In the military on long runs we sing cadence & at first it makes you feel like you can’t breathe but after you get used to it not only does it give you a rhythm but also forces you to breathe in less frequently. I still sing them in my head while running to this day 😅
@@Nommedeguerre wow, didn’t know there was actual science behind it! I did try joining the military once and trained for it. When I ran, I listened to cadences but that was more for motivation and getting into that headspace. I had no idea I was training by breathing too xD
How are you feeling if you don’t mind me asking I see this comment is from two years ago and I want to know if your body got used to running and breathing while running?! Thanks I’m advance ..
@@FKA-91 I went through the same thing, my experience was it takes a lot of patience and thinking about breathing as a new runner. It also takes some time to find your natural cadences during those different types of breathing. Don't be discouraged because that time is probably between 3-6 months depending on what condition your body is in before starting to run. It's like anything, running, biking, weight training, it needs time to build and get your body used to it. this was a great video that helped me a lot.
@@FKA-91 Maybe this helps, as it's what has helped me when practicing: In order to breathe slowly, you need to adjust your running pace accordingly. If you run too fast (which is a common thing for beginner runners), your body will automatically yearn for more oxygen and cause you to breathe faster and lose control. Take some time to experiment with a casual and "easy" pace that doesn't exhaust you and allows you to look around you and let your mind wander etc. Then gradually count the rhythm of your steps and breathe according to that rhythm -- the 4-in 4-out is one that I really enjoy for a steady pace. And please don't forget that your speed is irrelevant here, this is an endurance pace that focuses on sustainable running, not sprinting.
Breathing: Nose breathing in out Nose in mouth out Mouth in out Slow long run: Breath in nose 4/6 steps Breath out nose 4/6 steps Most running: Inhale 2 steps Exhale 4 steps Fast running: Inhale 2 steps Exhale 2 steps
I’m a beginner-level runner who’s struggled with breathing while running for years. I’d gas out way too fast during a run, resorting to slow down to a brisk walk pace. The 3 breathing patterns explained in this video really help. I employed the slow-in/slow-out pattern and noticed an increase in my pace right off the bat. I ran farther before gassing out so soon - something I’ve been wanting to do for so long now. I’m constantly looking to improve my running and now I know what to focus on. Thanks a lot!
I’m going to try to keep this in mind. I’ve never been a great distance runner. I just want to be able to eventually run a mile none stop. Maybe one day my ankle will be strong enough. Good tips. Thank you.
Wow thank you for this! I used to only be able to run for 2 minutes then got extremely tired, like I had asthma. I just tried the second technique and I ran over 25 minutes straight! Never knew that breathing mattered this much.
ideally when you run you should run at a pace where you can still hold a conversation. Ofc not when you’re going for faster times but when you do longer distance you shouldn’t be red lining it lol.
I actually feel better when I talk to my running partner as we jog than if I don't...I almost feel like it makes me breathe the proper way when I do....I don't know, but I generally feel better if I'm talking during a jog.

I like two in though the nose and two out through the mouth, the air through the nose warms up for you lungs and out with the bad air through the mouth. I never feel out of breathe using this method, keep at a nice steady pace. Once you learn to run and over time you’ll hit that feeling you could run forever! It’s an amazing feeling of inner strength ❤️
Wow. I could tell something was wrong with my breathing as I just started my first runs. Never knew I could train myself to do it right and fix the issues! Thanks a lot
I'm 55 and I have never in my life been able to run very far - not because I'm tired, but because I feel like I'm gasping for air. I finally gave up 30 years ago because I could not figure out how to breathe while running. I resorted to walking. But, this video was worth more than my K-12 years of education combined. I'm going to start off very slowly tomorrow and use these techniques to see I can finally do this right. Thanks so much. Wow! What an education in only 10 minutes.
Did my first 10k today after only just managing a 5k 2 months ago, done no real training in between apart from 5 minute treadmill warmups before weight training at the gym. I didn't care about time, I focused entirely on my breathing and keeping it to a pace I was comfortable with, worked a treat.. 1:05 for my first 10k, I was fully expecting to have to walk some of it but I didn't stop running once just kept my breathing in sync, legs hurt like hell on the last km but I felt great when I finished it.
