I dunno. I've seen some amazing animations in 3D games. Just not 3D Fire Emblem. I just think that their biggest issue with animations these days is wanting a sword to look the same between classes, rather than a sword in the hands of a thief Is a knife, the sword manifests as a pair of knives for assassins, it's a katana in the hand of a swordmaster or Lyn, or a rapier in Eli wood's hands. Give it to a General and it's a Final Fantasy style Great sword. Different weapons lend themselves to different animations. Less flair for the class design and animations came about as a result of wanting to let a player have a custom 3D model for their sword that they forged back in PoR. So every animation had to be keyed to a single length straight sword.
@@mattgreen7692 I think they got the swords down fairly well in 3 houses though, I think it's not only the weapon that's the problem, but how animations interact with the terrain. Zephiel's crit animation is the same regardless of range, so I'm convinced that it's not magic, he just swings his sword with such force that he kills Roy despite missing by about 10 feet.
It is most definitely a wave based sword, not magic per se. The Ragnell, Alondite, Gurgurant, and the long ranged swords in Radiant Dawn all follow this same trend. Magic based swords in the GBA FE games attack with full might at close range, but hit on resistance. In long range, they hit at half your strength and on resistance (to simulate your magic stat.) Whereas the swords like Ragnell Hit with strength at full, whether close or long range, and hit on the defense of the enemy.

imo the better 3D animations are from RD. Since skills weren't nearly as universal to force the same animations across the board for them, all the tier 3 class skills get fairly unique animations. Alongside this, each class had up to three unique regular attack animations and up to two different critical animations depending on whether the crit would kill or not (with the exception of magic attacks which had only two different regular attacks and melee ranged attacks that had one each for example). They also started having intro poses and victory poses in RD which add on to this. And although PoR had mostly static and stiff animations I will say that it has the better Aether and Astra animations because they made them fast which made them just as flashy as GBA animations imo. A few of these animations were even inspired by the GBA ones such as Aether being similar to the Mercenary and Hero crits (Ike throws his sword/axe up in the air before coming down with it) and RD mages forming a magic circle before attacking. I know almost everyone recognizes the GBA animations as very flashy and they had full control over that with the flexible of 2D sprites, but I feel like people sleep on RD animations because the 3D games couldn't be as flashy and the prequel game PoR had the slowest and stiffest animations overall. If you have the time, I'd recommend watching shadowofchaos725's RD critical hit collection. There are several videos and it pretty much covers every single character (yes even Fiona and Meg so you can actually see them in action) so there will be a lot of repeats in animations, but imo it's very worth to watch.

@@fight_and_die1573 - right? It's a really neat detail. Only makes sense in anime-land, but it sure looks cool. I also like how the Hero class (upgraded mercenary) stores his sword inside the shield. Neat little touches that make the Fire Emblem world visually interesting. :)
Fomortiis still has my favorite attack of all the final bosses, Ravager. He just punches your units, like he is the Demon King, he has the power to cast powerful spells, raise the dead. But instead he just punches you, granted getting punched by an arm his size would probably be deadly anyways, it's just funny to me. It just makes me think that his soulless body was just thinking, "Ah screw this magic crap."
I’m still trying to figure out why Guy got his own unique Swordmaster sprite. His stance is just different enough from Karel’s and Karla’s to be noticeable, although I’m sure it makes no difference to the attack animations.
@@paulchapman8023 On the one hand, that probably took less effort than Hawkeye's unique sprite. But on the other hand, why bother with something so minor?
I really want a Fire Emblem with the same level of epicness in its animation as the GBA series. Stuff like Heroes', Swordmasters', Lyn's, Rogues', Assassins', they just don't do the crazy attack animation like that anymore. And you don't have to tell me why they can't be or that it's still cool. I know why they don't make them as they were back then.

