- In this video we're going to be discussing the difference between logia and paramecia devil fruits.
Some paramecia devil fruits are VERY similar to logia devil fruits, yet are still considered paramecia instead of logia..?
We're going to breakdown and explain exactly why that is.
For instance, why isn't Magellan's Doku Doku no mi a logia?
Why isn't Blackbeard's Yami Yami no mi a paramecia?
These questions and many more will be answered!
I made this video specifically to help educate those of you who aren't sure of the difference, or maybe just need a couple questions answered regarding the classifications.
Hopefully you can learn something new or walk out with a better understanding of what properties truly classify a devil fruit as paramecia or logia.

Blackbeard can become pure darkness, in the manga he describes it as being a black hole or infinite gravity. Do to this unique nature he cannot be intangible because he takes everything in, which includes physical attacks.
You are correct, I more or less meant that he can't straight up transform into his force of nature (from what we've seen at least) to become intangible like all the rest, suppose I should've worded that one differently!
2Spooky The reason why he can't become intangible like other logias could be because he is constantly bombarded with his weakness-light.Imagine if you put Kizaru in a room with no light-he would be able to use his powers like lasers and shit,but he wouldn't be intangible.Or if you put Enel into a room made out of rubber-he coull send electrical shocks at you,but he wouldn't be intangible.Same for Blackbeard,if there is light all around him,he is never able to be a true logia.Maybe that is the reason why he clocked himself in the scene of him stealing WB's fruit,in order to become a "true logia".

2Spooky No you worded it fine, I get what you meant. Many have been saying another reason he cant be intangible is do to light being his weakness. That's def possible although Oda is pretty good at exploring full potentials in these elemental powers, so maybe you could toy with this theory... Blackbeard declares himself to be a void or a blackhole-man. This can lead me to think he has become anti-matter or an absence of space. If he is anti-matter it would be logical to assume his weakness would be matter, or in other words "everything." This could explain 1. why he can't be intangible and 2. why he can take in an additional devil fruit power (if he is a void there is room for another). Thoughts?

Blackbeard can't become intangible because his fruits power causes him to absorb all damage, therefore he can not come apart as darkness itself, essentially one of his fruits powers causes him to always be present, so he can always be hit. It is a side effect of the gravity effect of his power, gravity draws everything in so blackbeard drawn in attacks and damge and can't avoid them.
Therefore you can not compare the Logia Darkness fruit to a standard for other logia, because it has a "Unique" Side effect, Logia by deffinition make users intangible, but this logias side effect cancels that out.

I have a question. How can he take damage if he is effectively a black hole? Gravity doesn’t take damage.
it's not that he's a literal black hole. You should look at it more as a metaphor of what a black hole represents.
Eg. a black hole "absorbs" everything in its path, even light. It pulls everything into it's core. In a similar way, Blackbeard's devil fruit makes him pull other devil fruit users towards him, nullifying their abilities (because he represents darkness) while at the same time, having to absorb all damage due to his black hole like properties that pull everything to it's core, including damage.
That is a good point, but another way of looking at it which could also make sense is that since blackbeard is darkness his natural enemy would be the light around him. Like how Luffy was able to hit Crocodile because he was wet or how Luffy could hit Enel cause he is made of rubber. Which is why when he took Whitebeards Devil fruit he needed that blanket to hide them from the light so he could transform into darkness.
The only point is...how he could handle 2 fruits...that's the only good question....
It is so much easier explaining the darkness fruit. You said a logia user can only be hit by its weakness, water to fire for example. Don't you think light is the weakness of darkness. And since there is light everywhere. He cannot turn into darkness. EXCEPT if he, let's say DARKENS HIS SURROUNDINGS like he did with whitebeard? Sound logical right?

Kizaru would probably win against Blackbeards darkness fruit because light repress darkness. But Kizaru would lose against a Black Hole fruit because Black Holes have the gravity to even suck in light itself. Second thought if we look that Blackbeard was able to pull people near to him it would make sense that he not only owns a Darkness Fruit but a anti-matter fruit because darkness isn´t an element.
The dark fruit has already demonstrated blackhole like properties combined with the ability to nullify devil fruit abilities through contact. I'm not so sure it's a slam dunk for Kizaru at all.
As for darkness not being an element, it depends in what capicity you're talking about, scientifically none of the logias are elements but once you have lava, light and fire as elements you really don't have an argument against darkness being one.
We can take this theory of Light Pokémon and dark Pokémon. It is matter of who strike first, then have high probability to win.

