Play some country music plsssss...kieth urban plssss
Looks to me like you're using Taylor guitars mostly for accoustic numbers. V - Bracing? I bought a 316ce X Bracing (reduced price) about 5 years ago and it seems to me, as my guitar ages, the Bass is slowly taking over (extreme) ... is this my imagination? Thinking about buying another guitar... 314 or 614, but I'm not sure yet. Any suggestions? Guitar is hydrated and in its case when not in use.
Your rendition actually had me choked up. Just beautifully done.
I cry every time I hear this song. Melancholy and the production is flawless.
From one Canadian to another: You done Gordon proud!
You're back ! I missed you Sensei 😁😁
Beautifully done!👏🏻👏🏻 RIP Gordon. 😥
❤
I could listen to your demo on this song for an hour. It just speaks to who you are as an artist. thank you for keeping us all engaged. You are a special talent. Thank you, and all the best to you. Sincerely, -Scott
Beautiful!! So glad to have you back. ❤
Incredible ear, incredible player, and incredible teacher. You are the best out here. Thank you.
You present well crafted guitar tutorials that are truly the best on youtube. The additional background information is great, and allows us to really appreciate what goes into making these songs so great . Thank you for doing such great work!
Amen to that, Johnny. Andy is a treasure.
One of the greatest human created works of art ever bestowed upon all of our lucky listening senses. Rip Mr Lightfoot
Man, that is such a beautiful rendition of that classic, going to be replaying this for a while, figuring it out, thank you so much!
I agree, excellent.
I heard a story about this song once, not sure how true it is but someone asked Bob Dylan once what is was like to write the perfect song and he said " I don't know. You'd have to ask Gordon"
Probably true. Loads of musicians, singer/songwriters all praised Gordon. As a side note. When asked by RollingStone, what it was like to be the greatest player ... Hendrix replied ... I don't know, you'd have to ask Phil Keaggy !
@@minuano08Hendrix thought Terry Kath of Chicago and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Topp were better guitarist
It's about his separation and divorce
I tell you what I've noticed, when it comes to Canadian musicians there's always these crazy stories about Legends praising them for having superior skills. Even if it's true, they're clearly not serious and even patronizing them to a degree - like patting them in the head. "He's the greatest, go hound him and leave me alone."
Imagine being Hendrix and someone claims you said the greatest guitar player is (enter any talented Canadian guitarist names). Would you say, "No man - I never said Terry Kath is the greatest guitar player of all time" or Bob Dylan flaming some obscure talented Canadian song writer by saying, "Hell no, I never said Gordon is the greatest"
Being on top and humble artists, They have no motivation to correct the record so they let these myths live but they are EXTREMELY unlikely to be True and strangely, always about Canadians or Irishmen.
That doesn't take away how marvelous of a player & song writer Gordon was, and personally, I don't think those stupid stories matter.
This is like asking Einstein How it feels to be the smartest person alive, and he said " You'll have to ask Tesla"
Finish completely false, and I've seen it with a few other names too
Great lesson Andy. Anyone who ever saw Lightfoot live knows that the audience was quite literally mesmerized during the performance of this song hanging on to every word. A true classic.
Definitely the best, most comprehensive lesson for this Lightfoot classic I’ve seen yet. And I think it’s also a tribute to The genius of Red Shea’s guitar skills. You nailed it when you said that Red’s guitar playing added a lot to Gord’s music in those early days. Thanks for this amazing lesson.
RIP. Gord and Red
You ARE the go to guitar Master Rick. Beautifully done and taught as usual. Great to see and hear you once again.
Welcome back❤
In the 70s I remember bands would live upstairs in the hotels and travel all over Canada what a great time for live music.
Outstanding as always. Greatly appreciate your lessons.
It is truly a pleasure to watch and listen to your playing and narrative. Thanks
I was watching your "reel" of demos, which I think is a gradn idea because I really enjoy simply watching you play. And I went to your page and found this song, agai. I don't think I commented on it before, but I can haredly tell you hoiw much I love this song. All the old memoires that it sirs up in me. I don't think we really appriecate life, or realize how short it is until we come to the end of it and look ack on such beautiufl moments such as this.
Thank you! This is my favourite by Gordon Lightfoot and a Song for a Winter’s Night
I learned Red Shea’s part and mixed it in with the chords. Played it out in a trio and it was very well received. Ty.
Thanks @thebigleone1066. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
I will. Your tutorials are among the best on UA-cam. I'm a Canadian working and living in California. Regards!
Thanks for supporting what I do, I really appreciate it! Cheers, Andy.
Holy smokes - what a completely different vibe w/out the singing! Totally awesome how it changes. Great job.
