I'll absolutely check out your cut page video. I need to learn it anyway, and I'm excited the speed editor will work on this! Can't wait for the release! Thanks for this! ☺️
you are welcome. Cut page tutorial is V16 but still VERY relevant.
As someone that primarily edits from the Edit tab, I really hope this is something they plan on adding at some point.
Yeah, I’m getting ready to a short film in 4K from 4K and 6K raw BM files. Plan to finish it off in Prores HQ. Realistically, do you think something like this it is possible?
Nice preview! Thanks for sharing. I'm very excited for the final release!
Wow! Almost sure this is going to make the difference in iPad apps, Thanks for this gift in Cyber week Darren!
I've been working on the ASUS Z13 tablet running on full DR 18.2 and its absolutely fantastic. Pen touch, finger editing, etc. From now on, I'm just going to listen to you.
This looks very impressive, looking forward to it getting a full release. Thanks for sharing.
It works amazingly well on iPAD
Just met you while chatting on another ch. and you answer a lot of questions we had. I had to come and give you a sub. I will definitely watch your videos. Thank you!
nice chatting with you on Patrick Sterlings live stream, yes. Thank you for subscribing! Lots of playlists on my channel which may help you find what you are looking for. Appreciated, All the best, Darren
Thank you so much for this video! I always wanted to edit videos while I travel by train and didn't want to take my laptop with me but an iPad would be lighter and better to take with myself!
Glad it was helpful!
You are a natural teacher Darren, thank you 👍.
THank you. appreciated. darren.
Hi Darren, love watching your videos as I’m new to DaVinci Resolve and you give such a good intro to how to use. Clear, simple and uncluttered without all the usual banal ‘what’s up guy’s’ intro comments that many USA based UA-camrs resort to!, By the way, have you heard that the extra pages, Fairlight, Edit, Fusion etc are available in the iPad ver 18 release? They are just hidden from view and can be switched on. They are the fully functioning ones and not watered down or limited in any way. Amazing really. This can be done by going into the shortcuts via cmd K. They’d just need switching on by assigning and using an activated shortcut command. Now I have all the pages on my iPad 11 inch M1. Fusion, Edit, Fairlight, and more. I’m astonished. I found this out via a UA-cam posting just yesterday. And all on the free version!! Best wishes and keep up the excellent videos!! Kevin
Very good mate!! Knew you’d be on this very quickly!! 😉 Excellent to hear your thoughts as always.
Glad you enjoyed it. this one too if you missed it ua-cam.com/video/Nkw4Kyr6onA/v-deo.html
I LOVE IT BTW!
Great video!! Thanks for the preview!! Can u speed ramp, on the edit tab?
👀 looks good 👍🏾 love the videos fam ❤💯🔥
Having an iPad version really excites me especially when you said Collaboration works. On travel for field video workI have my MacBook Pro 14: and the iPad Pro 12.9 and in the studio I have the Mac Studio Max for all the heaving lifting for rendering, so having the functionality to leverage the advantages of the iPad Pro with the pencil makes a lot of sense to me rather as a complete stand alone editor platform. I also have the iPad Pro 11' with my basic MacBook Air M1 for regular travel that has the free version of Resolve while the Studio and MacBook Pro has the Studio versions on them. Just makes it super convent if I get in a pinch. Thanks for the update. Looking forward to the release on the store.
OK, yes. I think that makes sense...but yes in essence, ipad flexibility will sync with full version and vice-versa.
Super exciting! Really looking forward to see how the reference monitor function works
reference mode on M2 ipad 12.9 is great. Eats your battery a bit faster.
@@DarrenMostyn I think it would be interesting to see how that works as it will make HDR editing accessible to a lot of creators that couldn't before.
I love it!
me too
Amazing
We live in interesting times. Thanks as always! Now, about external tracker balls..
Can't wait for this!
Its great!
Wow! So @ 0:28 -- the Speed Editor works with the iPad Pro? This is very exciting. Can't wait to get this on my M1 iPad Pro!
yes it does
Darren what title is that in the beginning? congrats again on the 100,000 and sharing all your expertise!! Brings back memories of working with Company 3, 23 years ago.
Just came across your channel mate. Unusual name ;) Ill be checking this out for sure. I use FCPX but have been looking for something else for the iPad when on the road. Cheers mate.