I think the Dark Dark fruit actually does grant intangibility, just in a very unexpected way. Darkness isn't about shadows in a symbolic sense, but an actual scientific physics sense. Light is actually just molecules moving at VERY VERY fast speeds, and theoretically, if one could vibrate the atoms that make up their body fast enough, they too would create a body of intangible light. Remember, all solid material is just atoms vibrating at speeds comparable to the atoms of human bodies. Speed something up and it becomes light and then eventually 'disappears'. The Dark Dark fruit, being darkness, makes atoms and molecules slow down to nothing, creating a gravitational effect- a black hole does the same thing. It slows atoms down to nothing, compressing them into such density that they no longer can hold any form. So the Dark Dark fruit isnt so much a matter of not being intangible, but rather becoming the element of 'darkness' itself, which is dense, compressed, and unmoving. It's the one element that would naturally act against the idea of free movement. one could even argue that the element of darkness is actually just the lack or void of 'element' itself. yeah light is not molecules moving very very fast. nor is it atoms or protons or neutrons or electrons. light is comprised of photons.
and you got the gravity and darkness backwards. a strong gravitational pull, of a black hole, can force atoms to slow down or stop vibrating/moving but not the other way around.
again a black hole doesnt have it effect on atoms individually, it just has such a strong gravitational pull that atoms in it get compressed to make its incredible density.
darkness isnt dense compressed and unmoving, thats just a blackhole. and its speculated that on the surface of a black hole there would be an incredible amount of light, even more than on a sun, because light cant escape from a black hole. so having a black hole as the spokes person for darkness makes sense on the outside, but not from all angles.

no, a photon can only even be considered a particle by the logic that it has a specific size,
think of it this way if you look at this symbol ~ its practically a perfect 2d representation of a photon,
think of light as a ray, a single ray, that moves up and down while still moving forward making almost the shape of a wave, higher energy light (blue to violet and ultra violet side of the spectrum) moves back and forth faster and lower energy light (orange to red to infrared side of the spectrum) moves back and forth slower,
now im gonna have to explain a little bit why this is so you can understand
ill try and make it quick and simple, the easiest way to understand why light rays move like this is because theres a speed limit to the universe, that is, a maximum possible speed something can move through spacetime,
since light has zero mass as long as it has literally any energy it will move at infinite speed, but since theres a speed limit it only moves at 300 million meters per second,
alright now if theres a speed limit to the universe, that is, a maximum possible distance something can travel through space in a certain amount of time, then unless something changed when you added more energy to light, light would technically just instantly obliterate any energy it absorbed,
but something does change, because light moves up and down (good place to input that again, this is just a basic explanation relying on a 2D visualization, in the real world light doesnt LITERALLY move up and down along its path)
since light does move up and down we can see that if light has lets say an energy level of 1, then itll go both up and down to reach the same spot after 1 second, now if we increase that energy level to 2, a normal object would just reach the same place twice as fast, but since light already moves at the speed limit of the universe, its kinda gotta cheat,
now that it has twice the energy level, it moves forward at exactly the same speed because its already at the maximum speed, but now it moves up and down twice as fast as well, so now its moved up and down twice and reached the same point in this motion twice (keeping in mind since it never got reflected neither of these points were in the same literal space but rather the same stage of the up-and-down motion)
now that you can picture light a little bit better, when the wavelength reaches a spot where it was before, we call the part of the ray of light between the to idnetical points (again not literally identical theyre just in the same stage of the up and down) a photon
so photons and regular particles have very few similarities, thats why increasing the energy level of a regulare particle could indeed, make it seem as if it was releasing light, and might give the idea that if you do this to an extremely large degree it might turn the pbject into light,
the real interaction taking place doesnt involve the creation of new light, but simply because the light that bounces of the object gains energy from it

uhhhh, i mean, kind of? there are 2 ways i can see this,
1: you mean that every object is just vibrating at a specific speed because of heat, but this doesnt make sense because if thats what you meant it means you think heating up objects makes them turn into light and as i explained earlier thats just not true
2: youre talking about string theory, which, even thought a highly doubt you are, string theories interpretation of the vibrating strings, while does allow the changing of these vibration frequencies to result in the changing of the substances inherent properties, it doesnt allow these properties or vibrations to be affected that deeply within the interaction between different "strings"

