    I purchased the Dr. Color Chip Road Rash Repair Kit two weeks ago and finally got the chance to put it to use yesterday. I'm not typically one to review, but I couldn't be happier with this product. I must've had a thousand little chips on the front end of my 325i and after following the instructions in this video, my baby looks fresh off the lot. This stuff really does do wonders. Big thanks to Otto and the Bavauto crew!

    In general, the answer is yes. We have had moderate to good success in repairing long scratches. Actually, the deeper the scratch, the better the success. Certainly give it a try. We would use the "1st method" as you noted; the paint chip repair kit and the BMW touch-up paint. Just experiment with how long you need to let the paint cure, so that the removal process does not "de-paint" the scratch.

    Yes, indeed .... paint color match makes an impact on the final repair. Most would agree, that the filled and repaired chips certainly look better than without, especially when done as shown here, as you do not get the obvious lumps of dabbed-on paint.

    great job on the video. These always motivate me to get these things taken care of on my car. They also clear up my skeptical thoughts on the kit. It seemed too easy, but now I understand it really does look pretty simple.

    If the droppings have eaten into the paint, you'll need to try a standard rubbing compound. This is the most abrasive compound, which then must be followed by polishing compound and then very fine polishing/waxing compound. If the rubbing compound does not go far enough, sanding is the next step.

    Great video! I agree with Bav Auto on primer. Clean and prep with a pre cleaner, use a high quality urethane paint, it will make a permanent repair. There is a lot of misinformation about using primer and 1K clear for hand touch ups. Most of the misinformation is poor translation from spraying automotive urethane paint....totally different technique. Just one tip - always apply a paint sealant to the entire area you repaired. The solvents strip any wax or sealant during the process.

    Your color match will depend on your individual vehicle and how the original paint has aged. Try a small test to see how well the paint matches. We did notice that the Hellrot BMW touch-up paint that we showed in the video (for the Paint Chip Repair kit) was a bit darker than the 18 year old original paint. With this noted, the Road Rash Kit paint was a better match.

    We choose not to specifically show the clear-coat application, as we have found that most people end up not using it. However, the most complete application would indeed include the clear-coat application. In this case, you would keep the color coat a bit concave (below the surrounding paint surface), which would then allow the clear-coat to act as the final "blob' to be leveled down to the surrounding surface.

    Umm ... not sure just what you're asking. However, the Road Rash kit is manufactured by the company that makes the kit. They mix their own paints. The touch-up paint that was used for the Paint Chip Repair kit was factory BMW.

  • @bavarianautosport

    The touch-up paint does not require a primer, for chip repair. Just be sure that the repair area is fully clean, by using the sanding pen and the Wurth or supplied pre-paint cleaner.

    This issue is addressed in the text, on our blog post, that goes along with this video (blog.bavauto.com). Since the touch-up paint is an enamel (which continues to fully cure, over a longer time period), you should really wait a few weeks before polishing and covering it with wax.

    No, we do not. However, if the paint has been damaged pas what a typical rubbing compound, then polishing compound will clean up, You will have to do some sanding and then go back to the rubbing compound and the polishing compound.

    Well ..... it all depends.
    If you can wait to do your detailing work, do the chip repair first and then after at least two weeks, do all of the detailing work.
    OR
    Do all of your detail work, then do the chip repair. Note that you will have top clean the area to remove the waxes and compounds before beginning. Once done, you can spot detail the repaired areas after a couple weeks.

    Hi There, excellent instructional video. I have the kit and shop at bavauto regularly, but I do have one question. I used the exact same procedure, sanding pen etc., and I accidentally left the paint on too long and now the blob remover is not taking down the excess paint. What do you recommend? I did try using the blob remover a second time with more force and the paint bubbles went down somewhat but a lot of paint came off the chips. Suggestions or recommendations? Thanks! p.s. is there a certain temperature range you recommend working in? I have no choice but to do it in my underground parking which is 50 degrees or lower, is that warm enough?

    BavarianAuto- Quick question for you...I have a 2001 e46 Sedan that I just got. I noticed there was a small (maybe 2inx2in) square "hole" in the right side of the front bumper. I assume its either temperature related or some safety feature...My question is, is there supposed to be some sort of "screen" or "insert" that goes in front of it..? Because mine is just completely open and im afraid that something might go into it. Thank you for ANY information!
    Keep up the great vids! They've been an absolute LIFE-SAVER for me!!!