NEW! MotionVFX on iPad - DaVinci Resolve
ua-cam.com/video/rVvoSxIwH48/v-deo.html
Love your content! best part of this review is that a m1 iPad can run it!! I thought only the M2 iPads can run Resolve. I’m very happy with my 2018 iPad Pro but now I’m going to pull the trigger on a m1 iPad that I can probably find used or refurbished. Cheers!
I’ll bet you it works well on that iPad too. However yeah if you’re doing a lot of serious work then you can’t go wrong with the M1, it’s still a brilliant bit of kit
So glad they decided to also have it available on M1. Was really upset about getting an iPad Pro last year during that keynote, especially knowing there’s not much difference in the models aside from a few cores and ProRes.
I tested them here side by side ua-cam.com/video/Nkw4Kyr6onA/v-deo.html
@@DarrenMostyn Really appreciate you putting in the extra work there.
Same! I’m so happy they launched it for the m1.
how about 11 vs 12.9. are the major advantages of a bigger screen especially looking for something portable enough to do some work outside?
Thanks for this sneaky peek Darren, How about speed ramping/keyframing? Or key framing for zooms? Thank you sir!
keyframing yes, speed change yes, speed ramping - no.
I was wondering if it would work on M1 so this is cool to see, I have the M1 12.9”, any info on how to set it up properly as an HDR reference like you mentioned? Thanks!
Nice video. Last time I heard someone say “look after yourself “ was a Twitch streamer called Shyboy who streamed Minecraft. He’d often say that if someone donated or sent bits (if that even was present, he streamed back in the late oughts/early teens but got burned out and stopped)
Thanks Darren, great video as always. Just curious, on the Cut page, can you pinch-to-zoom the main timeline or does the iPad version maintain the same locked view as 18.1?
same locked view
My Speed editor has a good use now
I might get an M1 just for resolve! Been asking for this for a while and people just laughed at me. Hah! It’s here :) time to get cloud running. I assume you can load it on the laptop after you’ve worked on it on the ipad?
I find myself having time to edit or grade, but often at times when I don’t want to whip up a full laptop. This is perfect :)
The projects are compatible both ways, yes.
Nice toy for train travel:) I can see the shortcomings right away like the lack of optimization for that small display.
Timeline and tools should be vertical at the side. There are a lot of horizontal bars that take away important image space.
Thanks Darren.... and the final release data on ipad OS?
The upcoming Apple Vision Pro will be able to run apps for the iPad Pro. Is there any possibility that we could see a version of DaVinci Resolve that's optimized for VR/AR, allowing users to create virtual sets where they could walk around and place objects, lights and cameras anywhere in 3D space?
Hey Darren which other film editing/computer graphic programs have you trained on by chance?
WOW!!! Thanks for the video…
Do you know if DR for iPad can edit 360 footage?
Dont know, sorry. Im at home now and my ipad is in the studio.
Looks good, although by only having the CUT page, I'm going to miss being able to make J and L cuts...
sir please make video on ACES color science and how to use it
Is there multicam support? Looks great and will be a day 1 purchase from me.
Yes there is multicam support
Hi Darren,
Thanks for your great tutorials!
I would have an input for a tutorial.
How to use Magic mask correctly in a workflow.
Magic mask works great, but if you make a correction on a node before magic mask, it gets lost.
Best regards from Switzerland
Terence
yes it does. I use it only when I need to.
I just got a new 12.9” 6th gen M2 1TB iPad Pro when the heck is the app going to drop?!? Excited to use already.
Looks great so far. I've been using Lumafusion on iOS for a while, which is also really good, but will be interesting to see how they progress with Resolve. Especially if I can use it with my Speed Editor.
I found luma fusion to be highly overrated, I was disappointed to find that there also wasn't anything much better either. I hope resolve will resolve this, no pun intended. because right now no one is really taking advantage of these m1 (and m2) chips very much.
On iOS it's hard to find any relevant software because it's so riddled with junk trying to bleed you with subscriptions and microtransactions.
I don't think a one time purchase of 30 bucks for a fast and fairly full featured editor that runs on a phone or tablet is a bad deal in that context.
Resolve is on another level though, so it's going to be interesting seeing what they come up with for the platform.
I adore editing on my iPad Pro and Luma kickass combo.
Speed editor confirmed to work with ipad version of resolve 😉
@@mariotriforce any idea when going to hit the App Store?
How important do you find keyboard? For what it is crucial? I have pencil and speed editor so far. thanks Darren
Darren, quick question. Do you know if BMD will make it so you can export or share projects from the iPad to a desktop computer? I saw you mentioned you can import projects from the full version of DR. It would be great if one can start editing in the iPad, export the project (via email, cloud, portable drive), open the project in a computer or Mac, sync the media and continue editing.
