Except it isn't a gamechanger. The problem of photogrammetry is that it lacks the flexibility for lighting, modeling and post processing, which is no-no for 3d game development

This is the future of any game, not just racing. Incredible realism with lighting/materials/dimensions, I can't think of any manually created track in 3d that matches this. Great work!
It truly is. L.A. Noire used this technology to record faces, many game companies use photogrammetry for static objects and I believe (Assetto Corsa?) used this to scan the road surfaces of certain tracks. No, actually, AC used laser scans for the track surfaces.
The issue is you still need to do the materials or else you'll have very static and disconnected lighting. While this might give devs a head start. There's still tons and tons needed to refine his track.
Not just lighting but the details and has all kind inconsistency in colours and walls which is real. Objects other than buildings and road with true colours makes this scan complete to play.

@@Berci1511 Of course it's technically possible, but an insane amount of work and effort would be required, and the game couldn't look like in the video (which is impressive, but not up to video game customer standards). But...it's technically possible. Judging from what we've seen in so far games history, that means it's a matter of time and interest of the public. I mean, basically all you need is a studio that can do it, some demos and between 200 million and a billion dollars in crowdfunding money.
If you've read the article you'd have known that the creator of this map had tried that but the results were less than favorable. So he implemented photogrammetry and this is the result.

I know it's possibly a freebie with the technique but weirdly what gets me is the patches of discoloured tarmac getting replicated. Like if I knew this town it's THAT which would really give it a sense of place.

Damn, I grew up thinking about potential f1 street circuits around my hometown, and an extended version going from the city to the village where I used to spend the weekends, nordschleife style. This viddo just activated a whole area of my bran I had forgotten about. It'd be sick to see kerbs, barriers and publicity boards added to this circuit too!

@@DouglasThompson It's not really about the tech, a lot of tools are available to the public but because everybody uses photogrammetry for a different purpose, there isn't a complete workflow available. Automating the tidious task of fixing the meshes would benefit immensely from integrating an AI.
This dude is now gonna spend the next 6 months figuring out the best "line" to take thru town. For real tho this is next level stuff. Imagine when this get so simple anyone can do it and criminals use it to stimulate their getaway path
Elevations are from photogrammetry. But the road bumps are not captured accurately with photogrammetry, so the road surface is remodeled by hand over the scanned mesh.

Nothing short of amazing. I’ve had interest of doing this for my morning commute. It’s a mix of Monaco and some long straights. I bet you get a hard on playing this. Can’t imagine how longboat took to model all those buildings go true to life.
i bloody hope they do this for proper games... really!! i love that the road retains the subtleties of things like the little bridge bumb near the beginning, etc... also, nicely done editing the two clips together to be in sync. all very exciting!

This is so amazing! Imagine Euro Truck Simulator or any other driving sim creating complete landscapes or better said countries as you drive through them. They achieved it with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, why not the same with a driving sim. Wow it could be unbelieavble! Great stuff, thank you!

This would be amazing for a rally game with mod support. Just go out there and create your own rally stages.

Elevations are from photogrammetry. But the road bumps are not captured accurately with photogrammetry, so the road surface is remodeled by hand over the scanned mesh.
