Fun fact: In the scene where Chaucer gives the big speech and the crowd is silent, that's because the extras for the crowd were all Czech (the film was filmed in Czechia) and didn't understand English, or at least not English to that level, so they didn't know that was their cue to cheer. Mark Addy then went "...YEAH!" and the crowd went with it, and it was so iconic that they kept it in the movie.
Yeah, I worked at Medieval Times back in the late 90s. Their lances were also balsa wood. We'd basically shred them with box cutters and then tape up the tips so they'd explode spectacularly... never used spaghetti though, lol.
Major props to Christopher Cazenove for playing Will's father. His performance gets me teared up every time! (so does the scene of Will being knighted)
9:35 this movie was filmed in modern day Czechia: in this scene, the crowd was supposed to cheer at Chaucer’s speech but since none of the extras spoke English, there was stunned silence. Mark Addy (who plays Roland and, yes, Robert Baratheon as well) adlibbed the “yeah!” and it was kept in the film.
As your editor pointed out, you've also seen Heath Ledger in Dark Knight. The other movie he's famous for is 10 Things I Hate About You, which is also amazing and I recommend reacting to it.
6:50 I love that doubletake. It’s like “wait, I know Guelderland!” This movie will always hold a special place in my heart. Anachronistic? Absolutely. Is it fun to watch? Most assuredly. And it got me into medieval stuff, including Chaucer (and, as an added bonus, it got me into Queen, too).
Such a fun movie. So glad you liked it. Everyone was great in this movie. Rufus Sewell always nails playing the bad guy and Paul Bettany is so underrated.
Yes! Not enough reactors watch this movie. :) I don't have many more movies with Heath Ledger, especially because you've seen The Dark Knight, but a really good movie to watch with Roland's actor, Mark Addy (Robert Baratheon), is "The Full Monty". He's so great in it.
another fun fact: several of the Czech stunt riders used to tour Europe medieval re-enactment markets and tournaments during the summer and after this movie came out they announced themselves with "We will rock you!" They were so proud that this movie had been shot in Czech Republic!
The music and the costume design is deliberately anachronistic. The logic is that jousting was the equivalent of the Super Bowl or the World Cup today. Since the audience would be so enthusiastic, they chose to use modern sporting memes to communicate the enthusiasm and the excitement. Same thing for the music and the dancing. The costume designer deliberately went after a medieval/rock star motif for the protagonists. They liked to party like it was 1360!
The film is set specifically in 1372 and features music from "the '70s". Just not those 70s. Also Chaucer apparently just went missing for like 6 months in 1372.
God, I forgot how much I love this movie. That scene where William is in the stocks and gets saved by the prince- you called it when Geoff came up and you thought he was about to say something. It's probably once of my favorite deleted scenes from any movie- the crowd is all antagonistic but then Geoff gives this passionate heartfelt speech about who Will really is (by far his best speech in the movie) and by the end of it the crowd goes from being mad at "Ulrich" to chanting his name. Geoff listens to them going "Ulrich, Ulrich, Ulrich" and yells "His name is WILLIAM!" and they all start chanting William. Amazing scene.
Seconded! Definitely Chaucer's best speech. I understand why they cut it (they felt it undercut Edward's intervention) but I would have much rather seen Will's own people turn the crowd, then have the Prince Ex Machina seal the deal by legitimizing him.
The DVD extras on this were great. It's not just the music, it's the Nike swooshes, the modernized version of the dances, the camera angles they used - they were really going out of their way to put a modern audience in the headspace of a person in that time visiting a big sporting event, or a dance, or even creating a branded product, and what that might have felt like for them.
What I love about this movie is the anachronism of it. The music is modern because it gives the audience the feeling the crowd at the time would have had. The pumped up feeling of excitement for the best sporting event they could attend. People are people throughout time, and it would have been awesome to be there, and they show that well.
This movie is firmly in my top 3 movies; it's not the best movie by most standards, but it's just so fun, funny, and touching. The cast is stacked with amazingly funny people who ended up going on to some extremely high profile roles. I also love the subtle way of insinuating that the modern music is the equivalent of the music they would have played at the time, this is hinted at by the horns, in the beginning, "playing" We will rock you and the chamber music morphing into the Bowie song for the dance.
This is one of my favorite movies from childhood! It’s a great entertaining comedy with heartwarming moments, and the drama parts are well balanced with the comedy. and the acting is great from the main cast ^^ I love the characters
Ledgers Must see list is The Patriot 10 things I Hate about You. (Teen comedy) This Lords of Dogtown (Teen Drama) Monsters Ball(tissues) Brokeback Mountain(Oscars) and The Dark Knight(Best Actor)
Actually my favorite movie of all time, I’m always so happy to see others enjoy it. The love, the relationships with others, the comedy, the music…. A man can change his stars 🥹
G'day from Australia. One of Heath Ledger's early movies and not one that is well known outside of Australia is called Two Hands. It is well worth watching and shows how good an actor Heath was going to be but being an Australian movie was basically ignored outside of Australia. This is well worth watching and reacting to.