So am I the only one who runs in 5 beats? 3 in, 2 out with my steps. Works at every speed for me. Also, keeps your individual sets starting on opposite feet, which makes me feel more balanced for some reason. Also, this works pretty well to the song Take Five, by Dave Brubeck. Almost exact tempo he is running in this video, which is my same pace. All these other techniques, the slow one, the 2 beat one, they all give that lack of oxygen feeling. Try out the 5's, friends!
YES!!!! I have been desperately searching for breathing videos on my hiking channels and all they talk about is ultralight gear and how to build muscle. It’s the breathing and pacing that has been my weakness. I’m recommending you to all my hiking buddies! Thank you for covering this topic. So important!
Having smoked prior to stumbling upon this in my recommended feed, there were some unintentionally hilarious parts that made this even better. Thanks for the information man, now to just learn how to run fast enough to break the sound barrier.
Wow thank you so much for this advice, I did my 5km run this morning and I was not out of breath, and also did the slower pace.I didn’t know about this . I am in my 4th week of running and I was getting afraid that I’m was going to give up because of always being out of breath.I’m enjoying running now. What a game changer for me.Thank you so much for creating videos with great advice.
Loved the specifics in this video! Many videos on breathing are 10 minutes of "breathe through your nose into your stomach"! That doesn't really help when I'm out on the trail struggling. I've always done the 4/4 method, but when I went faster, I'd breathe IN 4 and OUT 2, but I'm definitely trying 2/4 tomorrow on my speed run! And way to go Nora, leaving that pup in the dust!
Thank you. That came at the perfect time. I have those days when i get a side stitch on the first few steps which simply increases during the run and sometimes leads me to have to stop. I'll try to incorporate more "mindful" breathing into my runs...hope that will help me to train my breathing mechanics more.
I have a race coming up and I’m trying to beat my coworkers so this will definitely help. Although I already do some of these techniques, I have not paired my breathing with the steps and speed, I just found this channel and I’m so glad I did. 👍
I've ran on and off for years and started back again this year (before lockdown). Being asthmatic, slightly overweight and unfit has been hard to get going.. but most of all my breathing i end up gasping but over the past two days i've been trying the in nose and out through the mouth and it is difficult but I feel it relaxes me so much more and when I find it lapsing I switch down my pace and correct the breathing and try and relax again... thank you so much love the videos!! (Scotland Runner!)
On the point of breathing, this video was a revelation to me . N ever knew breathing and running are so correlated and interconnected in such a crucial manner. Please keep it up. Thanks.

Watching your video just made me realise that i never notice my breathing when i'm running. Of course i breathe hard if i run hard but since i concentrate on other things i'm just not aware i'm breathing. Must be a good thing i suppose
I don't know why but i have been watching this video while taking very deep breaths the whole time and i just thought about the feeling of running and felt a wave of happiness flow through me. It's random but I just thought i should share it.
This was a great breakdown. Breathing along with knowing your paces make a huge impact on performance. It really takes me back to running the mile back in HS. Run the bends (fast/slow), sprint the straights (fast/fast)
you saved me,! thank you ! the fast in and slow out - NONE EVER mentioned to me, i was gasping for air with the same ratio breathing 2/2, 4/4, 6/6. whereas, 2/4 or 2/6 are the absolute best for me. - i have been using it in c25k programme now and it is a life saver. with this in my toolbox i feel i could train to run almost any distance eventually. thank you so much!
This is excellent! Well done! Thanks for sharing. Especially appreciate the level of detail - just enough info to cover the subject without overwhelming it. 😎
I tried delaying my inhalations today on an MTB ride. My first segment was pretty bad, but the next three were very good. Thanks for the tip and the explanation!
Breathing correctly for mtb is super important. I have a hard remembering TO breath on some black diamonds headed down the steep. Definitely not a place to forget how to breath.