i think this is the last part of your message that i can actually provide new information to you by disproving so:
firstly, i want you to picture gravity differently, imagine it so that as the universe stands, two massive objects will accelerate towards eachother at a specific speed, as they get closer to eachother the speed of acceleration increases,
now instead of thinking of this as acceleration or speed or any sort of force, i want you to think of it like this,
due to the curvature of space and time, the entire universe is moving slowly towards the exact pinpoint center of that object's total mass,
and the speed at which space and time move toward the center of the object is increase by the total mass of the object,
so, with this way of picturing gravity, you can understand that theres truly no such thing as a "gravitational effect"
when an object (lets say you or me) is "moving" towards the center of another object ( lets say the earth) its actually not moving, but rather it is remaining in the exact same plase in space, but space itself is getting closer to the center of the object as time moves along (so basically, when you stand up, you arent fighting against a force of gravity, but rather you are actively moving directly away from the center of the earth, as everything else in the universe slowly moves towards the center of the earth)
now to explain a black hole simply (key word *simply* this is by no means an acurate depiction)
now if you imagine what i just explained on an extremely small level (like on a quark to quark basis) , and then try to vaguely imagine all of these small parts in affect on a larger scale (like all the quarks in a black hole)
you can see that everything in the universe is actually slowly moving towards each quark,
but it just so happens, that no matter the shape a the structure, the movements of spacetime will always cancel out to make it so that space will move exactly toward the center of the object,
now you have to understand that while yes, each of these quarks is also moving to the exact center of the black hole, since each object in the system is also contributing to where the center is, the centerpoint itself is actually constantly shifting,
this is, in normal massive objects, in black holes, the movement that each particle make is so neglagible to the center point, that eventually, some of them are going to reach the exact center point ( key word *some*) and begin to "perfectly align" which will eventually make it so that these objects are so close together, that even if you look at it at the smallest level possible, you wont be able to distinguish them (aka each of them is less then 1 planck length apart, the planck length being the smallest possible distance being allowed in our universe, as well is the planck second being the smallest possible time frame allowed in our universe, you can view it as, a planck length is a pixel, and a planck second is a frame, if you look at our universe this way, you can say that a black hole, just has multiple particles inside the exact center pixel)
and due to this condensation that defies the regular laws of reality, a small area is created in which the spacetime of the universe bends so strongly toward this object that you would have to defy the laws of physics to move away from the center of the object while you are in this area
(this area being the event horizon of a black hole)
when a black hole is being formed, initially this area doesnt even exceed the size of the object itself, but since the amount of mass being condensed into this "infinitely small" point keeps increasing, or alternatively, the size of this "infinitely condensed" mass blob increases, the size of the event horizon will continue to expand
you can see in this depiction of a black hole that no where in the process is energy removed or destroyed, its just that as the mass of an object increases, the energy contained within it is less and less able to resist the movement of space itself

Jonnnyfukyea Nope, they just contain canon material, but aren’t canon themselves. Like Shiki exists in One Piece canon, but he didn’t have the run in with the straw hats the movie produced. Zephyr isn’t canon period though, FYI guy above me, Z wasn’t written by Oda. Only Gold and Strong World contain canon elements. Though I wish it were opposite as I dislike Shiki, but like Zed. Also that candy power was so underused. Totally a cheap way to have a logia be fought pre-Haki.

I do have to point out, poison DOES occur in nature, extremely often at that. The reason Mejelon fruit is actually considered a Paramecia and not logia is because he does NOT naturally produce his poison on his own. Early on in that arc, when we first hear of him, it is stating in a passing comment that he eats poisons, and has....bathroom poisons because of it. Therefore, we can speculate that in order for his fruit to work, he needs to consume a sample, or maybe even stockpile poison in his body. On the other hand, the Yami Yami no me is explained to also cover Gravity as well as darkness. Blackbeard stated that the gravity aspect is why he can't disperse into darkness, however is DOES suck up damage so it isn't lasting, in exchange of it being more Painful. And as a little bonus, the wax wax fruit is Paramecia because Wax doesn't happen naturally, it's always created by something, whether it's humans or bees.
Poison is created by living beings (mushrooms insects and plants) therefore it is not made by nature itself.

