I remember the former Fox News goon they had on as a moderator infinitely shouting no over and over again to try to rein in Trump to no avail. The late night shows did a highlight reel of him trying and failing to get Trump to shut up. The fact that he couldn't even play by such basic rules should have been enough of a reason to show why he was an unsuitable candidate. But of course that's ended up being his appeal instead.

It's the interruptions that bothered me, bully tactics. When he creeped around stage behind Hillary I remember cringing too.
I think they need microphones that shut off automatically when time is over, and stay off until their next allotted time to speak. No going overtime and no interrupting.
He's got a huge case of grandiosity. Since he's the greatest, smartest, most capable, and he tries to boost it by calling them the opposite.
That really riled me.
That's when I knew he was an evil person.
I have to confess to tuning out of politics for a long time prior to that, though I continued to vote, always Democratic, as the even then the Republicans were bad news. I was blissfully unaware though of the orange scumbag, aside from the birtherism BS a few years earlier, and I had skipped the whole Republican primary circus. I also much of my news then from the radio, usually NPR, etc. I listening to the first debate during a lengthy commute, and I was stunned by first the scumbag's ridiculous heavy breathing, and then by his rude interjections of "Wrong!" in that annoying voice that we've come to revile. Even if his claims were NOT distortions and his policies NOT destructive, his whole manner was absolutely repellent.

The presidential debates have been largely useless up until now. It would be a real shock if trump ultimately didn't chicken out.

I believe they are taken way out of proportion by many viewers who are less diligent in their approach to voting. A minor gaff or a "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy" bell ringer (Lloyd Bentson to Dan Quayle in the 1988 VP debate) are grossly over-inflated in terms of importance to determining the next leader(s) of the day. Presidents do not run the nation like a McDonalds manager runs his hamburger grill, in two minute McSessions. Neither does a president operate alone when declaring policy. He has the whole civil service at his disposal and elected officials to aid him.
I believe the debates have some merit though I can't help but think that their cessation would be better for the nation. It would give voters one less excuse to put way too much stock into the candidate who comes across as the more charismatic or attractive personage instead of doing their homework on what the politician is really about. (BTW, I recommend interested readers check out Lawrence O'Donnel on MSNBC for his take on presidential debates - which I have represented here)

It is frustrating when any candidate interruptes during a debate or continues to speak when their allotted time is up. Good for Biden to bring this up. Also if there is no audience at the debates, Trump will be at a disadvantage. I believe he feeds off of the crowds.

Canadian here... If Trump backs out, then Biden should get the full programs time slot to answer questions unfettered and in as much detail as he wishes, and showcase his achievements of the previous three years. There should be a ticker type banner "a Chryon" at the bottom of the screen saying "Trump is a no show".
Biden should come out with a statement saying some how, some way, trump will chicken out of debating. When trump does, Biden should call him out for it. Also, part of the debate should be solely on policy, successes, failures, and what they will implement during their term. Also, I love the mic cut-off decision.

The debates will likely make no difference to voters who have been paying attention.

CNN's townhall with Trump and Caitlan Collins was a DISASTER. With the exception of Briana Keilar, CNN's current anchors are not up to the challenge of moderating a Presidential debate and maintaining order that these debates deserve. Even Chris Wallace was ineffective as moderator in the 2020 debate.
I suspect that the choice of moderator could be a deciding factor (or one of the major ones) in whether this debate ever happens. Trump will never agree to anyone even marginally approaching unbiased. In his mind, anyone with even a shred of nuance in their approach will be automatically labeled as corrupt.
Yeah, but I deeply enjoyed Wallace's obvious humiliation as he tried and failed to rein in Trump after he carried water for him for so many years.
I'll admit it. I have a serious hate on for Wallace after I saw him show up on Colbert's show and tried to spread Trump talking points and Colbert was ready with printouts that showed what he was saying was false. Wallace has tried to build this reputation as one of the real news people from the network, but he's just another partisan hack. He deserved every bit of humiliation he got on that stage by the man he sacrificed his reputation for.
And we know he WON'T show up. He'll have his usual lame excuses.
