It was a pleasure! Thanks for the entertainment! Maybe we can set aside a day to talk about some of your arrangements and recordings, I’d love to know more about pieces like this!

In terms of chest voice's and bass classification in the bass gang the closest to a high bass is Peter, he is a Bass-Baritone in opera so his lowest chest is usually a B1 or a Bb1, followed by Tomi who has a G#1. Than Marwan with a G1, and finally Bobby with an F#1. This is all based off recorded notes in their music those, chest voice can be higher or lower on any given day. I think Peter recorded himself sick one time and hit a chest G#1 or something. Its interesting that Marwan, being the youngest in the group at 18, and having one of the lighter voices (his highs are very light if you pair them up with any of the other members, Bobby's hasn't gone super high but his voice is super full and bassy even in the upper octaves, Tomi is a wizard of the high stuff and can control his falsetto and mixed voice with precision, going from full belts into a siren song kind of sound, and peter is a mf opera singer so his highs are very full.) I expected Marwan to be more of a high bass but his low chest is just so clear, giving bobby a run for his money. Dude will probably be the lowest out of the 4 with age since your voice continues to deepen through your twenties. As a low baritone now I only have clear full chest down to D2 but I can push it lower, Hopefully I will at least have a solid B1 as I age.

Marwan hit a B0 in their cover of Emperor's New clothes
Geoff Castelucci did this in Voiceplay's Halo theme cover

    So bassline at 10:03 is
    Bar 1: G#1-F#1-E1-Eb1- Bobby-Probably
    Technique: 1st Subharmonics no Chest
    Bar 2: G#1-F#1-C#2-C2-G#1-Bobby Probably
    Technique: 1st Subharmonics no Chest
    Bar 3: G#1-F#1-E1-Eb1-Tomi Probably
    Technique: Subharmonics or Inhale*
    Bar 4: C#1-Eb1-E1
    Technique: Subharmonics or Inhale*
*The more likely technique is subharmonics as i hear no intake of breath at start and the vowels match more to subs, it is also more clean and typically you will be able to hear peoples accents in basslines or just music lines and usually the voice sounds different when inhale is being used but knowing tomi (not personally just a saying) he could be using inhale and again there is a lot of things pointing to him using inhale as most vocal range videos point the end of his subharmonic range on the E1 in Copycat so if it is subs than most vocal range videos are wrong.

Really appreciate your breakdown. My gosh, I hardly picked up a darn thing unitl you pointed it out. I was missing alot. Also appreciate your comparisons between versions while staying critical / complimentary about both. I stumbled upon Geoff, which led to Peter, which led to the Bass Gang, which led to you. Wonderful journey!

One of my favorite things about Marwan’s arrangements is that he really showcases his singers’ strengths. We get to hear Peter’s opera, Bobby’s gorgeous Thurl Ravenscrofty basso, Tomi can have this lovely elastic quality to his voice, so it’s perfect for the bit where they “melt,” plus you pretty much HAVE to take advantage of his whistle notes. And Lauren is all over her range, too, which is cool. It also seems like they all get to take a shot at the lowest notes in all their songs. (Marwan’s solo sub is also a C#1, I’m pretty sure.)
    Great reaction!!

Marwan is truly a mastermind, and he isn’t even 21 yet. 😂

Hey all! I’m correcting myself again!
So, in the purple section of the music video, that is actually a C#/Db1 subharmonic that Marwan sang, not an E1 like I suggested. Wouldn’t be a Vocast reaction/analysis if I didn’t get something wrong, lol!
Also guys, I was informed each member did a C#/Db1 in this, and after a few more listens off-camera, that is definitely the case. TBG is mind-blowingly talented!

ethan i think at the start tomis doing inhale for the bass and everyone else is doing subs peter might be doing some sort of quitened chest fry also at the end of each phrase at the start u can hear the end of tomis inhale on a dm there is also some high singing at the start also the sounds at the start are put in such a way that the dms sound like there wavering or bouncing around also on the second or third phrase if u strain ur ears u can hear a sound that is very deep and hard to identify tone i think thats tomis inhale being swapped out by bobby doing subs or bobby doing subs and tomi still doing inhale great job ethan and great job bass gang!

I love the feel of the song and clip, it's like creepy enough to make you feel uneasy but not actual horror or anything. The arrangement was awesome, I love the little details like "footsteps footsteps" mixed in among Marwan's dry beatboxing when they're limping through the corridor, the freaky TV collage in the middle section that looks like something a serial killer would cut out of a magazine page and glue together, just overall the 2D images they put in a decoration. Kinda reminds me of Trivia Murder Party, horror vibes but kinda cheesy horror vibes at the same time. The vocals were sweet here, like the subs, the whisper layering, the CORRESPONDING MAJOR key change in Marwan's solo (don't hear that too often, reminds me of classical pieces by Vivaldi or something), the weirdest half-step key change in the middle of a line (jarring af, perfect for horror music)... incredible talent.

I started by stumbling on Geoff quite by chance, which led to VoicePlay and then later the Bass Gang and all their solowork as well. Sprinkled with a little Home Free and Avi Kaplan on that journey. Never knew I would fall in love with Bass voices.
Now I also discovered Metal, Sabaton and Tommy Johansson. Fun how life leads you to new discoveries all the time.
I seriously like BOTH the versions with Lauren Paley.
    Marwan did a fantastic arrangement.
Usually it's either Peter or Tomi soaring up high, the lows are harder to distinguish. Peter usually tells who is who in his reaction and analysis. When he puts on his opera voice he is easily spotted, but he doesn't use it all the time.
When Marwan arranges and edits you can often see how many who are double tracked by how many are visible.

According to Peter Barber when analyzing Laura hits C #6 at the end. Not C #7. More believable. The 7-register is something hardly anyone can do that clear. Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera can reach it, but I only have heard Peruvian Yma Sumac sing it clear like that. Some Coloratura sopranos should be able as well.

I told you they were incredibly good 🙂.
    And damn, they ARE. 😁
I love them. And I think they're still too much underrated and overlooked 🙄.
But, at least for me, they're righteously the 4th element of the a cappella QUADRIfecta. Not only that, but they're original, they've an unmistakeable signature both musically and visually, and they have top level singing skills and musical abilities arrangement wise. I just love their stuff. 🙂
See you next time, hoping you'll have more of their videos in the future. 🙂

    • @EthanDrewMusic
      @EthanDrewMusic  11 місяців тому

@@Guest.7289 Musicality and practicality come into question when you start dipping into zero and negative octave notes. Is it crazy low? Yes. Is it being achieved through natural chest voice? No. Is it practical? No. Can the human voice even hear the pitch being sung? Technically, in some cases, yes, but to the audience, it doesn’t matter to them after a certain point. To the majority, notes past the middle of the first octave sound like burps/frog croaks. Bragging rights are the only reason to say that you have performed a zero or negative octave note.
