    What games would you buy to start a fresh board game collection if you only had $100?

    • @DeyaViews

      I would likewise go for Modern Art (or High Society), because I want to have an auction game! They drive so much player interaction. Similarly, I want a tile laying game, so I'd go for Azul (though Blue Lagoon or Babylonia would do great too). Azul has seen a lot of success with my friends and family. King of Tokyo has likewise seen a lot of success and is more on the opposite end of no luck/lots of luck involved, while still having strategy.
      I think with those three I might be close to the budget limit already? If not, add in a small social card game like Coyote or No Thanks!

    • @AllYouCanBoard

      Those are great choices! I (Dylann) considered Azul too. I just love it so much.

    Uggh this is AGONIZING to decide, but here's my list:
    Cascadia - $34.95
    Twice as Clever - $18.95
    Codenames - $16.95
    One Night Ultimate Werewolf - $21.95
    Nice deck of playing cards - $ 6.95 (Regicide)
    Total: $99.75

    Great list, you could also do something without a budget "If I could only own 5 games for the rest of my life...". So many aspects to consider similar to this videos. Great video guys. I think for me 5 games to keep would be Lost cities, Camel Up, Quest for El Dorado, and Modern Art/Fake Artist Goes to New York. Such a tough budget to live by.

    Really cool idea. Was hard for me to nail down a list and kept changing things but settled on Unmatched Cobble and Fog ($29 USD), Cascadia (Got it from my LGS for $25 so counting it haha), Under Falling Skies ($20 on sale right now online), Codenames Duet ($14, my wife loves this game), and The Crew Mission Deep Sea ($11, fills the multiplayer co-op slot for cheap).

    • @scottmcfarlane7524
      @scottmcfarlane7524 2 роки тому +1

      Good luck finding Cobble and Fog let alone at that price..plus you are using US as these guys are using CDN from my area. Under Falling skys has a MSRP of 29.95 not sure where you found it on sale I was looking lol

    • @draheim90
      @draheim90 2 роки тому +2

      @@scottmcfarlane7524 Pretty sure they said we could use our own country's currency, unless I'm misremembering. Would be weird for me to do the list in Canadian bucks given it's not how I purchase things. I don't think the point of the video was "who can find games the cheapest for $100 CAD or under" but "If you had $100, ignoring tax and shipping, what games would YOU buy?". Also MSRP is a useful anchor but not a good criterion for this sort of list. Most games can be readily found anywhere from 10-30% under MSRP, and sometimes less.
      Cobble and Fog - got it from my LGS for $29 in March, they currently have it in stock for $32 atm. but it's listed at $28.85 from Gamesroll (in stock) and $25.85 at Boarding School games (appears to be in stock).
      Under Falling Skies - currently $24 at my LGS, $21 on Game Nerdz and $19.99 at Cardhaus Games.

    Tough decision, as I can't live within US$100 limitation,, because I have to have these seven classics -
    1) Ra
    2) Web of Power = China
    3) Serengeti = Templari
    4) High Society
    5) Schotten Totten = Battle Line
    6) Lyngk
    7) Azul (original)

    • @AllYouCanBoard
      @AllYouCanBoard  2 роки тому

      Haha fair enough, that's an excellent list but that's the whole point of the video! I also can't technically live without Carcassonne, Agricola, Race for the Galaxy, etc... but if you HAD to make the impossible decision of staying within $100, it's a fun thing to think about. Nobody's list will be perfect.

  • @HowardAbraham

    Great concept for a video; it was thoroughly enjoyable! My list would be bent towards what I am playing mostly now: Gloomhaven JotL, Lost Cities, Sushi Go, and The Mind. If I can find a sale on something I would add High Society - a game on my short list.

    As a collection starter I would always go hunt for older second hand games. I don't know how it is everywhere else, but in the Netherlands there are loads of copies floating around of games like Tigris and Euphrates, Ra, Mexica, Puerto Rico, El Grande, Power Grid, Caylus, etc. You can find those for around €15-€20 each. So, I would go for Tigris and El Grande, and add to that No Thanks, Bohnanza, Quest for El Dorado, and a cheap Go set.

    • @AllYouCanBoard
      @AllYouCanBoard  2 роки тому +1

      That's fair, although it's tough for us to use the "used games" criteria because those prices fluctuate soooo much. Setting a hard limit of $100 on only brand new games made the choices much tougher, and we think that makes for a better video.