Yes it works great. Ive done it. No issues and collaboration works too.
Does it have the multicam sync by audio? I’m a musician so multicam video of shows with audio from Logic so a much needed feature for me
can't wait for all of the lumafusion vs davinic reviews.... I have lumafusion, keeping my fingers crossed that resolve is much better and includes cloud/cross platform capabilities
Already has cloud/cross platform capabilities
One thing essential for me will be Easing in keyframes, any ways to do this on the cut page
Are there Fusion transitions on the cut page? Also, because no edit page, no J or L cuts? I hope BMD extends the functionality of the cut page and also eventually adds the edit page. I realize that the cut page is more suitable for an iPad, though, but once you have a Magic Keyboard and a Speed Editor, there's a lot you can do with an iPad setup. They aren't cheap, though. A properly equipped iPad will probably run you more than an M1 MacBook - and if you want the 16GB RAM version of the M2 iPad, you'll need to get the 1TB model - crazy expensive. Nevertheless, I'm fascinated by this development and very much appreciate this look into the product, Darren. Thanks very much!
can you make soft subtitles? Maybe like formatted srt?
Does anyone know if BlackMagic are still on track to release this Q4, in other words, this month? Really good summary too Darren.
No word. And thanks.
Can you set the default image duration like you can transitions?
iPad version have pen tool for masking pls make a video Darren😊😊😊
Please tell me something, now that DaVinci Resolve is coming for iPad, if I'm to buy 64 GB iPad Air 5, can I edit a video directly through a Hard Drive or SSD connected through USB C without importing the video in?? Will 64 GB iPad Air be enough, 256 GB is quite expensive for me.
For example, can I edit a file that is bigger than 65 GB on iPad Air 5 M1 (64GB and 8GB Ram) from the SSD and Export the final video as well in the connected SSD, without moving it in the limited iPad internal memory??
Thank you for your informative video 🙌
Great video! Does it have speed ramping tool?
Thx in advance.
speed change but not ramping as far as i can see on my version.
@@DarrenMostyn thx
Big question I have, can you remove and add databases to the cloud? Example: start project in the cloud on iPad, go home and offload from cloud to hard drive on computer and not be working in cloud at that point? I find cloud great to get started mobile, but not ideal for long term storage of finished projects. Thank you!
I have lots of Nikon Nlog footage (*.NEV), but I cannot import them into the iPad version of Davinci Resolve. Do you know of a workaround?
How to download the beta version ?
I think this would be so good for students with iPad pro or air m1. they can edit their school project much more efficiently
absolutely. Education and also content creators who just use iPad - not everyone is a 'power user'.
Please note that I'm using a fully working BETA version - The app is not generally available yet.
Is there a release date for the final product?
Not yet
how to we get the Beta version i only ask as i have a apple dev account and im on the apple beta version as im happy to give feedback to BMD
Hey Darren, another awesome video, I knew you’d get one out as soon as the beta became available - good man! FYI it runs perfectly on the 2020 iPad Pro too using the A12Z chip - let’s hope BMD don’t restrict it to M1&2 chips on release (I’m feeding this back to BMD so let’s hope!). I’m playing about with some previously graded projects now, this is very cool! Lee (Molinare)

Does it have smooth slowmo? And velocity curves…
And does it have RSMB?
I wonder if it would work with ipad air a14 bionic chip
I’m curious if it will support all the different formats that the desktop version supports. I transcode a lot of my footage to DnXHR or I’m editing in Canon Raw and im curious as to if the iPad or DaVinci on the iPad will be able to handle that.
Supports only BRAW, ProRes, H264 and H265 currently.
finally getting some real ‘pro’ use out of ipad pro
I am waiting for the bluetooth Advanced Panel ...I mean the new colour grading panel!😉
next week i hear!
Hi, great vid. Just found you and subscribed. When can we actually get davinci from app store
Thanks for subscribing Steve, No date announced for release. Talk of end of Q4 but that was a while ago - no update
@@DarrenMostyn ok. I will be completely new to Davinci resolve so alot to learn when comes out. If you have some ideal vids where it would be good to start that would be handy. I am gonna look through all yours anyway. My pc could not handle 4k footsge from my dji drone, so hoping this davinci will sort my problems out. I have just got new ipad pro M2 all ready for its release 😊
@@stevemcclelland536 Hi Steve. I have a 'beginners' playlist here if that helps. Enjoy. ua-cam.com/play/PL6VNHhfsVYJawp385IIyLemQL_ZBzgN_5.html
How does it work in the network?
