Seth, last night I ran up a 7-mile road in Flagstaff that started at 7300 feet and ended at 9500 feet going up to the mountain trailhead. Everything was burning, but I kept thinking about the red blood cells and not to fight the mountain, but float the mountain. Climbing for 7 miles straight during a run made me respect mountain running even more than I already did. This was on the pavement so I can't imagine how it would feel running up a 14er. I don't know how you do it day after day, I will need many recovery days after this one! Much respect to you and all the mountain runners out there👊 ♥
Couldn't have picked a better day to wear the Irish vest Seth! Incredible performances by Irish athletes in the U20 European Athletics Championships, 4 golds and topping the medal table so far🥇🇮🇪
I started watching your channel for the shoe reviews. Which, by the way ,have helped me tremendously. But I have stayed for the shoes and everything else. I am not a runner. I just walk fast. Or did, I should say. Recovering from injuries. Your videos, like this one, and the ones for balance have helped me more than therapy did. You always give me such inspiration. Early this morning I was on the treadmill and only had 5 minutes left. Five little minutes ! And boy, I did not want to finish. I closed my eyes and pictured you on the mountain. Jeez, if he can do this, I can make 5 more minutes. I don’t know if I will ever run again, but I will be a great fast walker ! Thanks for all you do.
QD: My ankle is actually so supple that it becomes way to flexible. I can bend my ankles outward in a 90 degrees angle... My superpower: I never ever twist my ankle in a way it hinders me while running; my weakness: while running I can do a combined overpronate/suppinate thing where my ankle just goes wherever it wants.
Hill bounding as you're doing in this video is a very important part of early-stage training in the Lydiard method. Most people neglect this, partly because it's very stressful in the lower legs. You did a good job talking about being cautious and implementing it slowly.
What's also interesting is that the new superstar of track and field, Hobbs Kessler, has a background in rock climbing. He's only been running for 4 years, broke the high school record in the indoor mile (3:57). Then ran 3:34:3 in the 1500, also a high school record. And that time equates to a 3:51 mile!! I'm guessing that rock climbing had to help a fair amount, as it would seem to involve a lot of plyometric type of workload. Two years ago he was in the finals of the world youth rock climbing competition.
QD: STIFF with a capital S!!!! I learned this the hard way running a marathon in early June. I came up with a calf strain at mile 17 and it was the most miserable miles of my life to finish! I’m on a new routine now involving percussion gun, rolling, and stretching! At 37yrs old though I’m behind the 8-ball! This message is so important for runners of all skill levels! Stay supple and keep the vlogs coming 🤜🤛
Qod, definitely supple. Seth, did you know that Tom Bradys' TB12 training program is based on muscle pliability. His trainer is the one who convinced him to try it. The basic principle is to use less weights, with much more stretching and plyometrics in order to allow the tendons to lengthen, which in turn allows him to absorb more contact without getting injured, and thus recover more quickly as well.
Mentioning the triple jump brings me back to high school track. My ankles were not as strong then as they are today because of consistent training and KT tape. You are 100% right about the lower leg suppleness. I am working through an ankle tweak (not calling it an injury) and just purchased a slant board to help with the stretch.
QD: Supple - I have spent a lot of time working on my ankles because they have been the limiting factor when I was younger. I use resistance bands and spend time working above and below the ankle - calves and feet. I also like to use the leg press for calf raises. The trails where I live are also quite sandy which has been incredible for helping my ankles.
This is the honestly the most inspiring video I've seen for running in a long time. I've forgotten how important the rest of our legs are. This is what I needed to remind myself to train more than just my aerobic capacity. I need to get stronger
Seth, i love that you talk about these details that can help improve our running and also avoid injuries. Your channel got me serious into running since the start of the year, last June i finally did my first half marathon. Working on a full marathon before the end of the year! DGR STRONG! Would love to know more about your gym routine and advice for runners that also love lifting. Thanks for the videos and more power to you and your lovely family❤️😀
I started running in lower drop running shoes about two years ago and I think it allows for a deeper ankle flexion and thus can create more of a flick on toe off.
