Those steps come first but even then the trading card hobby needs to be regulated by the person bc it can become addicting

    Hi everyone, it’s Joey from the video. A few key takeaways from this:
    1. All of the Yugioh jokes are hilarious. Please keep them coming 😂
    2. My energy levels were kind of low during this as I was tired from the 13 hour drive to Austin. I feel like I didn’t do the best job presenting myself and my situation and I apologize about that. If Caleb is gracious enough to invite me back for a follow-up I will try to do a better job!
    3. My wife and I have decided to cashflow the rest of her school as it’s very cheap and we can cut some eating out and yugioh cards out of the budget to pay for it.
    4. I failed to mention in this video that I can’t transfer my GI Bill to my spouse or kids unless I reenlist in the military and do 4 more years of service which, respectfully, is ✨not happening✨
    5. I hope you all have a wonderful day and don’t make poor financial decisions like me 🙂

    • @sandrab1594
      @sandrab1594 Рік тому +3

      @tenhundredkills exactly! I used to follow dave ramsey, but I noticed that $1000 was not cutting it. Had so many repairs like you that was over $1k and had to pay them back in payments. Now I have a bit more cushion in my savings in case anything happens.

    • @tenhundredkills
      @tenhundredkills Рік тому

      @@sandrab1594 I think Dave Ramsey still suggests $1000 because of the psychological approach, not because it's a lot of money per se. When you have absolutely nothing and/or tons of debt, $1000 can give you a bit of confidence to tackle your financial issues.
      I'm mostly positive that Dave also advocates an emergency fund of 6 months of expenses. That's definitely a good idea no matter what.

    • @mya5582
      @mya5582 11 місяців тому

      I think the $1000, especially currently, isn’t supposed to be an “emergency fund”. A: they call it a starter, so it’s literally just supposed to kickstart your savings mindset.
      B: it IS something, because someone broke in debt doesn’t have $1000 saved. And you’re going to borrow for an **emergency** anyway when you don’t have any money, but now you have a $1000 buffer.
      C: it helps build the habit of not wasting your money, you save a little bit intentionally and then as soon as possible, all your free cash goes into paying off your debt.
      I make about 50K and I’m managing to pay off $21K in debt between January and November of this year.
      I did use my $1000 emergency fund to cashflow travel for a last minute job opportunity that’s helping me out big time.
      $1000 pays for a windshield, it pays for medications short term, it pays for a car part you can change yourself, it pays for an Uber when you need it, it pays for a round trip flight for a funeral, etc.
      If you’re running into $1000+ emergencies multiple times a year, I would bet you’re either not doing your best to manage risk in your life; you need to lay your sh*tbox car to rest and get a cheap one that runs; you need to search for better solutions to your problems; or you’re the mostly depressingly unlucky person you know. Or you own a house you should sell, a boat/car you should sell, you’re a parent, or genuinely medically screwed up (in which case life is already different for you and this generalized strategy doesn’t work because you’re exceptional)

    As someone in their 30's that helps run anime conventions, I am amazed at the poor financial habits exhibited at them. People will "save" up for them, but that really means just dumping an emergency fund on them.
    In the past I have tried to room with people who can't afford to split a cheap room 4 ways for the weekend, but they can dump $300 on merch with another $200 on food and just drive 2+ hours each way to attend the convention.
    There have been bidding wars during art auctions where someone will tell me "I just got paid and will dump my entire $1200 check on this item."
    I am considering hosting financial literacy panels at conventions because so many people in their 20s and 30s think 401k is some new isekai anime.

I spend bits of money after payday on cards for my collection but I also have savings, no CC debt, no car debt, no phone contract and a solid portfolio and pension built up. It’s called balance. For the WGU, to explain it better, basically you pay a flat rate for a semester, it’s like $3500 but if you finish any of the classes for the semester before the end of the semester, (you can test out of classes) then you can roll up a class you were supposed to take the next semester and you don’t have to pay any additional cost for that class. So you pay $3500 for the semester and you have to take atleast 4 classes but say you test out and finish two of those classes, then you can take an additional 2 classes for 0 additional cost. So if you push very hard you test out of a lot of classes early you can finish your degree quickly at a cheaper rate.

