The fact that Simon was able to resist the crown's maddening influence for so long was quite frankly impressive. It showed just how gentle of a person he was, and how happy he was with his life prior to finding it, that it took so long for his mind to break
I always had a head cannon that the reason Ice King’s favorite princess was Princesse Bubblegum was because she was smart and looked vaguely like Betty.
He's already said that he made the most emotional scenes in his entire career for Simon, and coming from him, a legend in voice acting, says a lot about how complex and deep is Simon's character
@@premiumheadpats4150 they hang out in Fionna and Cake. There's a scene where Simon calls Marceline on the phone, but it's evident that Simon didn't let her know that he was suffering.
It’s amazing how much of an important and well liked character with a lot of depth he became. He started off as an old crank who kidnapped princesses. Now he’s this tragic guy with a twisted past
And the fact even when he had some remembrance of his past and his true self came to the surface only to be gone by his insanity he still trys to do the right thing
@lunacinnamon201 I think it's more like dissociate personality disorder since the crown was basically granting the first person the wish and it was Gunther who wished to be like his mentor so it basically overwrites the person's psyche until it get hit with a hard rest
I both love and hate how the comedic relief of the show became the most tragic character that you genuinely went from laughing at to someone you just wanna hug and keep in your pocket 😭💕
His tragic backstory actually might have come from a joke! The writers really wanted Ice King to sing "Daddy why did you eat my fries" but wondered how he would even know that song to begin with so they developed the Simon and Marcy episode. I might be wrong but I refuse to verify this information because I think its very funny
That song is the theme song for a real-life TV show called Cheers, which would have aired shortly before the mushroom war in the Adventure Time world. Where Simon lives now is a recreation of what life was like just before the Mushroom War, so it would have Cheers too. It is a nice callback, but it's not super deep.
what's funny is that here in the brazilian dub, during simon's first appearance in the series, he was dubbed by the same person who gave voice to andrew garfield in every spider-man movie so yeah, that's an extra point to your comparison!
The ice king’s story is one of the saddest stories told in animation history, the portrayal of Simon leaving Marciline for her own good due to his underlying mental issues could bring tears down anyone’s face.
its a representation of alzheimers in real life, people with alzheimers are afraid of hurting their families in order to far distance themselves no matter how love it goes but it wont work sad but true
The mental health issues were definitely a huge part of it but I also think it was because he was making the world around him so cold that it was affecting her health. Simon's suicidal quest to get marceline soup for her cold in that one episode was likely a result of his guilt for his ice powers getting her sick in the first place. They make a point to show that Simon can no longer even wipe her tears without hurting her. This marks the third time that Marceline has been abandoned by a parental figure, which really puts the tragedy meter over the top. Her father was too maladjusted and immature to care for a human child and her mother became too physically ill and abandoned her to go die alone. Young Marceline was left with only guesses as to what she had done to be abandoned. It's important to note that Simon leaves IMMEDIATELY after recounting and grieving for Betty's prior abandonment of him after his first time wearing the crown. The thought of leaving Marceline is all mixed up with his trauma of losing Betty but he's too far gone to recognize it. So this scene accounts for deep seated traumas of abandonment being re-lived and reinforced for both characters AT THE SAME TIME.
one of the most beautiful things from simon is with golb. something about the way he comforts finn hits so deep. its one of the times in the series where you truly see how deeply kind simon is not just to Marceline or betty and what he says holds so much weight coming from him.
It’s all a tragic loop for him all over again, needing to save someone by turning into ice king as a sacrifice edit: bruh u guys seriously nitpick every detail to the point where thats what was focused instead of the actual message I was trying to give I swear alright I replaced "child" with "someone" are u guys happy now
Is Fionna really a child in this iteration? In her world, she had multiple jobs, lived on her own, and paid bills. There was also a scene of her drinking wine with Marshal Lee and Ellis. She seems to be at least 21 years old in this series.
@@Jok3st3rShe's definitely not a child, but I can imagine how Simon could see her as a child. Simon's over a thousand years old. And even if you don't count the years he was Ice King, he's got to be at least 50
Poor Simon. It’s crazy to say this, but I’ve known this character for like 12 years now, ever since I was a kid I wanted him to be happy... I know he’s not real, but damn he’s incredibly relatable. Maybe Fionna and Cake can help him, I can only hope. :(
He is real, and he's all around you. The broken addict at the bus stop, the nurse at the hospital who breaks down crying because her job is making her go insane. There are plenty of ice king's around the world who think their story has ended because their troubles are making them feel like they aren't themselves anymore.
