Some additions on NATO (by a Dutch guy):
- this talk of helping Putin, has lead to the European members of Nato working on strategies how that future would be. Including the idea that the US would de facto be an enemy.
- the original treaty said nothing about money. Wouldn't have worked anyway; NATO begin close after ww2; most countries were still half destroyed. The 2% or so agreement came much later.
- looking at the treaty it is obvious that the US is at least "first among equals" again makes sense looking at history.
- this has lead to some conflicting messaging, on the one hand the US wants the partners to contribute more, on the other hand, the US want so continue being a bit "more equal" than the others.
- that and the insane amount of spending on American military has made some of the partners a bit too relaxed.
- the us is also the head administration of NATO. If a partners wants to leave they have to inform the US , wait a year, and then can the US share that with the partners. Which begs the question how the US would leave NATO.
And one more question: I'm no military guy but wouldn't withdrawing all military from all bases around the world not create a huge problem for the US.? Where do you house those people, what will they do, become civilian? And then what?
