    If you leave alkaline batteries in the unit and forget about it you'll have a bad time. Use lithiums when available and always remove batteries when storing nods. I've cleaned too many battery compartments of exploded costco batteries because a dumb boot left batteries in his PVS14.

      @@elijahreeves4890 nah. I'm not sure why but if you leave alkaline batteries alone long enough they like to leak and get nasty crust everywhere. It's just a better idea to use expensive lithium batteries in your $2k piece of equipment and not fuck it up

      The battery life is so long that a single lithium will get most guys through a week of actual use and really a month of typical use anyway. Totally worth it to just use lithium

    I fixed these in the army. It does make me laugh at the precautions people take sometimes. I fixed some in the field under a flashlight on a concrete barrier and I got them going again. None of this was on my dime though. So take all the precautions you want. I went through thousands of NVD's and never hurt electronics in one. they are pretty resilient. I poured water out of a set of pvs-14's and they some how survived. I was also tasked to destroy tubes considered unusable. It takes a punch and a hammer to do damage to the lenses on the tube. they are seriously tough.

    • @angryasianfab

    • @MarcoDambrosio96

      What do you mean by fixing these? Were you opening them up and repairing the inside components of the intensifier tube? or Just the electronic connections outside of the intensifier tube?

    • @codyl417
      @codyl417 Рік тому +22

      @@MarcoDambrosio96 as far as I know there's really no getting into the tubes themselves. maybe the contacts on the outside of the tube. I would troubleshoot hundreds a year. The infantry was pretty rough on them. to be honest, the most common issue I saw that required me to open them up, in a field environment, would be the retaining ring popping free. I'm assuming the unit was hit or dropped and the tube would then slide back and forth in the unit going in and out of focus.

    • @MarcoDambrosio96
      @MarcoDambrosio96 Рік тому +5

      @@codyl417 Thanks for clarifying. That's what I assumed, that you can't open the Intensifier tube itself. It's good to know that they're resilient enough that to permanently damage you need a punch and hammer.

    Great presentation, Dude!!! I subscribed, ordered my parts! Love your humor, thank you for your service!! Me..26 yrs CSAR.
    For ALL batteries and compartments... use a Q tip and cheap Silicone grease on threads, remove rubber Oring and coat/replace, the lining of the compartment and all the springs, and connectors. On non-optic equipment, I fill all voilds... why? Prevents water ingress, keeps seals lifelong, prevents ALL corrosion damage to metal parts WHEN (not if) a battery leaks AND makes it much easier to remove a battery if it swells... Everything with batteries gets this treatment the day it arrives and has saved me $100s or more... Combat Proven, and costs almost nothing!!!Party 🥳 On!🎉

    This is a great take on how to build , first one i ever watched was S2 Underground, he has a good substitute for being able to purge the unit next to the "factory nitrogen" process. This is definitely educational when it comes to assembly, as far as the fine threads with the light-piep are concerned, being a licenced plumber for 30 years and screwing pipe together as part of the job description really helps a great deal on feeling out the horrible realization of cross-threading , and my guy is completely correct....if the threads sart to tighten up from the get-go , STOP and back em off and re-try 👍🏻

    Love your video - I think I will give it a go. I was in the Ranger Bn in the early 80's, before you where thought of, I imagine. We had PVS-5 gen 1. there was no depth perception in those either. Two stories, one funny the other not so. 1982 doing spec ops training in the Nevada desert, We had a C130 loaded with 2 loaches, 4 KX250's and 1 jeep all fully loaded with gas and ammo. I had 16 rounds of 60mm mortar ammo on my back (120lbs), Pilot landed plane a mile short of the run way. When plane hit the nose broke up and it just scoped dirt into plane. 6 Rangers and 1 loach pilot where killed. I don't think I moved the whole crash even though was just sitting on floor at the start, but my AG had a loach come down on his leg and broke his femur. They heard the explosion from that plane burning, in Reno, 60 miles away. 1981 we had a Hdqr 2lt step out of a helicopter at 60 feet. The choppers don't land, when they where close to the ground the payload master would tell you to jump, since the bird raised as people got off, you did not wait to jump. He was a little antsy and went a little soon. Was in PT a month later in full body cast with arms up and out. He learned a big lesson that night.

    WRT the scratched intensifier: is this something that could potentially be repaired? I don't know if the lens is coated on the outside or not. I couldn't find any info on the specific construction of the intensifiers.

    • @angryasianfab
      @angryasianfab  6 місяців тому +1

      No. Some minor blems can be removed by "black boxing" but anything that has a line/scratch like the one in the video cannot be repaired. The "line" was most likely caused by someone leaving their 14 outside in the daylight. Even if the unit is not powered on it if the objective lens is pointed towards the sun it will damage the tube. The line is most likely the sun's path after being exposed for an hour or so.

      Between 10000-15000 hours. From what I have seen tube manufacturers put a 3 year "warranty" date on these, but that doesn't mean its not good past the "expiration" date. Some guys are using 20+ year old tubes with no issues.

    I have a few questions. What generation of device are you running in this particular PVS-14? What comes in a PVS-14 kit? Lastly, do you think you could replicate the device if you wanted if you wanted to do a dual PVS-14 setup? Your video was helpful.

I think Unity or TNVC has an adjustable 14 mount that you could use with most optics. But in my opinion your 14 is wasted on a rifle because the only time you can use it is when aiming your rifle, whereas wearing it doesn't "tunnel vision" you in a sense. That's why we used IR lasers on our rifles with wearable NV.
