What is a Dystopia? ft. Dr Matthew Leggatt

What is a dystopia? Where did the term come from? What are dystopias responding to? What are some key characteristics of dystopias? What are some examples of fictional and real dystopias?
Answers to these questions - and many more - are provided in this video, in which I am incredibly lucky to be able to chat with Dr Matthew Leggatt of the University of Winchester about all things dystopian. Our discussion is split into three sections:
'Discovering Dystopia', in which we focus on the utopian origins of literary dystopias;
'Defining Dystopia', in which we chat about some key dystopian characteristics and work towards a definition for the term 'dystopia';
And 'Dismantling Dystopia', in which we problematise our earlier definition of 'dystopia', add in some extra caveats or ideas, and deconstruct some anticipated misconceptions.
We discuss absolutely loads in this video, including key texts, thinkers, critics, and concepts. Hopefully something we discuss will provide you with the answers you need, help develop your understanding of dystopia (and perhaps also utopia), and will generally be interesting!