    As a veteran(navy), this persons lack of knowledge and preparation really hurts me. I know that Caleb only knows what he’s been told. I really wish Joey or someone he knows sees this comment and informs Joey. The GI bill CAN NOT be transferred to his wife. The only way his GI bill can be transferred to his wife/kids is if he transfers it while he’s in service AND serves an additional enlistment. Additionally, if I recall correctly, there are boot camps that Joey could do that wouldn’t use any of his GI bill, so he could always save his GI bill. Using the GI bill to go to online colleges in my opinion is a horrible idea. This makes your BAH(housing allowance) be fixed to the national “average”. When I went to school in SF(BAH is based on the zip code of the school), yes I know this is a really unique situation, I made $4,300/month in BAH. I only had to have 3 semester units in person a semester to maintain that housing allowance(1 class in person with 3-4 classes online). I lived in sacramento(2hrs away) where I only paid $1k in rent. His situation might be completely different, but he should definitely look into in person schooling as he could make significantly more money. Had I done online school, I would’ve made the same $1k/month in BAH. This extra income could be used to put into a Roth IRA or some sort of retirement(BAH isn’t seen as income but rather an allowance so it’s non -taxable income). Additionally, idk if anyone else caught this but he’s comparing post tax income($3100/month, including his contributions to TSP) to pretax income(60k/year). When I looked up Georgia tax laws, he does not get state taxes as a service member, but he will have income tax(1-5%) after he gets paid by his trucking company. He’s also not accounting for increased expenses when it comes to medical/dental. He could use the VA for medical, but dental(teeth are considered luxury bones) he’s on his own. Also, the VA services can vary from region to region and I know plenty of vets who just get medical insurance through their employer. Also, right now, he’s just an intern. He’s not expected to know much or work as many hours. In my field(public accounting), our interns are working 35-55hrs/week(55 for winter interns), whereas full time employees push anywhere from 40-80hrs a week(80 during busy season). I’m not very confident that he’ll able to maintain full time college AND full time employment. I’m not trying to trash talk Joey or anything, I just want him to be more prepared for his transition out of the military. I’m still having a difficult time adjusting and I got out in 2016.
    Also, a note to Caleb, when service members go into service we’re given a physical exam to show that we’re 100% able bodied. Asking someone if they’ve actually got their injuries from the military brings on a stigma that a lot of vets don’t want to fall into. I know a few vets who do not seek help for injuries due to this stigma that everyone has about not having an actual disability when they truly need it. Typically, it’s hard to catch these disabilities early on(and they get worse over time) and having something on record helps with the process. At the end of the day, it’s not your judgement call to say whether or not he deserves it. The VA will have him go to specialists to see if these are real problems and will give disability claims based on those facts. Additionally, having even a 10% disability claim can open so many doors to other resources. This can be anywhere from unlocking vocational rehab(additional job placement assistance) to some VA home loan assistance(waiving certain fees). Again, Joeys duty is to report any disabilities he felt like he has gotten since being in service and then the specialists will decide whether the claim is legitimate and service related or not.
    I feel like I need a financial audit of my finances but I’m lowkey to scared to dox myself and have everyone know how financially illiterate I might be, especially since I’m an accountant lol.

      @hoennnoodle Рік тому +8

      The military absolutely does not set people up for success. It’s honestly fucking appalling. During my two DIVO tours (got out before slating for shore), I encountered the whole gamut of financial problems with my guys, ranging from shitty car purchasing decisions by deck seamen coming straight outta bootcamp to senior POs going through divorces to Sailors literally not knowing what the Montgomery GI Bill they were paying into was. Financial resources from the ship’s CFSs to on-base “specialists” rarely provided much help - if any - and certainly could not teach financial literacy. TGPS only exists to recuse the Navy of any responsibility for failing to properly look out for Sailors. On my first ship, some of the first financial lessons a lot of junior Sailors got seems to have come from myself, another finance-background DIVO, and one of my BM1s holding basic finance lessons in the Deck Office after working hours… It was incredibly frustrating to see such an extreme level of institutional… neglect (on top of all of the other things the Navy had going for it).