Same, i've loved his character since i watched "i remember you" as a kid and i was so happy to have him back in "Come Along With Me" as much as i loved Ice KIng, now is HIS turn to have closure, i truly want to see him happy :,(
i mean, he at least seemed to have a somewhat happy ending. he's starting to move on from betty and from what we see in the finale, he seems to be living a bit more of a happy life. of course he is probably still struggling, but it's clear he has more of a will to live now, and is finally happy.
Simon's story is truly tragic. Ive always wondered at the beginning of adventure time if anyone but Marcileene knew if Ice King was a human named Simon. I think the character of Simon needs his own spinoff to show the entire story of him.
Really? Did you ever think watching that first episode of adventure time with Ice King that he would evolve to have a tragic back story, become a father figure to a demon human vampire girl, rip time and space to bring his one true love through a portal made from a stuffed animal, be cured of his insanity by being digested by a god of chaos only for his true love to save save him by merging with said chaos god, learn he had an entire alternate illegal universe locked away in his head, and finally agree to return to the state of madness he endured for centuries to not only snuff out his grief but protect said illegal universe in his head from yet another god. Can you honestly look back at the child you once were laughing at that silly ice wizard and think any of those were gonna happen to him, and still have the gull to say he's boring? @@Master-Works
@@Master-WorksWhich. is kinda the entire point that's being explored on Fionna and Cake. A fixed Simon who's losing his grip on life because he realizes he doesn't belong on this magical world. He's not boring tho. That's your opinion.
And yet, Simon held to his sanity, at least enough that even in his insane "Ice King" persona, he was a "pseudo functional senile manchild with some displays of psychotic behaviour, in his quest to be loved". He could have easily become something worse....like what Farmworld Finn became... Or cast away what little moral he had to become what his "WInter King" self became
And I didn't even show the worst stuff he did! He once dropped Princess Bubblegum in a pit of radioactive goo, he accidentally summoned a demon that kidnapped Jake, and he even cut in line at the doctors office! And that last one was actually intentional!
It infuriates me how everyone treats him in Fiona and cake just because he "looked" happy when his own sanity was lost to the crown. Of course he's a sad old man after everything that happened to him.
Every character was so deeply explained and improved over the entire show's run. The character development of Simon is such a sad tale that ties in with Marceline and the last of the human race after the mushroom war. Tragedy is just a small price to pay for a much richer character in the end
He is arguably one of the toughest characters! He saw the end of the world, basically became Rick Grimes on multiple occasions to protect a kid that isn't even his, while dealing with the loss of everybody he ever knew. Dude saw the apocalypse and his own personal hell and said "Fuck you! I'm gonna keep trying to get better anyway."
Simon's one deepest wish was to be married to his princess. Since Betty was already his fiancée that means Simon was THIS close to actually fulfilling it on his own. The crown's big wish was already granted to Gunther and it forced Simon to try and speed things up but the sudden burst of insanity made him incoherent. After Betty's disappearance he was able to focus on surviving and later raising Marcy. After being forced to abandon her, his one deepest wish fully takes over his mind. Ice King begins kidnapping princesses to marry, trying to replace the one that got away. The reason he obsessed over Bubblegum was because she had so many similarities to Betty. The tragedy comes from him already having what he wanted but the crown unintentionally messes it up trying to give it to him anyways in it's own twisted way.
Ice king used to be my least favorite character when I was little, but after his backstory and his new writings (which the writers and creators did a wonderful job) Simon has got to be one of my favorite characters.
@kawaiibebsy2768 Even with that, he was my favorite character. His jerkness made laugh so many times. And his Simon Backstory was the first time I saw a so good tragic arc.
I used to think Ice King was annoying, but now that his true self is revealed, it actually breaks my heart. All Simon wanted was to be reunited with Betty, and let go of being the Ice King. Now that he's back to his old self, the only thing people do is mock his pain and scold him for being a 'loser'. It also makes me lose a lot of respect for some of the Adventure Time characters. I was hoping people would help Simon move on with his life, not put him down any further. Edit: Wow. I never expected my comment to get so many likes. Thank you. 😊
Its pretty sad to see characters casually mentioning Ice King in Fiona and Cake when it clearly causes Simon a lot of discomfort and pain, multiple people calling his insane kidnapping persona better than the sad man he became.
@@Teknanamhopefully not. Finn genuinely feels concerned for Simon's wellbeing. His heart is in the right place to help people, its just that he hasnt realized or learned yet that his methods doesn't fix everyone
@@slimslimee4411I agree. Finn is too extroverted. He is a hard core adventurer. Not a delicate scientist. The person who could help Simon move on is someone like PB, science guys, Librarians etc. Finn and Simon are on 2 different wavelengths.