Imagine you have all files on a NAS (with proxy), can Davinci on iPad relink/acces to the files from network devices (as you can connect to server and acces files within the iOS application 'Files')
I wonder whether now Apple finally allows Blackmagic Design to support ProRes RAW on Windows. Premiere supports it.
No support for Apple ProRes RAW. ProRes yes.
Can you add custom titles/graphics from Envato Elements into it? If added from a desktop first, can they open on the iPad?
Also, can you use Multicam on iPad? If so, how does it look and work?
Please, give us some MOOOOORE...
PLEASE, Darren !!!
I check your page every 5 minutes... 😻
appreciated. I try my best and have delivered way more in November than i usually do. Im making a big effort to upload more, but Im a full time colourist running a very busy post facility and not a full time UA-camr. Appreciate you wanting more!! Thanks
Darren
I have ordered the Studio Editor / License bundle for my new M2 MiniPro after trying the free version - downloaded from BlackMagic not the Apple site. Can the same license code be used for the iPad version? How does one to that?
Hi. No the iPad and desktop version separate installers at seperate prices. You need both to run on iPad and desktop.
What video files can you edit on the iPad? Is it the same range as on the full version of resolve or restricted to, for example, ProRes? Any performance issues on the iPad with 4K as opposed to 1080HD ? Does it perform smoothly with files shot at a higher frame rate ? Just curious to get a handle on the performance capabilities of resolve on the iPad before I go and spend £1000 on a new M2! If it’s as good as it seems to be judging by your video would be really useful when travelling.
ProRes, Blackmagic RAW, H264 and H265 is the current supported codecs. For performance check out this speed test I did. ua-cam.com/video/Nkw4Kyr6onA/v-deo.html
…and obviously H265 with transparency?
Hi Darren, can you edit straight from an external SSD drive? Hopefully also with proxies from a Blackmagic Cloud Pod!
yes and yes
@@DarrenMostyn Excellent! Was concerned we'd be trying to copy RED media onset! Looking forward to more videos from yourself :)
A simple question - we know the speed editor works with the iPad version cut page from several sources. So now, does the micro or mini panels work as well with the color page? If not, what seems to be the issue(s)?
No. No bluetooth
Why nobody is trying the beta in older ipads pro? Is it locked for an especific serial number? Can anybody try it in an ipad pro 2020 for example?
This is a perfect demonstration for why there is no FCP on the iPad (beyond iMovie) and why there (fortunately) *_never_* will be. 👍🏼
BTW: there is no such thing as a "ProRes Engine".
please excuse my lack of correct terminology. I know that there is optimised ProRes processing on the M2 iPad. I had this validated by a BMD developer. If I call it an 'engine' that is my term and way of expressing. Can you explain what I did wrong so I can correct to my audience as don't want to mislead anyone.
@@DarrenMostyn Just a niggle. ;)
The M2 has *Media* Engines, as the M1 Pro, Max, and Ultra have, too. Only fewer of them. The M1 has none. They hardware-accelerate H.264, HEVC, *_and_* ProRes / ProRes RAW, so not _just_ ProRes. Therefore calling it a "ProRes Engine" suggests it _only_ accelerates ProRes. It's of course not iPad nor M2-exclusive either, which the PR / marketing machines appear to want to suggest.
Which btw what this whole thing is IMHO. A very clever and effective PR/marketing gimmick for the iPad. Do it well enough, as they have, and people don't realize that this is more expensive, slower, less flexible, an ergonomic nightmare, even *heavier*, etc. etc. than simply buying a MacBook Air or in some cases even 14" MBP. Once this is final and out and the "dangling-car-keys-effect" has worn off that will become more and more apparent and I suspect people will finally understand firsthand why there is no FCP for iPad (which iMovie effectively is, being _100% FCP_ under the hood) and never will be. Because Apple gets it. ;)
I mean… editing (let alone color-grading!) while referencing an image that's _smaller than a deck of cards_ claiming it to be for their "pro" customers? Seriously? 😄
M2 has ProRes acceleration. M1 does not. Both of them accelerate H264 and H265/HEVC.
@@rohitntu Which is exactly what I wrote. 🙄
Do you know if it works with the cloud, or do you need local storage?
cloud yes.
