- This is the first of three new episodes in this series, with episodes released monthly.
22 year old Charlotte and her boyfriend Lance are sleeping rough in Brighton again after the winter night shelter closed in the spring.
Kelly, now approaching her 19th birthday, has moved back to Hastings after her boyfriend was arrested in Brighton, and Ocean, who is 20, has returned from France after her work placement didn’t work out.
In the last 10 years, the number of people sleeping rough in Brighton & Hove has increased by nearly twenty times - more than anywhere else in the UK. We continue to follow Kelly and Ocean as they negotiate life on the streets whilst Charlotte faces her biggest challenge so far.

I became homeless here in London, On. My husband died in between a move. New house I couldn't afford, old home taken. I did not know a single person as we stayed to ourselves and have been in the city for 1 year. I spent 3 months in shelter, grieving and confused, scared. I got a government housing apt. So don't judge, I don't drink or do drugs, just have mental health issues. Until U R in this kind of situation, U can't judge us!

You are very right! I never been in this situation but i refuse to judge them at all! To survive there every day is a though full time job !
My family and I were homeless, and I can tell you for a fact that for most homeless people, it all came down to repeatedly making shitty life choices. I’ll judge all I want.

@@schatzeeone6230 Yes and no. If every homeless person in the UK was given a roof over their head, you will always still find people sleeping rough mainly due to mental health issues. But you have to be pretty heartless not to sympathise with these kids who have grown up in the care system. They really have the odds stacked against them from the start, and not having a safe and secure upbringing as a child would give most people mental health issues. They haven't really had parents as such. 😣
Everyone talks a lot about Kelly because let's be honest, she's really cute - but I really like Charlotte - such a kind soul...her and the boyfriend are just about rich to have one another.

I don't think everybody talks about Kelly because she's really cute. It's more her outlook for me. She isn't mad, if there is resentment there you cant see it and she's trying to make sure she is actively trying to get out of her situation and keeps pushing forward, both things are really hard in this position.

Once due to money problems and the 2nd due to my marriage breaking up, now after 23 years with my wife , I am close to being on the streets due to her taking everything I worked for.
Living in Spain now , life is very hard over here due to the lack of jobs and money only being focused in some areas.
At the beginning of the covid out break, I lost my home, job, wife, kids and didn't have any support over here, I managed to get a flat and living day by day.
I am now 50

Hiya, I'm the girl in the video. I did manage to get myself sorted out in the end :) am even starting college soon! Things are looking up.. But unfortunately there is a lot of people out there at the moment who aren't as lucky as I have been.
I'm not on drugs. I'm not an alcoholic. The mentality that the homeless are in these situations because they are alcohol/drug dependent is what leaves many vulnerable people at risk of not being helped. I don't have to explain my story to you any further, the reporter decided to cut out the part where I explained what had happened and why. We did Alot of filming initially.

Been thinking about Kelly since the last episode. She seems to have a heart of gold and genuinely wants a better life for herself. Really hope she is soon in a better place

Homelessness is awful as it is, imagine having periods on top of it! I feel so bad for them 😢
Very Snazzy And no free sanitary products either. Women on the streets have to find the money for them monthly. Reusable menstrual products would be the way forward but they’d have no way of sterilising / washing them each month. Really sad. x

They can get free toiletries and hygiene products all over Brighton, also contraception. I live in Brighton - there is help available.

My GP surgery runs a programme whereby women can effectively donate sanitary and other personal care goods to homeless women. I think it's a great idea
Ocean seems the most vulnerable. It’s like she’s just coping.
To all the hateful comments, I might be months away from being homeless, you never know when your life and circumstances can change.
Be thankful for what you have and if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

I was homeless for a while (I was lucky enough to always find places to stay, and I didn't have to sleep on the street) and once I got my own place, things actually became so much more challenging, in a different way! There needs to be more support for homeless people as they transition to a stable home and find their feet, cause it is so overwhelming trying to manage everything and keep a house when you're used to having no responsibilities and 50p in your pocket.
i always thought we have so many old people living in houses that are way to big for them while being lonely now I know not everyone is nice but can you imagine partnering someone like kelly up with an old lady they could both help each other old women has lived her years and become wise and can teach them a thing or 2 , young one has energy to do round the house jobs etc now i know this wouldn't work for everyone but it makes sense Xx

So sad, cos on the last episode seemed so hopeful putting out her C.V etc, and back in Hastings which is a shit hole - hope for Kelly she's 18 and got her whole life ahead of her. That girl is wise to the world. I really hope things work out for her.

don't think just a job and a flat will help her much. her problems are much more deep rooted than that. a young homeless person could get a place to live and a job quite easily with a bit of patience and effort if there inner demons would let them. it's sad really, but the only person that can help them is themselves.

