You spend the series witnessing the gruesome destruction Johan causes. But in the end his story is the saddest of them all. I think you captured that very well.
I just finished this anime for the second time, and while I can't say the experience was more enjoyable than the first time I watched it, it did help me understand a few important plot points a lot better. This second run-through did make me cry at a couple of scenes. Like when they first actually SHOWED Nina (Anna, at that point) shooting Johan in the forehead... And the scene where Nina and Johan both stood inside the ruins of Red Rose Mansion... And of course the "showdown scene" in episode 73. That look in Johan's eyes, practically BEGGING Tenma to shoot him... that part especially tore me up. Amazing song, fitting an amazing anime and an amazing character. As a villain, Johan was perfect. Listening to this, and the accompanying footage... THE FEELS!!! :'(
I love Johan, for me he is the best villain of anime that I know, he's so awesome, so perfect even in his darkness, At the end i'm so sad for him... he has so pain inside him
Thank you for all of these POWERFUL "monster" memories over these past 7 years. I used to watch your videos as a different user, but that account is no more... Thank you for your inspiring masterpieces. This one is one of my favorites from you, and I LOVE how you did the ending where you used dr. tenma as a transitional device to switch from adult johan to the younger johan where tenma first came into johan's life and started to "perceive" all of this happening. This beautiful work of art reminds me of the pulchritude of the fulfilling joys of life. *Bows* thank you💓
Thank you for posting this video. I think that this is very well done. A valid tribute to Naoki Urasawa's masterpiece. Good choice for the song as well.
MONSTER is the best anime ever and you did vary good showing it. i have a question for you where did you get those clips/ downloaded videos. i wanted to made a monster amv for a long time but i can never find where to download the videos.also if you want i'll try to spread your video. i have did it with lots of the other monster amvs. X)
Sorry for the late reply. but THANKS you so much! i hope you keep on making videos. there really good. i have found so more of yours. and good luck to you too. X)
I actually didn't download the clips. I used QuickTime Player's screen recording function to get the footage I needed. Since the series is available on youtube, all I had to do was start a screen recording and then let the episodes play on fullscreen. Unfortunately, this means I don't have any audio from the episodes, which is a pity. If you don't already have one, there are free screen recorders available online. Thanks for your comment and good luck with your endeavor! I hope I helped.
i just wish the ending was less open... wtf is gonna happen now. is it all gonna repeat ughhhhhhhh I cant stop thinking about this anime since I finished it
+Harley Quinn I think (and partly hope) that in the end, which is in this case episode 73, that Johan changed... in a way. Remember when Nina said to him, "It's not too late, Johan. I forgive you for what you did. You can end this"? That's when he answered, "It's no use. There are some things that just cannot be undone." I think he deeply regretted his actions at that point. The only reason he committed his final crime (holding Vin, the child, at gunpoint) was so Tenma could end his misery for him. Those eyes of Johan's really made me cry manly tears, just begging for Tenma to shoot... While I admit I find it pretty ridiculous that Johan wasn't handcuffed to his bed even if he was in a coma (it was a police hospital, after all, so why risk a mass murderer to escape?), I believe he really did escape. If he did, hopefully he really did change and stay under the radar, trying to live his life. Though the question of whether he DESERVES to be free... that's another matter. While Johan is the kind of villain you end up sympathizing with. At least, that was the case for me. However, he did kill countless people, and had even more people killed for him, as well. So, no, I think he should be tried in court and found guilty of being a serial killer and go to prison. Killing people is unforgivable, no matter how sad your backstory is. But I really think it's very fitting to Mr. Urasawa's style of writing. And open endings like this one always manage to keep you thinking about it for days if not weeks. It's food for thought, and I think Mr. Urasawa has done an wonderful job of keeping us guessing throughout the entire series. The ending was no different. Sorry for the rant! :)
Dennis Parlevliet Oh hey no problem at all it was interesting to read :D I agree with pretty much everything except that id probbaly rather lock him up in an asylum lmao poor boy. Hes my absolute favourite character in the whole series I love him to bits. And yeah that last action was an act of desperation..like..jesus..did you see his face? he was devastated...all i wanted though was just Johan to hug nina/anna or whatever..that wouldve been so cute..they should finaly be able to be brother and sister ;A; but yeah the open ending is really good. i just hate it cause I wanna know what happens with my poor little baby :'D