QD: I originally come from a swimming background, where ankle flexibility is extremely important. Unfortunately, due to the lack of impact, I never had much opportunity to strengthen it in a way that would be beneficial to running. I've found that it has been one of the biggest challenges as I've started running to strengthen the ankle AND keep it mobile, but it's also where I've seen the most improvement. All the specific lower-leg work has finally allowed me to run consistently and without injury.
A big high-5 and shout-out back at ya from Ireland. Thanks Seth. It was nice to see the green singlet flying again. Enjoyed the video as always. Keep on keeping on 🇮🇪 + 🇧🇪 + 🇺🇸👍
Definitely stiff and had an ankle injury also recently... watched your prehab video and bought the primasole balance disk...have been working out the excersis you showed and i can feel a great improvement, Thank you Seth,
Interesting subject. One of my co-workers just ruptured both Achilles tendons ! As an older runner and former gymnast, I am always aware of the lose of elasticity in my muscles and am especially careful with my achilles.
I never really noticed until there now, that spring on the toe and ankle work. It was only then that skipping increases my speed. So simple yet so effective. 🇺🇲🇮🇪
QD: My ankles/Achilles are very stiff. I ruptured my achilles tendon in November last year and i’m only now just starting to get back to running. Seth you talk about cringe well watching you perform those drills in slow motion made my achilles bark at me, I could barely watch. But you best believe this injury has got me focused on strengthening them so the same injury never recur
Dear Seth, can you make a video explaining why you wear calf sleeves, and your opinion on wearing compression gear for recovery or for during. And your favourite compression gear. Thank you Seth! Lots of love from Malaysia!!!
QoD- Fifty years of working in six inch boots has left me with very stiff ankles and not much range of motion. Lots of stretching/exercises has made my ankles stronger but hasn’t helped the range of motion much yet.
QD Ankles are supple and strong. The only reason they’re supple is that I do exercises for ankle strength/range of motion most days. I personally think it’s best not to wear carbon plated shoes and stiff-midsole shoes based on roll technology ALL the time because they don’t allow you to flex all the joints and connective tissues in the foot and ankle in a normal gait. I also wear shoes with a range of drops for the same reason. I think having a varied shoe rotation keeps my legs and feet healthy. Plus, it’s fun! Martha
QD: more stiff than supple. Part of the reason I’m battling plantar fasciitis. Need to do more drills like what you were talking about! Good stuff man, love the vlogs!
QD: I use to have extremely supple ankles in my younger years. After a decade of powerlifting/bodybuilding, my ankles and tendons became extremely strong but rigid with not much stretch and five as they use to have. Hence why I’ve struggle so much with my Achilles since my return to running.
Meas mór ag dul amach go dtí an DeMoor posse! Your timing was impeccable Ireland won three gold medals in the European U20 Athletics and they were all wearing your singlet today. We don’t win medals often.
QOD: Very stiff these days. I went to an osteopath last week about lower back pain, and he said it’s probably due to me sitting a lot and not stretching my legs enough. I do have your leg stretching routine video saved, I just never rewatch it and follow, while my foam roller is gathering dust… Well, time for assigned stretching!
QD: My ankles are definitely on the stiff side. I do find that the more I get on more technical trails, the stronger my ankles become. I need to continue working on my Achilles’ tendon strength as I’ve been dealing with a stubborn right Achilles
Having some issues with my lower back, it’s been tight lately so I’m doing a lot of stretching to help it loosen up. Might go get an adjustment from a chirp if I can’t get past it soon. It’s definitely getting in the way of my workouts!
QOD: Stiff ankles from a lot of road running… but I do some trail running and seem to have trouble stumbling or tripping so maybe it is due to this or just a poor trail runner. Thanks for the tip!
QD: My ankles tend to be pretty supple. I've rolled them plenty of times whether on trails or even just misplacing a step on the roads, but they always hold steady. It hurts and you hear a pop, but usually I can shake it off and finish out the run.
QOD: Ankles always better than knees. Since running in high school always was my knees causing more problems than anywhere else. Even when shin splints have been at their worst, it never compared with how debilitating IT band and other knee issues have been.
