Silent Hill itself is a character and nailing it down to a rigid canon or what fans call "the main storyline" when they refer to the cult plot is nothing less than killing it because it kills the experience of that character as something that is essentially unknowable. It would be like if someone said they had the original drawings that Rorschach inkblots are based off of. Silent Hill can't be clarified. The fans who wanted that, however wrong they were, were greater in number.
I really do believe this was one of the greatest plot twists I've ever seen. And the way the game psychologically analyzed you, as a player... and it was scarily correct. Fantastic game. Really under rated and a gem of a game. Ending hit me like a train ;-;
This is still my fav SH game, I liked even more than SH2. Two things I feel you glossed over: Those shadow figures are not just some kid, they're cheryl. Also the world freezing isn't random, but happens at very specific times. They happen every time Harry gets closer to learning the truth and cheryl's subconscious begins to fight back.

They probably re-upped it with a narrator who doesn't have an accent. The original narrator had a russian accent, some minor mistakes yet also a very soothing voice and nice melody and pace. Well done, by both narrators and whoever participated as well! Thanks.
It's a great spin-off. I really love the twisted storyline and the changes that happen depending of your gameplay and behaviour. I can't wait to see Downpour explanation.

While I do not consider this game as a true SH game I still found it highly interesting. Also Hell Frozen Rain, When you are gone and the Always on my mind cover are among my favorite SH songs.
The only problem with Siren is that there are only two games, and the second is literally a “Hollywood Americanization” of the first (Director’s words, not mine.) But totally for Fatal Frame.

at first I didnt like the changes made but after an hour of playing I started to enjoy it. Like the freezing and at times the creatures did unnerve me but for the most part it felt tragic, left me feeling sad and depressed for the characters. In the end I had a great time playing it. And great video!
That game was amazing . I totally still feel the end to heart , i got the ending where cheryl breaks the fourth wall and looks at you saying i miss you daddy , good lord i was like i miss you too honey 😢 , it was like i was harry mason . Great game man .
It is an interesting experimental project but it is neither a remake nor a true Silent Hill game though it does manage to mess with the players head in a way that the previous games don't do because it adapts to the players actions and responses as well as intentionally distorting the original game's story to make us scratch out heads trying to figure out why it doesn't match up to what we know happened. I also thought it was strange that the characters we remember from the first game don't resemble the version of themselves we saw in the first game. Cybil being blonde originally but now is only blonde if sexualized for example. Ironically Brunette Cybil really resembles the main detective of Law & Order SVU. This game completely reinvents Daliah both in her appearance and her character given that she was originally the mother of Alessa, not Cheryl even though Cheryl is part of Alessa which maybe that is what they are talking about with Daliah and Harry getting divorced and she feels torn apart by it. Lisa is still Lisa though now it is made to look like there was more going on between them. Heather almost seems to take the place of the appearances of Alessa in the first game despite the only thing they have in common is the dark hair color. She seems to exist purely to make us feel more out of place in what should be a familiar game world. The fog seems replaced by darkness and the disturbing environments from earlier games are replaced by the "frozen" world which I'm guessing is the only part remaining from the original project. The first game was an interesting project in itself which delved into both supernatural and psychological horror rather than relying on jump scares. The second game used the same setting to tell a different story. The third game revisited the original narrative from a new perspective.The Room took a very different look at the game formula by making the feeling of claustrophobia more apparent. Origins sought to serve as a prequel to SH1 by setting up the events of that game. Homecoming attempted to tell us a new story unrelated to Alessa/Cheryl while expanding on the cult aspect and its long reaching implications in this way drawing inspiration from the Room and attempting to tell a mostly unrelated story like SH2. Shattered Memories tells us more about ourselves than it does about Silent Hill and for the most part does this by using our expectations against us. In hind sight Silent Hill 2 is the only one that does not deal with the cult that lurks in Silent Hill of the 1st 4.The Room while both giving us a look at the reach of Silent Hill's mysterious nature also serves to work Silent Hill 2 into the greater narrative of the series by taking the name of a character that only appeared 2 times and telling us about his character and his connection to the cult of Silent Hill. It feels less like a true sequel and a rushed attempt to retcon SH2 into the greater Silent Hill continuity. It too may have originally started out as a different game from the finished project. Origins sticks closer to the story of the original game than the sequel did, while Homecoming follows up on the idea of the Room that the reach of Silent Hill is not limited to the city limits. I do wish that more original stories like SH2 had been made to tell how it reacts to different people but even it was retconned into the lore by the Room.