Can I get the Beta?
Does this iPad version work with Blackmagic Cloud and allow me to work with a shared project?
Yes
There is a video that shows how to add all of the options. Fair light, cut and edit pages you have to create short cuts
I heard about it but its not advised as its not a correct implemenration by BMD develooers and so no optimised for ipad like the cut and colour pages.
Hi. Can we add 3rd party effects?
Is it possible only M1, M2 ipad pro?
can the full UI be moved to a larger display via HDMI connected to the ipad?
you can send to larger apple supported apple display. Not sure about HDMI - not checked.
How can i get the beta version ?
I can't find da vinci in app store? Where is it?
Do you think editing cDNG files from my Sigma fp is possible on the ipad?
supported is BRAW, ProRes. H264 and H265.
That would be amazing! Hope it comes on a future update
Do you know if it works with the speed editor?
yes it does. Im using it with one. It works a dream.
@@DarrenMostyn That makes me smile 😃
Any word on pricing/bundles with Studio?
Free or 95 Euro/ Dollar I believe for Studio on app version.
As someone who is working with premiere, this adds another reason to switch to DaVinci xD
Hi Darren, I am facing a problem that feels like the internet is a rabbit hole of opposition, I would really trust and appreciate your input on that: I am not a professional colourist, therefor for now working without a proper monitor just on my Mac, trying my best with proper CST, exports, etc, but I JUST discovered that my screen display (Mac System Preference) was set on LCD, when i changed this setting to the option of Rec. ITU-R BT.709-5 (60 Hertz), obviously my screen changed and the project I've been working on for weeks looks like shite (but like everything else even random YT videos or movies looked weird). I did my best to calibrate my screen before starting the project but I didn't know it was set on LCD.
Should I be working over a Rec. 709 display (my CST out are set for Rec 709 2.4) (or even ACES or Wide Gamut (which is my working color space) or keep on with the LCD option?
Hi. Your monitor settings and ideally calibration should match the output setttings of your colour managenent. So if you are delivering rec709 gamma 2.4, your monitoring needs to match. The fact you are using a regular computer screen is not helping. If it was me - unless you had a tight coloyr managed workflow which can easily change - i would start again! Best of luck.
@@DarrenMostyn thank you so much for your answer! I will start again then
I can’t find the app on the App Store
can you use remote grading on this?
you can share project easily in the cloud so if you have the media then yes, a 12.9" ipad Pro going to look great for remote.
Do outside plugins work?
not that I can see.
But now the setup takes even more space than a MacBook Air? Then it always comes down to that I'll need a laptop for something anyway => carrying two devices instead of one :)
Sadly Apple will never team up with Blackmagic to make an editing laptop or "ipad" with integrated controls and maybe even SDI. Sony used to have those (not for DavinCi) but I believe they gave up too.
how to download the beta?
Wait a minute, so no speed ramping, no masking, may as well stick to Lumafusion atm. Good review by the way…liked
masking is there. No speed ramping.
uh Oh! Lumafusion has some serious competition!
Hmmmm, not quite yet 😊
Perhaps I missed it but is this running on an 8GB or a 16GB iPad?
Darren's iPads (M1 and M2) are both with the base storage, so 8GB RAM. Looks like it runs superbly.
Can you use speed ramping?
speed change, but I cant see a way to speed ramp
How about the color accuracy? I found out that my edited pictures dont look the same on my i pad as with my calibratedpc screen. This can ruin the picture.
Was just going to ask this myself. Same here. I do believe there is a colour mode in the iPad Pro 12.9 that allows you to work in a colour space but sadly I cannot remember the process.
But yah if it’s not calibrated like your monitor, I cannot see it being close at all. My biggest issue using an iPad for anything.
The color accuracy of 12.9" in display reference mode is fantastic. 11 not. You ca n also send the ipad to a calibrated apple monitor.
its in disaply settings....take off 'true tone' and set to reference. And then watch your battery drain! ;))
@@DarrenMostyn ahh! Display reference mode. That was driving me nuts to remember that. Thanks
@@michaelj7069 ja thats a problem. Color grading for paid project is out of question. You can edit your video thats it. When i color grade my pictures for instagram on my i pad they look good on my ipad but if i look at them on a good screen they look like dogshit. I could never sell those pictures
The only thing we need is for davinci to have is Prores raw... fingers crossed.
not supported on this release
Can I access Davinci Cloud projects on it?
yes absolutely no problem
