redneck engineering can be the best on the planet or the worst on the planet, sometimes even both at once! this is coming from experience, I mean my GPU bracket is literally a pill bottle (yes I do realize amazon has them but that costs $1 and is buying from amazon), instead of buying a pre made sim racing setup I just attached some 1/2" plywood to my old gaming chair and then used some woodscrews to attach my flight stick and hotas (I would use a 2nd flight stick but I don't have one on hand), I have a salt gun that has been kitted out with a flashlight tactically hoseclamped to it, a 3d printed sight and mount and a wire coat hanger for a stock... yes I spent like $40 kitting out a plastic salt gun meant for shooting flies and wasps and such... if I had the money I would've put a cheap airsoft laser sight on it...

the heat exhaustion bit reminded me of the article i saw this morning about the Brits having to worry about heat stroke in the record breaking heat wave of 30 degrees Celsius....which in American is about 86 degrees Freedom. and i was like, it was 86 degrees this morning before i even left the house. bless their hearts.
Up here in New England we hit 90 every day last week and it was like the end of times according to the news. First time we've had heat like that since last summer. And one before that....
Bless their hearts, you think 90 and upper 80s hurts, try a month and half straight not dropping below 90 degrees all day, all night. During the day it was 100+ every day. We welcomed 86.
My Dad was assigned to London in the late sixties and one of the summers we were there people who straight up _died_ in 85F weather. It seems that many of the British (espepecially the elderly) only owned WOOL underwear and with their habit of layering to fight the cold... Well, it wasn't pretty.
You passed out twenty minutes after arriving in Atlanta from heat exhaustion... then six possums went through your pockets, a million mosquitoes started snacking on your blood and... oh, speaking of which... you're down to about three pints now. You might want to come round so you can do something about that.

BUT! 40+ years ago I grew up blocks away from Luz-i-ana Ed's Hot Tamales on 15th and NE Alberta in Portland Oregon. A singlewide trailer made into a restaurant. Ed was the kindest soul you'd ever want to meet, he moved to Oregon from Louisiana in the 1970's. I was raised with regular doses of Ed's Southern Red Hot Tamales and Frito Pies. Godspeed Ed, and thank you! I still dream of his food, once ED passed, I've not had another hot tamale. I need to get down south just for dinner! If it weren't for the regular 90 degree days with 90% Humidity in the South, I'd have moved to Alabama or Louisiana years ago just for the food. But alas, my Northwestern genetics mean I would die there. I haven't been down to Alabama or Louisiana since 2001. I require a steady stream of 55 degrees and rain, and when it's clear, below 30% humidity. I can deal with the "dry heat" it's that thick sticky stuff in the Midwest and South, I just can't deal. I may have been born in Massachusetts, but I got an 8-year education in Southern rebellion! My baby brother Sam May have been born in New Hampshire but he is a southerner through and throw as himself. A beautiful wife and three kids lives down in Tennessee in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. And I may be back here in Massachusetts this. But I got a soft spot for the South, the food, the people and the things I learned while I was down there.

I'm all for healthy Southern culture, but I'd like to say that the Western world's disdain for eating with your hands comes from a long history of "barbaric" stereotypes we subjected indigenous peoples to. So as long as people practice proper hygiene, try to accept all ways of eating.

Lived in the south since 2007 and I hate it here. Wish I had a job so I can move. People in the south are so cruel and judgmental. That southern hospitality crap doesn’t exist.
I am so curious to see how bad Atlanta Summers are. Thing is, central Texas has been getting so much worse last couple years and I save my vacations for cool places. 70 degrees in July kinds of places.

You don't want to go to IHOP in Montgomery. It's worse than the Waffle House. Not food wise. But you'll be there 2 hours and just got your food. There will be no one there but your party and one other table.
As a person with a Southern father and a Northern mother I can agree, The Waffle House is amazing. Used to think that it was once a year treat to go there. Looking back it was exactly as you describe it but I still love it.