Being trapped in a sinking car and drowning was a personal phobia of mine so that was the single scariest moment for me in the entire Silent Hill series. I remember the first time I played I finished that scene drenched head to toe in sweat. But I do understand how the game would be considered much less scary than the other entries.

Now I want to play this game even more. Me and horror games don't mesh together very well. They stay with me a long time and because of that, I haven't been able to play through a single Silent Hill game because they just end up terrifying me, making it hard to breath and unwilling to be alone. But this game, this does not look as 'suffocating' to me so to say, and I really like the whole psychiatric approach to the story. Hell, I think it makes it even better than the " _Ye olde God resurrecth to bringeth thine salvation 'ere paradise doth town_ " that the first game was. Don't get me wrong though, I do like the first game. I just find this story to be far better. Also, I am one of those who have gone, and recently have gotten a new shrink to talk to so yeah. I guess there's a bit of related feelings there as well. Waiting patiently for the Downpour review now ~
MASTERPIECE. I teared up when I finished this game, it wasn't scary at 100%, but was challenging, discover all the answers transports you to a very shook scene.
You can very much sense the absence of the body temperature mechanics, but I think that wound up being a good thing. The atmosphere was still so spot on that I was desperate to get my character to warmth no matter how many times I reminded myself there was no body temp meter. It really lent itself to the feelings of leading a ghostly, false reality.

Not sure if you're willing to take suggestions, but after Silent Hill, my favorite horror series has always been Fatal Frame/Project 0 and my favourite horror game of all time (which sadly never got a series) is Kuon. Would love to see someone of your skill level tackle them.
It is about time a legitimate and knowledgeable review has emerged. I have been a SH fan, through the various incarnations and though this entry was very different, that is what made it unique, a new cerebral twist on the carnal nature of the original. I occasionally reply this title, especially during the winter side of the year, just for continuity, and I always find something a little different, or from a new perspective. The truth is, this runs the gamut of all forms of media for the most part, it is extremely difficult to recapture the same level of greatness that a original concept had, the timing, the subject matter, the social relatability, its all of those small nuances that work so brilliantly at the time, 'in' that time, this is where the word nostalgia lives. The only way time lets us move is forward, and only in our minds, does what we perceived as the experience of that shining moment never loses its radiance. Memories change every time you isolate them to scrutiny, just as a crystal heirloom, taken out from time to time to show to a gathering of friends, but eventually, the one time to many occurs, leaving crystal just as memories...shattered! d>_0b *respect for at least trying something new!!
I LOVED the concept of this game when I first played it. A game that "plays you as much as you play it". It takes Silent Hill, a very supernaturally-grounded plot, and twists it on itself, similar to what Silent Hill 2 did IMO. They take the concept of a town changing to a horrible version of itself and then instead of saying it was a cult or a god, it's either because of your actions or like this game where it's all in your head. I thought the psychologist's take was brilliant. Shattered Memories could have spawned more sequels had it been more commercially successful but unlike P.T., I'm glad we at least had this as a full game and we can fond over some not so shattered memories ourselves.
Shattered Memories will always be the most underrated and under appreciated games in my opinion. Just how someone can look at how deep this game is and not absolutely love it is wild to me. I get it's not team silent, but if we only judge silent Hill games on if they are made by team silent or not, we'll never be happy.
Silent Hill 3 is my personal favourite, and I know Silent Hill 2 is the best game in the series, but Shattered Memories was the first I ever fully played through, and I couldn’t tell you how many times I had done so. I probably even missed some dialogue and phone numbers, there was just that much to it. But what this game truly got right was the feeling of moving through an abandoned town, with a phenomenal soundtrack that made doing so feel either cosy as hell or chilling and isolated, as it needed. This is the vision of Silent Hill I would most like to experience in real life, not because it’s relatively safe, but because it toed the line between psychological journey and urban exploration better than any other.
I know it isn't traditional Silent Hill, but I absolutely love the atmosphere and mechanics the devs put into this game as part of a storytelling adventure.

