  • In this video from a recent Beck Institute Workshop, Dr. Aaron Beck discusses how the cognitive model can be applied to various psychiatric disorders and psychological problems. Dr. Beck provides an example of a client with several problems including back pain, panic attacks, generalized anxiety, and depression to illustrate how the cognitive model is used to inform case formulation.

      hes talking about how variables relate to eachother so together they contitute the entire dinamic of the case problem. Search for clinical pathogenesis map, its a way to grafically show this. There you can see how a variable is understood to be the cause of a synthom or a consecuence in the life of the pacient/client. In this video he says that his depression is a consecuence of the belief that he wont get well from his panic attacks. So, from seeing this in the pathogenesis map, you understand that treating the panic attacks and lowering their appearance he stops believing he wont get well, and so, now he doesnt have depression or oanic attacks

    I respect Dr Beck as a fellow researcher/academic, but I really had a hard time listening to this. People should pick up his books to discover his wonder contributions and his emphasis on the empirical method. However, they should also guard against falling into overly simplistic thinking after reading him.