I've always controlled my breathing when running by spreading my breaths in across three steps and out across three steps in a kind of staccato rhythm where I don't completely stop an inhale/exhale but rather surge the inhale/exhale a little with each step. It may seem odd but it has been an easy way to control my breathing and I have no trouble running 15+ km daily without getting tired or out of breath.
When on a long run I like to breathe in slowly through my nose for about 4 to 6 breaths, then breathe out quickly through my mouth. It makes my long runs more relaxing.
I have been doing a 3step in and out for my PT tests since 1999. This is the first i have heard of someone else using there steps. I will have to try this out. Thanks!
Speaking as someone who has enjoyed running for about 30 years without ever getting particularly intense or technical about it, no matter what the distance or speed, inhale for 3 steps and exhale for 3 steps. It's as simple as that.
It would be helpful if you listed the 3 techniques in the “additional info” pull-down menu. Thank you. For me personally, I enjoy the videos where you are just standing still recording, not running and trying to talk at the sam time.
I’ve been struggling to progress with running because my breathing has been holding me back. I tried out the principals from this video today and I ran further than I ever have ever run before. Thanks for explaining about how carbon dioxide plays a role, that information changed my whole outlook.
What a solid way to show breathing patterns and be able to talk about it, too. That's walking the walk and talking the talk. Or is that running the run…?
I quit smoking almost 4 months ago. I’ve been going to the chiropractor to get my hip and thigh straightened out all in hopes of becoming an avid jogger/runner. I hope I can manage this endeavor without dying from breathing problems. But that is why I’m here! To learn breathing techniques so that I can run efficiently.
So cool to see this reconfirmed! At school I had the chance to run with someone who taught some famous Politicians running. I never really ran much since then, but I started again recently. I had his „4 steps breathe in, 4 steps breathe out“ rule in the back of my mind but 2 steps in, 4 steps out always felt better for me and this video perfectly shows me this is okay for my running style 👌
This is fantastic. Exactly what I needed to learn to improve. I LOVE going on this run with you what a gorgeous place and doggie. Super inspiring and informative.
My fast in slow out is in for two, out for three. That way it alternates which footfall my exhale lands on. I worry that it might be having me breathe a bit fast, though.
I think that your awareness of your breathing patterns is the real win here as well as you ability to manipulate it depending on where you are and what you're doing :)
Love that quote ‘how to run while breathing’ I need this as always breathe in through my mouth, been practicing belly breathing as it’s even affected my sleep pattern, very helpful post… 👍
When I was on Holliday there I could only find Crissy fields to run and the big Golden Gate park, I wish I knew about this area. Looks quite nice with great views.
I do CrossFit, which is high intensity and short. I've tried breathing deep but feels out of control. Obviously, it is out of control when you're giving 10 and about to fall over. But after watching your video, I can see where I need to bring my breathing more under control. I'll try these techniques to ease in, medium and fast, which would all be better than what I'm doing now.
The following works for me: every time in the second part of the run I do 6 sets of 4in, 4 hold, 8 out, then 8x 2in/2out (repeat 5 more times). I have been also do apnea for five months now, which enlarged my lung capacity. Even in hill training (usually 1200 feet elevation ), I can still maintain the O/CO2 ballance. I reccomend an apnea certified course to activate your lungs, diaphragm, inter/rib muscles and the upper-lung capacity.
You truly helped me unlock my breathing technique. Your methods and teachings are so straightforward, this helps for any beginner runner. Thank you so much!!
When I cramp, I pick up a pebble and hold it in my hand or in between two fingers. Focusing on not dropping the pebble, helps me to forget about the pain of the cramp.
Andrew Benton interesting, I’ll have to try that. If I get a stitch, it’s always on my right side and usually after 10-12 km. I’m not really sure why it happens like that.
I am a very moderate runner because my work doesn´t usually leave me much time to train, but it was only three years into this sport that someone was really patient enough to teach me how to breathe. He told me to count 6 or 8 steps then exhale on the last one. It works in a way but maybe I´m getting bored of the same technique, so my next run, which will probably be tomorrow, I will follow the advice given in this video. Talking while you run uphill is impressive, and thanks for the tips.