Really great quality content video. I've never play the game SHSM myself, but this seems to be one of kind game. Such a unique plots & game design that I am pretty sure no video games (that I know of) have the same core design in storytelling such as this game. It would be very lovely if there is a remastered or remake of this (especially with a more cinematic approach of the whole game). Too bad, I don't see any possibility of remastered or remake happening with Konami as of now. Also, my only gripe with this game seems to be the core gameplay itself with the running most of the time. It should've been more varied maybe with stealth elements, melee weaponry, & monster bosses (that designs or order may change depending on psychological stats).
Thanks for taking so much time going through the games and giving your opinions (and digging up little known facts in some cases). I'd love to see you do some other game series, such as System Shock/Bioshock, Half Life, and Resident Evil (plenty of stinkers there)

Although I work as a translator now and add not so much information (which will be different in the last episode of SH "history") I'll be definitely doing my own analysis on different games and series. I appreciate your support and such kind words! :) Basically, I've already described my personal opinion in videos, but I don't mind doing it here. The very first game was a blast, since a lot of developers had to their work in 3D. Besides the creators used the limitations of PS1 with elegance and turned it into a part of general atmosphere. The second game is a masterpiece in terms of the plot, analysis of players' actions (which was possibly used after in Shattered Memories). The third game is good and finished the story that was told in the first game. The forth one has it's own atmosphere and new game mechanics, but it's not clearly a Silent Hill game. If the name was changed to...Kamakura horror, for example nothing would have changed. Origins, in my opinion is a try to show that developers like psp (even if they don't) and show it as a competitive console on the market. Still, the developers tried to make another decent Silent Hill game, and partly they managed to do that. Homecoming is...fine. And as I've already said it's a fine horror game, but a really bad Silent Hill. Yes, the industry changes, so mechanics should change as well, but the developers tried to invent a wheel when they had everything they needed. Shattered Memories is good. It has the variety to play this game multiple times, but it's rather short and has some unnecessary items. Still the psycho analysis was really exciting. But this feature was already used in SH2 where the game also collected the information about a player, but it Shattered Memories it evolved though. Still, with all these flaws I liked this game, and especially music and the suspense. After completing the game for the first time you are able to look at everything at another perspective and that is good :)

I try countless times to get it to work on pc but I manage to use a ps2 emulator, yeah some people tell me that am a noob because I haven't play the second one but I just saved it for the end, and so far I will like to say that the room it's my favorite, I know it's weird and I know I'm not the majority on this one but as a said early I think the games where the town is like a state of being instead of a cursed place makes it even more personal and terrifying simply because It you get involde much more in the characters fears that they become your fears, anyway so far I had absuly enjoyed all of them especially 4,3,SM and Downpour, Its a shame for the cancellation of silent hills so I guess the second one will be my last ride through the town but if the reviews are right then I'm in for quite a trip. Damnit. Damnit. I was such a moron as a kid. I am pretty sure I have this game on the Wii but had already played the pirated version on the PSP, and so wasn't too excited for it, and don't think i replayed much. All I was able to distinguish in my 2 playthroughs was the house changing and that's it. Of course cuz I wasnt paying attention at all. Will definitely play it again if I get a chance.

I feel like every review of this game overlooks how immersive the controls for the Wii were. Running by pumping your arms in a thriller game is *intense* And the wheelchair level. Whooooo dang. Probably not dope with standard controller, but super intense on the Wii.

