Ex copper from the 70's, 80's, I cannot believe how ignorant of the law these officers are, it's been stated by the Chief Officers of Police for years that any member of the public can film in any public place and film anything that can be seen from a public place and commit no crime. Absolutely down to poor training. In my day a lack of knowledge such as you expose would have caused my Sergeant to kick my arse! Also, I hate the aggression, the body armour, the lack of head gear and ties. In 1976 for two weeks, the only time in my career we were allowed to go on the street without ties, God forbid if you stepped out of a vehicle or police station without headgear on. A lovely old copper at training school told us, be polite, you are the servant to the public, their uniform representative, call them sir or madam (not easy these days) because if you start off sort, you will probably resolve 90% of problems, but also, starting off soft means you can get hard and if necessary f@@k an arsehole up, but start off hard and you can never go back to soft.

They cannot seem to grasp the fact that when they switch on their camera they become a data handler under GDPR and it is a persons legal right to request a copy of that recording, however, if they fail to notify the person at the earliest opportunity, they may not be aware a recording could be available to cover their defence if required. A member of the public does not have to notify them if recording they are not a government body in a public place. Once again TPONTP, nicely handled, police officers will put their own spin and narrative on a received allegation so they can then pursue that line of questioning to fit around their investigation. If you're good at challenging the police and can do it in a calm, polite and assertive way, then most of the time it should all go well for you, but always be prepared for unforseen surprises because some PCs hate loosing control of a situation or an argument, it upsets them and they can retaliate in some way, usually by unlawfully abusing a specific legislative act and conducting a search of your person.