A year later but idc I love Lord Ephraim so much I hacked his Mounted promotion Great Lord to Lord Ephraim because I wanna keep using his on-foot animations.
I remember seeing 3:07 happen just after encountering the boss who just before the battle told Ephraim he would regret challenging him. It was glorious.
I think it's kind of funny that out of the Binding Blade/Blazing Sword protagonists, the animations for all of them are crazy, except for Hector (And Lillina, but she doesn't have the Lord class despite being a main character, so she gets a pass). Roy does a sick sword twirl and impales the opponent all the way through, Lyn does a straight up 'teleports-behind-you' anime move, and Eliwood might have the most badass crit animation of any Fire Emblem game, basically Roy's but even cooler, after impaling them, he does a backflip and pulls the sword up through their body. And then Hector just spins his axe one extra time and does the same animation XD.
When I first played FE:If this was the thing I missed most. These animations are works of art and I hope they inspire indies of future generations. Quality animation is challenging, but worth every frame. : )
You know, this is why I'm glad I grew up on this series. These animations right here. If we ever see a remake of any of the GBA titles, I'd love to have these animations brought back in 3D.
The druid one is severely underrated, always been one of my favorite classes and it's entire build of like, the user overflowing with magic that it's creating magic circles under their feet that might up immensely and even move the wind around before unleashing it (Especially with Dark Magic having some of the cooler magic animations), just bliss
what i find most interesting is that they made crit animations for EVERYTHING including those pit monsters (Wights, Gorgon, Cyclops etc.) Later games just make the simple "sparkle" to show a crit and thats it. Really shows how much they cared in these older titles
Twirling weapons* around with no regard for safety is a surefire way to instantly kill any foe**. *or your entire body, if you're Zephiel or a Warrior **as long as your target is relatively weak
7:19 every time I hear that I get so hype that I throw my gameboy advance into the wall with enough force to break the strong nuclear force within the atoms of the gameboy's components. So I have to buy a new gameboy advance every time my brigands crit but it's definitely worth it.
Sure 3D is nice and all i can say they have some cool animations and everything BUT MAN, the charm and creativity in these animations are just insane. The movement feels really good to watch.
No, the sacred twin weapons are well designed and they have triple effectiveness on all monsters. The problem is the design of final bosses. I don't think they've ever gotten that right outside of Three Houses. Fomortis needs more stats on his defenses to compensate for the triple effectiveness, making him immune to regular weapons but still killable with the Sacred weapons. They held back on some final bosses for the sole fact that, if my design strategy was implemented, then you'd be soft blocked if you had either none of the weapons left, or no one who could use the ones you do have left.
Can we all admit that the crit animations in here are phucking epic compared to the newer FE games. I get it, realistically you can't throw a sword 30 feet to heaven and then land on your opponent but that's what I love with the style of the GBA versions they are exaggerated to be awesome.
And yet they are somehow still more realistic than the newer ones. I mean they only go ham on the crits, otherwise the gba games arw pretty down to earth, be it character design storylines and animations and i hate that we lost that. The crits look cool in comparison to the normal relatively down to earth animations, thats what makes them so special. If every animation was full of bells and whistles like lets say fates, crits become meanigless
Agreed. At least they're (slowly) getting better with the 3D animations, although I thought the ones from 3H would be far more impressive since there was quite an improvement from Fates to Echoes (specifically the Dread Fighter crit animation). Falcon Knights have pretty cool animations in 3H ,overall (double, swooping drill with a lance; rapid fire arrows with a flash of the sun from behind) but there's little else that immediately comes to mind. Bow Knights do have that ridiculous "360 no-scope" crit, though.
Now let me just say something. The SNES Fire Emblem crit animations were pretty cool as well... But those GBA ones are unmatched. Warrior' helicopter attack is so cool
I always hear about GBA animations online and thought no way they could look good seeing its on GBA. Boy was I wrong, might even play one of em these look so tight!
one of my biggest hopes is that if we do ever see these sprites again, they'll do a pass over a lot of the older sprites to bring them up to the absurd quality of 8's like, just take in the rogue's sprite. the weight and flow of the animation is _so_ good and the shading is _so_ eye-catching. almost all of the 6-era animations ( rip generic soldiers ) are incredibly iconic and have strong key posing, but they rely pretty heavily on that to make up for low frame counts and sometimes stiff timing. it'd be so nice to see v2s of a lot of 'em, just to fully illustrate the improvements in the art direction across the three games
I've played this game, many a time, and I have never seen his Critical until now! Very cool! In fact, I plan on playing all the GBA FE games on my UA-cam channel soon enough. I have some things going on now, and have many plans and things to get ahold of, including good editing software, but I do have my GBA runs loosely planned out already.

More like a luchador spin.
3:53 General is the best rotation and the best motion!
And the lance animation for them is cool too
I always loved the chain action, especially when the target survives and the weapon is first embedded in them, then yanked back by the chain. Scorpion would approve. GET OVER HERE!
GBA General is one of the best design ever, sick thicc steel wall with chained weapons, absolute signs of raw power.
It took me forever to realise that the Knights use their chest plate as a shield when attaching and replaces it when they return to neutral position
@@fight_and_die1573 - right? It's a really neat detail. Only makes sense in anime-land, but it sure looks cool. I also like how the Hero class (upgraded mercenary) stores his sword inside the shield. Neat little touches that make the Fire Emblem world visually interesting. :)

God, the hero animations are so good. The shield throw just gives a totally cocky and showboaty feel that just works so well.

5:46 so clean. The little tilt of the knife is *chefs kiss*
A really good one, looks very fluid
Even after all these years...
...I'm still trying to figure out why Hawkeye got his own unique sprite.
Attention to details. This happens even in three houses.
@@Rolanmen1 speaking of, even generic armor for your units are colored to their personal pallete.

