    What a woman cutting out the fabric with a baby on you’re back. Beautiful corset I’m waiting for a pattern to make my first corset I’ve brought all the stuff but the pattern is out of stock I wish the would have told me that when I ordered oh well. I want to make a 1860s outfit so all under clothes, crinoline and dress it might take me a few years but I’m good with that. Happy new year 🥳

    I just got this book, and made paper pattern mockups of each pattern, and this one looked extremely weird in the paper mockup.
    Its blocky in the body, with massive bust cups, so it's neat to see it actually reconstructed in fabric.

    • @KatherineSewing
      @KatherineSewing  2 роки тому +2

      That's great, good for you! Yes, the body of the original pattern is quite blocky. One of the things I changed in my draft of the pattern. Good luck with your future projects! ☺️

    Gorgeous! Thanks so much for this video. I've been wanting to make this corset for years, ever since I first saw it in the book - but it's intimidating, and I couldn't quite understand the pattern. This has helped immensely, though I have to say all that cording may be a bit too much for my current skill level. Definitely still a goal of mine.

    • @KatherineSewing
      @KatherineSewing  2 роки тому +1

    I personally only use spiral steel boning because I don't like plastic and avoid it everywhere I can and spiral steel is just incredibly flexible and even bends sideways which is really useful with some patterns
    I even use it around the eyeleds because I feel like it makes the corset just a little bit more adjustable

    • @KatherineSewing

    Absolutely stunning, I totally agree about the bust fit and shaping, it adds so much to this corset, and the cording there is so striking.

    Gorgeous corset. Something that is on my wish list.
    I'm making something simple. Viking linen dress. Hand sewn using later period sewing techniques. Its a UFO project that was started 5 years ago. I've now got to make a lot of changes to the already cut pieces as life things have changed. but its coming along. all short seams are now sewn (shoulder and sleeve) just got to shorten hem and recut side gores and sew them in.

    • @KatherineSewing
      @KatherineSewing  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Good for you for not only trying something so unique, but for coming back to an unfinished project five years later! 💕 Best of luck 🥰

  • @susanhawthorne5687
    @susanhawthorne5687 Рік тому

    This is amazing. Just discovered you, Katherine!
    You gave me some positive reinforcement since I've been marking the seam and not the cut line since almost when I started sewing. The engineer in me can't understand anything else. Generally (normal sewing) I'll do a stay stitch on all non-hem edges before cutting out the pieces. Then I can line up the stay stitches with my fingers.
    I'll be making a Victorian corset and signing up for the class. My main goal is breast support so I plan on making bust area hit a little higher on me than strictly Victorian. Still early in the process though.

    • @KatherineSewing
      @KatherineSewing  Рік тому

      Thanks for your comment Susan! This is so exciting! That makes so much sense about the stay stitching technique and sounds ultra-accurate. Looking forward to working with you in the corset making course! 😍

  • @DOSBoxMom
    @DOSBoxMom 7 місяців тому

    I can see where you would want to have the cords for cording in the same type of fiber as either the inside or outside layers of the corset, so that the cords would respond to any required cleaning of the corset the same way as the fabric. (For example, you wouldn't want to use non-superwash wool yarn for cording, as it would shrink. Cotton yarn for cording with a cotton inside layer of the corset would work fine, though.)

    Getting ready to make my fourth corset (1890's this time), so I think I'm going to take the plunge and use coutil this time! So I'm doing a lot of research before this one. 😅 I also saw this method awhile back of taking a cheap, form fitting tank top and using masking tape allllll over it to get your own body shape, and making a corset pattern from that, so I will also be trying that method. I'm trying to make sure it's fairly historically accurate too, particularly in it's shape.
    My real question is: you can use yarn as cording?! I haven't corded a corset before, and I'm going to try it with this one. Is there a big shape/sturdiness difference between using yarn vs. "proper" cording?
    Anyway, that corset is gorgeous!