And also Finn changed when Jake is no longer around. Both he and Simon have lost someone close. Finn was able to meet Jake again. Simon on the other hand...
You have to love how Finn’s attitude and the way he handles the Ice King changes after he find out about Simon. He’s not some evil wizard, he’s just a sick man and genuinely can’t control himself. There’s no true malice in the Ice King’s actions. And Finn tends to take a more careful attitude when the Ice King acts up. @@beanogames7182 One thing that's hard to deal with is how the media never talks about the pedo**** from epstein's islands and how they are still abusing kids
I always wonder how early they had this planned out because it's an incredibly clean retcon to turn a comic relief villain into one of the most emotionally damaging characters in Adventure Time.
They didn't plan any of it. Ooo being a post nuclear war version of Earth wasn't a thing until the writers thought about where the Business Men could've come from, they were just supposed to be silly nonsense characters, but then they put on their theorist hats and theorized about their own show. Ice King being someone from before the war wasn't a thing until the episode with that tape. Simon having a connection with Marceline wasn't a thing until they questioned how on earth Ice King could know her "fries" song, since he randomly sung a parody of it in one episode. This leads to the first Marcy and Simon flashback later on. They were literally making shit up as they went along at EVERY individual step.
@@Cri_Jackal Ah, my favorite kind of storytelling Improv has to be my favorite cuz making shit up and having it be compelling is such a massive gamble but when it works, its absolutely fantastic. I hope when simon gets the crown he learns to control his sanity (not like the winter king, that method is fucked up) he deserves it after all the pain he had to endure
Maybe? Or maybe not. In the last episode for adventure time we saw a short segment where gunther ice king grew really large and was missing i think 2 other gems. And gunther ice king was fighting one of jake's descendant with one of the gems on his eye. So probably something went wrong with them.
Regarding one thing about the powers is that, I don't think he should. Not only exactly are they a great source of pain for him, as it is what led to him losing everything including himself for a thousand years, but magic in Adventure Time is very directly tied to madness and sadness.
@@ashyunderscorealt95Also consider Oberlorg turned Gunther became the Ice Thing because that primordial diety of destruction wished to be Ice Thing because after being on our planet for millions of years as a penguin, he found love with the Ice King. It was like the love of a mental person for their beloved pet, but it was enough to make Oberlorg desire that more than being a destructive force, and Finn and Jake put his true form down after a huge battle. So that will definitely come into play.
They never show the moment but Simon canonically summoned and forced Hunson Abadeer to find and take care of Marceline, all while likely very much insane from the crown. He overpowered the king of the nightosphere.
7:48 perfectly shows just how the character iceking is. Simon is still in there, deep deep inside its simon, just so warped its hard to tell its even him anymore.

I personally hope Finn and especially Marceline become aware of his intentions to wear the crown again. Because I personally don’t think his friends are gonna let him or want him to become Ice King again, which in turn will put them in direct conflict with Fiona and Cake. Since they aren’t fully aware of the consequences of him putting the crown back on, Finn is probably gonna fight her in the Finale.
I mean, Finn is somewhat aware, remember he was talking to Simon in the bar, Simon says “I sometimes dress up as Ice King and relive some memories, life was easier that way”. Fin was very accepting of both Simon and Ice King, but the crown was basically neutralized so Finn just tried to help clear his mind with an Adventure. He did ask Simon to concider talking to Marcy about it
@@lucidifying I mean…they still need the crown. Otherwise Bug boy will just kill Simon and her world will cease to exist. Sure she’s being a bit selfish trying to magicalize her world at the cost of Simons sanity (though there is a chance they can find a crown that doesn’t grant insanity due to Gunter not making the first wish), it still doesn’t change the fact that everyone she knows and loves is at risk of being deleted if Simon isn’t immortal.
@@lucidifying I'm confident fionna n cake will see the actual effect of the crown in future episodes, it will create an interesting conflict within them
My lord, that gentle shoulder touch to Finn and the "Hey. Nobody gets to choose how it happens" so calmly. Like he just regained his sense of self and he's already using it to console Finn before they think they're all going to die.
The part where Simon and Marcy are travelling through the ruins of the world is the roughest for me. It was so selfless of him to protect her with his magic, even though he knew it would slowly transform him into the Ice King the more he did. He didn't see that Marcy was becoming less afraid of the monsters, and more afraid of losing her one true friend...
