Hahaha imagine accidentally dropping your pen inside there when inking up! Love your videos, it got me started with my collection! Also, your website has everything, thanks!
It used to be more common, actually. Back 50 years ago (maybe more) when fountain pens were the norm, it wouldn't be unusual to see quart-size ink bottles at the post office, in schools, at banks....of course ballpoint pens did all that in, and now most companies don't offer oversized bottles. Pelikan is the only other company I know that offers a big bottle (1 liter) but that's only in two of their colors. Nathan's the only one who does them custom :)
Oh man, you'll have to talk to Drew (my shipping manager). He's a huge comic book fan! You can get a 55-gallon drum of X-feather if you want! It's true that it's not as popular as Noodler's Black or Heart of Darkness, but X-feather definitely still has a place in the world. The biggest bottle it comes in regularly is a 4.5-ounce bottle, but you can get a 16-ounce, 32-ounce, or bigger if you want.
With the numbers you gave that’s actually about 960 fills of half a ml for that 16oz. bottle which is excellent. Especially for someone like me who spends hours writing each day, thanks for sharing that these options are available. Great video, and you guys have great customer service at Goulet Pens.
I hope he is still selling this in 10 years. I've barely made a dent in my 3oz bottles but plan on having my kids use FPs when they are in school. I would definitely get the 16oz for whichever colors we use as our main inks, then stick with smaller ones for "fun" inks.
I had no idea a person could even buy pen ink in such huge bottles! Go Nathan! :) I wish I had a favorite that I loved that much for the bragging rights alone. I love variety way too much, but these are totally awesome, dude! ;)
The only difference is that Black Eel is lubricated. It's to help the seals of piston-filling pens operate more smoothly. As a consequence, the ink flows a little wetter, which is why a lot of folks like the lubricated inks. It does extend the dry time on paper though, which is why not everyone like Eel inks.
jonathan Jaffe I think the name has a lot to do with the even playing field between the fish and the noodler, which is ideally how the economic playing field would be.
Back in university I could empty my LAMY Safari's converter in a single day. A 16oz bottle can actually make sense for people that stick with one color and write a lot.
I know a lot of folks have been upset with Noodler's about the lack of ink available outside the US. Nathan feels bad about it, but it's mainly a demand issue. He's still just one man making all of the Noodler's ink (which is mind-blowing), and I can't remember the last time there was even availability on more than 70% of any of the Noodler's inks in the US.
Holy schnikes :O I love my fountain pens, and I love me some Baystate Blue or Heart of Darkness, and those huge bottles look awesome, but wow...not sure what I'd do with all that ink if it was me. O.o
Yeah, i'm with you...I have some inks I really love, but I never go through enough of any one color to get a bottle this huge! They are pretty darn awesome though :)
I was wondering how a Konrad flex nib pen + a large bottle of Noodler's black ink would work out. I've recently gotten into fountain pens and due to the Konrad's flex nib I figured it could be used for both writing elegantly as well as drawing, since it'd be a nifty way of getting those different degrees of pressure the way I normally would with a nib pen dipped in sumi ink. I do recognize the different thickness of the inks, though, but it would come in handy on the go. Thanks for the videos~
This is interesting. I'm a comic book artist and a pen & ink illustrator who recently switched from using Dr. Ph Martin India Ink to Noodler's X-Feather for its ability to hold finer lines using my tools--which are metal nibs like Hunt #102, 107, and the Imperial. I wonder if it is possible to order X-Feather at a large quantity since I go through ink like it's my daily consumption of water. lol. I heard somewhere that X-Feather isnt as popular as most of his blacks such as Heart of Darkness.
They're fountain pen inks, so they'll work in any fountain pen. "Well" is a subjective term, and the performance of certain inks varies based on its properties and the design of the pen. So my short answer would be "yes", the long answer would be "it depends".
Heck, it doesn't have to stop at a gallon, I just think that's the biggest Nathan's done (so far). He's a guy who likes to push the envelope, I bet he'd like to do something bigger ;)
Well Noodler's 'normal' bottles are 3 ounces, which is 2-3 times the volume of most other brands of ink, and Black also comes in a larger 4.5 ounce bottle. Going with 16 or 32 ounces is a serious dedication! You'd definitely want to pick up a Konrad and at least a sample of Noodler's Black (if not a 3 ounce bottle) just to make sure it's the right ink for you.
It's pretty hard to come by in the UK, or really much of anywhere outside the US. All of the Noodler's inks are made by one man, and he just can't keep up with worldwide demand. I believe the Writing Desk in the UK carries them, when they can stock it.
From my store, we ship everything as well-padded as possible. There's always a chance of breakage if there is some kind of abuse to the package, but it's rare that we have anything like that happen.
I have no idea what that pen will be at this point...it's been in development for years now and could have changed 50 times in that span of time! I'm waiting with bated breath like everyone else, but I don't think it's anywhere near ready, still.
Hopefully Brian wont mind me jumping in here, The Writing Desk hasn't had any in for a long time. I think it is Pure pens which is also Pelikan pens (just a distributor not actually Pelikan) who have a small selection of Noodlers ink in the UK.
It's not anything we carry regularly, it's by special order only. Nathan's REALLY behind though, we have orders for these large bottles that go back 6 months at this point, so don't get your hopes up too high about it, unless you have a lot of patience.
You mentioned they were similar, but what is the difference between the Noodler's black and the Eel black? You are very informative and helpful in all your videos. Thanks
Do you know if the large label for Ottoman Azure is any different? I'm going to save up for one of these, and if it does take months for Nathan to make, can I make the order before I have the money?
I'm from India and I'm thinking of buying some inks. Will they be shipped out with or without any kind of extra protection,ie,is there any chance of breakage of ink bottles??
I don't think I've seen a large Ottoman Azure before, so I don't know what label he'd use for it! We still have inks that we asked him for in September that we're still waiting for (that's 5 months now), he's crazy busy. It's a long wait, but we do still require payment for it up front, sorry. Because Nathan's time is precious, we need to make sure only serious commitments come through.

Actually, these bottles are really meant for decanting into smaller bottles for actual filling with your pen. You wouldn't want to dip your pen into a bottle this big 1,000+ times over its life.

I have just received a 350ml bottle of generic Pilot blue/black. There was I, thinking I'll never use up such a ludicrous volume of ink, and then these stonking great behemoths fill my screen. I have already bought 8 bottles of Noodler inks from your website...They are amazing...Could you please make a video to compare regular Noodler ink vs Noodler lubricant ink? Does the lubricant ink really flow smoothly than regular in a same pen?
It appears they all use the same opening size. That means you could put an ink miser inside those 32 oz bottles and fill from those. It'll be hilarious.
