  • We've put 1000 miles on our supercharged VR6 Corrado and it's time to review the driving experience so far... what could possibly go wrong?
    by the way, DON'T DRIVE OFF CLIFFS!! (Trust me on this one)

    This is a review of the Stage 1 Z-Engineering supercharger kit, sold by VF Engineering in the USA in the early 2000s, currently produced by RUF Germany. It is a low boost (6-8psi) setup on the 12V AAA VR6 motor. The motor in this Corrado is the OBD1 distributor model, and this particular example has been built with 11:1 compression ratio, Mk4 metal headgasket, ported big valve head, Autotech cams, 2.9L intake manifold & throttlebody, 30# injectors, 4bar fuel pressure regulator, and Momo Corse 2.5" catback exhaust.

But I'm a special kind of crazy.

    I feel like there are no easy and complete kit for sale in the US. Ok, VF has a kit for the mk4 r32 but it's not complete. I believe you need to still source a few other parts like pipes and tensioners

    • @CliffjumperCars

      IF I were to do a kit on my R32, I'd either look for a complete VF kit off a running car (and be *really really sure* I got all the parts necessary) OR I would get a brand new RUF kit from Carlicious in Germany. If I were looking for a brand new kit for a 12V VR6, I'd just buy one from VF since they have a current revised kit that works really well. A buddy just put one on his VR6 Corrado and it's pretty flawless.

    I have been out of the Corrado game for a little over 9 years now but I remember about 10 years ago I was considering a supercharger for my Corrado and there was a company that was working on a cogged belt setup for the supercharger kit to eliminate the tensioner issue, but unfortunately I don't remember the name of the company. Might be worth checking to see if it's worth it.

      That was Gruven Parts, and they did complete the kit for Vortech based superchargers, and it's available by special order, about $900 for the setup. Here's the link:

    After having my Rado in the garage for 12 years, im giving it another go. Excited again. Anyone know where i can get CARB approved HP parts for it? Headers i took off gave it power, but was not smog able. Im in San Diego

      G60 or VR6? I've got a long list of CARB approved parts for both. Might take some effort to track some of them down since some have not been produced in some time, but thanks to all the FB classifieds and forums, it's still possible.
      Check out this post for a good starting list: www.vwvortex.com/threads/the-corrado-carb-eo-number-thread.5015185/#post-67430692

      Those are both fair points. I will have to dig up my dyno sheet, but I think it was 246 at the wheels. This was not a build to produce giant numbers, it was just really for the cool factor of having a supercharger on a VR6 that I was already quite happy with. An extra 40 hp or so. It is not destined to see a track, that’s what my R32 is for, but I could probably bust out the Gtech and record some performance figures. Will have to report back.

    Hey what other supporting mods do you have on your car? I believe Rotrex sells a bit of a more powerful S/C than Z Engineering. A BVH with a good P&P and some 268 cams it would give a nice bump in power. How much for a basic overhaul and rebuild of The MKIV R32? What mods do you have on it? Love VR6's had one back in the day sorry for all the questions. If you have your head out what about a mild P&P on it? How well does the 3.2 VR6 head flow as we all know the head flow of The 12v is its biggest drawback when saying N/A. C2 has been around for years I would trust them, they have a great reputation.
    You went with a great choice of F/I S/C much easier to maintain and with some added cams, head work, etc. You can bump it up in power nicely. If you haven't yet, port and gasket match the upper, lower, and exhaust manifold and or get a 2.9 manifold used and work on the bottle neck around the neck of the manifold. I have read up that the neck of the Intake Manifold cuts off the flow of air and the 2.9 mani is a bit bigger as well. People do the lower and exhaust Gasket match and port and gain 5-8whp depending on mods.

