The mood among residents in both Taipei and Beijing remained measured after weeks of escalating tension between China and the United States over a planned visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Mainland Chinese officials view Pelosi’s trip, which would be the highest-level visit to the self-ruled island by a US official since 1997, as a show of support for Taiwan independence. Washington has countered that there is nothing out of the ordinary about Pelosi’s trip, adding that several US lawmakers have visited Taiwan in the past. Pelosi may land in Taipei as early as August 2, 2022, according to media reports.

As a Taiwanese, I don't understand why US politicians and former office holders keep coming here.. they don't have to demonstrate their commitment so many times if they are genuinely sincere about supporting Taiwan in the event of a conflict. Their constant visits just seem designed to be deliberately provocative. Then what happens will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

But Afghanistan has been going on for 20 years and for some reason the U.S. stop putting the effort to completely eliminate the Taliban. The Taliban were hiding in plain sight within the society of the American backed Afghan government. Sometimes soldiers would have to pay bribes not to get attacked from going from point A to point B. The military may do not want to be efficiently brutal on the Taliban for fearing of the American reputation. Plus, the incompetent Afghan government only lowered the American military morale to continue to fight for the country.

America has never fought another country without benefit. As soon as Taiwan no longer has a lions share on chip manufacturing, they’ll be on their own. Makes no sense for America to pour billions of military equipment into Taiwan when many of their own territories are in dire need of rebuilding and improvement. Multiple chip FABs are under construction and set to be complete 2024-2025. By then, Taiwan will more or less be freely handed to China probably as terms for debt forgiveness or something.

Here's the thing with Taiwan: 1) it has its own government independent from the CCP, 2) it has its own currency, 3) it has its own economy -- China (PRC) didn't even include Taiwan's GDP within its own, and 4) Taiwan has a Constitution -- and that Constitution was ratified in 1946, a whole 3 years before Mao Zedong declared the creation of the People's Republic of China, and 36 years before the PRC adopted their own Constitution.
The U.S. may recognize Taiwan as being a part of China; but we do recognize Taiwan's governing authority (as listed in the Taiwan Relations Act).
China can protest and whine all it wants, Taiwan welcomes Pelosi and Pelosi is obliged to go -- as it is consistent with our national interests. The more force or intimidation China uses in regards to Taiwan, the more involvement the U.S. will likely have.

The difference in their form of government makes a huge contrast in their ideals.
If what you said was true then the Taiwanese would have no objections joining China, but that is a very superficial asessment. Taiwan has a strong national identity based on the native Taiwanese one, which well precedes Chinese influence. They do not look the same either, have different ancestry, native Taiwanese language which people still speak, and vastly different morals, cultural and political norms. So no, they won't just blend into China by choice.
Taiwan people surely will not want to become part of China. They already separated for so many years. Having different ideology is a big things for people to live.
With so many vast area, many would wonder how small island like Taiwan have a significant place for communist party.

She is wanted. Taiwan has been trying to grow closer to the U.S for years now. Also, the U.S has had countless politicians from all over the word visit and incorporate themselves into U.S politics, including China.
China wants Taiwan. Like Russia wants Ukraine. They will eventually take it by force resulting in countless innocent men, women, and children dieing horrifically. A world superpower like the U.S supporting Taiwan as it's own independent country would help prevent such a catastrophe from happening.