The second game used the same setting to tell a different story. Origins sought to serve as a prequel to SH1 by setting up the events of that game. Homecoming attempted to tell us a new story unrelated to Alessa/Cheryl while expanding on the cult aspect and its long reaching implications in this way drawing inspiration from the Room and attempting to tell a mostly unrelated story like SH2. Shattered Memories tells us more about ourselves than it does about Silent Hill and for the most part does this by using our expectations against us.
In hind sight Silent Hill 2 is the only one that does not deal with the cult that lurks in Silent Hill of the 1st 4.The Room while both giving us a look at the reach of Silent Hill's mysterious nature also serves to work Silent Hill 2 into the greater narrative of the series by taking the name of a character that only appeared 2 times and telling us about his character and his connection to the cult of Silent Hill. It feels less like a true sequel and a rushed attempt to retcon SH2 into the greater Silent Hill continuity. It too may have originally started out as a different game from the finished project. Origins sticks closer to the story of the original game than the sequel did, while Homecoming follows up on the idea of the Room that the reach of Silent Hill is not limited to the city limits. I do wish that more original stories like SH2 had been made to tell how it reacts to different people but even it was retconned into the lore by the Room.

Being trapped in a sinking car and drowning was a personal phobia of mine so that was the single scariest moment for me in the entire Silent Hill series. I remember the first time I played I finished that scene drenched head to toe in sweat. But I do understand how the game would be considered much less scary than the other entries.

I think this game never needed to be a Silent Hill game. It could have easily been its own original IP. I think there would have been a lot more freedom for it if that was the case. It was still pretty good regardless.
This pile of shit was only made as a cashgrab. It is not canon and does not fit into the series in any way. They ruined every character they "reinvented" nothing about this game carries the atmosphere or creativity of the real Team Silent games. Even Downpour is better than this horseshit.

Me and horror games don't mesh together very well. They stay with me a long time and because of that, I haven't been able to play through a single Silent Hill game because they just end up terrifying me, making it hard to breath and unwilling to be alone. But this game, this does not look as 'suffocating' to me so to say, and I really like the whole psychiatric approach to the story. Hell, I think it makes it even better than the " _Ye olde God resurrecth to bringeth thine salvation 'ere paradise doth town_ " that the first game was. Don't get me wrong though, I do like the first game. I just find this story to be far better.
Also, I am one of those who have gone, and recently have gotten a new shrink to talk to so yeah. I guess there's a bit of related feelings there as well.

I teared up when I finished this game, it wasn't scary at 100%, but was challenging, discover all the answers transports you to a very shook scene.
Far from a masterpiece. Very far from it.
You can very much sense the absence of the body temperature mechanics, but I think that wound up being a good thing. The atmosphere was still so spot on that I was desperate to get my character to warmth no matter how many times I reminded myself there was no body temp meter.
It really lent itself to the feelings of leading a ghostly, false reality.

Still an underrated Silent Hill game ever, as well as my personal favorite
It is about time a legitimate and knowledgeable review has emerged. I have been a SH fan, through the various incarnations and though this entry was very different, that is what made it unique, a new cerebral twist on the carnal nature of the original. I occasionally reply this title, especially during the winter side of the year, just for continuity, and I always find something a little different, or from a new perspective. The truth is, this runs the gamut of all forms of media for the most part, it is extremely difficult to recapture the same level of greatness that a original concept had, the timing, the subject matter, the social relatability, its all of those small nuances that work so brilliantly at the time, 'in' that time, this is where the word nostalgia lives. The only way time lets us move is forward, and only in our minds, does what we perceived as the experience of that shining moment never loses its radiance. Memories change every time you isolate them to scrutiny, just as a crystal heirloom, taken out from time to time to show to a gathering of friends, but eventually, the one time to many occurs, leaving crystal just as memories...shattered! d>_0b *respect for at least trying something new!!
This game had an amazing soundtrack! I used to play this on my PSP, sitting in a cold, dark room, taking in the sounds through headphones.
I LOVED the concept of this game when I first played it. A game that "plays you as much as you play it". It takes Silent Hill, a very supernaturally-grounded plot, and twists it on itself, similar to what Silent Hill 2 did IMO. They take the concept of a town changing to a horrible version of itself and then instead of saying it was a cult or a god, it's either because of your actions or like this game where it's all in your head. I thought the psychologist's take was brilliant. Shattered Memories could have spawned more sequels had it been more commercially successful but unlike P.T., I'm glad we at least had this as a full game and we can fond over some not so shattered memories ourselves.