    • @freek204

    Tough, I’m not precise on pricing, but I’d want something like:-
    Ohanami - as good as Lost Cities at 2, but plays equally well at 3&4
    High Society - great game for 3-5
    Welcome To - my favourite roll & write, good solo game and can go up to any number
    Decrypto - love word games and this is the best. Codenames could be a cheaper alternative though.
    Skull - also be good to have a proper fun party or pub game in the mix. Cockroach Poker could be subbed in if cheaper.
    I doubt that this’d leave me with any budget - but it’d be nice to add in Ticket to Ride London or New York. I enjoy this shortened budget version of the game - and it would mean having an actual board game in the list.

      For us it's a game that we have a lot of respect and appreciation for, but for whatever reason, it fell a bit flat for both of us. We don't actively dislike it or anything, I think maybe we just heard people rave about it for so long that we were expecting it to be more up our alley. Undoubtedly a great game, just not really for me.

    Poah that is a difficult one.
    - Quest for El Dorado, covers racing + deck building and works for 2-4: 23,99
    - Nimmt6, works up till 10, also good party game: 8,99
    - Carcassonne, BGA is not going to cut it for me: 21,99
    - The king is dead 2nd edition. I want at least 1 area control game, this is light therefore likely to get to the table and also plays with two players: 26,99
    - Hive. I need a 2 player only game. Santorini is great but indeed just a bit too expensive. And it is more than just cards. 14.99
    - 3 euro left to buy a pack of regular cards.
    Honorable mentions are lost cities (2 player portable card game, hive only slightly fills the niche of portability), and hansa teutonica (would have swapped the king is dead, but the 3-5 player count is just not likely enough to happen).

      Sorry for the delay, Austin. I'm not sure where you're located, so it's tough for me to say, but if you check www.boardgameoracle.com and set your region in the top right (hopefully you're in one of those regions) then type in Modern Art, it'll show if it's available at any retailers and I think it even sorts from lowest price to highest.
      Don't worry though - if the CMON version doesn't restock anywhere soon, I imagine this is a game that will keep getting reprinted over and over because so many people love it.

    Hard!! Especially in Australia where everything costs so damn much.
    1. Brew or Living Forest. $37 each. These are both incredible games for very great cost and high replay value. Personally I'd probably lean toward Brew.
    2. Greed - $12. Push your luck dice game that has dominated many of our game nights for hours to the point its all we play those nights. Highly rated for any collection.
    3. Roll for it - $19.95. Another push your luck, dice drafter, plays up to 8. Amazing game for its price point imo.
    4. Marvel splendor- $24. Just because it's an insane price right now, love splendor and marvel. Good option for its price when making this list.
    5. Uno - $5.60. Don't agree? Draw 4 lol
    6. Deck of plain cheap playing cards $1. Endless variety! Haha
    $99.55. Phew!!
    Honourable mention - could potentially kick marvel splendor, roll for it, and uno just to add in King of Tokyo: Dark Edition. This game is in my top couple of picks, insane replay value, never played it with friends who didn't like it to the point they all bought/we gifted it to them because of how much everyone loves it. But at $55 it's a little pricey when only got a $100!!

    Just now trying to do this I found out how expensive board games really are. I think I would advice anyone doing this to not put to much empathize on getting many games. Get those that are great to you up to a reasonable price point. I think it's better to get 2-3 great ones than 5-6 good games.
    Could be anything really. Maybe something like: Lost Runes of Arnak, Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition and 7 Wonders: Duel.

    • @AllYouCanBoard
      @AllYouCanBoard  2 роки тому

      That's a fair point, although I don't necessarily think more expensive games are better just because they're heavier (in terms of complexity) or have higher production values. I have at least 2 or 3 games in my top 10 that are probably in the $12-$20 range.

      Sorry for the late reply here! It was almost 2 years ago now that I bought it, just through an online retailer here in Canada called Board Game Bliss. A bunch of our Discord members have been telling me lately that they're desperate to get it but can't find it anymore.
      Maybe CMON will do another reprint. If not, I'm sure another publisher will pick it up eventually. It's too good.

      I guess so, but that ruins the fun of the video and the concept in general. At that rate - why not wait for an even better sale? Surely that can't be the best sale of all-time, so where do you say "okay, this sale is good enough"? This was more of a way to pinpoint how we value which games stay in our collection. Plus, I try to avoid supporting Amazon at all costs.
