Just did it today.... thank you so much for documenting this for the rest of us! While I'm sure it makes it easier the wipers, plastic and metal parts early in the video don't need to come off. ONLY the center bolt on the manifold itself is difficult with them still attached. I manage pretty easier with a swivel attachment. Now on to the transmission fluid change!!!!!
Video very helpful to see what I was up against. I just replaced my plugs yesterday. Definitely remove plastic and steel cowl under windshield to create space to work, a few screws and 2 plastic push-in clips. Push windshield side trims to the middle of the windshield and they will release then can be completely removed. Remove whole snorkel at throttle body and air box, don't bother removing elbow fitting (just annoying), flip snorkel to passenger side out of the way. On driver side of intake is square electric switch with rubber lines, simply remove mounting screw under switch, don't unplug electrical or remove rubber lines on switch, flip onto driver's side out of the way. On throttle body, do not remove coolant lines (that could introduce air into cooling system). Pull off all the breather lines only at front of intake only. Completely remove steel mounting brace at front of intake. Unbolt plastic intake from aluminum intake at rear then flip the whole intake to the passenger side with coolant lines attached. I used a bungee cord to hold intake out of the way while I replaced plugs. It looked a lot worse that it was.. no hesitation to do it again. The whole job taking my time, took me about 1-1/2 hour including chatting with the neighbor for a while..
Thank you for this! I absolutely HATE TOYOTA as well as they tried charging me $450 for a key for my 2012 Scion Locksmith $150 for two. I was charged $500 just to do a diagnostic and two wires fixed in my Prius by them. Now I need to put front struts on my Scion so hoping to find a video as well. 😊
Thank you so much. Saved me tons of time and money. Solved my misfire issue too. Bought used iQ with 95k miles looks like the owner never touched the sparkplugs.
Oops sorry if I missed one. I'm glad it helped you. When I was first trying to figure this out I figured I should film it to try and help someone else.
Thank you so much. I thought that the metal tray was welded. I have a P0303, and this makes it manageable. My miss is constant for the duration, then comes to normal operation again. I figure I have a bad coil pack, so might take a few more minutes to double check the diagnosis.
Thank you so much for your time to make this video and willingness to help others in the same boat! Google barely knows these cars exist and like you mentioned toyota knows it! Thank you for showing it can be a diy problem because looking at the engine bay your first thought is oh f all that! 😂
I have a good 30k more miles before I probably have to worry about this but you helped me a ton for when the time comes. Good video man don't sell yourself short thanks!
Exactly the same car and color. Thank you so so much. Very detailed and on point. If I could shake your hand buddy I would. You helped me out tremendously. I like to change my own plugs and do as much as I can on my car, because I want to know the job was done right or wrong. Thank you.
My mechanic charges me about a $100 to do this for me which is great cus I live in an apartment and there strick about working on cars. But it looks easy just wish I could do it my self. Thanks for posting
Hi I have an IQ 1.33 cvt gearbox, could the spark plugs be the reason of the engine sometines stays reved up, like going down a hill it's like on engine break. Also it is consuming a bit high, I belive about 27mpg. Thanks for any help.
+Manuel Ribarski I'm so glad it helped. I was frustrated at first when trying to even find the plugs. This car is definitely built in a way to get most people to go back to the dealer and spend a fortune on a cheap repair.
You do NOT unplug the positive battery cable!! Unplug the negative! Always! If you short the car or yourself by accidentally touching the car and the positive battery terminal, be it with your tools or your hands, you’ll have a whole lot more to fix than just spark plugs!! This is basic baaasic knowledge..
To change the plugs on the Toyota IQ just opened the four bolts on the throttle body which will give you access to the plugs. It will take 10-15 minutes
It took me I half an hour you do not have to take out the windshield wipers or the motors of the washer wipers just take out the five boats up top on the intake manifold and all the hoses and if you all come out in one piece
Nissan also made the whole windshield wiper valley removable also on the titan I wish ford did that to the f250 so you don't have to remove the whole damed cab off to do head work or turbo replacement on the diesel engines! Ave UA-cam channel calls dealerships stealerships these new vehicles are no more fuel efficient then the ones in the eighties they would be more fuel efficient if it weren't burning ethanol ethanol reduces fuel mileage not to mention it's corrosive to steel tanks and gums up carburetors and draws in water into the fuel tanks we need to neuter the epa for good.
useful detail BUT remove the big black air intake hose going from air box to throttle body??injector?? and then remove the 3 long bolts and a nut and this silver body can be moved away allowing access to the 3 spark plug bolts and leads, the rest, as they say, is history....
@@k_slater It should be changed every lets say 60k KILOMENTERS 37k miles. PLUS Filtran from Ihio produce the strainer filter, check the vid transmission oil change iQ. Nor did toyota remove cleaned the pan nor did they change the strainer , ask them why a Landcruiser or Avensis gets a strainer change and an iQ dosent... makes no sence
If you’re still around I used your video on changing plugs on a 2012 Scion IQ and got my car running great!