Ooh, did not expect this movie here, very nice. Was the very first DVD I had. I know it is silly and ridiculous from a historical perspective, but i still love it as a movie.
When this came out it blew my mind, the choice of modern things like the music and dancing in this era... still in my top ten movies :) (also never knew about the final scene after credits >.
29:41 there’s actually a really good speech right here by Chaucer that they cut out of the theatrical version. Thankfully there’s a deleted scene of it :) I recommend checking it out sometime
A thatcher is a person that builds an fixes straw roofs. Thats why William both knew how to fix his fathers roof an took issue with a Thatcher having a leaky roof. Adamar telling him he tripped over straw was referring to the fact that fixing his fathers straw roof was his downfall.
Great reaction. And btw since you asked about other Heath Ledger movies, you should definitely check out "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999). It's basically a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of The Shrew". And of course, "The Dark Knight" (a 2008 Batman movie...Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his role). But if you're going to watch 'The Dark Knight', I would suggest first watching "Batman Begins" (2005...Heath isn't in this movie, but watching this first will help understand the sequel). Another good movie that Heath is in, is 'The Patriot' (2000) starring Mel Gibson.
Nobody ever seems to remember Casanova. It's a cheesy meandering romance movie but holds a fair bit of charm. Jeremy Irons as the "evil" Cardinal is a delight too.
When Adhemar says that one who strives to touch a star oft stumbles on a simple straw, he's referring to William's surname of Thatcher. Thatchers would make roofs of straw thatched together to keep out wind and rain. That's how many English last names came about, Baker, Smith, Fletcher, etc. They were their jobs, taught to their children, and the name carried on.
It's such a wonderful movie that got a lot of flack for all the modern stuff they inserted in, but it works really well with the movie, for a modern take on a classic tale. Oh, and for another fun tale of an unlikely knight, watch the 1966 Italian movie "L'Armata Brancaleone" :)
The part where no one is cheering and Roland starts the cheer to get the crowd going was actually real, the extras didn't speak English and didn't have a cue to start cheering. They kept that shot for the film.
Love this movie! There really are too few reactions to it, but maybe the music makes it easy to claim. This is my favorite Heath movie, The Dark Knight is my second favorite and you've watched that I guess I gotta suggest Brokeback Mountain next! Those are his three best performances imo. He's good in The Patriot too but that's as a supporting role.
the literary device used in the film is called an "anachronism." basically, it means placing a person or objects at a particular time and place in history but in wrong period. It's used very well in this film.
In the Extended Edition, Chaucer’s speech at the stocks is by far my favourite scenes. You should check it out or the Extended Edition itself is by far the best.
This was one of my old favorite movies. Thanks for the reactions. Kinda funny watching it now with King Baratheon, Vision/Jarvis, and Joker in it together.
Congratulations MARY!!!!! You´re Fifth person to watch A Knight`s tale. Earlier was year ago. So now your a one of the forerunners, influencer and trendsetters. It all comes to that if many other people react to this movie in coming 3 months. I mean like douple digits of people react.
There's another movie with Heath Ledger, Mark Addy and Shannyn Sossamon, called "The Order". It's a horror/drama about members of an obscure catholic sect that fights demons.
One of Heath Ledger's best movies is an under rated movie called Four Feathers. Amazing movie and very heartfelt and positive while still being an epic tale of love ,friendship, family and loss. I would love to see a reaction to that and I think others would too.
I love this movie so much... And I am so glad you enjoyed it! The contrast between this role, and the Joker, shows what we lost when we lost Heath Ledger... And could you GET a better backup crew than who he had in this movie?!
8:00 That's exactly why she's wearing white! In many ancient cultures, being able to wear clean white clothing marked you as wealthy, since you needed a bunch of servants to actually keep it clean and replace it as soon as it began to fray. The poorest people would also wear white, because undyed cloth was cheapest, but their lack of wealth resulted in that clothing quickly becoming brownish and tattered. The contrast between the two appearances of the same color was what made the wealthy stand out more.
I must've seen this movie dozens of times. I always roll my eyes when people say this, but they really don't make them like this anymore. It's just pure, heartwarming fun. Great dialogue, great physical comedy, great emotional conclusion. It's the definition of underrated.
As this is based on a story from the Canterbury Tales, by Chaucer... Heath Ledger was also in a retelling of Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew." A modernized teen romantic-comedy called "10 Things I Hate About You"
Heath Ledger is also fun in the romantic comedy, 10 Things I Hate About You, a modern take on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, set in an American high school.
The red haired guy is Alan Tudyk who does lots of voice acting and live acting. Tucker & Dale vs Evil, Firefly, Dodgeball, Rogue One (K-2SO), IRobot (Sunny), Wreck-it Ralph (King Candy)
This is a great movie. Some criticized the music choice, but I think it was a great idea to keep the movie fun, which is all it was meant to be. They did the same kind of thing with a Mathew Broderick movie in the 80s called "Ladyhawke", which I also recommend watching.
King Robert Baratheon did such a good job at playing Roland, as if he were a common peasant. On a side note, Geoffrey Chaucer is a famous writer in English, back in the olden times.
