Saimir Pirgu, Venera Gimadieva and The Royal Opera Chorus sing La traviata's famous drinking song.
‘A toast to the pleasures of life!’ - so sings Violetta, her new admirer Alfredo and her party guests in the opening scene of Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata. But beneath the surface glamour of Violetta’s Parisian life run darker undercurrents: her doomed love for Alfredo and the tensions the lovers encounter when they break society’s conventions. La traviata, based on Alexandre Dumas fils’s play La Dame aux camélias, is one of Verdi’s most popular operas, combining drama, profound emotion and wonderful melodies.
Richard Eyre’s classic production conveys the indulgent social whirl of 19th-century Paris. It provides a vivid setting for Verdi’s tuneful score, which includes such favourites as Violetta’s introspective ‘Ah fors’è lui’ and ecstatic ‘Sempre libera’; the duet ‘Pura siccome un angelo’ as Giorgio Germont begs Violetta to leave Alfredo; and ‘Parigi, o cara’, in which the lovers poignantly imagine a life that will never be theirs. The role of Violetta (the ‘fallen woman’ of the title) is one of Verdi’s most complex and enduring characters.

The classiest way to say "Let's all get wasted!" 😂😂😂 One of my fave arias!
Ha ha!
I love this comment so bad that I can't stop laughing as I read it out loud! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
To me it's a tie with 'Im Freuerstrom der Reben' from 'Die Fledermaus'/'The Bat'/'Revenge of the Bat'. Though that one's a bit livelier.
Mine too
It screams Bacchus, god of wine and mirth to me. 🤣🤣🤣
This song is one of the best showcases of how the Italian language can be beautiful.
Never thought I'd see the day when a bunch of random commenters on the internet would know more about singing than professional opera singers! Please guys... when you make your professional debuts and are invited onstage at the Royal Opera, do invite me! I look forward to seeing how much better you all do.
Is this an opera, actually first thought it was a musical, lol.
Huh? All I see are positive comments
@J H You are correct. I can’t sing opera, but I certainly can tell if a singer is on pitch!
This is indeed the wrong approach. Telling if something is bad has nothing to do if whether the critic can do it him/herself. The tenor here is sharp a lot!
That's like saying u have to be a sommelier to have an opinion on wine, what an arrogant, stuck up thought process. It's art, the least objective of subjects.
came for her dress stayed for her voice
It’s one of the nicest looking productions out there these days. Most of European opera houses have switched to lifeless minimalism or jarring “modern” eyesores and it makes me want to puke.
Venera Gimadieva is not only a pretty face, but also there's something in her demeanor and voice when she plays violetta that's mesmerizing.
Anyway, in a fan of her so I can't say I'm fully impartial 😁
You guys have amazing voices seriously.I love the performance.
Me too
Another marvelous work by Venera Gimadieva. While performance in 2014 was in contemporary style, this was closer to traditional; when the opera was firstly introduced by Verdi. To me, both are great! 👏👏👏
this duet would make anyone fall in love with the art of opera ... !⚘⚘⚘
Lovely operatic duet. Magical voices and music.😻
❤ Grandioso, bellissimo, e spectacolare !
Jedna z najbardziej popularnych arii operowych. Chętnie słuchana.
What a performance. Thank you for such an exquisite scene.
Renée Fleming singing Violetta is unique and unmatched at present and for many years in the future.
AMEN!!
next time at a house party, i'm gonna break into this song 😂
I seen this production live and it was absolutely breathtaking,l Pirgu and Gimadieva were wonderful in their roles
She was alright i suppose but his voice just doesn't cut it for me.I saw this with Joseph Calleja and he was fabulous.Renee Fleming was Violetta on that performance and she was beguiling.
Same! Before COVID. It was sublime 💜
@@amybaker4654 I totally agree with you!
Agree with you, same!
I've seen this product with the same soprano and it was magical.
She is so beautiful! Fine voice too.
Ah. the famous Brindisi of La Traviata. Excellent incipt.
Love this opera
Beautiful performance. As an aside, this reminds me of why the philistine spirit retains its allure over people. While at the same time, the emptiness and the meaningless in the words of the hedonist character becomes so striking amidst all that exuberant performance. That is not to say well tempered enjoyment has no place in our lives.
It is beautiful song in the world!! Classic music forever. This is my love music
😄
I love this song!!!
He's so handsome and she, so beautiful. This is a goddamn masterclass of casting and talent. Once again the Royal Opera is my favorite.

très belle pièce de théâtre
Minunat!
I think Alfredo should've been casted as Giorgios understudy. Violetta sounds amazing.
Honken I agree! She does! I was wondering if anyone was going to comment that... Because I'm honestly amazed by her voice.
Nuccia Focile
La vita è nel tripudio
Quando non s'ami ancora
Nol dite a chi l'ignora
Now this song, is fire
SHE IS WOUNDERFUL, WOW!!!
Much gratitude:)
SPLENDID! CHEERS!🥂🍶🍾🍺

