- In this video, I share 10 Scottish words/sayings I learned in from the elderly people I support in work! I used natural lighting for this video and the sun kept popping in and out, so that's why the lighting is sometimes really bright!

SHOUTOUT TO ALL THE CORRIE-FISTERS!
My gran calls me this too! Corrie-joukit is another of her favourites!
Erin Me
Brilliant ones! I don't think I have? To mean what? The people in my work use "queerie" to mean a weird person or "queer" to mean odd though.
like me!
My Dad was born n raised in Glasgow area and was from the much older generation and used a lot of different words then you would. One he used ALL the time was bugger. Like the TV is all buggered up! Lol also I was called Cory handed as well as fister. 😊 he'd call my boys Jock but pronounced as joke!! Another was scunner, like oh that smell scunnered me! Sometimes I think different families use different words or terms. Raised here in the US I would use words he did and people would look at me like I grew antlers LOL
I could watch these Scottish words videos 24x7 if I didn't need to eat ! LOL. I LOVE THIESE !!!!
Please keep them coming. 🙏
Btw, I save these words and use them as well. Learning a lot here 😁👍
Cool video love it when you do Scott's the word videos cause it's so awesome to hear all the different words that you guys use it so awesome keep going I love to hear those kind of videos
Galluses, as a Dundonian means to me the suspenders you put over your shoulders to hold up your trousers. I’ve been exiled for many years but remember most of these words and they bring back happy memories. Thank you.
lol I texted some of this words to my former boss (he is from edinburgh), he laughed so much and asked how in hell i know of it! Thanks Erin!
Hahaha yas! Glad to help!
Erin I love your videos. Always very interesting
Thank you Josh!
Some cracking words. My parents met at a dance, back in the day!
luv this ❤
Thank you! 💙
It's really interesting how so many Scottish and Scandinavian words are alike. "Flittin'" sounds like "flytte" in Danish, which also means moving house :D
It's cool isn't it?! Love it!
Merete makes sense as Scots and English were heavily influenced by the Anglo-Saxon and Jute tribes that came over. They more heavily influenced the eastern side of the British Isles, but still a very cool connection (bit of a linguistics/history nerd I am).
My (Scottish) Dad used sark for shirt, which I believe comes from the Scandinavian serk.
I will never get bored of u and ur channel ! ❤️
Awwwww Niamh! 💙
Erin i am loving these videos about scottish words there is a few a didny know
Glad you're enjoying them!
Great video. keep it up. x Love your channel!!
Thank you! :)
always a good video
Thank you!
Good fun as usual!!
:)
I LOVED this video, I could tell you really enjoyed filming it, and I do a similar thing so I've also heard some strange phrases- they taught me a song about tea the other day! Our version of the dancin is 'the palais', about 90% of them met their hubbies there!
Awww thank you Lyd! Woaaah, that's interesting to know! I LOVE it
The best video
Sounds like it's never a dull day where you work! It must be fun to hear all of their stories and I love the idea of the dances back then...although, yeah, I agree, ...wouldn't want to have wait to get "picked" from the line up, lol. Love the "corrie in!" I'm from the US, but I still might just start using that one just for fun, haha. 😊
Never a dull day! Ever! Yeaaah it's a lot of fun. Haha coorie in is one of my faves! :D
Just heard the word flittin' in an episode of Still Game! Cool!
You are the first Scottish youtube iv saw and I love you
Awww thank you!!
I so enjoy your videos
Aww thank you Sharon!
Just found your channel! im from the states. Oklahoma to be exact! I have fallen in love with you and I could listen to you talk all day! keep em coming!! very much enjoy your videos!
Ohh thank you for subscribing! :)
Love your description of the Dancin', reminds me of one Republic music's video "all the right moves" :D Sounds so much more fun than clubbing!!
Agreed!
Great video, as always. Lots of words I hadn't heard before. Nowadays I've been going through The Blade Artist, one of the newest Irvine Welsh's novels about Franco Begbie, and read what seems to be an also kinda old scottish word, 'Jildy', meaning to rush or make haste. Ever heard and/or used that one before? Anyway, keep on postin' videos, ya beaut!
I haven't! Thanks for watching!