Shattered Memories will always be the most underrated and under appreciated games in my opinion. Just how someone can look at how deep this game is and not absolutely love it is wild to me. I get it's not team silent, but if we only judge silent Hill games on if they are made by team silent or not, we'll never be happy.

Silent Hill 3 is my personal favourite, and I know Silent Hill 2 is the best game in the series, but Shattered Memories was the first I ever fully played through, and I couldn’t tell you how many times I had done so. I probably even missed some dialogue and phone numbers, there was just that much to it.
But what this game truly got right was the feeling of moving through an abandoned town, with a phenomenal soundtrack that made doing so feel either cosy as hell or chilling and isolated, as it needed. This is the vision of Silent Hill I would most like to experience in real life, not because it’s relatively safe, but because it toed the line between psychological journey and urban exploration better than any other.
I know it isn't traditional Silent Hill, but I absolutely love the atmosphere and mechanics the devs put into this game as part of a storytelling adventure.

Really great quality content video. I've never play the game SHSM myself, but this seems to be one of kind game. Such a unique plots & game design that I am pretty sure no video games (that I know of) have the same core design in storytelling such as this game. It would be very lovely if there is a remastered or remake of this (especially with a more cinematic approach of the whole game). Too bad, I don't see any possibility of remastered or remake happening with Konami as of now. Also, my only gripe with this game seems to be the core gameplay itself with the running most of the time. It should've been more varied maybe with stealth elements, melee weaponry, & monster bosses (that designs or order may change depending on psychological stats).
Honestly the silent hill franchise is just the best horror franchise in my opinion.
2020 and I'm watching this series for the 2nd time.

Basically, I've already described my personal opinion in videos, but I don't mind doing it here. The very first game was a blast, since a lot of developers had to their work in 3D. Besides the creators used the limitations of PS1 with elegance and turned it into a part of general atmosphere.
The second game is a masterpiece in terms of the plot, analysis of players' actions (which was possibly used after in Shattered Memories).
The third game is good and finished the story that was told in the first game.
The forth one has it's own atmosphere and new game mechanics, but it's not clearly a Silent Hill game. If the name was changed to...Kamakura horror, for example nothing would have changed.
Origins, in my opinion is a try to show that developers like psp (even if they don't) and show it as a competitive console on the market. Still, the developers tried to make another decent Silent Hill game, and partly they managed to do that.
Homecoming is...fine. And as I've already said it's a fine horror game, but a really bad Silent Hill. Yes, the industry changes, so mechanics should change as well, but the developers tried to invent a wheel when they had everything they needed.
Shattered Memories is good. It has the variety to play this game multiple times, but it's rather short and has some unnecessary items. Still the psycho analysis was really exciting. But this feature was already used in SH2 where the game also collected the information about a player, but it Shattered Memories it evolved though. Still, with all these flaws I liked this game, and especially music and the suspense. After completing the game for the first time you are able to look at everything at another perspective and that is good :)

I try countless times to get it to work on pc but I manage to use a ps2 emulator, yeah some people tell me that am a noob because I haven't play the second one but I just saved it for the end, and so far I will like to say that the room it's my favorite, I know it's weird and I know I'm not the majority on this one but as a said early I think the games where the town is like a state of being instead of a cursed place makes it even more personal and terrifying simply because It you get involde much more in the characters fears that they become your fears, anyway so far I had absuly enjoyed all of them especially 4,3,SM and Downpour, Its a shame for the cancellation of silent hills so I guess the second one will be my last ride through the town but if the reviews are right then I'm in for quite a trip. Damnit. Damnit. I was such a moron as a kid. I am pretty sure I have this game on the Wii but had already played the pirated version on the PSP, and so wasn't too excited for it, and don't think i replayed much. All I was able to distinguish in my 2 playthroughs was the house changing and that's it. Of course cuz I wasnt paying attention at all. Will definitely play it again if I get a chance.

I feel like every review of this game overlooks how immersive the controls for the Wii were. Running by pumping your arms in a thriller game is *intense*
And the wheelchair level. Whooooo dang. Probably not dope with standard controller, but super intense on the Wii.
I wish there was option to play through the entire game in the wheelchair. I mean it would have been exhausting but man it would have been cool.