Hey there. You should Google "Fire Emblem Vision Quest"! :)
@@linksgruenversifft2133 that fangame is great. Very hard compere to the officials and The Last Promise. But great. :)
@@andile-blazermakhanya2047 except for some forgivable faults I found it to be just as good as the official games and better than last promise but this is of course very subjective. I did enjoy last promise a lot too :)
GBA Assassin crits are badass, especially when you see that shutter and know what comes next, *the SILENCER!*
The closest you'll get is Warriors.
Ephraim's on foot crit is incredibly satisfying.
A year later but idc I love Lord Ephraim so much I hacked his Mounted promotion Great Lord to Lord Ephraim because I wanna keep using his on-foot animations.
gba crit animations are so creative and varied.
then you have 80% of the fan made ones simply being the swordsmaster one but multiplied by 100.

I love how the animation of lances chains retract back to the generals. Smoothhhh~~ 👌
Getting critted by the Fire Dragon is like God telling you that He hates *you* personally.
Hand axe and tomahawk going back to the hands is so unreal
The retro-inspired games of recent years have yet to come close to reaching this kind of pixel art beauty.
I like how most of the animations seem to get fancier with promotions
Yes but Why cavalier has better Crit animations than Paladin?
I disagree. A lot of these animations are so ridiculously over the top that they only really work in low resolution 2D.
The druid one is severely underrated, always been one of my favorite classes and it's entire build of like, the user overflowing with magic that it's creating magic circles under their feet that might up immensely and even move the wind around before unleashing it (Especially with Dark Magic having some of the cooler magic animations), just bliss
Anyone else caught off guard by the Brigand literally screaming? No spins, no flash, just *RAAAAARG-*

7:20 how many books did you have to feed Gonzales to get him to 100 hit with a Brave Axe?
i can just imagine him swallowing the secret books whole and getting 2 more hit
@@noishfanboy1141 Fitting, Gonzales definitely doesn't know how to read books

Literally no one:
Not a single person:
Brigand: *GRAAAAAGH*
Technically not a person but also Gargoyle: *shriek* *shriek* *SHRIEEEEEK*
what i find most interesting is that they made crit animations for EVERYTHING including those pit monsters (Wights, Gorgon, Cyclops etc.) Later games just make the simple "sparkle" to show a crit and thats it.
Really shows how much they cared in these older titles
Elliwood's is my favorite. So elegant and precise.

Ephraim one shot him?
@@jefinathariwirza6578 lol , pretty much, the sacred twin weapons are too op against him.
They held back on some final bosses for the sole fact that, if my design strategy was implemented, then you'd be soft blocked if you had either none of the weapons left, or no one who could use the ones you do have left.
this is amazing work!
Can we all admit that the crit animations in here are phucking epic compared to the newer FE games. I get it, realistically you can't throw a sword 30 feet to heaven and then land on your opponent but that's what I love with the style of the GBA versions they are exaggerated to be awesome.
And even then, they make sense on why the attacks make more damage, they take advantage of the momentum to give a stronger hit
But also you shouldn't underestimate the GBA. Even though it's 160p many of it's games still hold up very well.
Why put realism in a game with dragons and magic?
LEMME DO BACKFLIP WHILE TROWING THE SWORD AT THE AIR AND THEN HIT
I always loved Gonzales' scream! 7:19
14:14 Nergal’s healing animation is legit scary.
Somewhere between a glitched evo and some mass casting related to its original animation.
9:51 **rise to the jam intensifies**
one of my biggest hopes is that if we do ever see these sprites again, they'll do a pass over a lot of the older sprites to bring them up to the absurd quality of 8's
like, just take in the rogue's sprite. the weight and flow of the animation is _so_ good and the shading is _so_ eye-catching. almost all of the 6-era animations ( rip generic soldiers ) are incredibly iconic and have strong key posing, but they rely pretty heavily on that to make up for low frame counts and sometimes stiff timing. it'd be so nice to see v2s of a lot of 'em, just to fully illustrate the improvements in the art direction across the three games
The Rogue animation will never NOT make me *_impossibly erect._*
Lyn’s are definitely some of the best. Afterimages are just so badass
Some of my favorites have to be the great knights (5:16)
The way they just trust there arms behind them for the full force is unique to them
I liked how the animations of ewan and amelia do,its like they are so disastrous, like they are really beginners
Meanwhile Ross strikes things as if they were a wood log, they are really good at characterizing with the animations tbh
I’m lucky enough to have never seen a brigands crit animation. That yell would have scarred younger me.
I miss this animation and aesthetic. Every time I'm playing these games and a crit happens it alwayss hypes me up
I love the Pegasus Knight/Falcon Knight animations so much, the flap away is so fluid
Lyn and myrmidons/swordmasters going super saiyan are still my favorite crit animations to date.

It's a nice touch that all the trainee's crits look like accidents. They caught both themselves and their enemies off guard.