Great breakdown of devil fruits but unfortunately I didn’t learn anything new.
Katikuri can only re-shape his body with mochi. He can't pass through attacks. He uses his observation haki to see where his enemy is going to attack and then he shapes his body to make it look like it passes through him. It's like what Kuzan did against Whitebeard.

Logia's seem to be able to exist as a phenomenon as well
For example Aokiji's logia is the "cold cold fruit" rather than the "ice ice (baby) fruit"
So yeh its also something because in the T/N of katakuri's introduction mochi could also refer to stickyness so it could have been oda's original intention for have him be a logia

That is important to note. A lot of people forget that Aokiji's power isn't ice, but that the ice comes from the water moisture in the air when he drops the area around him below freezing.
Just stop this shit, his fruit is the ice fruit, he does not become cold, he becomes Ice and create ice, not freeze the air.

hey 2spooky, the yami yami no mi IS intangible. Its just that light is its natural weakness and we have only seen the user in light of some source, hence why they have been tangible

Wrong...they even explain it multiple times. The “element” of darkness absorbs everything, since he IS darkness, he must absorb all attacks to himself (though he seems to heal pretty damn quick from them too).

You can touch a logia if you use their weakness. For example crocodile and water.
When crocodile was covered in water during the war by Luffy (crocodile tried killing whitebeard as soon as he arrived), crocodile didn't lose his power but lost his power to turn into sand and was touchable. Now then.
What is the weakness of darkness? Light. Light is everywhere. We see because of light. Because light is everywhere blackbeard is always covered by his weakness. Even at night there is some light like the moon reflecting the sun's rays. So because he is always covered by his weakness. He will be in the same state as crocodile when covered by his weakness. Unable to turn into your element and unable to be untouchable.
Magellan only produced poison. And covered his body in it so his foes would be afraid to even touch him. That's why Luffy can hit him if he coats his limbs in armor. Because his skin isn't making contact with the poison.
Now as for katakuri.
Hmmm, I need more info on him. He was supposed to be a logia at first but then oda changed it officially.

Well "cold" is more of an absence of heat, so to turn into cold Aokiji turns his body into something that pretty much everybody agrees is cold: ice.

Rex Redfield ... his ability is, in fact, to control cold.. he turns his body into cold, thus freezing the water vapor in the air to make ice. Ace, for example, could not produce heat without using fire, as he had the flare flare fruit.. Aokiji, on the other hand, *can* make things cold without ice.
Jason Ortiz that is no negative body temperature manipulation. He just has the ability to lower the temperature in all things to an insane point.
Yet he shouldn't be able to walk or talk or move at all or even regenerate himself from ice since he does not control ice. If his power was indeed what you described he would create ice by lowering the temperature to a certain point. But Aokiji seems TO BE ICE HIMSELF. At Marineford, he's crushed by Whirebeard and then just recomposes himself from mere ice.
actually, katakuri IS intangible, just like a logia. the only reason he couldn't be against luffy and had to dodge his attacks by morphing, is because luffy can use haki.

I like the idea of a paramecia awakening being similar to the special paramecia powers. considering zoans can awaken and so can paramecias, there's no reason why it cant be that his mochi ability couldn'tve awakened into a special paramecia.
now I do wonder what kind of insane abilities logia can do. I shudder to imagine their capabilities.
This is why in terms of power creation, I prefer togashi's nen. It really isn't restricted to the randomness of the fruit that you eat but instead, (to make it simple) your personality and intellect and ability of controlling nen. Oda practically dug himself a hole when there are restrictions on devil fruit users. (Can't swim etc) I really do wish the full explanation of the origins of devil fruits will be sufficient to answers all our queries.

Though I already know the difference between Logia and paramecia, I do have a better understanding of paramecia in point taking luffy's power for example, paramecia is the ability to manipulate, alter, control (or some cases produce like the poison-poison fruit) different types of matter either on the body or the environment, which would explain the mochi-mochi fruit. And then awakened peramecia powers then pushes those abilities further into what they can alter around them, do that would mean that black beard's power are logia (due to it's special nature), he cannot alter, control or manipulate shadows or darkness in or around him, even though he cannot become darkness as 2spooky said it would mean to become nothing, also as 2spooky said water logia can hit fire logia, so since there's light everywhere in the world and at the War Of The Best, Black Beard was fighting in broad day light, so that probably means that natrual light alone (and I'm guessing here) no matter what kind would stop the dark-dark fruit from causing it's consumer to become darkness

Blackbeard can become Darkness though, but it actually just draws everything in and makes attacks do more damage instead of letting things pass through him.