I agree to avoid things like Achilles Tendonitis. You have to apply a healthy amount of stress on the tendon to allow more elasticity and strength. Thank you for sharing. Keep turning that door knob. DGR 💪!!
QD: More supple than stiff, but I'm forever doing exercises with them, if I'm watching TV you can guarantee my feet are doing circles & letters, it drives my wife crazy! 😂🏃
QD: Used to have weak ankles, but stopped wearing ultra cushioned shoes, and have been incorporating barefoot running shoes into the rotation to strengthen the feet and lower leg
I’ve never been more excited for the Olympics but I have mixed feelings about it based on what’s happening with COVID. Jamaica 🇯🇲 is filled with sprinters and I loved watching the Olympics especially when we dominated. This year as a new runner though I’m excited for everything running but this time around I’m more into distance running, so now I have two things to look forward to as I have found new love for the sport of running. As for the question of the day I’ve never had any ankle or Achilles pain so I’d think there’re a bit supple and I do a lot of hill running, my runs start up hill and end up hill.
Seth, we never see you do what a lot of people would think of as traditional high effort hill repeat workouts. I would love to hear your input on this type of interval work for runners. For example, every other week I do six 3-minute hills at near max effort which end up being regressive splits. A workout recommended by Dylan Bowman
Well if you are ever running in Australia and you go past me feel free to stop and help me with my ankle flexion, or for that matter any of my form faults ☺️
I'll be 65 years old this year. My favorite hill I run up is now taking 55 minutes instead of 40. I can't get the stride and the bounce anymore, my heart rate is going through the roof. Maybe I'm just not supple enough. Any thoughts ??
I'm 60 and still run a lot. My saying is I train harder to run slower. In reality, I'm faster at 60 than 55. The margin for error just decreases as we age. I have to train really hard for a small gain, but I still love running and it brings me great joy. Just keep turning that doorknob.
QD: Mine are probably a little stiffer than they should be. I am still recovering from surgery, so I think all of me is still a little stiff. But we are working on it, and working to get back to it.
Seth (if you see this, and I know the 50 mile review is likely to come) or anyone, love to see the Skechers making it out on the trail. When do you think the brand will make the push to ultras or elite ultra trail runners will make the move to Skechers? I could be wrong, but trail shoes seem new for them, and I assume it’s mostly sponsor driven. But love the shoes. Nice to see a Skechers trail shoe on your feet in the mountains .
QD: yes indeed Supple than stiff I’ve been walking on my tippy toes lol since young so my ankles and feet are very flexible naturally also I was in marching band in school and college. So my ankles and feet are strong too but of course I’m working each day for more power 💪🏾🙏🏾🏃🏾♂️🏃🏾♂️🏃🏾♂️🏃🏾♂️🏃🏾♂️🏃🏾♂️🏃🏾♂️
QD: my ankles are weak and feet are week due to my hokas, but I love my hokas to much, so I’ll continue to have stiff ankles and feet I guess, but I do strengthen them
My ankles are the opposite of supple! They crack loudly (no pain ever) and I struggle with squatting as I have a severe lack of flexibility in my soleus and ankle in general so can barely squat to parallel. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I’m always impressed by how many extra steps he must take to get all the little shots of him going to/from the car or reaching the summit of a peak on his own.

Hey seth were did u get the irish vest im from here 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Yup the triple jump makes me 🙈

Late on this but watching from Ireland!

Why do you drive with your headlamp turned on?
What brand of your drone?
Was that elevator synth jazz?! 🤔😂
Seth if you ever get stopped by the cops and they find scales in your Honda they might think your a dealer 😀
Seth do you leave the camera after you drive off? And do you stop to get out of the car to get the camera?
If you do, I call that dedication
I’m always impressed by how many extra steps he must take to get all the little shots of him going to/from the car or reaching the summit of a peak on his own.
Yes, he does 😊 Lots of back and forth to produce a vlog like this
does someone fly the drone or does it follow you automatically? I'm so confused :)
It follows him automatically