You kept noticing actors you recognised from other shows…. You will soon get to see Laura Fraser again (the actress who plays Kate in this movie) in Breaking Bad. She plays a character called Lydia in BB.
Oh and Ten things i hate about you 1999, is the Heath Ledger movie from my generation growing up that a lot of people reference, it's a modern taming of the shrew remake. A Highschool teenage setting, which is another romantic comedy. Something more serious and widely praised is The Dark Knight 2008 where he plays the joker expertly, that was one of his last and he passed away while it was still being filmed sadly.
First, I want to take the opportunity to wish you a Happy Holiday, Mary! I hope the weekend (and the whole holiday season is amazing! I was so happy when I saw this reaction had been posted. This movie was my first exposure to Heath Ledger, Paul Bettany, and Alan Tudyk, all of whom played such iconic roles that I saw later (The Joker, Vision, and Wash from Firefly) that have stuck with me ever since. This movie doesn't get enough love, IMO, and it's always nice to see someone watch it and enjoy it. As always, I'm looking forward to your next reaction, whatever it may be. 😄
More recommended movies with these actors - Heath Ledger (William Thatcher): The Dark Night (almost compulsory), The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, Casanova, Ned Kelly (and everything else he's done; he's just that good). Mark Addy (Roland): The Full Monty. Paul Bettany (Chaucer): Master & Commander, Wandavision (OK a TV series). Alayn Tudyk (Wat): Firefly/Serenity, Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Laura Fraser (Kate): Titus (but not for her performance, just because it is a great film based on one of Shakespeare's worst plays IMNSHO and features both Anthony Hopkins and Alan Cummings chewing the scenery for all that it is worth), Neverwhere (an early Gaiman TV series adaption, although Gary Bakewell was a bit of a non-entity, but it also features Paterson Joseph and Peter Capaldi making up for the lack). Rufus Sewell(Count Bastard I mean Ademar): Dark City. Sadly the reason there are so few movies that feature everyone else apart from Heath is that they are absolutely brilliant supporting actors whose job it is to make everyone else look good.
I love Chaucer!
I wouldn’t be surprised if that scene was improvised. It gave me chills and feels!
This is a fantastic bit of movie trivia thankyou 😊
Had no clue but it fits and I love it
I was gonna comment the same thing. Thank you dvd bonus features.
One of my favorites. Rip Heath
Fun fact: the lances were filled with dry spaghetti and balsa wood so they splintered and exploded when hit lightly
Pasta la Vista
Yeah, I worked at Medieval Times back in the late 90s. Their lances were also balsa wood. We'd basically shred them with box cutters and then tape up the tips so they'd explode spectacularly... never used spaghetti though, lol.

Honestly he's been amazing in everything he was in
And Brokeback Mountain, obviously.
The Joker being helped to win jousting tournaments by Wash from Friefly, Robert Baratheon from GoT and Vision from the MCU is something else.
A king, a joker, a vision, a nobody (doom patrol ;-) )
Yup, those actors have had different roles than this movie.
@@Eidlones previously on On Hindsight

But it doesn't take me out of it, if anything it draws me in more.
Mary, did you notice, the red haired friend was "Wash" from "Firefly ? 😆 👍
He also played "Steven" the pirate from "Dodgeball" ❤ 🎥
We have a pirate on the team!!??
Alan Tudyk. Watch his show "Resident Alien", currently in its 3rd season(series for those overseas) on SYFY. Dude is genius.
And "sir ector" the actual knight, is played by Nick brimble who played little John in Robin Hood -prince of theives

The Full Monty is an excellent movie.
Good shout with the Full Monty
Totally different genre, but a fun film with Heath Ledger... 10 Things I Hate About You is well worth watching.
The Full Monty. That scene where their dance song starts playing in the unemployment line lol
4 FEATHERS is my favorite Heath Ledger movie. Such a good movie and he was so ooooo good in it

Another of his movies that is worth a watch is 10 Things I Hate About You. It's a teen romantic comedy, but it's really good.
The gorgeous young lady blacksmith you almost recognized was Lydia from Breaking Bad.
I'm so ready for more people to react to this! I love this movie!
Heath Ledger in "10 Thing I Hate About You". Decent movie based on "The Taming of the Shrew".
Heath also did a movie called 2 hands. Not very popular but one of his earlier movies. I like it. His iconic Joker roll out weighs many others.
Love this movie! Ten things I hate about you is a fun Heath Ledger movie to watch at some point.
Brian Helgeland wrote (IMHO) two great films, this and LA Confidential. Does anyone know whether any of his others were this good?
Literally just decided I wanted to check out a reaction to this movie and saw you had just uploaded. It was meant to be!!!
3 great Heath ledger movies. Two Hands, Candy and Ned Kelly. All Australian films
Mary. Still one of my favorites. a recomendation 10 Things I Hate about You. Rom Com but a good one. Heath and Julia Styles
Was coming down to post this as well. 10 Things is one of my favs.
Another great movie is 10 Things I Hate About You or Btokeback Mountain which is a classic must watch.
