A clever chord progression is one that sets up a listener’s expectation, and then breaks that expectation in an interesting way. One song that does this well is ‘Pyramid Song’ by Radiohead.
This song is clever because it is both complex and not that complex. On the one hand it uses a really interesting and complex rhythm and chord progression. But on the other hand, it's just another rock song in 4/4 time and in the key of B minor.
3:33 "with a drum loop everything falls into place"
...like a jigsaw
I see what you did there... 😎
When everything falls into place like a jig saw it's like if everything's in its right place
borrowing from harmonic and melodic minor is something im gonna start doing now, thank you so much
Man, this is so useful even for music composition. Thank you!
This is a criminally underviewed video, glad it got recommended to me
Very interesting. Thank you.
The published sheet music just has it in A with a bunch of G naturals thrown in... Which, (if you really wanted to get technical) would imply a combination of B Dorian & F# phrygian no?
Solid video!
But have Radiohead been a rock band since Ok Computer?
my favorite music education channel made a video on my favorite song
Thanks for the video. However, I would disagree with your conclusion that this song is "kind of" in Bm. What you say is the same as saying that every C major song is "kind of" A minor song. You did a great work in pointing out that there is a F# pedal point. Actually whole song gravitates around F# which means it is the tonic. Based on the table of chords [10:07] I would say that this song is in F# Phrygian with two chords borrowed from F# Mixolydian b6. Which is actually called modal interchange. WDYT?
Have to agree with this one.
ua-cam.com/video/CEi9ecBRR_4/v-deo.html Radiohead/Thom love modal interchange.
I didn't get that as his conclusion.. From around 8:40 until the end he says very similar things as what you did here. Or do you specifically mean that last sentence "it's just another rock song in the key of B minor.. kind of". I took that as a bit of a joke to be honest, it wouldn't make much sense if that was meant seriously, given what was said in the last few minutes of the video.
Excellent, fun and crystal clear analysis ; thanks!
Phrygian and Phrygian dominant mode ... oriental vibe ... Slightly depressing lyrics about former lovers ... Wait ... WAIT ! ... This clever B min pop song is in reality ... A FLAMENCO !
Mesmerizing song nonetheless ...
I didn't get why in f# phrygian the tonic is f#. It must be f#m in this case.
I think that this is bm harmonic and this harmony move built on phrygische Wendung which here (in Bm harmonic) is A, G, F#.
He's talking about the tonic note, not a tonic chord.
If you go through to work of Mr. Yorke, you will see this is something he does quite often. The tonic chord is from a completely different mode to the rest of the chords used.
Crotchets?
Great!
Please, does someone have this sheet music?
Very fun and enlightening, thank you!
Excelente vídeo...!!!
Great analysis! I still hate the song but now I understand it :) Thanks, this channel is a goldmine.