Nice work
I love your video's. My mum's auntie was in the The Steamie movie 😊 xx
Thank you! Aw nice one!
thanks for all these scottish word videos! My grandad is from Scotland and moved here to Australia when he was 18 but has kept up the scot words. All this time Ive had no idea what he's been talking about and he doesn't like to explain himself so your vids have helped a lot! If you ever want to compare scot words to Aussie words I'd be happy to help.
Glad you liked them! Hahaha awww glad he's still using them! Thanks for watching :)
Lots of words with I and n at the end of the words!!!! Cool
Yeah, most are probably supposed to have "ing" at the end but...aye :p
Loved this ! My mum and dad are 32 and they call it the dancin 😂 x
Yeah i use the majority of these on all the time 😊 i probibly grew up around too many old fogies lol
Hahaha maybe 😉
We always say flittin for moving houses in Ayrshire. Never heard of Lumber either haha. ' go put that ben the kitchen' is something my granny would always say aswell. She would also always say ' dae ye hink yer gallas' when I was chewing chewing gum lol. I still say ' aw am gawn oot tae the dancin' when I'm taking the piss. Love these videos! x
Love it! Thank you!
interesting video again Erin, as usual 😁
Thank you very much! :)
Very informative.
Thanks for watching :)
One corrie-fister here 😁 Briliant, once again 😎 Keep up the good work.
Yaaas! Thank you very much :)
Haha really enjoyed this. I know a few I'm from the north east of Scotland x
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it :)
A video with almost 6k views and 0 dislikes. That honestly has to be a record.
You look great Erin! Love your hair as well. 👌🏼
~Meredith
Awww thank you very much!! :D
The Steamie one of the best Scottish film/comedies ever made :)
Doric!!! Thanks for explaining that one! My parents are from Chapelhall, and moved to the US right before I was born, so their verbiage is much more modern. However I used to hear words like that all the time from my grandmother on visits, and although as a kid I was around Doric slang, I never knew that was what it was called. Thanks for that. :)
Awesome! Thanks for watching :)
LOT of respect for you and your job. My grandmother helped raise me until her dementia set in so that we couldn't leave her home alone. Thanks for making me laugh with the video.
Thank you! I enjoy it but can be difficult. Sorry to hear about your grandmother, it's a horrible thing!
i love ur videos ur so pretty
Awww thank you Hannah! 💙
in glasgow we still call it the dancin' lol xxxx love ur vids keep it up xxxx
Thank you Angela! :D
I'm from Caithness and we have our own "language" or dialect like Doric. We use the word 'ben' to say "through" like as in a direction I guess? E.g... "Come ben" as "come through/come here", or like I'll ask my granny where the fizzy juice is and she'll say "It's ben the hoose"! We also use Flittin' in Caithness as well :) We say Flittin' the nest!
Love these kinds of videos of yours, Erin! I'm always so intrigued to hear the different words that are used in different parts of Scotland!
Love it! And thanks for watching!
In regard to "the dancing", watch the video for the song Come Dancing by The Kinks if you get a chance. Kinda harkens back to those days.
Barrowland video by Runrig nails it.
no dislikes! amazing!
I use half of these all the time
Yaaas!
laughed so hard at lumber, "did you get lumber?" "did you get limber?" "did you shag?" gotta remember, the elderly are way more pervy than we like to think. I may not be scottish, but i love the language, and I've watched this vid so many times and laughed at how innocently Erin talked about it.
Really enjoyed the video. "Ben" in Elgin means through! More please!!
2:57 "Ben" -- I remember it, growing up, as "Ben here noo!". Come inside now. It was used as a directive.
Flittin' -- I always understood it as an inference that you were not only moving house, but that you were moving away from the community. The implications of flittin' came be more extreme than just moving house, as it may affect relationships.
Interesting Video. I haven't heard any of those words. I hear more words and phrases from England. Good to hear some Scottish words. My grandmother on my mom's side had Alzheimer and passed away in 2014. She didn't want to live in a home and wanted to say in her house. She got so bad off that she fell down and broke her hip. She had a nurse that came over but was gone for the day and was left there for over an hour on the floor. Well she never got better after that and passed away. You have a great job. Its an important job to care for older people. Too may time people like that get thrown away by society. You are an Awesome person :)
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! Oh man, poor woman :( ughhhh that's such a shame. They can be so vulnerable when staying on their own. Sorry to hear about that :(. Thank you, I do love my job!
