If I remember right 0080 had the same mecha designer as patlabor, and yeah the Helldiver’s limbs really give me a Mass Produced Guncannon vibe

Yep, that's a very Izubuchi design.

While the Ingram's head very strongly resembles that of a Jegan.

Those lifting panels on the side of each leg work as airbrakes to help slow the descent of the labor when performing parachute drops. You can see an example of this in the intro to the Patlabor movie. Epic scene!

The Helldiver are Labors built specifically for the JGSDF. If I recall, I believe the one with the colored forehead was for one of the characters in the anime who a captain in the JGSDF who also a reoccurring character that appears throughout the anime. Despite how badass looking they are, in the anime they often get their asses whooped by enemy Labors which always ends up having Ingram 01 and 02 having to save the day.

They are basically labor-paratroopers, they also appear in the first Patlabor movie, destroying the rogue red type X-10. The character you're thinking of is Captain Fuwa, and yes, her platoon often crosses path with the SV2.

For what it's worth, the series has been pretty clear on the notion that militarized humanoid Labors largely just don't work, even the Ingrams don't really work that well- they're form over function. Labors are best as construction equipment. Patlabor played physics more straight than others, so the humanoid designs like the Brocken, Helldiver, and even the Ingram just don't really perform well enough to merit their massive costs

    • @lordwisehammer

@@gtf234 I'd argue that they are pretty effective at what they do, they just require a lot of support. We only ever see the Helldivers go up against a Brocken and the Griffon, they take out the former with no trouble and the latter is an absolute monster made with no budgetary concessions whatsoever. I don't think the show try's to say that the Ingrams are ineffective just that running a Patlabor force will be expensive and incur repair costs no matter how good the machine is as well as make fun of bureaucrats and how fickle public opinion can be. I think it's made clear a couple of times that if he aimed for the cockpit Ohta could end most engagements instantly and all the damage comes from them avoiding killing the perpetrators because they're cops not soldiers.

    • @gtf234
      @gtf234 3 роки тому +2

@@lordwisehammer The series is very open about how flimsy the human shape is at that size, the square cube law is a bitch. Right at the start of the series Clancy puts an Ingram out of service for months of repair labor from just her test run thanks to a single action roll. The Ingrams are wasteful money pits; Special Vehicles isn't even given the budget to maintain all 3 units. There's barely a 50% survival rate on the Helldivers doing the thing they were intended to do, ie jumping out of planes- half the time they break their legs on landing. It's repeatedly mentioned how poorly attempts to militarize labors have delivered returns on the investment but it hasn't stopped any of the industrial conglomerates from continuing to try.

There are more Labor kits in this line, the AV-X0 was released in March and the Griffon is coming out in August; with a few more prototypes revealed but not yet listed.

You can really feel the Izubuchi-ness in these designs. I imagine these could make for even better-looking 0080 GM kit-bashes than some of the official Bandai kits.

Here's my little suggestion for that split/seam line circular detail on the back of the head (this is based off my 35+ years of modeler experience). It will sound super complicated but:
    - Assemble the head and close the gap of the two halves as tightly as possible (without gluing/cementing the parts yet)
-(from a craft store such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby) get a silicone rubber putty kit and some UV casting resin.
-Make a mold of the circular detail on the back of the head (or one of the circular details around the helmet) and press the putty into it until it hardens into a silicone rubber mold of the detail.
-Drill a correct size diameter in the back of the head of the circular detail
-Using the UV resin, pour a small casting of it into the rubber mold and cure with a UV lamp/light.
-Voila! You will have a cast piece of the circular detail that you can lightly sand and assemble into the inside of the hole of the head. :)
Of course, easier said than done.

Hmmm... With a couple of modifications the Hell Diver can be converted into the training labor seen in the second movie. You might still need parts from the ingram kit though.

On the head detail with the seam in the middle, you can use a punch and die to cut out a small circular shape from .5mm plaplate to cover it and then redrill the center hole, etc. (circular cutters may not be able to make a small enough circle, so punch & die works better for making small details like that)

Patlabor plays physics a lot more straight than other robot shows, humanoid labors like this are really bad. Efforts to militarize labors have largely been unfruitful- the normal designs (which are at best construction equipment) don't do anything a tank wasn't already doing more efficiently and humanoid ones the Helldiver are greatly hampered by not being able to carry their own weight properly at that scale. Helldivers are intended to be paratroopers but shatter their legs on landing 50% of the time. Even the titular experimental patrol labors for the police don't actually work very well- they have ridiculous maintenance needs and while they CAN physically do anything a human body can, they really shouldn't because it destroys nearly all the mechanisms in their joints. Things like the Ingram patrol labor is expressly form over function- it was meant to LOOK impressive so the Tokyo Metropolitan Police appear to not be left behind by thugs, drunks, etc misusing labors for crime or mischief.