These days I discovered that your videos are really helping me. I was running with a friend and I started telling her something (a long story, by the way) and didn't get tired, lol. I was astonished. Thanks!!
Good advice. But I still feel winded. My legs are fine but I'm out of breath. Do I power through it? How hard do I press myself? I seem to have plateaued at a 9 min. mile and can't seem to improve on that. Try wind sprints? I see you talking while running up hill and I'm saying, I'd have passed out at that pace, let alone be able to talk.
You can try running slower at a longer distance. Press yourself as far as you can but rest is very important and it's going to be a painful journey so have must have a very strong mindset throughout the whole journey. Dont give up no matter how hard it gets
Something my friends and I figured out for a good pace when running cross country or long distance in track is that you can determine how well you're paced depending on how well you can talk while running. If you can talk and talk and talk, you can probably push a little harder but if you can hardly get a word out without losing your pace then it may be good to slow down a bit. We found that you wanna be relatively comfortable but not too comfortable
“Slow in (over 4-6 steps) slow out (over 4-6 steps)” diaphragmatic breathing, keeps you slower “Fast in (over 2 steps), slow out (over 4-6 steps)” still preventing hyperventilation, but allows for faster running “Fast in (over 2 steps), fast out (over 2 steps)” keep it diaphragmatic, shoulders relaxed, useful for shorter periods
Great video - very informative. And what a beautiful place to run with your dog!! I find I normally have a 3-in/3-out breathing pattern, and when I step up the pace it tends to be the outbreath that speeds up so I end up with a 3-in/2-out. Having watched this video I’m going to try consciously switching that to fast in / slow out.
I need this! This is me 100%. I want to run/jog so bad, but my breathing is messed up. I just don’t know how to do it right. I feel like I’m going to run out of breath, panic, get anxiety that I’m going to get dizzy and pass out. So I quit and feel it’s just not meant to be for me. The desire is there, but my breathing gives me fear. Hope this helps me!
You can get started. On your next run, why don't you get started with a 3-5 minute brisk walk and then practice easing into an easy jog for 1-3 minutes, then going back to a walk when your breathing gets a little out of control. Continue alternating between running and walking for as long as you like !!
I started doing breathing exercises when I came across Wim Hoff, his breathing technique is awesome when you’re out of shape. I love being able to jog again. This is much more active and hopefully help ,y breathing game moving forward.
I have COPD, so I find myself gasping within the first 2 minutes of a run. So "conversational pace" is not really something I can ever do. I've worked hard to strengthen my diaphragm through inspiratory muscle training, which helps, and trying to be more conscious of my breathing patterns. This information was really helpful.
Dude the more you talk while running I can’t breathe just sitting here

Weirdly, I find this video very therapeutic and relaxing. Love how his dog is going along running with him!
On the point of breathing, this video was a revelation to me . N ever knew breathing and running are so correlated and interconnected in such a crucial manner. Please keep it up. Thanks.
2:27 *nervously glances at pooping nora* ~continues to talk about taking to big of a load
when said load is released 2:50 nora can run at the speed of a jet.
Dude, you're amazing running all that way while holding your drone in one hand and talking all the way. Thanks for your videos!
Off topic but lol I'm also a TWD fan, um it's also spelt Carl Grimes, unless u meant to spell it like that but have a great day :]
@@memezorwhatever1323 it's a reference to the Rick dad joke memes from years ago.
It's nice meeting another fan, how long have you been into the show?
you saved me,! thank you ! the fast in and slow out - NONE EVER mentioned to me, i was gasping for air with the same ratio breathing 2/2, 4/4, 6/6. whereas, 2/4 or 2/6 are the absolute best for me.
So glad I discovered this channel 😊
Thanks! Keep watching for more running & wellness info. Welcome to the community
The lady at 7:58😂😂
Excuse me for the 2yrs late comment but where are you running? The view looks amazing!!
Thank you so much
I always struggled on how to start breathing at the start of my run
Ill practice method #2
When on a long run I like to breathe in slowly through my nose for about 4 to 6 breaths, then breathe out quickly through my mouth. It makes my long runs more relaxing.
