1:10 Keep in mind, every piece of animation in this game was hand drawn frame by frame. To think of how much time they must have taken to get this right and to have it loop correctly is INSANE.

It can be easy but when he attacks even with the other heads moving is very hard to do
And even in his intro animation, you can barely see his wings transform into those spooky fingers he makes and back.
Oh, you don’t believe it’s actually his wings? Look closely, since you can actually see his real arms just below his wings in the first part.
Grim was out of touch with the world, or maybe just out of practice; he had no giant horde to guard and he'd have killed for a halfway decent damsel. It was just something dragons did, he told himself. As he moped atop his tower, he was visited by none other than the devil, who (in exchange for the low, low price of Grim's soul) offered him riches to guard or use as he saw fit. Grim was overjoyed. At last, he had a purpose...and he wasn't about to fail.

I think, to be honest, everyone is starting to warm up to Grim Matchstick. Not only is he adorable, but he's sympathetic with his stuttering which makes him a bit sympathetic. Poor guy needs a hug after having been through all that.

For people having trouble:
Use regular shot. You're obviously going to be focusing on avoiding his attacks, and the charge shot is great for this. It deals a shit ton of damage when fully charged, which is enough time to let you dodge attacks. Plus, it takes like 2 seconds to full charge a shot.
Definitetly wanna use lobber, arc that perfectly hits phase 2 with high dps good for phase 3 with a slower firerate but definitely use charge for phase 3 if you can
My go-to is charge and lobber.
The lobber makes this fight a free win tbh. DO NOT USE CHASER, AS IT WILL HARM YOU IN PHASE 3.

One important thing to remember during the second phase, don't just listen, but also look. As soon as you hear the little fireballs look to where it's facing. If it's facing left just jump right, and vice versa. I never got hit during that phase.

Grim matchstick is a gentle, kindhearted, playful, apologetic dragon who didn't even want to fight in the first place.. So that means he really does not like it when he has to kill you over and over..

And he wanted to look scary so he was doing that thing you seen in the intro to look intimidating and threatening.. But isn't really good at it

It's still difficult but you learn very fast and experience from bullet hell games made the airplane sections easier. The game is still challenging all the way through and very fun.

Kinda like sans character dynamic, not necessarily the same. He doesn’t want to hurt you, but he has to, so they are similar. Grim way easier boss fight tho.
Grim Matchstick is no dummy - he breaks the 4th wall at the beginning - looking at YOU the player! He knows who's really pulling the strings here. He also does this in his 3rd form.

I got stuck and gave up on the game for a year because of Grim. Today, I finally decided to sit down and beat him, and I managed to do it after many attempts! FINALLY I can advance to isle three
I feel your pain, I had more trouble with the train and that freaking ROBOT. But grim matchstick was the boss that made me remember his name, he will always be that one boss I dread to even think about

You know those videos that show incredibly hard boss fights, and then they make them look easy?
This was one of those boss fights. Trust me, Grim Matchstick is a living hell.
The funny thing is that Expert Mode is easier with Grim. The clouds fly away from him this time, so you’re more so just aiming in one direction and jumping along.

Him and the genie are just annoying. Both start out great and unique, then the last phase turns the boss from a fun, unique challenge into a "get lucky kid" fight.

I beat the game yesterday, and oh boy, just wait till you reach the robot.
Some Guy I was stupid on the robot boss and didn't realize that you had to parry on the pink things that come out of it's chest so I tried to stay close to it to avoid the lasers.
Grim Matchstick has so much personality and I love that, there is a reason why he's my favourite boss, let's hope to see more of him in The Cuphead show!

Hemara Nicholls I think each boss had their wish granted by the devil and that's where their powers came from. It's also why you need to collect their souls.
Arman Hammer No these bosses lost a bet against the devil and owe the devil their souls but got away. Now cuphead is given a job by the devil to collect the souls of these runaway debtors aka the bosses so the devil would pardon cuphead and mugman and spare their lives.

Probably the cutest dragon ever.
At first the generic dragon design drew me away a bit, but for some reason he grew to be one of the most visually appealing of the bunch, ESPECIALLY in his hydra animation cycle
Grim Matchsticks is one of my favorite characters in the cuphead series (it might be because of the fact I have a strong love for dragons) I wish he had a bigger role in the show

This boss is just annoying, it's not necessarily hard, just damn near impossible to concentrate on everything that's going on at once. The 3rd stage where he goes on the left and has those fireball things come out his mouth is the worst, there's no indication of where those things will jump and because of that you can't really avoid them.
The first 2 stages of this boss are fun, cool, and challenging without being annoying like the last 2.
Fortresst you can actually see where they plan to go, then go the opposite direction. If you think this is bad, wait for High Sea Hijinx and Junkyard Jive.
Maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention, or was just too frustrated to notice.
As for Junkyard Jive though, I love that boss. Yea it's difficult, but not to the point of being just annoying like I found matchstick.

How Grim Matchstick lost his soul:
Being much less smart than a person, he went to the devil for no reason, and went in the casino, the devil hallucinated Grim Matchsick getting snake eyes. Grim was scared and retreated to the clouds, hoping to be safe, then he fought with Cuphead, playing around in a fire-like style. Grim didn't know better. And he was so DEAD!
God, i love this boss' design. He looks so adorable.
In the final phase, I would highly recommend only attacking Grim when he does his flamethrower attack.
I love Grim...spent more time with him than anybody on that game. Would know the song anywhere, and hes such a big dope. Took me about 3 weeks to beat him and afterwards he had put me in a different echelon of Cuphead player altering my perception and technique making the game easier. He was an enemy, a teacher, a supporter, and a friend.