      Most veterans have no idea how to properly strategize their education benefits, and it is not properly gone over during the transition process out of the military. Having said that, I agree with everything you are saying. Personally, I am leery of schools that over advertise or attempt to contact you many times to get you to apply, especially when students want to utilize VA education benefits. For those that are eligible for VA education benefits, speak with the Military Affairs/Veterans Services office prior to applying and get a feel for if you are being taken care of without the sales tactics. They should be indifferent to whether you go to their college/university or not. Just fyi, not every person at a college/university can answer veteran questions as VA regulations change often. Make sure the person is either employed by the VA or is employed as a School Certifying Official (SCO).

    Caleb. You should add up all the BS expenses and tell them how much it adds up to, then compare it to something that would make their debt more tacklable.
    That's what worked for me. What really opened my eyes is calculating all those small purchases and realize that they quickly add up to 250-300 dollars a month. If I save that over the entire year, that's already 3000 dollars. Imagine if I had 3000 right now. How much could that help me?

    Transitioning Air Force member here! This was a good watch and I have some knowledge to share as a part of my job was processing GI bills. To transfer a portion of it to his wife, he would have had to complete an additional service commitment of 4 years, which he said he definitely didn’t want to do so the only option is for him to use it. Additionally, my husband is a veteran working in the cyber security field. He’s currently attending WGU for additional certifications using his GI bill and it’s most definitely legitimate. The coursework meets the requirements for the bachelors degree as well as the certifications so students are awarded both through the track. He’s already received some of them in the mail after completing certain courses. About it being self-paced, whether he finishes a course in a weekend or in 6 months is up to him so it truly is 100% self-paced. @derrickfantano5701 they are regionally accredited though and ABET is more on the engineering side of things. Most listing in my area don't require it.

    I got my Bachelor's degree from WGU. The fact that you get certifications along with the degree is one of the reasons I picked it. Basically some of your courses are just certification prep and when you get the certification you've passed the course whether it took you a week or 6 months. Digital textbooks and pay for two attempts per cert is included in your tuition. I graduated years ago so some of that could have changed since then.

    As someone who was in the same boat of chasing trading cards not too long ago, I get it. The quick dopamine hit of having a shiny new card helped offset my depression... for a little while. On the bright side, once I was able to shake off chasing that fleeting high, I was able to sell most of my collection for a good amount and get out of most of my debts. Trying to sort out some kind of financial future at 42 isn't easy, but these vids help. Thanks!

      Yea back in 2018 I racked up over $10k in credit card debt buying mostly baseball cards. It’s gambling and back then the odds were way better than they are today in the hobby. I got lucky and had more value in cards that I pulled from boxes than money I spent on cards. Now a days I probably would have lost money. It can be addicting. It is a high when you pull that huge hit like a Mahomes auto rookie or an Othani auto rookie.

    I was waiting for one like this. Nerd hobbies are a real money sink I think a lot of people dont talk about. Alpha Investments is another good channel about the financial side of MTG. These and other things that garner nostalgia or "geek whimsy" seem to create a sort of dopamine rush I can relate too, and just as dangerous as other addictions out there.

      @@SirSpoonthere is nothing wrong with TCGs, gaming, Warhammer 40k, ttrpgs, etc as an adult... just have to treat it like a hobby as an adult (i.e. don't finance purchases to do it, save for very expensive stuff/ trips, etc.) and of course BUDGET for it. Always do things that bring you joy though.

    For future reference, WGU can be super legit if they are dedicated enough.
    3 friends
    1st - worked slower than normal class pace so it was not beneficial
    2nd - worked at same pace of class - not beneficial
    3rd - worked way faster and got a bachelors and most of the way to a masters through classes in 2 years.

    I got into tech with terrible spending habbits and I can confirm that Caled is exactly right about lifestyle inflation. If you dont develop the skills to budget and save when your income is low, you'll just keep spending more the more you make.

    Caleb, just so you know. For the guy to transfer benefits to his wife he would have to incur an additional service obligation. I believe you must have 4 years on your contract to transfer. In the army I deal with this issue often with soldiers. Especially people about to retire or get out.

    Caleb, I’m sure you think his school is a scam but WGU definitely not. It’s a legit, affordable, accredited school. I completed a bachelors and a masters degree (both in nursing) there in 2.5 years and increased my income by 15% working for one of the largest health insurance companies in the country due to my degrees. Plus I work from home!

    The WGU thing is legit. You pay for 6 months of classes. They are self guided so you can blow through assignments and take the finals quickly and then take more classes. If you are a hard worker you can fit twice the credits than you normally could fit in a regular semester.