I live in England and i think your video is spot on well done i think you will help a lot of people save a lot of bucks
I don't even own a Scion and I found this video helpful. I would never have thought of removing the windshield wipers to get to the sparkplugs. 🚗🔧😨
pro tip: watch movies on Flixzone. Been using it for watching lots of of movies lately.
@Arian Genesis Yea, been watching on flixzone for since november myself =)
Thank you so much. Saved me tons of time and money. Solved my misfire issue too. Bought used iQ with 95k miles looks like the owner never touched the sparkplugs.
To be fair to the previous owner, the manual states to replace the spark plugs at 120k miles.
There one one more nut lower front 14MM to remove, at least on my IQ. Your post was very good saved me 5 hours of frustration at least!
Oops sorry if I missed one. I'm glad it helped you. When I was first trying to figure this out I figured I should film it to try and help someone else.
You don't need to remove the wipers or cowl if you have a swivel socket

Used this video to change my plugs today. Thank you.
Even as a toyota mechanic, i had to watch this video to learn how to replace the spark plugs... all this tells me is that i'm bad at my job!
Well done, I'm going to do the plugs on my 2009 IQ here in the UK. Your vid was great, thank you.
I have a good 30k more miles before I probably have to worry about this but you helped me a ton for when the time comes. Good video man don't sell yourself short thanks!
Thanks I have a 2012 Scion IQ
The video was good and I'm ready to do the job
Thanks for the video, this helped cut my time researching.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2014 IQ and your video was very well thought out. Great job.

DUDE...THIS ROCKS....THANK YOU
Need to do this soon, valuable information.
Thank you for this video!
doing this job this weekend. Thanks for the video
Thanks man very much appreciated!
Very useful, thanks!.
Scion IQ engines have a recall notice on them for carbon deposits. Use fuel injector cleaner and throttle body cleaner when you do your maintenance.
Yeah on just the intake engine yes?
Thank you, bout to do mine.

Very informative ❤
Nice video
Are there any torque specs for the plugs? I see nothing in the manual.
excellent, thanks for the helpful info.
+Manuel Ribarski I'm so glad it helped. I was frustrated at first when trying to even find the plugs. This car is definitely built in a way to get most people to go back to the dealer and spend a fortune on a cheap repair.
Thank you man!
What's the coil firing order
thanks for posting, very helpful!!!
Your welcome I'm glad I could help. Thanks for the comment.
You saved me alot of time and money.
Hey what gap did you use on the spark plugs I got the same ones you used I just don’t know if I need to gap them or not
Iridium plugs come pre-gapped. Do not mess with or drop them.
Good video.. but always best to go with ngk denso or bosh bosh is the cheapest in iridium or double platinum spark plugs
How did you remove the middle bolt cause i used an extension its so hard to get off
Thanks for the video 📹
hello can you tell where is the knock off sensor?
Great vid, thanks for your help.
thank you Im trying to change mine and I couldn't find them though i figured thats where they were
You saved me 600 bucks.
Super useful...thanks man 👍
Thanks for the video
Good work!!
+David Roy Thank you
Gracias hermano
Great job! Thank you!
The video showed me that I wouldn’t be able to do this myself 😟
did your check engine light come on too?
Stefanie Sutton Yes.
how many miles on the IQ when you changed the plugs?
I don't quite remember I think it was around 80000 or somewhere close.

MrLonelysun I would love to see a video on this.

very helpful thanks!
Thanks so much!...
That middle bolt was a pain in the ass
Star performance toyota iq different but the principle is there.
It took me I half an hour you do not have to take out the windshield wipers or the motors of the washer wipers just take out the five boats up top on the intake manifold and all the hoses and if you all come out in one piece
Please make video I'm trying to dot his
What a pain in but though.
Fuck yeah dude just had to swap them out on my wife's car and this video was perfect

thanks gaming geek
Like for real this video made it simple as shit to do this
Your car probably has a bad transmission that's what mine is doing when it first started having transmission problems CVT transmission suck
whats ur milage? I bet its around 75k miles and u never changed the tranmission oil.... as toyota claims its "life long" bs.. true?
@@AlexS-mf2kc I got mine changed at the dealership at 100k. They said it was dark. I would recommend a drain and fill. Runs smoother now.
@@k_slater It should be changed every lets say 60k KILOMENTERS 37k miles. PLUS Filtran from Ihio produce the strainer filter, check the vid transmission oil change iQ. In Canada the owner's manual says the CVT does not need to be changed. However the maintenance guide says it needs to be changed every 90,000km.
I have this exact same car, you change the spark plugs and the coils ?
Thanks
Awesome video. Thank you.
Thanks! Super helpful video.
+Josephlola Thanks I'm glad it helped. This was my first ever car repair video. :)