I consider myself a tough guy when it comes to being emotional watching a movie, tv show or even reading a book, very few times i actually got emotional watching something and i can say for sure the episode Simon and Marcy is one of those, i really had to skip those parts while watching this video because i started to get a bit teary. i think the biggest tragedy is that through the course of fionna and cake, we learned that our simon and betty are their best selves in all the multiverse. their relationship was doomed on a cosmic scale.
i really hope in the new series we get a nice ending for him where he can let his pain go and really live without hanging onto his sorrow and regret. among other things. us hearing him say "ima become the ice king again" is really making me sad cause it's just him saying "i give up" when he has a whole new opportunity to live and make the most of what's left of his life
That's why I wanted to make this video! I felt like the impact of him deciding to become Ice King again could be completely missed by people who didn't know the full backstory so i tried to tie it all together. its heartbreaking to hear him decide to return to his insanity after everything he's gone through.
God the way this show masterfully gave its textbook goofy cartoon villain a super tragic backstory and tied his character arc into the baseline of the show is marvelous.
Turning the crown from a curious quirk of Ice king to defeat him to one, if not the most, dark narrative point of the entire adventure time series is the reason why love this show and it stands as one of my favorite I've ever seen.
This is so sad. I really hope there's a way for Simon to save Fionna and Cake's world without having to turn into Ice King. We all just want you to be happy, Simon.
Of all the things that happened to me, i think him crying when he sees Golbetty for the first time actually makes me so sad. You can feel the sadness in his voice and it just hurts so bad
Wow this almost gave me tears. He was forced to use the crown to protect marceline, and then he had to abandon her because he was scared to hurt her. Betty did everything she could to bring Simon back instead of learning to love him like as ice king, sacrificing herself in the process. But Simon’s only wish was to see Betty again. Then he had nothing to live for and was left with massive trauma. If I understand correctly he had an identity crisis (he was wearing his ice king robe) and he doesn’t k ow what makes him happy anymore. Then he has to relive his trauma in order to protect a kid again because from what I know Fiona and Cake are his creations.
I've always wondered if simon was partially the cause of the mushroom war. His testing of the crown was clearly affecting the weather. Maybe the desperation caused by what they thought was a new ice age drove them to the mushroom war.
It really is wild when the series started everyone was like "haha funny silly king lmao" and now its like "haha...traumatic past of an amazing character that i will grow to care about as time goes on and learn more about" like bruh😭
One of the most tragic characters ever written. Fully aware of his insanity yet unable to escape it. A cursed addiction born from a mere goof. Looking for the love of his life, his princess, only for her to sacrifice herself after finally reuniting, so that he may return to himself, and life on. Man... what a guy.
i remember as a kid when they first showed who ice king was i didn’t really know how to care about it but years later when i got older i watched adventure again & i realized how sad it was for simon to literally lose himself
It’s genuinely amazing how they made this super creative story about a lost love, something that we couldn’t see when we were young but can look back at the seasons of creativity they gave us. I truly appreciate Cartoon Network for giving good stories while making them fun to watch in our younger years.
Simon being easily one of the most loved characters in the show is something many fans would’ve never saw when it was the first 2 seasons of the show. I still shed a tear when I see the Simon and Marcy episodes, it’s so tragic, this man just wanted a normal life with the love of his life and still may never be able to get it.
Honestly, Tom Kenny deserves an award for voicing Simon in Fionna and Cake. I’m pretty sure he won an award for voicing Ice King but the way he’s able to portray Simon’s depression, pain and his emotional moments within the show is just amazing.
In hindsight. Bettie could’ve gone out of Golb, since the Ice King didn’t revert back to his Prime form. Hence Simon remained the same. The crown would’ve remained the same.
The problem wasn't getting out of GOLB, it was stopping him. The only way to stop GOLB from destroying Ooo (and by extension, Simon) is to merge with it.
@@lamentslounge Jake was certain that Gunter would restore themselves to Orgalorg. Pretty sure most would be certain. But then he just merges with the crown and becomes an Ice King-like being, which Jake notes. Its not the same process of crown corruption that Simon and other crown wearers got because no one else merges with the crown.
I really love how Simon called Marceline's dad, confirming Simon knew what Macy was, and didn't even care. Really sweet considering Distant Lands when she reveals she thought of herself as a monster when she was little.
I'm very glad that they are continuing the trajectory of Simon's story in Fionna and Cake, we can see how depressed he is about not having gotten over Betty's "death" yet, and apparently he will meet her again, at least what we saw in the trailer (or that could be a flashback), so I hope he ends up having a happy ending.