Wow. Very commendable video. The fact that you were able to teach us how to do it and run the whole way through is admirable. Kudos to you sir.
I have been doing a 3step in and out for my PT tests since 1999. This is the first i have heard of someone else using there steps. I will have to try this out. Thanks!
Speaking of load, the dog dropping one @ 2:33 had me dead
I love your run route, all people with dogs off-leash, running, walking LOVE THAT!
Speaking as someone who has enjoyed running for about 30 years without ever getting particularly intense or technical about it, no matter what the distance or speed, inhale for 3 steps and exhale for 3 steps. It's as simple as that.
Like breathe for 1,2,3 and exhale for 1,2,3?
It would be helpful if you listed the 3 techniques in the “additional info” pull-down menu. Thank you. For me personally, I enjoy the videos where you are just standing still recording, not running and trying to talk at the sam time.
Forgets to hit record 🙃
Holyshit. His dog running and the car sound passing by in sync made me think like his dog straight up fostered the energy from Norse Gods.
That was a jet passing by
So cool to see this reconfirmed!
Super inspiring and informative.
the dog at 2:33 in the background is the most beautiful pupper
Head north over the Golden Gate bridge and you have a playground of trails awaiting!
What a great video Coach Nate - really made me think about focusing on my breathing patterns.
2:28 He totally saw that dog taking a shit 👀
I'm dying laughing 😂😂😂
You truly helped me unlock my breathing technique. Your methods and teachings are so straightforward, this helps for any beginner runner. Thank you so much!!
You're so welcome!
What's the best way to recover while running when you get that side or stomach cramp? And stopping is not an option lol
I find that if you focus more on the exhale, you can work it out. also keep running. good luck
exhale when the opposite foot hits, so cramp on right side of stomach, exhale on left foot strike
total concentration, flame breathing 8th form
Bro, a dog will never fail for maximum comedy ...
Loose some weight. I plateaued around 9:30 lost maybe 10lbs then I was able to run about 8min
I'm a beginner runner and these lessons are so helpful thank you.
Thank you for the info! Should I breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth?
Something my friends and I figured out for a good pace when running cross country or long distance in track is that you can determine how well you're paced depending on how well you can talk while running. If you can talk and talk and talk, you can probably push a little harder but if you can hardly get a word out without losing your pace then it may be good to slow down a bit. We found that you wanna be relatively comfortable but not too comfortable
This was really informative and helpful. Thank you!!!
“Slow in (over 4-6 steps) slow out (over 4-6 steps)” diaphragmatic breathing, keeps you slower
“Fast in (over 2 steps), slow out (over 4-6 steps)” still preventing hyperventilation, but allows for faster running
“Fast in (over 2 steps), fast out (over 2 steps)” keep it diaphragmatic, shoulders relaxed, useful for shorter periods
Great video - very informative. And what a beautiful place to run with your dog!! I find I normally have a 3-in/3-out breathing pattern, and when I step up the pace it tends to be the outbreath that speeds up so I end up with a 3-in/2-out. Having watched this video I’m going to try consciously switching that to fast in / slow out.
this channel has helped me improved so much. glad I found this channel ! thank you TRE
Why would anyone run on a tread mill when they have the great outdoors
I need this! This is me 100%. I want to run/jog so bad, but my breathing is messed up. I just don’t know how to do it right. I feel like I’m going to run out of breath, panic, get anxiety that I’m going to get dizzy and pass out. So I quit and feel it’s just not meant to be for me. The desire is there, but my breathing gives me fear. Hope this helps me!
BENITOHERNANDEZ75 let's run now!
You can get started. On your next run, why don't you get started with a 3-5 minute brisk walk and then practice easing into an easy jog for 1-3 minutes, then going back to a walk when your breathing gets a little out of control. Continue alternating between running and walking for as long as you like !!
This helped! Track starts next week so I can use this for the workouts!😀👍🏻
This information was really helpful.
so swimming is out ? or can it help ?
