Part 1: • OJ da Juiceman: I Star...
--------
In this clip, OJ da Juiceman opened up to Shawn Prez about his label woes and how he was in such a bad contractual situation leading to him having no rights or claim to ownership for his biggest record, “Make Tha Trap Say Aye.” OJ also detailed signing the deal which had terrible conditions for him as the artist. He recalled the label taking 50% of his show money and kept the proceeds from his debut album. While the label undoubtedly jerked him, OJ da Juiceman didn’t make it difficult for them to do so by pulling up to sign the contract without a lawyer.

The moment you come with a lawyer that’s when the deal comes off the table.
Better off the table then a slave. Always negotiate another deal along as you have talent. Still have to have some business savvy. Lawyers are crooks too

@@MarkoD404 Shawn being someone who has been at the label, just couldn't understand how badly Mizay took advantage of OJ.
@@MarkoD404 Again he being on the Major label side, didn't understand how Mizay could get away with that. When mention he doesn't understand how does that add up to 50%, he really doesn't comprehend that. Because at the majors there on min/max rates and still that doesn't equate to 50%.
Damn Juice! I wonder if he can rerecord the that album, just like Taylor Swift and Ashanti is doing now.
These stories of ppl getting got by record labels are endless
Slim, Shawn knows the answer to the majority of the stuff he has been asking OJ because even I know the answer and I am not even apart of this industry LOL!! I know Shawn is just doing his job and trying to be respectful, but at times, this interview has felt like they were "Twistin the Knife" deeper than what his record label (or whatever entity he was signed to at that time) has already done to OJ. Juice is a complete street guy to the core that was actually a successful street guy to the core. Street guys like OJ are not really wired to plan for the future or to make intelligent business moves outside of street business moves. They don't have anyone to lean on and get them moving on the correct path forward. Someone has to step in and advise them on how to navigate otherwise they wouldn't know what to do just like most people wouldn't know what to do. This type of shit is what record labels and management/publishing/production companies have been doing since the beginning of the music industry. Yes, we all know OJ should have had a lawyer but he's not even gonna think that far into it back then or at that point in the timeline. Then the label started coming at him with critical decisions when he was in the middle of a personal health crisis!! That's the most DESPICABLE part to me.
I felt the same way but not to redirect this most people up north look at us down south as the dumbest people to ever live and he sounds like hes from New York. In a way it sounds like he's asking these questions to low key make fun of OJ and to make him look like he the dumbest artist ever. Yea it might seem like he's being respectful but deep down he's not, I don't like how he ask questions anyway every interview I click on from vlad and I hear his voice I just pass because you can hear the bias in his voice of the people he likes and idolize as an artist and the people he don't Vlad need to find someone else to work and do interviews for him he's horrible and disrespectful.
I don't think the interviewer was disrespectful but just playing devil's advocate. These questions were asked in hindsight. Yes OJ was burned financially but it appears that he has learned his lesson. Your WORD or HANDSHAKE is no longer a BOND in transactions anymore.
@@TwitterVerifier I thought I was the only one who would skip it as soon as I heard his voice and and not Vlads lol

- No bro, I heard everything he said in the video. He made a poor choice and got to deal with it. That’s why I am having a lawyer when I sign a contract.
@@QuanBrown27 Bro do you know how much a good lawyer cost? This is very common a lot of these artist don’t have the funds to get a lawyer so they just take for word what the label lawyers tells them. Like I said he was dealing with financial circumstances n had to do what he had to do. It sounds easy to say he should’ve got a lawyer lol a lawyer to read over tons of paper work isn’t cheap

Interviewer brought up a good question about having a lawyer when signing contracts. Also reading it along with them and asking the right questions. So a artist won't get taken advantage of. Saves years of regret. Unfortunately they came at him at a time to sign when he was at a desperate time. Like how they did Pac when signed to Death Row when he was down and in jail.
He talkin about waka flock mother i think
Lesson learned street rules honor and loyalty don’t translate to a lot of things the structure may be similar but not the values that are respected and gone by in the streets

Happens to many artists. Contracts not right and the artist still dives head first into the game. Juiceman was too in a rush to get in the game. They looked at juiceman as a come up. He got homeboyed. You can learn alot about contracts just by listening to artists who have gone through what juice went through, what to agree on and what not to agree on.
This is 1 reason why artists are going independent have been going independent now because of these reasons record labels record label owners don't want that.
Damn that make me mad that a record label would take advantage of an artist like that, I’d still try to sue if it were me but I’m sure OJ has looked in to that possibility. I feel you you Juice.
No one took advantage of him. It was his own undoing. Who signs contracts without reading them? Who also signs without an attorney? The label (Mizzay Ent.) did exactly what they were supposed to do. He didn't do what he was supposed to do.
@ThaBlackKat I agree, but duress is duress. Juice should’ve never been approached in a hospital about a recording contract. The label should have had the decency to wait after he got out of hospital and had a clear head and vision on what the future would hold for both parties.
They been jerking artist since it was first started. I guess it's just standard to fuck over artist. Shit is crazy
@@EricRabb can you really call it duress when all they did was offer a better alternative than being in the streets? It's not like he signed a contract while in the hospital. I'm sure Deb tried to do right and get him away from the street life since he was talented doing work as an entertainer. It's not like he was an undeveloped adolescent. He was a grown man and he is responsible for anything he signs his name on. Whether it be a bank loan, insurance, medical bills/procedures, etc. It's his duty to read the paperwork or hire someone who can read and translate what he doesn't understand. At some point artists need to take responsibility for all of their actions and stop blaming others. OJ only began to take responsibility AFTER Shawn Prez put him on blast for not making sense about his advance and such.
@@NomadicXXL it's also standard for artists to know what they're signing before doing so and being sure about their decisions but most don't care about it when all they're chasing are bright lights and stardom. The labels do what they're supposed to do and look out for themselves only. It's a business not a friendship. Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.