Charlotte and Lance are so so cute together and I admire them so much for maintaining what seems like such a good, healthy and loving relationship in such a stressful situation. Especially now that Charlotte is pregnant, which seemed like an accident to me that could have happened to anyone because after years of being together they obviously thought they couldn't have a child. I don't think that's dumb, rather a logical conclusion. A lot of couples with money and jobs and a home don't manage to treat eachother so well, so that really amazed me. I hope they are safe and healthy and in a better place.
They are co dependent on each other, as soon as their situation changes they will have other options.

Since the Doc, we see her apply and got her Passport, a place and on to school...so far she's doing the most..why people judging her IDK..most of the people in the comment probable don't even have a passport or the first step to get one.

It's shameful, that in this day and age, in one of the biggest economies in the word, that we still have people living on our streets. Shame on us.
I couldn't agree more Callum. Britain is one of the richest countries in the world. How the hell do we have a system that allows people to live like this? It's not a living it's just existing. Yes, it's utterly shameful in 2018.

Statistics vary of course, but the UK is usually placed in the top 10 richest nations/economies, with more conservative estimates putting it in the top 30. You're right, we are easily able to sort out the homeless issue - if the will is there to do it. Sadly this has never been high on the political agenda. It baffles me - I think it's one of the most urgent issues of all, homelessness has so many negative knock-on effects for society and the repercussions spread far.
And how is that? If people at a young age start doing drugs.. how are you going to prevent it with economic wealth?
Shame on the culture! The majority of the homeless are there based on their own poor decisions. Most have multiple opportunities to straighten their life out but throw it away! Do you feel sorry for someone who intentionally puts themselves into debt?
I'm glad this series is back, I found myself rooting so much for these ladies, hoping they manage to get their life back on track 🤞🏻❤️
Me too, I would have thought our sympathy for these women who find themselves homeless was the overwhelming reaction. It's sad and shocking to see some of the vile comments directed at them here. There are some poisonous people in the world!
I think Kelly is such a kind and gentle soul. You can see how hard she`s working to better herself. Quite intelligent and could go a long way in life if she is given the chance to do so. Admire her so much.

I was homeless as a teen in Leeds an the worst part other than the cold an fear, was the been looked through like I wasn’t there, I remember one Xmas eve sitting outside McDonald’s watching people walking about going home with last minute shopping an breaking down I was 15 an just the year before I was part of a Xmas, walking past homes with decorations the lights on knowing I would be waking up behind a shop an all those I’d seen would be waking up to the magic of Xmas it was heartbreaking

The most touching thing in the video was the way the dog cuddled up in the couples arms and didn’t judge them . He was happy with the cuddles and the love. It’s a shame where drugs lead people.

Thank you for this episode, i know for experience that is very hard to be an homeless and turn around that situation, i hope that everyone can be in a better position in the future, its important to have someone who can give us hope and trust on us and most important help us in basic things, like i said keep making this episodes,
and help them in what you can and not in only making the videos, that is a drop in the ocean, its shitty to homelessness exists, it shouldnt.

Because of the storytelling angle, we are drawn to sympathize with them. And I do sympathize with them. I actually graduated from a uni in Brighton and, coming from a developing country, I was really shocked to find the level of homeless case in Brighton (and UK in general). I am rooting for these people to have better life because nobody deserves to sleep on the street. What makes me wonder is why some of them seem unable to hold a job or a shelter for a long time.. perhaps off screen they have deeper mental health issues? perhaps the system is being unfair to them? I wouldn’t know because our perception and judgement is limited by the narrative and episode duration BBC chooses to present the story.
you may not like truth but if they ws illegals who Broke in country they wud be in hotel's an have cash an benefits, we can't put British black white an Asians first as it racist lol, could slowly be changing law so illegals go back from where they came but even so this will carry on, realistic solution is give them housing with strict rules an support who checks they are doing what they shud be as they get so use 2 this lifestyle they can't cope with normal living, obviously a few chances but they need that key worker checking up

In America in certain areas they build tiny homes for the homeless. By having these homes grouped together it means they have a community and safety in numbers. I wish we had the same here cos I really feel for them facing the cold and hunger.
Those are very, very few unfortunately. It's pretty much everyone living in tents in San Francisco, LA, Portland, Seattle, Denver. Our leaders REALLY need to do something about it. They also need to stop letting all this Fentanyl in too.
Its crazy, if I was on the streets, freezing cold, and was offered a warm and safe place to sleep, I garuntee you, I would not leave
I really hope the best for all these people they all deserve so much more and I'm glad they can see that though and seem to all be heading in the right direction