      The hole is likely the access to the point where the tow-eye is inserted. There would normally be a cover in place. We can offer you a replacement cover. Note that it will not be painted. We can also offer you the spray-can matching paint. Contact out advisors at 800-535-2002 or check our online store at bavauto.com . The part is called a tow hook cover.

    Thanks for a great tutorial. I'm a BMW lover with an E39 540i but this paint chip repair is needed for my other car- a 2002 B6 Audi A4. Do your products work equally well with this car? And does one never need to apply primer for all kinds of touchup paints or is it something about BMW paints specifically? Danke!

  • @bavarianautosport
    @bavarianautosport  10 років тому

    Kameron Sshroeder - We can't reply directly to your comment as it was sent in via Google - It really depends on saying how big is too big. In general, you may have a hard time with anything over 1/2" in diameter. The main point is that the bigger the repair spot is, the harder it is to not pull the paint out of the middle of the chip. Letting the paint cure a bit longer can help with this.

    I have a black 1997 BMW 5. There are a number of chipped spots on the front in which the color white is visible. Also, there are several scratches in which a reddish color shows through. So, do I need to apply primer to either before applying the black paint?

      The Road Rash kit does not come with clear. If you are using the Paint Chip Repair Kit, and the BMW touch-up paint, the BMW paint comes with both the color and the clear. We generally do not bother with the clear when filling chips. If you DID want to apply the clear, you would fill the color to a level BELOW the surrounding paint. Let it cure .... then, apply the clear as the final "blob" and use the kit as shown in the video, to level the clear.

  • @CarScratchRemover
    @CarScratchRemover 11 років тому

    I agree with Bav Auto,quality urethane paint will yield a permanent repair. Base color and leveling with a solvent gives the flattest least noticeable repair. I dont recommend clear on top of the base color touch up to my customers. pro's that do hand touch ups leveling method don't typically apply clear either. Hand applied clear coat is not the same as original 2K clear coat finish. If you apply clear on top of the "leveled" base color - you defeat the purpose, end up with a ugly paint bump.

      The BMW touch-up paint does come with a bottle of clearcoat (just clear paint). We typically do not use the clearcoat when doing the chip repairs. However, if you wish to use the clearcoat, you would make sure that the color is below the mzin surface, so that the clear could finish filling the chip and be level with the surrounding paint.

    btw i have a 97 e36 318i bmw how do i go about foinding out what color code it is or the name of it? Its red very very similar to the car you just repaired

      The paint code sticker (on the E36 3-series models) is on the driver side (left side) shock tower, facing the front of the car. The color name will be in the middle of the sticker and the code will be in small lettering at the bottom of the sticker.

    can i use any of these kits for scratches? if not, any recommendations? thanks!

    • @bavarianautosport
      @bavarianautosport  10 років тому +1

      If the scratch is deep enough to hold any paint, either kit will work. If you can't feel the scratch (like catch your fingernail in it), you should be able to polish it out (use the quixx scratch remover polish - www.bavauto.com/fland.asp?part=00050-US).
      If the scratch is through the color coat and does need filling, you can first try either the Road Rash kit or the factory paint and the "Blob Eliminator" kit. (www.bavauto.com) try leaving the paint a bit longer before pulling off the extra, it it tends to all pull out of the scratch.

    just wondering i have a silver m3 1997 and i am curious if you apply a clear coat after applying touch up paint

      For chip repair, we typically do not bother with a final clear coat.

      Why is that? Does the clearcoat not help at all?

    Do you have a video for paint damage from Egg?

    We think that this would be OK. We'd recommend just going at it gently at first to see how it works out.

      @bavarianautosport  11 років тому +1

      The three kits are as follows:
      RRK050 = 1/2-oz paint & 1-oz blending fluid
      RRK075 = 1/2-oz paint & 2-oz blending fluid
      RRK100 = 1-oz paint & 4-oz blending fluid

    What about the clear coat that has been removed? How to you fix that?

      DR chip paint is a mixture of clear coat and car paint.

    Where can I find the paint code for 2013 Mini Cooper Hardtop? Looked everywhere but could not fine it

    • @bavarianautosport
      @bavarianautosport  10 років тому

      The paint code sticker should be on the passenger side strut tower. Look for a rectangular sticker, about 1" x 4". Either black with white lettering or white with black lettering. As a last resort, call our advisors at 800-535-2002 and we can look it up using the VIN.