Just saw a commercial with this tune. Can’t believe I found where it was from in 10 minutes on UA-cam. Yay!
Weird question but what commercial was it from?
cambio fi costume cambio d'epoca....straordinari
Bravo
Voando 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩Voando 🤩😍😍👏😍👏😍👏👏
This performance shows us that the human voice is thee most beautiful instrument. Fantastic! Thank you for sharing!
There is a humourous/black scene in the film "The Lost Weekend" 1945 (for which Ray Milland won his Oscar) when he played hopeless alcoholic Don Birnam .He is watching this drinking scene on stage when the actors holding alcoholic drinks give him an immediate craving for whiskey. This leads him to meet his girlfriend played by Jane Wyman.
morphyesque I want to see it!!
I feel like it’s redundant to say this but I just gotta, this is beautiful PR music. Bravo 👏 👏
First time I heard this song, it was in the _Mr. Magoo_ movie!
💕💕
❤❤❤❤❤❤
💖
Kramer: "Jerry you don't understand, that's the way they talk in Italy. They sing to one another"
Incredible!
🖤
I don't really like his voice. Maybe it doesn't suit the part... just an opinion
totally agree
I have heard him sing in another opera and he sounded good, i think that it was The Barber of Seville. Its difficult to say why he sounds poor here, as you say Verdi may not be his strong point.
totally agree, lacks the timber of a great tenor.
Benedetta Baroni I completely agree
For all intents and purposes, he is absolutely fine. Everybody needs to stop comparing him to Pavarotti.
👏👏
Fallegar laglínur og ROMANCE!
Why is Violeta dressed like Empress Elizabeth? , anyway the Soprano is amazing and gorgeous it really suits her
The intonation of this Alfredo often leaves much to be desired.
paolo boriosi After hearing so many good things about the tenor I was a bit disappointed. Maybe it was an off-day.🤷♀️🤓
He's got the looks tho.
Melancholie which is completely not the point of an audio based medium.
well said !
He also sounds flat!
Pirgu is wonderful. His technique is superb and Alfredo is one of the roles that suits him perfectly!
Interessante
Are we going to get a DVD?
I wonder if you got the DVD now
Wena ganchooo!!!
Where if I want to watch the full version of this show ?
Брава
Please will anyone tell me where to get this version on video? I can't find it anywhere. This is the only one I'm interested in owning
i wish to perform here someday
WOW! ROH is still using this production from 1997 where Gheorghiu debut as Violetta?!
The Royal Opera's production of La traviata was created in 1994 by Richard Eyre, starring Angela Gheorghiu as Violetta. Gheorghiu had made her ROH debut in 1992 as Mimì in La bohème.
Ok...at least I got the soprano right. lol
Royal Opera House please keep using it, it’s beautiful. Stay away from the post-modernism PLEASE!!
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🌹🌹❤️
Basically happy hour in the old days
The Tenor needs help.Timing c'in vita is off. Listen to MARIA CEBOTARI and SERGEI LEMESHEV for real singing.
I looked up the singers you mentioned and omg yes Lemeshev is much better singer. I think they were singing the russian version though. thank you!
Nice kalangan yan
feels like the audio is about 2ms out of sync. whomever edited this should've taken a little more time to sync things up.
Someone teach me how to judge a singing voice, please... Why and how did you come to the conclusion that they are good/bad??
Nicole M
It takes a lot of listening, developing your taste and not infrequently hear people sound very dogmatic forgetting there is a lot of subjective component in their opinion. Don’t be discouraged by what others say. Just go with what you like or don’t.
Either a lot of listening, a lot of knowledge or some people are just born with good ears. His voice sounds off.
Nicole M
You take years of learning how to implement the voice in a pleasing, beautiful, and healthy way. I’ve been singing and learning operatic technique for the last 15 years (since I was ten). Some of the voices I adored in the beginning of my education I look on now like a drunk looks on the night before. “What the hell was I thinking”. Once you learn the basis of good technique and what the proper sound should be you move onto style. For instance, you don’t sing Verdi the same way you would sing Handel or Puccini. It was completely different times in musical history with different musical traditions and music written by vastly different people.
For instance here, this tenors voice sounds (to me) strained, his timbre is not very pleasing here, he is constantly off pitch and his legato or smoothness of vocal line is awful. If I had to guess I would say he is actually a Baritone and he is trying to sing as a tenor. He may “have the range” but the beauty is lacking because it’s not a natural placement for his voice. That isn’t to say he doesn’t have a nice voice to your everyday person. But most opera lovers are practical fanatics after the stupendous, supreme, and divine singers.
I would Suggest listening to these singers, as they are examples of truly FINE singers.
Maria Callas (recording between 1949 and 1959), Joan Sutherland (recording from 1959-1979) the first two I consider the finest Sopranos of the 20th century. Montserrat Caballe, Luciano Pavarotti, Franco Corelli, Giusseppe DiStefano, Anna Moffo, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Kathleen Ferrier, Janet Baker, Nicolai Gedda. I could go on but I’ll stop there.
If you’re truly interested in learning more about the operatic voice a decent book to start with is Tetrazzini’s “How to Sing”. It was published in 1909, I think, so some of the terminology is out of date but it’s very educational and an ebook version is about $3.

Tell me La Traviata is your favorite opera and I'll marry you
Every soprano who sings Tosca tries to make her opening words - frantic calls of her lover’s name, before she’s even onstage - sound suspicious. The title character of Puccini’s great opera is an acclaimed prima donna in Rome in 1800. Tosca is passionate and jealous. So she must be wondering why the door to the church where her beloved Mario is painting a mural is locked. And who did she just hear him whispering with?