:) Thanks for the reply your a sweet person :D
I had a dream the other night that I couldn't stop speaking in a Scottish accent because I had been watching so many videos on youtube about Scotland! Hehehe needless to say I enjoyed this video thoroughly :)
Hahaha thank you for watching! :)
Nice! did not recognize any of them lol another lesson learned pfft.
Haha well there ye go!
Hey Erin! another great Scots language vid! I really admire your line of work! My wife and I took care of my father and her father (really rough) through their late stage dementia. I cannot imagine doing it for a living. Shout out to you for doing good work.
I think "Ben" is a Dundonian word as I heard it used in another video. Doric is almost another language! I think when most Americans think of a Scottish accent they expect a Glaswegian one and seldom encounter others.
Even though my parents were British (mother from Perth, Dad from Lancs) I have come to appreciate the variety of American accents...well, as they were. It's sad that so many places are losing their regional dialects. I noticed that especially in Oklahoma (don't laugh). I was wondering if you have noticed the dissipation of local accents over there.
And oh yeah, sorry about our president. It's very temporary I hope :-/
I can't wait to go to Scotland! I'm looking forward to hearing all the accents but I hope I understand them! I've been watching Still Game to try to teach myself but I don't understand at least half of what's going on 😂😂
Aw man, you'll just need to binge my videos 😂
I will! You are so much easier to understand than Jack and Victor! 😂
Very funny and interesting! A fun fact for you: Flittin' I recognized at once was quite Scandinavian: In Danish "flytte" means to move house! :-)
As a fellow scot, you could pop in a great old word we use (dunno if you use it where you live) it's oaxter which is an armpit 😆 when we first met my husband had not a scooby ( idea) what I was talking about, he only lived 7 miles away from me. Its amazing even coloquiumisms change from town to town ( were in the sticks ( country) really enjoy you channel hen lol, always gives me a giggle ( BTW me n my man ( husband) are both healthcare workers too)
We still to "The dancin" here in the Philippines. And I thought you guys were old fashioned. lol! We don't have castles though, castles are awesome! hope to visit one day :)
Haha! Our castles are great!
Interesting job you have. It's a cliche, but elderly people have incredible wisdom from all the years of life's experiences. You're right, people grew up faster and dressed smarter in the Big Band/Dance club era. Their music is still popular today which speaks for itself. Nice vlog
It is! Agreed. Thanks for watching :)
Am from Scotland and I say Ben a lot 😂❤️
I have been in Canada for a number of years, originally from Glasgow.
And know all of the words or expressions she used .
You should ask your gran doogan about the steamie Erin she used to go when she lived in finneston
I will!
Amazing 😂
:D
"Wit the hells a gloamin" 😂😂 a love it
Hahaha could've just googled it back then 😂
It is great to hear these older terms. Some of them would definitely be given strange looks over here. Lumber, does have a different meaning over here, but it isn't a word we use often. And steamie is interesting, we have steamer, which is a slang term for going poo.
Haha a steamer here is someone who always gets drunk!
You are Gallus as the bars. Means brave/full of beans where I come from in Hamilton.
Nice!
Being a Corrie-fister myself, i am going to use that term with every left handed person i see from now on!!
Yaaaas!
Flittin' is a word I have not heard in years. We used to say midnight flit as they left in a hurry. Normally down to neighbours and drunken nights.
Love it!
I grew up with Steamy and flittin but they meant something different to my southern Grandma. Flittin meant moving about and Steamy meant like did you get hot and steamy on your date. Erin, I just got two small books of Scottish slang and a Scottish cook book from a gentleman who was flittin (moving house).
Haha interesting! Nice one!
That's so funny about a lumber I have a dementia client that says that all the time as well
the dancing as well every client I have goes on about that haha x
Awww I love hearing about it!
do a groing up scottish
Good idea!
Jack Myles yes
Loldolphin 56 got it from batchy
Batchy got it off u should dae another one
Im working on another one lol
So cool cause I hear some resemblance between scottish slang and swedish (or I guess nordic languages)
Like the word you said : flittin. In swedish "to move" is flytta.
Also bairn which is like children right? In swedish children is barn.
Kinda cool.
hi you are amazing
💙
i remember when i lived in West Lothian, was at my next door neighbours house hanging with my friend and i remember asking her gran where something was and she said "ben the other room" i was rather confused. i hadn't heard that term before, not sure if it's cus i'm from the west coast 😅
Hahaha love it!
Skoosh, I still love this word used it for many things like skoosh over a bit "move over a little or like a scooshy bottle basically years back would have been the cheapest water pistol you could find.