+Harley Quinn Heheh, so do I, actually! :) While I haven't read any of his manga yet, I'm considering to check out some of Mr. Urasawa's other works. I've heard some people say Monster wasn't even his best one, so that really makes me curious! On the topic of manga, though... I heard there's one called "Another Monster". It's not written by Urasawa, but rather by someone else (I can't recall his name, sorry about that), and it's based on Monster. I believe it contains some more interesting background info, this way giving the Monster universe a bit more depth (as if it wasn't deep enough already, haha). If I remember correctly it gives some more details on how Johan became the monster he is. So, yeah, it won't provide you with any closure as to what happened after the ending in episode 74, but you should still definitely give it a read. I'm sure going to! :)
I read somewhere that the whole point, besides Johan's regret, was his lack of identity. I wish I could find the post where I read this. It seemed so logical to me. So, after Johan discovers his name and runs from the hospital, I believe he wouldn't be the same as before, because now he has a name. He isn't a nameless monster anymore. He has a name, he exists. He can feel connected to other people, 'cause now he exists in this world.
You're losing your memory now You're losing your memory now You're losing your memory now You're losing your memory, now Call all your friends And tell them you're never coming back Cause this is the end Pretend that you want it Don't react The damage is done The police are coming too slow now I would have died I would have loved you all my life You're losing your memory now You're losing your memory now You're losing your memory now You're losing your memory, now Where have you gone, The beach is so cold in winter here And where have I gone, I wake in Montauk with you near Remember the day Cause this is what dreams should always be I just want to stay I just want to keep this dream in me You're losing your memory now You're losing your memory now You're losing…
Oh i suppose if Johan came to the prison he would not get death penalty or life imprisonment because he killed some people as child. Johan was little and mad child and in the German Criminal code there are some tips (§ 19. Insanity baby Insane person who in the commission of the act has not yet reached the age of fourteen. § 20. Insanity due to mental disorders Without Guilt acts who in the commission of the act, as a result of morbid mental disorders, deep disorders of consciousness, dementia or other severe mental abnormalities, unable to recognize the unlawfulness of the act or act with the consciousness of their illegality. § 21. Reduced sanity If - for one of the specified in § 20 of the reasons - the ability of a person to recognize the unlawfulness of the act or to act in accordance with this has been significantly reduced in the commission of the act, the punishment under para. 1, § 49, it can be mitigated.) What is more when Johan came in 511 he do not kill anybody: police never can prove that he was initiator. Then Johan just manipulate people and they are serial killers not Johan.(. § 25. Executions (1) As a performer he is punished, who commits a criminal offense by himself or by another.) in that rainy city Johan do not kill the main villain was Roberto and Runge and police will blame dead Roberto not Johan to sum it up Johan will get maximum 15 years in prison:D But actually he has Dissociative identity disorder (poor Johan) - and that is another mitigating circumstance.. so 10 years or less his punishment bravo criminal code!
he could just say 2 words and make all the criminals kill temself with the police and escape, and a guy like johan would have been a subject for experiments, and its explained that johan lived a normal life after monster, thats a lot of writing too

You're losing your memory now
You're losing your memory now
You're losing your memory now
You're losing your memory, now
Call all your friends
And tell them you're never coming back
Cause this is the end
Pretend that you want it
Don't react
The damage is done
The police are coming too slow now
I would have died
I would have loved you all my life
You're losing your memory now
You're losing your memory now
You're losing your memory now
You're losing your memory, now
Where have you gone,
The beach is so cold in winter here
And where have I gone,
I wake in Montauk with you near
Remember the day
Cause this is what dreams should always be
I just want to stay
I just want to keep this dream in me
You're losing your memory now
You're losing your memory now
You're losing…
Thank you!

Crappy choice of music for an awesome anime... what a shame
