What really kills is that this is a trio. All that sound from just three guys. In concert Geddy just reaches over and plays keyboards, sometimes while still playing his bass with his left hand. Neal is frequently given the accolade of being the GOAT of rock drum players. In a guitar player article they asked the question, "Is Alex Lifeson too good for rock and roll?" Three insanely talented musicians who stayed friends and elevated rock music to a different level

It's funny to see people's reaction the first time they hear this song, because all the changing tempos and styles are meant to sound like turning the radio dial. It's a very clever, very groovy song, and I've never seen anyone not like it.

The most underrated musicians of all time (in pop culture) were the members of the "Wrecking Crew" (although I do agree Lifeson is too often omitted from list of guitar greats).
Nobody has heard of 90% of them, and yet they provided more memorable tracks than anyone you can think of, and across almost every genre of music.
One guitarist who played for them for many years before he branched out and DID become famous in his own right was legendary guitarist Glen Campbell.

The song is meant to be someone changing stations on an old style car radio. That’s why there’s so many musical changes. My favorite detail though is the cascading sound (at 4:13 and elsewhere) is meant to sound like quickly spinning though an old analog radio dial.

Thanks for the video RIP Neil Peart. Young kids now have no idea of how much radio was apart of our lives back in the 60's and 70's. Rush best Canadian rock band ever. Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based station CFNY-FM-which had not abandoned free-form programming-is cited as an inspiration for the song, It's brilliant the transitions, is like changing the radio dial.

It's so great to see this music getting celebrated so many years later! I will never forget the first time I heard this. I had early release from school my senior year for work, installing car stereos. The t-tops were off in my 79' Formula Firebird and windows down, and as I was crossing the railroad track on FM 1960 in NW Houston, I switched the station just in time to hear the guitar intro and INSTANTLY knew it was a new Rush song. I CRANKED it -- I was smiling from ear to ear, looking around to the other cars like, hey y'all are you getting this!? (no one seemed as excited as me haha).

Put it on in the car running errands and this was the first song. Drove away from the record store on my next errand. Within a minute I pulled over to give the song my undivided attention.
I was already a fan. But this was…next…level…sh!t. Like these reactors, I was shocked at how creative, how brilliant this was. Couldn’t get enough of it. Kept running it back and playing it again.

This is one of my favorites from one of my favorite bands. I’m too stupid to figure out what they are talking about in the lyrics but the rest of the song is amazing. It has several styles and a funky groove that is unique and universal. Love the way they seamlessly transition the tempo and styles to include funk, raggae, rock and jazz maybe even a bit of bluesy guitar mixed in for shits and giggles. Amazing bass and guitar and of course the professor doing his thing masterfully as usual. RIP Neil we miss you sir.

Rush used to make a habit of playing a couple of songs from their upcoming album at the end of the show tour. They played this at the end of the Hemispheres gig I saw along with Jacob's Ladder. I then saw Rush for my final time on the Permanent Waves tour and we had front row seats. Some jerk was trying to push me away from the barrier where I was holding onto my spot for dear life...right there twenty feet away from Geddy Lee. Then they played this song again, and that jerk guy started doing that hand thing, which Geddy saw, and was nice enough to do it back to the guy as a friendly gesture.

    RUSH: MASTERS OF TIME SIGNATURES:
They don't sit down and say "Let's write in (x) time signature." They just write what they feel.
    Jacob's Ladder alternates between 5/4, 6/4 and 7/4, then 6/8 and 7/8.
    Limelight is 7/4 not 7/8.
The middle of La Villa (A Lerxst in Wonderland) is in 7/8.
Kid Gloves is in 5/4 for the intro and verses and 4/4 for choruses.
The Trees starts in 3/4, moves into 4/4 and the solo section is 5/4.

For me, the defining feature of RUSH's music is how clear it is. No muddyness at all. Every note, from every instrument is clear as a bell.

NEIL PEART’S NARRATION ON EXIT STAGE LEFT DVD:
There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know!
That’s one of the things I like most about the road that feeling of standing in the hall when the doors open feel the excitement bursting into the hall.
I must admit I feel very comfortable playing live a lot!
A very modern urban setting for that Tom Sawyer mentality and a very carefree stride and a very self-possessed kind of air.
Xanadu: The question we tend to ask the most often is WHAT IF? I think of you had to simplify a motivation or simplify a moving force in our music that would probably…suffice!
Red Barchetta: Well it seems to me a car is one of those handy metaphors and volumes have been written about the sociological and cultural impact of the car and what it represents but it also has a very fundamental sensual feel and it’s a metaphor for sexuality and freedom.
We’ve certainly tried to guide everything by the principles that were interested in and the freedom of choice and the material we’ve been playing and expression of music that we found to be exciting would excite other people as well.
If the songwriting is important and playing really well on stage is important it’s gonna make the difference between feeling good or not feeling good when I walk off stage feeling that I played as well as I can or as close to well as I can then I feel very satisfied and good for what you have done.
    YYZED:
I think there is a very strong relation maybe not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and phrasing and the rhythm of verse especially is very strongly rooted in the same syncopation as drums the same patterns of thinking overall work for me with words as much as they do with drum beats.

I don't think people are appreciating the lyrics in this song and how you have to basically sell your soul to get played on the radio back in the days.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music
    But glittering prizes
And endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity

It's amazing to see reactions from those that are like say 40 and younger. You always hear the term what was that switch up ? That's called a song or that's called music played by professional musicians. Not a droaning on and on over the same lame beat for 4 minutes. With no change at all. Those are called brakes and bridges. That can take you from one sound in one part of a song. And give you a different feel in another part of the same song. That's the way music was written and played / performed. Back in the '60s '70s '80s and '90s. For the most part anyway.

The reggae/ska section is truly unique, followed by one of Alex's best solos. Years later, Rush and Terry Brown came to odds over the Police-influenced Digital Man.

I can honestly say The Spirit of Radio has been my my favourite song from when I first heard it in 1979. It's too good and too much from arguably the BEST rock band ever! RUSH was severely marginalized and underrated for decades.

    Spirit of Radio
Means they were recording a song of somebody listening to the radio and spinning the dial to the next station, get it, & the next station, and the next and the next and the next …… definitely my all-time favorite song by Rush…. but I do love both 2112 and farewell the kings, the whole, damn albums,
It’s the only way you listen to those…❤

I'm not disagreeing...I just have a sincere question. Moving Pictures is a cool cover, especially when you dive into the intricacies. So, what makes Permanent Waves so good? (Better than Moving Pictures?)

    • @johnord684

@@correctlyrics Transition my friend,Hemispheres is a total different album and most Rush fans say their best .But Permanent waves is a transition between old and new .I really can't explain. Its like trying to explain the differece between Natural Science and the Camera eye Off Moving Pictures ,two great long songs on an epic scale ......but..............thats it i can't explain as its a personal thing in my head .

I always thought the "bridge" transitions were to simulate with music the change of radio stations on an analog FM radio.

FYI, the reason they played reggae for a bit, is because, in that section, they're actually playing several different ways to simulate changing the station.
