Professor Grewbeard That would be awesome! I wonder if it will be like Nao, Pepper, Romeo, or somthing totally different. I also know that Sphero is working on a consumer robot too that is supposed to be released in 2018. I'm looking forward to see what they come up with.

Professor Grewbeard I am so excited about this. I actually applied to work at that Sphero startup and will hopefully hear back soon. I have 5 aibos and love robots that I can customize. It's been too long since any consumer robots that aren't made as kid toys have been on the market. My aibos are all over 15 years old and still cost me a few hundred a piece.
Kind of a combination of both. If you go over to softbanks free developer kit and documentation take a look at what I use for Nao to speak. Its called Dialog. Its based on rules, proposals, and you can add vision cues etc. I have a basic idea of what he will say but I add a lot of random choices etc so it feels more real to me. So basically programmed but with him able to choose what to say
I was looking at NAO closely and noticed he has rubberized fingertips. Do they come stock or is he modded? And either way, have you tried to get NAO to trigger the touch screen on a mobile device?

I should probably make a video about it, but some is scripted some is not. He has a huge verbal database I and Aldebaran made called Dialog. He uses rules, proposals, vision recognition etc to speak. So best answer about talking is some is his own some is scripted. As for AI there really has yet to be a robot that can totally do anything without programming. Until quantum computers come, were still on the binary 1's and 0's program. Hope that helps

He comes programmed with something called basic awareness which helps a lot, but yes still lot of programming he doesnt learn new stuff on his own

If you’re interested they did a test using an nao robot where it learnt from itself. Was the dumb pill test. Google it.
