progress! So as far as my financing went, I had my dad officially purchase the car under his name so he could get a good interest rate (as you know interest rates right now are terrible), he was able to land 4.25% through his own bank with his excellent credit. I wanted to see if the bank would approve me for the loan, but I didn't get approved given the loan amount and my current income. Long story short, my dad took out the loan in his name to get me a good interest rate, and I'm paying off the car with what I make. Also, fuel-wise the GR86 isn't too bad at all. I'm averaging 21mpg with mostly city, some highway driving and I refuel about twice a month at ~$38 each time, and I drive roughly 400ish miles a month. Did you get final pricing on a specific vehicle through a dealership yet? More than likely the online prices you see listed aren't gonna be anywhere near what you'll end up paying (taxes, fees, dealer accessories, etc).

However, I plan on doing the same, using my mom's name on the car so she can land me better interest rates and a better insurance cost as well. However, my question to you is, what company did you and your dad use for the loan? And what was the term ( 60 or 72 month )? Only If you don't mind answering.

We've got it on a 60 month plan right now, but when we refinance he's planning on shortening the term. I will tell you though, 35k might not be the price you end up paying. Is that the window sticker price or the online price or the out-the-door price? Usually they increase in that order, with the window sticker being the lowest and the out-the-door price being the highest. If youHe's planning on refinancing it once the rates go down again. If 35k is the online price expect to actually pay closer to 40-42k depending on tax rates and dealer fees (title, registration, whatever other stuff the dealer tacks on there). If 35k is your out-the-door price, you're in a really good place. You won't be financing a massive amount, and if you cosign with your mom you can even improve your credit score. Hope this helps.
