  • Filmed on July 25, 2024. Today was our first of three WIC (woman, infant, children) farmers' markets in Columbus Ohio. Low income mothers who qualify for this state funded program are given vouchers for purchasing fresh fruits and veggies at farmers' markets. Out in the fields while picking sweet corn I make a recommendation on what corn variety not to plant and at the end of the video I plant our second to last green bean planting for 2024.

Thank you so much for participating in the WIC program. When my kids were young , I received assistance from WIC. We didn't get vouchers for farmers' markets back then, but what you're doing for these families means a lot. Because otherwise they wouldn't be able to get the great produce.

I would love to taste that corn you talked about with the small ears. That wouldn't deter me from buying it if you say it's great tasting. Besides, I'd just eat 4 or 5 instead of 2. I'm a corn freak!

Appling fungicide via air plane and we all wonder why people are sick! It's in the air it's in the water ways it covers the land and we can't seem to understand why everything is sick and dying. It doesn't go away it has to go somewhere down the ditches, so please tell me how you feel about it.

I don’t like it at all. I feel pretty much the same as you, but that was my dad‘s decision on his row crops. Now, if there’s a chance of taking a huge loss because of heavy disease pressure and that’s the only way to salvage the Crop I can understand it, but I don’t like it

Yes, and they are very, very expensive and you have to have an entire sorting and packing line set up in the barn since they pick every ear. I have friends in Southern Ohio that Hand picked 250 acres and sold their mechanical picker.

I give you a like as soon as I see your content. Because of the work I do on the farm, I cannot always be first tho. We have a coupon program that renews every year and is a large part of our income from the markets. We hand them in and in a few days get an etransfer for the amount. Its a great system. A good market can clean out a truck and trailer for us in a matter of hours.

Our senior program went all digital this year on an app and you scan the QR code on the seniors phone or card and its transfered the next day. Wic will be changing to this in a few years as well, but still paper vouchers for now.

None of my workers really want to talk on camera this year it’s very strange, in the past I definitely had some goofballs that would’ve photo bombed everything if I would’ve been filming then haha

We dont have anything like a coupon sale for fruit and veges here in Australia. What we do have is foodbanks and people like the Salvo's, also hot meal ktichens. Food banks I believe you can get so much food and it includes things like bread and grocery items for a small amount. With the charities people go in and say they have no money for food and they might get a voucher for a relatively small amount to spend at a specific supermarket. These vouchers do not let people buy alcohol or tabacco and I believe also items such as lollies, chips etc.

I grew Nirvana for the first time this year and had the same results as you. Short stalks and low, short ears. They had plenty of nutrients and were side dressed with 32%. My other varieties all had long full ears and I’m betting the Anthem I planted on July 4th will as well. It’s a shame the ears are small. Nirvana has great eating qualities. Hope all is well. It’s definitely a busy time now.

    • @wishwellfarms

Absolutely, I will do the AT eventually but I'm in the middle of finishing the 500 mile Palmetto Trail in SC this Nov and I have numerous other 300-1000 mile trips planned that will take me several years to finish first. I can't do the AT until someone fills my shoes on the farm for August and Sept since that's when I would start in the North...Aug-Dec.