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  7 місяців тому

      It's pretty built on its own without the charger. I originally approached this 12V as a naturally aspirated build, with an 11:1 compression ratio, 264/260 cams, ported big valve head, portmatched 2.9 manifold & throttlebody, portmatched exhaust manifold, modified mass air flow sensor, B4 Passat intake tract, 30# injectors, 4bar fuel pressure regulator, and Autothority software to manage it. Made 204whp pre supercharger, which is a lot for a car equipped with an automatic transmission.
      Because of the higher compression ratio, I chose to go with a light boost pressure setup on the Z1 charger. It's only putting out 6-8psi at most, non intercooled. Yes, I could make a lot more power with a different charger. The newer RUF Z-Engineering chargers that Carlicious sells have a more modern impeller design that is more efficient, and same for the current Vortech based kit that VF Engineering still sells for the 12V VR6. If they didn't cost more than a 3.2L swap, I'd consider going that route.
      But yes, the 3.2 head flows substantially better than the 12V, the variable cam and variable intake setup on the 3.2 in addition to the increased displacement and other improvements in design mean that the stock 3.2 with basic bolt on mods (chip, intake, exhaust) makes as much power as my supercharged 12V. So if I were actually after big numbers, I'd start over with a 3.2 and go from there.
      BUT that's not the point of my build. I just wanted the cool factor of having a supercharged VR6 in my Corrado. It makes plenty of power for my tastes, the transmission seems to be able to handle the power so far * though I don't expect it to last, this transmission has 214k miles on it now, and I do have an O2M six speed manual waiting to go in at some point.

      @@CliffjumperCars I can tell in your response that you are as passionate about The VR6 series of engines. Hey it's a Corrado and yes don't want to stress the stock auto trans too much. Noice! I like that you're going to get a 6spd in the Corrado. I found that with my old 95 GLX VR6 Jetta, when I had to replace the transmission I got a 3.94 FD and that woke the engine up quite a bit. Yet with a S/C you might not want that, but it could be fun if you could swap out the 6th gear for a TDI Gear set up. If your interested in my old set up let me know I'll write it down. The other thing that was unexpected that woke the car up was Bilstein Struts, shocks, lowering springs from Neuspeed. I could have gone Coil Overs, I figured it was a bit of a hassle. Much luck to you in your further VR6 Adventures and I think BFI or Techtonics sells rebuild kits to refresh the engine.

      @@matthewmohri9990 Thanks! Yep, been driving, modifying & racing Corrados since 1994. There's basically not a single part of the car that's been left stock. :) I contributed dozens of DIY tutorials to VWVortex over the last couple of decades, and a couple hundred videos here on UA-cam as well.
      Have gone through a number of suspensions over the years. Currently on a set of BFI coilovers from about 8 years ago, but I'll eventually either go back to Koni coilovers again, or perhaps KW V3. My current ones are only height adjustable, no adjustments for dampening, and I'd love for them to have a bit more dampening in the rear, perhaps all around.
      Refreshed my current motor when I did the headwork about 30k miles ago, still pretty fresh.

      @@matthewmohri9990 I'm not familiar with him, but happy to look him up! I have the new version of the BFI mounts on my Mk4 R32 and I'm pretty happy with them. They didn't quite fit, looked like I got sent a set that hadn't been completed as far as the machining goes, but I was able to do some modifications to make them work. I'm sure they would have sent me ones that actually worked had I wanted to wait for them, but I had a time constraint & needed to get my car back on the road before a hard deadline, so... what warranty? lol
      I used the Vibratechnics race hardness mounts on my old Corrado, and they were pretty aggressive... really shook the car with vibrations at idle, and the engine noise carried through the car strongly.
      I have the street hardness BFI mounts in my current Corrado, and they're perfect. Definitely a little more vibration at idle but not to the point that they shake and vibrate the dash, and they do clean up all the slop between on-throttle and off-throttle.

    Why do you keep touching your gear stick if it’s an automatic? Have you swapped in a 5 speed ??

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  2 роки тому +1

      I manually shift it, even though it's an automatic. There are four shift modes in this TCU but they're adaptive and somewhat unpredictable. Sometimes the shift points are lower than what I'd prefer, so controlling it manually is the way to go for consistency.