Its because of the light that weakens him for example like said in the video its natural weakness can hurt it so it would make sense and thats also a reason why they put a blanket over whitebeard so blackbeard can use his fruit like a logia (i hope it makes sense)

Something that further made the Doku Doku no mi look like a Logia was a scene Magellan was getting shot at and the bullets simply went inside of him as if he was just a mass of goo, when in reality I think the bullets were just being dissolved in his acid coating of venon. As for Jozu, be in mind we BARELY saw anything of him, so we can't tell he is Paramecia or Logia becuase we never got a full extension of his powers yet, so maybe he will show the required abilities of either Logia or Paramecia. And just becuase he is a solid element, doesn't mean he has to be "intangible" to be a Logia, because Aokiji becomes ice, which is solid, and he simply shatters and reforms back, so any Logia that becomes solid elements pretty much shatter upon impact and just reshape back together.
It always seemed logical that if BBeard is immune to akuma no mi abilities, he can't be immune to normal attacks. Although some of these fruits are truly OP, they always seem to have some sort of balance in this regard. If a person gains some ability it always comes at a price.
The main thing that I think that distinguishes special paramecia and logias is that special paramecia users are now that element forever, but logia’s can switch between their said element and to their normal state

3:30 just to make a correction on your logic but in specific cercumstances logia users can be hit by conventional attacks. the thing about a logia is that they have two forms like how a zoan usually has three. logias have their flesh and blood form and their intangible form. how a logia is seen as invincible is that professionals like ace crocodile and smoker can convert their bodies on reflex in order to avoid attacks coming to them. those who are not as professional like sabo and tashgi (during the small time that she was in smokers body) have to actively focus on the parts of their bodies that they want to convert into their intangible forms.
bottom line if you catch a logia user off guard (like when luffy hit smoker and ace from behind in alabasta) the logia user would never have the time and awareness to convert his or her body.
this is why armament haki is so useful as it can bypass that intangibility so when a logia user meets up with a haki user they have to be weary on when they convert their bodies as seen with smoker vs vergo where all smoker did was make himself a larger target by spreading his smoke body (albeit though smoker only did that to retrieve law's heart)
blackbeard stated that he can't turn into darkness, because darkness sucks everything in that's why it's special in that case. Me makinga guess if the yami yami turns the person into darkness themself they'd turn into a wormhole or something

You forgot about how the swamp swamp fruit allows the user to transform into its element. But still has to absorb attacks like the dark dark fruit.
I think a special paramecia is when you become the devil fruit. Luffy is rubber but can't produce rubber(right now) and their not intangible

Which in case of Katakuri, logia intagibility, he can't control mochi at first but because of awakening He can turn things in to mochi.

I'm pretty sure that they state somehwere around the Skypiea arc that all Logia users have to transform their bodies into the element at will in order to avoid attacks. They are not actually intangible. I'm not about to confirm that though.

Newcomer, never seen a video on this channel before. This video was really well made. Just dropping an opinion for discussion. I think that, rather than forces of nature, logias are more like reactions in chemistry. For example freezing water makes ice, straw and flint with sparks yield fire, smoke, etc.
I think devil fruit is logia when user can't cover their element with haki. Like aokiji's ice, kizaru's light, etc. can't be covered in haki and they'd have to use their human form to use armament haki. Whereas katakuri despite being intangible can cover his element with haki, so its a special paramecia.
I have 2 questions for 2spooky. The first question if a logia is always an element where the user can not only become the element but can also produce that element outside of their body, so my first question would be if diamond jozu is considered a paramecia because he cant produce diamonds outside of his body, what if this devilfruit was awakened? Let's say the ship is under heavy fire and jozu manages to use his ability to cover the ship in diamonds to protect it from further damage, because it's considered a natural element and awakened would it be a logia or a special paramecia? My second question is if marco the Phoenix learned how to awaken his power, could it have been possible for him to have healed the entire fleet at once after the payback war with blackbeard?
