SNES "Pixel-Perfect" Mode on the 3DS - Visual Demonstration

- In case anyone was wondering what this setting does, here it is in action.
Some technical details: SNES games have a resolution of 256x224. If you use a calculator, you'll notice that the ratio is actually narrower than the 4:3 format used by old televisions - it's more like 1.14:1. I believe the games were designed to be stretched back out to 4:3 since they would show up that way on people's TVs - but in the case of emulation, stretching it out like that just ends up blurring the screen a bit. (Let's face it, CRT TVs aren't that great to begin with, you wouldn't even notice!)
So basically, this setting toggles between a stretched-out mode mimicking what you would see on your 1991 television versus actually displaying the pixels natively. Thankfully, there isn't an option to stretch it to the full 16:9 of the top screen.
I wish pixel perfect mode were a standard in every mass consumption electronics. Why can't we play retro consoles with the native resolutions on HDTV? I would not mind the smaller screen given the higher visual fidelity.
if we played for example 720p on an 1440p, then there would be blur
@@zux128 then remove space on the screen. can you not read?
And the regular 3ds can't do this because.....?
Shenanigans nintendo.... Shenanigans!
have you ever seen the New 3DS XL being hacked to use match the old 3DS' specs? The old 3DS makes the game super laggy.
I really wish the NES games had pixel perfect mode as well. However, I do like the 4:3 mode better overall I think. With the filter and the NTSC aspect ratio, it's closer to playing a actual Snes on a CRT. :)
+Shoga san Yeah, I agree. Seems all the other VC stuff has that option - Game Boy/GBC lets you press start at boot to get them native sized, as does Game Gear. Which makes NES the only VC released on 3DS that doesn't have that option. (Save for GBA, but those ones were "special" anyway and still haven't been released officially)
DRFInPerson
Maybe they will eventually release GBA as 'new' 3DS VC exclusives now.
Possible, but I doubt it. They clearly run on the original 3DS (whereas SNES games don't, people have tried and it lags horribly and won't run at full speed) - if anything they'd release them for both.
But considering they've already released a bunch of GBA (AND DS!) for the Wii U, I'm assuming that's the direction they'll continue :/
DRFInPerson
Yeah, your probably right. If they run properly on the new 3ds though, I would think it would be a more profitable and overall logical decision to release them on it. I mean after all, it is a handheld! I'm just happy to have snes though. As far as DS goes, I'd rather just buy the hard copies anyway. Plus, I don't own a Wii U so.
On a side note. I can't wait to have official copies of ALTTP and Super Metroid! Yay! =D
Lol, I'm such a sucker. Nintendo makes big bucks of idiots like myself. =P
you dont want to use pixel perfect, it makes the image narrower and snes image was meant for 4:3 aspect ratio stretched
Thanks for the explanation! So pixel perfect is what is on the SNES cartridge, but the non pixel perfect was what I would actually see displayed on those older televisions?
Ritaku Some devs. Devs were unaware that 8:7 existed. Nintendo to my knowledge didn’t narrow game sprites so they would look better on 4:3
i can't find pixel perfect mode on the new nintendo 2DS XL, anyone know where i can find this?
Before starting the game, hold SELECT, then start the game while still holding select. Pixel perfect mode is then turned on.
@@major-minor thanks

Thankfully there "isn't" an option to stretch to fullscreen? I feel the opposite, I stretch all my games to fullscreen (and old TV shows to widescreen). Unplayable for me and people like me any other way. They should at least give us the option
Gross. Preserving aspect ratios is the only valid option.
I absolutely love pixel perfect mode. I like it even better than the CRT display, and I like the CRT display a lot better than how it looks when you hook up a SNES to an HD LCD/LED TV. I really wish Nintendo would release all of the SNES games that are on the Wii U VC on the N3DS VC, or at least all of the ones that it's possible to emulate if there are some that aren't.
Thank you, they changed the name for this so I couldn’t find it and the games don’t look great with the stretch
I have a New 3DS XL, but I must've installed a SNES emulator while getting CFW 😅 I don't have that screen and Super Mario World is stuck in widescreen which makes it very hard to read the text 😣
lol i know its been 3 years but you just gotta install the cia snes games
Is there a way to zoom in??
What's the point of this mode though?
Probably for people who prefer their screen not to be stretched
Actually, the pixel perfect mode is stretched, since it's not 4:3 aspect ratio like a real snes on a real 4:3 TV would be.
Billy Bong Except you’re wrong. The SNES outputs at a native 8:7 aspect ratio.
The console can't even resize all the image? well, sorry but i don't like it at all. But thanks for your explanation.
im waiting until i can get cfw for free
I was looking for this, thank you!
Thank you!
Im getting earthbound and super mario world
+Jonathan Villalta I'm getting Earthbound today!
Earthbound stinks.
I've read somewhere that SNES can also output 240p (which would fill the black spaces on top and bottom) but it only concerns a few games. I'll try to get more info about this :)
SNES actually runs 240p in every game. A real SNES doesn't run a single game with black bars on the top and bottom, like it does on the wiiu or 3ds.
But I'm sure there will be someone along to tell us this is "more accurate", even in any practical and meaninful sense it's less accurate.
Billy Bong
Well actually, I've done some research and while NES generally outputs 240p (depends on the game), SNES outputs 224p, hence the little black bars above and below the screen on N3DS' SNES VC since the screen is 240p.
Default plays the game in 4:3 format like it used to do on CRT screens, but the original resolution option removes the 4:3 stretch and sisplays the exact 256x224 pixels resolution, which is actually 8:7.
A few games like Street Fighter II (& Turbo/Super) also have extra black bars but that's normal.
But regardless of this, a real snes doesn't have black bars top and bottom, unless it's a PAL SNES 50hz, or street fighter (that was because they scaled the sprites down etc).
There really is no reason for them to have left those black bars in there. It should be zoomed in. It's pretty unforgivable imo, especially on such a small screen. They could simply have put the black bars in on 'pixel perfect' mode
is there a setting somewhere to zoom in?
Magik arp
No, you'd have to use another SNES emulator like snes 9x or blargsnes, since nintendo could't be bothered to allow us to run real fullscreen
Thanks for this, any way to fill the 3DS screen and stretch it for no Borders?
+thestr8jacket1 No, unfortunately not. Only on Game Gear can you do that, but it looks pretty bad when stretched that far Imo. Lol
+thestr8jacket1 Right, what Shoga san said. Not sure why you would want to stretch it though, that looks ugly. I'm actually glad you can't...
Satan is preparing a nice comfy spot in the tenth circle of hell for you
should have been full screen...smh
yes like they did on big tvs? as least give us the option
I don't gave any shit about the perfect pixel mode, hahaha,am mean who cares.
