Here is a short video of Tiza’s first day with a saddle. I’m now introducing the tack while still clarifying my ground work. Her mind is ready for the added pressure from the trust-building ground work we’ve done together up until this point.
This is an old western saddle that I throw on for added weight and noise at this stage. All the movement of a western saddle is an extra benefit as well! I will use this for my first handful of rides for body insurance 😜 They're great and all, but man am I thankful to slip back into my comfy dressage saddle when it’s time!
She handled the saddle very well. Tiza is a 4 year old Andalusian mare. As you can see the girth and far stirrup fell harder than I intended on her far side. Her reaction showed some fear, but also a lot of trust. There wasn’t much of a mental shift for her meeting the saddle for the first time. Physically, she got way heavier on her feet 😂 I’m looking forward to seeing how she adjusts to a life under saddle. I’m impressed with her willingness to adapt and figure things out with me. She’s very smart. It’s all about capturing her focus right now without force. It’s not about being loud and “desensitizing”, but rather drawing her mind towards me with quietness and timing in order to set intention to her feet.
