The Kemo M172N is functionally equivalent to the "unnamed" unit you mentioned. You wire it to the dynamo hub and to the light. It has a USB female connector. A switch sends power from Dynamo to eithe the light or the USB outlet. Costs EUR 35. From a German company. Maybe a bit big, but works ok.
I have experimented connecting to my Android phone, and the hub keeps up with the phone - when riding avg more than 22km/hr - unburdened light road bike, so not a bikepacking situation.

using SHIMANO ALFINE DH-UR705-3D Dynamo hub with a forumslader unit built from a kit for over 2 years now, mine gets a charge from anything over 5mph cross country... forumslader has the 3amp output.... all I can say best investment ive made on my bike.. I'm also using a 2 way switch to swap lights or forumslader..works a treat
This was an exceptionally well made video, thank you so much! I am considering my options for a 1000km MTB bikepacking race where I will pass through some villages but don't want to stay for too long and wait for the powerbank to charge. Then again, there will lots of climbing and probably lots of hike a bike, which isn't great with a dynamo. I guess I will stick with the powerbank for now, but the idea of being self-sufficient is great!

For what it's worth I use the sinewave & son dynamo system.. I plug a small battery pack into the sinewave then battery pack to light gps etc. That way u don't get the power drop when u stop... 🥳
This is a great set-up. I also have the sinewave beacon. I just wanted to note that some battery packs don't have Pass-through charging to both charge and be charged at the same time. It's worth checking when buying a new battery pack for this type of setup
Agreed, always try and charge your phone thru a separate battery as lots of phones need a regulated (set/fixed) charging voltage.
If you want the latest and probably best incarnation of dynamo, charging and lighting then look at the klite system and follow their advice.

I am looking at getting a new wheelset, and I am going to be getting a dynamo as battery charging on the long adventures is the only pain I find.
A good insight
I used a dynamo for the NC4000, used K-Lite rear blinking and front headlight. All fine. However, trying to charge a reserve battery was hard work on me putting the juice into the pedals. I gave up on this aspect 30minutes in knees were burning. Lights is great as you stop worrying about charging the battery at a cafe or stop forthe lights.
Have you ever considered using pedalcell ? It’s a rim drive Dynamo that can be disengaged. Also has two usb sockets and produces a much higher wattage.
It also doesn’t require a converter because the unit has a similar device included, they are around £300 from America. The plus side it can be used on different bikes/wheels although carbon rims aren’t recommended.
I do also love my SON Delux with sinewave box.
I have looked at it, but the only advantage really is the higher wattage, but as i have no problem charging everything anyway its not really a benefit for me.
The being able to disconnect doesn't really make any difference to me either considering you can't notice any resistance from the hub Dynamo. Bit less space efficient as well especially if you mount stuff on your forks.
The pedacell generator appears to have some big reliability issues, I was almost going to get one.
Have you looked at the Busch and Muller Luxos U Senso 70/90 Lux Front Dynamo Light? As well as a front light with battery for when you stop/go up hill it also provides a usb charging point which auto-cuts out when dyno drops in power so that the light keeps working. I’ve been using for a couple of years and works great to keep my light and charge my GPS or iPhone.
Nice one dude. I started using the B&M werk last year on your recommendation and still going strong, many thanks. When I did the JOGLE earlier this year it was great for charging my phone,gps,camera, lights etc ;-) Not much use on the South Downs Way though haha!! Battery pack as a backup definitely!! Congrats on over 7k subs now mate, that's gone crazy eh?
Big problem with not being able to turn off lights as well is if you travel by train, they don’t like you take a bike with lights still on on to the platform, I had that problem with my old Dynamo lights and used to have to cover them up before going on platform 😂
Excellent. Very informative. For cost and convenience I am reluctant to rebuild a wheel or buy a complete unit. I am considering 2 (3?) power banks. If I limit myself free camping no more than 2 nights. Thanks again.
Really useful video - thanks... made me realise a dyno is not for me as our miles are low and speed often doesn't get above 5 mph.. for hours!! hell sometimes even 2 mph!!! much appreciated and keep up the good work - atb

have contemplated going the way of dynamos but always just thought a couple of battery packs would be enough? Though your trips probably go longer than mine without access to power.
It can be enough depends on your needs, i can essentially never need to find an outlet though
what about if connected to power bank and plug charger cable from power bank to devices?

Hi, I was hopping too use a Hunt wheel dynamo , and use this too top up a battery bank then have three four outputs. Fill blank before hand mains so dynamo is just trickle charging bank, the devices could be operated on as required . Your thoughts please
Its pretty slow to charge a power bank and if you are charging 3/4 devices at a time you will probably not be able to put enough charge back into the bank throughout the day.
Really depends on what you are charging and how often though.

I wanted a dinamo that could be turned off or deactivated with a button. does it exist in somewhere or this is just something i imagined? a fantasy of mine i mean... excuse my bad english please :-)

Great video mate, you made some great points. Whats a rough cost of having a wheel built around a dynamo hub?
Depending on the hub you choose you can spend anywhere from £50- £200 on the hub. Then price in whatever rim you want, if you took a rim and a hub to a bike shop they would probably charge you around £20-£50 to build the wheel plus £35 ish for spokes and nipples (around)£1-£2 a spoke.
You can buy a couple ready built wheels nowadays though, halo do a few there cheapest is about £160 and hunt do one as well but much more pricey as they use SON hubs.

I guess you would need a power meter to do that test, which unfortunately i dont have
Just an annoraky FYI. A Dynamo hub generally requires 3 Watts to overcome the magnetic resistance within it.
So they require you to put out an additional 3 watts for a given speed.👍
Have you used the Cinq 5 Plug III usb charger instead of your sinewave charger?
Nope just the three in this video, i did look at them years ago but the price is a bit to much for me. And also not as practical to switch between bikes.

I am sorry, but every over priced USB adapter needs a big capacitor...
Those are my thoughts as well... I'm thinking about just designing my own circuit for doing this.