I really do hope that this series ends well for Simon. I would love for the world to continue but more than anything having Simon finally come to peace whether it's getting Betty back or finding a new reason to live will be one of the most satisfying things after 13 years of seeing this man go from crazy to finding a new purpose in life.
i think one of the most important aspects of simon is that he is a genuinely good person, and i hope fionna and cake doesnt leave that out during the series
SAD FACT: in adventure time lore, destiny exists, as proven by Finn always losing his arm in his past life, his present life, and his daydreams of himself. This means that Simon and Betty may never be together permanently. they may always be an infinite attraction of two beings that will never be- due to destiny. (this is probably why simon found betty again even though he wasn't trying to)
Ice King was really what made me fall in love with adventure time. He went from the comic relief villain, kidnapping princesses and messing with ooo, to a heartbreaking schizophrenic who just wants his princess back
It’s terrible about his life. From a regular man looking for something to research, to an insane ice wizard, to a depressed man. His whole life was destroyed.
I love how Finn just threw himself into Golb’s mouth without a second thought to try to save Ice King even tho Ice King has been his enemy for so long. It shows the compassion he’s grown towards him and how he actually cares whether he lives or dies now.
I used to hate the ice king when i was younger. But now after I’ve re-watched the entire series including episodes of Fiona and Cake, he has become my favorite character ever since. I feel so bad, Betty and Simon deserve their happy ending
Curiously, fionna calls him 'dum-dum' in 12:35. Betty called him the same when she time-travels forward to the future. I suppose she was used to call him that. I wonder if that's the reason he acquiesced
Kinda sad that his deepest wish was to become Evergreen and as soon as he did that he scolded himself for failing to stop the comet... Then he explodes
I was actually going to end the video with that clip but I felt like it cut the drama I had spent the entire video building... I was really close to keeping it tho
The episode at the start was incredible. Went from chill to intriguing to mind-blowing - sad Seeing Finn slowly, finally accepting more and more ice king until they are basically friends It's a nice character development (finn jumped inside golb's mouth after him and they were about to disappear together)
Considering how quickly Finn fell to the corruption of the crown, the fact Simon resisted so long means he has an incredible willpower.

what's funny is that here in the brazilian dub, during simon's first appearance in the series, he was dubbed by the same person who gave voice to andrew garfield in every spider-man movie so yeah, that's an extra point to your comparison!
The ice king’s story is one of the saddest stories told in animation history, the portrayal of Simon leaving Marciline for her own good due to his underlying mental issues could bring tears down anyone’s face.
its a representation of alzheimers in real life, people with alzheimers are afraid of hurting their families in order to far distance themselves
no matter how love it goes but it wont work
sad but true

Every character was so deeply explained and improved over the entire show's run. The character development of Simon is such a sad tale that ties in with Marceline and the last of the human race after the mushroom war. Tragedy is just a small price to pay for a much richer character in the end

After Betty's disappearance he was able to focus on surviving and later raising Marcy. After being forced to abandon her, his one deepest wish fully takes over his mind. The part where Simon and Marcy are travelling through the ruins of the world is the roughest for me. Seeing these in chronological order makes it even more tragic.

I almost cried watching that part on this video again

I actually almost cried after watching this, almost every sad Simon scene was just too much for this video
Ice King was really what made me fall in love with adventure time. He went from the comic relief villain, kidnapping princesses and messing with ooo, to a heartbreaking schizophrenic who just wants his princess back
The worst thing was the fate of Gunther. His deepest, truest wish was to become like his master despite his cruelty, and it drove him mad.
i genuinely feel bad for this dude
Still one of my top favorite and most impressively written characters to date in my opinion, so well conveyed.
2 weeks later and after watching everything, man does it all come together nicely
Gunther was so emotionally abused that he went mad with grief at failing the man who he couldn’t accept didn’t care
Kinda sad that his deepest wish was to become Evergreen and as soon as he did that he scolded himself for failing to stop the comet... Then he explodes
@@beanogames7182 that must have been what corrupted the crown
this truly is tragic
he used to wear glasses
Now everybody know it!
I was actually going to end the video with that clip but I felt like it cut the drama I had spent the entire video building... I was really close to keeping it tho
4:49 bro I never realized that later on when they go inside the crown, it manifests as an actual labyrinth. Crazy callback
7:47 Can’t believe we got the scene in the recent Fionna and Cake, where we see this image being taken, pose and all.
The episode at the start was incredible. Went from chill to intriguing to mind-blowing - sad
Seeing Finn slowly, finally accepting more and more ice king until they are basically friends It's a nice character development (finn jumped inside golb's mouth after him and they were about to disappear together)
