KC to FtC is +4,000 feet elevation gain, so I expect that to ding the efficiency as well as any headwind vs. tailwind difference compared to the drive to KC.
Grateful for the content @outofspec Jordan! For future content, can you show the Energy Monitor app output? They estimate how much range loss from wind, temp, etc. I just completed a 1400 mi r/t in my '22 M3LR through the I-20 SE corridor and thought the route planner suggesting V2's over V3's was bonkers - good to see I'm not alone lol. Still lots of work to be done by the OEMs in improving effective winter range if they want to see wider adoption of EVs. One of my legs was 180mi and took 70% of the battery, that was with 55F temps, max 70 mph, light x-wind and starting from 100% + precondition. On the plus side, stopping for charging wasn't bad and the planner was at most 3% off (sometimes +2%). I usually target arrivals at 18-20% SoC.
I own a twin of your car except for the white interior. I completed a 1400 mile road trip from So Cal to Texas a few weeks ago and achieved 4.2 miles/kwh. I noticed efficiency drops quickly above 75 MPH. I think another possible factor for your lower efficiency is the winter tires and your awesome Monster rims, maybe also the white interior.
Glad to see you didn't get the phantom braking in western KS. My model 3 loves to randomly change lanes and nail the brakes all the time in that area. I just did the drive through there again about 3 months ago and it still did it. I am hoping when I get the latest FSD stack update it might fix this. I am in a 2019 model so still on the older FSD computer.
You don't have 13 yet. I'm in a 2024 M3 with HW4. The last couple of revs of 12.5 had a terrible phantom braking problem, would brake for oncoming headlights. 13.2.2 fixed it. I've had zero interventions with 13.2.2. I had a 2019 M3 and upgraded to a 2024 in July because they were offering free FSD transfers. I did the upgrade to get HW4 because it was obvious to me that FSD for HW3 and HW4 was going to diverge. I didn't think there would be big differences between the 2019 and the 2024 but there were. The wind noise in the 2019 was awful, it's totally fixed in the 2024. The ride is also better. If they offer FSD transfers again you should jump on it and do an upgrade to a 2025.
Former video editor here in Colorado. You need to toss your tripods! Your friend held the camera so steady made me look at video details to see if you were using a tripod! - hoping you also avoid Tesla charger at Hays, KS!
So unless I missed it earlier: how much do those wheels impact torn range, where did you get them, and how did you get the car to reflect them on the screen? Good video BTW! I’m gearing up for my 19 hour trip in my highland dual motor.

Hi Jordan. You mention that folks driving gas cars don’t understand the affects of weather or elevation changes but, in my view, that is because no gas vehicle I know reports the efficiency in the way EVs do. Cold weather doesn’t effect ICE nearly as directly as it does for EVs but colder air is more dense and harder to move for any vehicle. Folks ignorant of physics and ignorant of those affects on ALL vehicles, not just EVs, can’t know or understand those affects on efficiency. It is there as you confirm, but until ALL cars report how wasteful it is to drive really fast, uphill, in the cold, folks might remain ignorant.
Jordan that was a great video, I enjoyed watching. No drone shots on this one though? Looking forward to more videos with your new car! Hey in your wrap-up near the end, at 53:40, you didn’t update the efficiency in the graphic for the KC to Den leg (it shows the same 3.7 as the Den to KC leg).
You are joking about a "basic" Model 3 creating a great confusion as to what specifications your car has. Just because it is more convenient and efficient for you to use the Supercharger of your choice doesn't mean that the overall charging distribution for ALL Tesla cars as a whole is not better by scheduling your charging experience that way. Remember you are the exception to the rule. Most Tesla drivers are new and don't know or don't care how to charge efficiently, they just want the car to guide them the best way possible to their destination. I would like to see a race of two new model 3s simultaneously start one with charge efficiency in mind and the other just using the preprogrammed scheduled charging by Tesla routing to see what's the real life benefits of all the extra work. A 1000 mile trip would work well I think.
Re your comment at 12:05 about why the navigation changed charger selection. You are looking at the situation from your persepctive as the EV driver. The 'system' is blending your needs with the available charging assets. It will no doubt be considering charging station density, power supply availability at the various sites and goodness knows what other factors we can't possibly know about as drivers. I miight be off base here, but I am pretty sure it takes advice from Tesla's central systems and looks holistically across all charging stations and known EV needs, not just yours. Nice video btw, you two make a great couple for this sort of presentation.
Look for food stops before stopping to charge then you can get what you want before going to the charger. Unless there isn’t anything close. To many stop to charge and then think food .
You’ve asked for it a few times, but Tesla will never introduce route planning logic to favor V3 over V2 superchargers. V2 superchargers still make up a significant portion of its network, and it does not want to promote a culture of avoiding V2 chargers and overwhelming V3 chargers. It would rather let drivers spend 10 minutes extra at a V2 supercharger rather than diverting them to a V3 and overwhelming the V3s while underutilizing the V2s. If a more savvy driver wants to manually override this to favor V3 so be it by Tesla itself will never formally support it.
Drove a YP Florida To Colorado and this reminded me that Kansas never ends lol. I really don’t think route planner takes any account at all into V2 or 3. Like it’s not even a factor in its decision logic. Thanks for the vid! We’ll-edited too 😊
I choose my Superchargers based on 24/7 amenities and reasonable security, not on whether they're V2s or V3s. Just a little extra planning. There are so many Superchargers it's not that hard to do. I mean, what's the typical difference in time between a V2 and a V3? About 5 minutes?
If I recall correctly, the last software update should bring up defective superchargers in a pop up on supercharger arrival. That is so cool as before it would state "out of service pedistalls" just in the supercharger status window, which does not come up when you add the supercharger to your route, and with your arrival to the charginv stop, which I always found odd.
Driving through Kansas sucks as most of the stations are v2 chargers. I doubt the routing software will really ever put faster chargers as part of its algorithm as it’s priority is balancing the car capacity I think that Abeline charger usually has windshield stuff out in the Summer. The market next to it is a good place to stop for bathroom and all kinds of food. It’s not ideal but it works. Small mom and pop grocery stores that have been around for a long time usually have the bathrooms at the back of the stores. This is how every place used to do it too including Target, Walmart, etc.
What does FSD do for police coming up, either in front or behind, or if you’re coming up on someone pulled over where you legally have to get over or slow way way down?
Your conclusion is exactly why EVs need more battery range. Especially if we want more adoption in the mountains and the cold Midwest plains. Most people aren’t willing to charge like all of you crazy early adopters. I say this as a Tesla owner.
If only they added set arrival at charger %, I think it could be perfect. They added arrival destination % yet they left that part out which is confusing to me.
The energy app got an overhaul with the latest update, it would clarify some of questions on where the power went when the consumption is higher than expected. I usually check it after a trip.
Near the end of video he's saying "Can you hear me now?". Soon, after Grok implimentation, the car will be answering him saying "Of course I can hear you. What you want?"
Ok, i am loving how well your highway lines are so well maintained, is this just because it is early winter, here in BC and Alberta, highway lines rapidity fade in eadly winter due to sanding and salting on the high mountain roads. This is where I see a huge difference in lane keeping between FSD and Autopilot, where of course FSD rules for lane keep, but our version 12.5 FSD fails on speed limit recognition, might be a HWD3 thing, not enough CPU prossesing power to run FSD and read speed limit signs effectively.
