If there's one thing you can normally count on when it comes to selling cars, it's that no single product gets an unchallenged run at a market sector. As soon as a new type of car seems as if it's enjoying some success, a whole slow of second generation rivals will wade in. Being first is rarely the profitable position. The Toyota Picnic got to the medium MPV market early, but the subsequent Renault Scenic made the big bucks. Likewise, few remember the Renault 5 Gordini but everyone will know about the Volkswagen Golf GTI's success in the hot hatch market. Smart seemed to be largely unopposed with its city coupe/fortwo when it came to premium micro city cars but one look at the company's balance sheets explained why. Nevertheless, Toyota recognised when economic conditions had swung in Smart's favour and in 2009 launched the iQ, a small car to keep them honest. Here's how to track down a good used example.

Driver from the states here (Texas) and the mrs and I own two IQs. One in black and one in white respectively. We only had the option of 1.3L 4cyl engines and after adding mods such as tinted windows, tires/low profile 18” wheels and the spoiler that Toyota made, these look even better. Very sad that Toyota stopped selling these in 2014 over here. Many drivers brake their necks seeing ours on the road. We really turned heads double parking in one space at a super market meet up after work one day. Target should have paid us for the foot traffic we brought them. Sadly in Texas everything is go big or go home 😞. What a pair we make 😂.
That is so true! The roads are wider too! My iQ is ideal for the Scottish back roads and tight historic towns.
Texas😂😂😂.....you are so short of space
Love tiny cars. I have a minute Daihatsu 3 cylinder. Can't get the IQ in Australia, never brought here. Everything's big in Texas, as they say! Cheers!
This bloke has reviewed every car ever made!
I love mine, purple, manual, loaded, perfect little car and weird enough to love.
*Love my used black currant coloured Scion IQ. I've driven it just over 30,000 miles in 3 years and it still feels like new with over 100k total miles on the engine and counting. Scion iQ is the single most reliable and safe micro-sub-compact vehicles on the market and the only Japanese Kei car made by Toyota readily available in the US.*
I always thought Kei cars were 660cc engined. The IQ isn't a Kei class......it's actually too big !
Once again sir I watched you Peugeot 107 video and now I've watched this video, your reviews are the best on UA-cam, in conclusion I've purchased both cars, 107 & iq all off your spot on reviews, keep up the gr8 work!
I chose the 107 because it has a spare wheel. It's a great car but how do they compare. I'd still like an iQ.
Thnxs a lot its a amazing small car for sure;) one of the best.
The build quality is brilliant
Thank you. my wife will need to hear this =)
Love it!
I have done 100k miles in mine over the past 8.5 years. Road trips up to 13 hours each way. Gone camping in the forest. Been in 4 accidents with no airbags ever going off. Do my own brakes, oil changes, and more. Amazing car.
Thanks for uploading this review!
👍
I’ve had my iQ four years, nothing fits me better then this car does. It only costs me £30pm insurance, I can park or U-turn practically anywhere and I can carry two, even three passengers! Don’t be fooled into thinking this car is dead slow, the gears are very long and you can build great speed!
How much is your road tax mate?
@@JanBanJoovi-ol1qv£0! 😉
Our family has had both Smart and an IQ. The Toyota is probably the best city car I have ever driven. Literally, the only bad thing in it is the CVT transmission. Everything else is astonishing. 10/10 would recommend (but with a manual gear)
It's taken a while to work out who this guy reminds me of.....Jonathan Pie. Just waiting for him to pause the review..and burst into explicitives
Nice review again, a friend of ours has one of these and loves it. They also made an up market Aston Martin IQ but it was a lot more expensive and I don't think they sold many.
Aston martin rebadged it the Cygnet, however only sold around 1500 cars due to an enormous asking price of around £40,000.
I have a 1.3 version and that new, in 2012, was £12799.
I have a 2009 1.0l and the original purchase price was just over £13k back then.
@@thomastalks3841 I do like the car, it is well made, good safety spec and usual Toyota reliability.
However the price was, in my opinion, just too high at the time compared to rivals such as Fiat's 500, which did offer more practicality and had a better interior design.
@@keithmartin1328 it was high for the time, fast forward to 2023 and you can pay £40k for a Fiat 500 which makes me miss the days of £13k cars. iQ holds their value too
Best urban car ever Toyota should have made GR version of it
Is this a re-upload? Picture quality looks low res.
I'm really looking forward to mine (2012, white, 37k miles) being delivered tomorrow. Your video clinched my decision
How far do you get on a full tank of gas?
@@justchillin5373 i have a 2012 (with significantly more miles around 85k), and average around 35ish mpg in chicagoland. multiply that by the 8ish gallon fuel tank as you wish
i will say, my experience is getting great economy in/between cities, but freeway (80ish mph) driving is rough around 28mpg.
@@justchillin5373 - No gas.
This one is petrol only.
@@ToxicVaccines_HivHoax what?
Comes across like an 80's video.
Btw, does toyota still make this car?
Lve this small compact car
IQ by name IQ by nature
1.3 100 HP? I want this car!!!
closer to 94, but yep. fiesty little bugger
Great little car
I love mine!
I want to buy a mini car for tight city parking. I already own a Honda Jazz, but I can't fit it into hmm... irregular parking spaces. I am considering a Smart fortwo, which is ideal size wise. But the IQ is cheaper and probably a better ride. What are your experiences people with parking in historical city centers? I see that it has a great turning cycle, but it is 30 cm longer than the Smart. On the other hand, it's one meter shorter than my Jazz. Advice is appreciated!
Drive one, it is so much better then the Smart the bit of extra lenght really doesn’t matter.
@@Zetep I did and I finally opted for the Smart. While Toyota is a competent car, I found the Smart much more fun and nippy to drive. I already have a Honda for longer trips so the Smart made much more sense with the auto box and the smaller footprint for parking around town...
The Toyota should be far more reliable than a Smart.
Hate to be a spoil sport but if you are considering buying an IQ with the smaller engine, make sure that the gearbox is ok, they have a common problem in that the 3rd gear becomes impossible to select resulting in a new gearbox.
Syncromesh breaking? If thats the case atleast you could rev match to change gears
1:36 - but it does suck in a hurricane!
There's a trd supercharger kit for it😅
Why did they discontinue this?!?
Because people were not ready to pay for quality and comfort. They went for smart instead (making the worst mistake imaginable).
Sales numbers. During the last years, the sales numbers were under 200 per year across europe. In 2015 i think it was under 100
@@AveragePootis not surprised has 12% boot space and is just not practical at all
@@xylophone3764 Its practical as a second car (like in our case, stepad had a wagon and mum had an iq) or if you live alone, or a couple without kids as it is really pretty spacious as a 2 seater.
It was killed by it's price, adjusted for inflation the base model was 26k euros over here in northern europe, and thats just too much for a small car
