I recently did something similar with mine. Added the ZHP knob and bought an alcantara boot from Bimmian (black stitching...the M stitching is overkill). Haven't updated to the E60 shifter but just going to the ZHP knob made a significant improvement due to the weight and it's shorter height. I have the UUC Evo short shift w/DSSR in my E36 M3 and that is definitely tempting to do with my M5 but it's honestly so damned expensive I think the E60 route makes much more sense. Also...the UUC kit is pretty notchy. Love your content. Keep it up!
Man I wish you did this video 2 weeks ago! Just did this same mod. But had some issues with 6th popping out. Appears to have stretched and fixed itself now, but would have enjoyed this detailed video before starting!
Did you notice increased noise while in gear after the short shift kit + bushings install? I have like a almost static like noise when I am cruising that goes away once i am in neutral or press the clutch in. Waiting on the glue to dry on my f10 m5 to e39 shift knob retro fit, thanks for the vid!
Damn I did this with the OEM shifter and it’s too tall that it pulls the whole frame out going in reverse/6th gear didn’t know this would only work with a ssk
did this on my e46, sadly the leather is already very shiny and not mat like it was at the beginning..is there any way to restore the mat finish? - same problem on my airbag..
Hey man, nice vid. Do you know if it's possible to just do a straight swap without the short shifter kit? I'd prefer a shorter throw on mine too than the standard one but it's very notchy when cold so don't want the ssk. Thanks
Shifted Perspective I’m looking for something sporty that’s not a daily driver. I just keep hearing so many bad things about bmws in general but your videos make them seem cool
You literally time lapsed through the most important part of the video. How much leather should we leave over the frame to trim with the knife? Should we be aware of any potential issues when trimming the excess leather? Smh
Shifted Perspective wdym? Then what is the exact knife for then? I watched your M3 video and it looks like you cut off leather that was covering any of those tabs. Pls tell me if I’m missing something.
@@MrLambo234 The knife was to do minor trimming or cut a slit in a corner if needed. Just use the same place the original bracket was. I trimmed the one on the M3, but didn't really need to.
Piano black trim is by far the best option, if you can find a clean set!
I did this mod along with E60 545 SSK - very happy with the results on my M5!

Good move going with the lighted one although I like the old man wood too!
Making me want and E39 M5 more and more to accompany my E36 M3 in the garage man....
So many cool M cars to pick from to DD, so little money.
Some people reported the boot popping off when engaging reverse. Seems to be fine in your video.
Hello Can i get the old one ? :D
You could have a friend 3d print out the bracket and add stronger material 🤷♂️. But your way worked as well

Can this work on a 1999 m5? I head there is no dedicated connector for the shift knob illuminator wires.

What did you use for the glue? Sorry if I missed that in the video.
Old Man Wood!!!!
Old Man Wood?! Really? Still love the wood! Hopefully you will be “old” one day, 🙄.

Thank you very much.. nice job.
Hi bro, for how much are you ready to give your old switch lever?)
HEY, can someone confirm that this would also work on an e36 Shifter which has a euro 6spd...?????
OK i can confirm it worked in my E36 m3 - AMAZING!
Can you make this switch without doing the short shift kit on the E39?
Yup!
Shifted Perspective Thanks man! Keep it up!
Cool
Is the plug the same?
Yes
What do you think is the best bmw to start off with? I been looking at the 335 4 door is that a good bmw
depends what you need/want. But a 335 is a lot of car for the money

maybe a Z4 or E46 M3. Those are both fun weekend cars
I have a e90 m3 and want this, can you possibly make this for me and I’ll pay you?
I can if you send me your parts. Send me an email if you want it done

Don't like to mix generations, better to keep E39 as it is, in original setup
What tf is a e60 540? They started with 550i 🤷🏻♂️

+MrLambo234 dont trim off any leather. Put the bracket in the closest spot as the original one and you’ll be fine.

just ruin the originality of the E39
the original shift knob is garbage in my opinion