Yesss love it!
Bless you for working with those with Dementia! My father had Alzheimer's for the last five years of his life.
It's a horrible thing!
Of all the words you mentioned, I already knew gloamin'. It is in the song The Heather on the Hill from Brigadoon.
♫♪"The mist of May is in the gloamin', and all the clouds are holdin' still
So take my hand and let's go roamin' through the heather on the hill." ♪♫
I love your vocabulary videos. Oh, who am I kidding? I love ALL your videos.
You're so awesome.
Oooo interesting! Awww thank you very much! Always love your comments
You're welcome. ☺
Hey Erin I was wondering when you say the alphabet do you say Jay or Jai ( as in you rhyme it with I ) I personally say Jay because I was born and raised in England and then I moved to Scotland it's a weird question but I thought I'd ask it anyway x ❤️
Oh god! I just spent ages saying both over and over 😂 I think I say jai! Maybe both :S. Jai I think...hahaha
"Do a moonlight flit" Vacate the premises in the middle of the night ,mainly due to rent arrears!
Interesting video! )) tfs
Thank you! :D
What to see in a major city in Scotland!
I definitely need to do this!
Hi Erin . Which camera do u use for vlogs . Which camera would u recommend for a beginner vloger
Go to the dancing get a lumber { In your case you would be walked home/bus stop/taxi rank ,possibly kiss goodnight maybe arrange a date if desired} then go to work/school next day and tell everybody about it! In my case just brag about it like Travolta in " GREASE" !
I work with a lot of Italians who have trouble understanding Glasgow and West coast accents so I throw in a long of slang just to annoy them further. I'm ex RAF so also have loads of military slang too. BTW because we are corrie fisted, apprently mean we use the opposite side of the brain more than right handers which makes us more creative and smarter....we know that anyway of course.
Haha! Of course!
I think a video about Scottish songs or artists you remember/like would be nice..Also I was wondering if the word lassie is used in your area.. because I think you said in another video that hen was the slang word used for girls?
Yep, lassie is sometimes used here. I definitely want to do a Scottish music video!
Hello, just a quick question, where did you get the necklace your wearing in this vid? Thanks
mike1985000 Etsy!
I know coorie in, the dancin and that's about it
There ye go! Few extra words for you 😉
I think i saw u vlogging on a boosted board on Glasgow rd
😂
Lumber - A stage in the process of wood production.
Ha! Yep.
Damn, I mean I'm from nearer the highlands but there are a few in there that I don't know. Btw don't feel bad about not being able to say vocabulary, I can't say it either :( Love yer vids keep up the gid work :D
Hahaha I usually can but no idea what happened there! Thank you very much! :)
Btw, where about you from in Scotland?
Erin Diny judge me. English wasney my first language lol.
West Dunbartonshire!
The dancin {the town hall}
Love being Scottish lol 😂
:D
What about "ginger" as in (fizzy juice/soft drinks) or messages as in (going shopping) something my mum and granny used to say
I didn't learn them from work (plus ginger isn't really said around my bit) but they're both in some other slang vids :)
Erin Erin yeah it was something of an older generational thing I guess, I'll need to check those out! 😊
I use all of these words 😁
( I'm from the west )
:D
I'm 18 and knew all of these haha!! Must be around too many elders 😂😂
another great vid lass; knew abou' "gloamin'" an' "flittin'", bu'th'others? well call me well schooled now😉 can't wait ta use'em in convo next I'm o'er th'Pond (& ta see which o'me Glasgae mates understand wha' I'm sayin'!😂) 👏👍✌🙌
Glad you liked it! :)
Flittin is a still game episode
Another great vid! Not sure if you've done this BUT...How about if you're from another country (say America for instance) what's custom for dating a Scottish person?? Do's and Dont's. Haha
Thank you! See, I'm not sure I'd be able to do a proper video like that because we're all different! I have different dos and don'ts to my pals and them to others. So I can't speak for everyone! We're just normal people :P
That's a good point! Haha I'm sure there are differences culturally for sure! But that's also part of the fun! Learning about each other and where we came from :)
My granny uses these words all the time lol.... #proudofmyheritage
Yaaas granny!
I grew up with flittin.
You talk one load of Keech Erin. Only kidding pal great vid. Cheers
Thanks for watching!
You did that it school In Motherwell