The problem with this one is the RNG. You might get to the 3 headed dragon with 4HP but then nothing but endless fireballs or firestream puts me away. It's never the same number of fireballs either.

For some reason I thought this boss was pretty easy. If you take the green homing missiles, you dont have to worry about shooting and just dodge the projectiles which is not all that hard. Also, you can just save your ult for the last phase which makes it pretty short.
Grim Matchstick was not like other dragons. He was a strange, kind, quirky creature who wanted not to be feared, but simply to live in peace. However, frequent attacks and mistreatment from the public lead him to become bitter, resentful and highly aggressive. Grim had attempted to bottle up his rage for a while, but he finally snapped one day. That day, he sought what he previously considered the unthinkable, to be feared all across the Inkwell Isles. That purpose was finally realised the day he made a deal with the Devil, a deal that gave him newfound powers, riches, and even his own tower to guard, a deal that did not come free of charge. Grim knew this though, and would fiercely defend his soul for as long as he could…
Fun fact: In the 2015 demo of Cuphead, Grim Matchstick’s death animation was his intro animation, as only his first phase was finished and no proper death animation was made at this time. Along with this, his overworld icon in this demo beared a striking resemblance to the one for Rugged Ridge.

OsamaBinLaden dr kahl's robot is the hardest for me...
Here is how I beat it: use charge shot for the entire fight. It will easily go through all of his phases. Also, equip the beam special and save it for the last phase. On the last part, get a few charge shot hits until it uses the first flamethrower move. Than you should be good to go. It took me about 30 tries. And also you should equip the +1 heart charm.
It took me like 50 tries with peashooter for first and third phase and lobber for second as also coffee and Beam

I am a HUGE Grim fan, and I applaud this performance. You didn't even use the Lobber, which would have made this battle's phase 2 easier. You went pro instead.

You made this look so easy... my sister and I have been struggling through all of world 2 so far and we barely make it to phase two of that fight. I'm gonna have to try these strategies
Very tough boss to be sure but funny enough, when first playing him, despite dying many times, very soon I had the feeling this guy was manageable after all, sooner than during fights with Beppy the Clown f.ex. Still, always glad when I get this one down.
I feel like we could have become friends...
Anyway, I got him down fairly quickly, nowhere near as many tries as Beppi or Baroness Von BonBon.
What ya wanna do is to go in with charger and chaser. Give the dragon a taste of fire while dodging the first phase, then when the second phase rolls around, hopefully you will have a full super. Go to the second lowest cloud layer and stand as close to the dragon as you can - this is important, otherwise you will land on his tongue. Once that is done, switch to chaser and blast away. The jumping fire guys laugh before jumping and this is your cue - a little trial and error should let you nail the timing between the laugh and the jump so that you can jump away yourself. Finally at the third phase, switch back to the charge and blast away while doing your best to stay alive. Beware the flamethrower that one of the heads turns into, the top layer of clouds is safe. If you get a super, blast him with it and the fight should be over.
I was able to get through the first 2 phases with no issue. It was the final phase that was driving me crazy. Once I realized the trick was to play slow in that phase, dodge carefully, and most importantly LOBBER- I beat him in like 2 tries after that
Totally stuck on this one. I never thought to use the extra health but I've been using the smoke dash. GOing to give that a try for the final boss.

I'm finally trying out this game for the first time, and this was so far my favorite boss, from his animations, his personality, and his fight itself. He was the most fun to beat.
Stick to the top clouds on the last stage and shoot diagonally down whilst dodging any fireballs. When he uses his flamethrower attack shoot consistently and jump backwards onto another cloud when you need to.
I got an A eventually using this method, hopefully I can nab the A+ at some point.
Nothing satisfied me more than seeing his three stupid heads dying at the end after around 200 attempts of pure rage

This is easily the worst boss I’ve ever had the displeasure of fighting. Outside of his first phase, not a single aspect of the fight isn’t left to random chance. Don’t believe me?
-The cloud platforms
-The fireballs’ appearance
-The fireballs’ jump height
-The fireballs’ jump speed
-The fireballs’ sound effect
-Whether or not they choose to make a sound at all
-How aggressively they attack (even sometimes continuing to home on you as you jump to another platform after their windup.)
-The rate of the fire orbs in phase three
-When he decides to use the bullshit flamethrower attack that is very rarely totally unavoidable.
That’s not even to mention the terrible design throughout the fight, like how the fireballs come from the target you’re trying to hit and explode into four projectiles on impact with your bullets WHILE YOU’RE SHOOTING AT THE FUCKING TARGET.
guys ngl to yall but when i knockout grim on expert mode the thunder struck at the same time. the effect was so beautiful!! the sky was purple and cuphead grim and the clouds were black!! like if you got an effect like that. ig i will never get that moment again...

Honestly, Grim Matchstick isn't as bad as others made him out to be. Only part I've struggled is the hydra phase, but even them it isn't that bad, it's very easy as long as you don't pop the fire bubbles.
once you learn how to move to avoid stuff in p3 this fight isn't that bad, a really balanced challenge actually
This grim is doesn’t want hurt cuphead and mugman.
He views himself as misunderstood and apologizes for being forced into putting the brothers in a hot seat if they lose to him in his second phase. He even suggests that the brothers should run away from him after he turns into a hydra in his third phase

I used Lobber/Roundabout to fight Grim and had a much easier time than Peashooter/Contra
His name is a pun on the legendary Disney animator, Grim Natwick.
I understand that grim is a tough boss but hes truely sorry for hurting you and only wants a friend and look at what he gets nothing but hatred because hes hard boss HES A DRAGON OF COURSE HES DIFFICULT but you keep saying he should die in a hole I for one love this boss

Yep! You can actually see his actual arms just below his wings in the first part of the animation