Thank you for posting such a clear and concise tutorial on this wonderful piece
What a great lesson Andy! I always enjoy when you select such iconic songs... especially when they're so appropriate to celebrate the genius of the artist AND the great accompanying artists who played with them. I am reminded of your lessons of Jim Croce and Maury Muehleisen. There's no greater place than this site for learning the most beautiful acoustic guitar arrangements... just outstanding!
This may have to become my new "Party Piece". Gorgeous!
That play through was just beautiful. Thank you!
Few songs generate such powerful emotions as this one. Your demo was brilliantly and perfectly played. It brought tears to my eyes just as an instrumental. Try singing along and it’s just emotionally too hard.
Wow. This is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. He was so influential to so many songwriters and most don’t even know it. Beautifully played sir.
Another brilliant song by my fellow Canadian, a master of playing the vocal line melodies along perfect fingerpicking. A master class of playing, singing and songwriting. Thanks man, gonna dive deep into this too. Best teacher on the net.
Thanks, that was absolutely wonderful!!😭😫😩🥲🥲
What an awesome video! Thank you so much for breaking down Red Shea's part. He was an incredibly fantastic guitar player who added so much to Gordon Lightfoot's songs. I appreciate the work you do.
You basically taught me guitar Mr. Shut Up and Play much love
Thank you for this! I really appreciate the last segment, I am going to work harder.
You are the best teacher on UA-cam. Hands down. Phenomenal
One of the greatest love songs ever
thx again! this is by far the best lesson on the net - as always! your thoughts at the end regarding our present time are spot on as well...
I stopped paying attention to the playing pretty soon and just relaxed to bathe in the music. Thank you! :)
I think of you as a songwriting teacher. I’ve learned my theory elsewhere, but you give me the ability to play the sound I wish to replicate in a way I can deconstruct the theory, and that allows me to find balance between creativity and theory. Thank you !
you are an awesome player and instructor
Thanks!
Very clear style of teaching...I'm a self-taught bassist for over 35years ...I use to just pic at an acoustic guitar for fun ...thanks to your clean style and great tutorials...now I "shut up n play" lol...good job my brother.
Very nice work! Of course I can't put vocals to your rendition when you keep stopping and teaching everyone how to play it on guitar ! LOL I still love it all the same ! nice work , my friend !
Worth MANY watches just for the immaculate recording and performance, even absent the explanation and breakdown. Thanks!
I remember this song from the movie "Paperback Hero". It immediately became one of my favourite Gordon Lightfoot songs. Thank you for this one.
Beautiful song and great lesson! Also glad you mention Red Shea. His fills are so tasteful and well-timed -- a really important part of the song.
I was stunned by the beauty of that opening demo.
OMG!! Gordon Lightfoot was a true genius finger-picker. Definitely get the tab; the intricacy Is beyond belief. This is so much more than mere "Travis picking"; it's a master class in "Lightfoot picking", with three bass notes per 4-beat bar, and a continuous variation in the treble notes. Even if I had this brilliant lesson in 1971, my brain would have exploded. Now with another 50 years of guitar experience, I might just be able to play the Lightfoot part. Of course, I'd need to find another Red Shea for the second part. Maybe in a second lifetime!
Thank you so much. Especially for pointing out how just a few embellishments from the support musician add such sweet flavor to the overall song.
So beautiful! thx for showing this to us! 🤩
You are one of the finest and clean guitar players i have ever had the pleasure to listen to.your grasp of the song and it's feel is spot on.Technically perfect!!!
Love your channel, Andy! Keep up the great lessons...from a fellow Canadian.
Red Shea played so beautifully. All the more so on this song.
Learning the Red Shea parts really makes you think . Thanks Andy
Amazing rendition and beautifully executed.
Your a Canadian To !!! Gordon Lightfoot Was a great singer song writer, Guitar player and also a Canadian , Your lessons are appreciated , Thanks again fellow Canadaiin
Superb as always ! I'm not necessarily a fan of bow strings either in guitar centric music but IMHO its where the most interesting movement & color tones reside in this song. Though very much like many of Croce tunes & especially in perhaps his best known Time in a bottle, the 2nd acoustic plays a HUGE role.
I love this. Great job. 👍
I've been a Gordon Lightfoot fan for over 50 years. Beautiful song.
Wow, what a brilliant breakdown of this masterpiece! One of the best songs ever written and you've demystified the genius of the playing.
You continue to amaze and inspire guitar players everywhere, thanks for sharing your talent and passion for the music. 👍
And belated thanks for the Fleetwood Mac lessons, I'm rehearsing with a tribute right now and they have been really invaluable... Although I still can't get my thumb to work like Lindsay's! 😮
Big thanks from a fellow Canuck!
Exceptional guitar playing and teaching as always .Beautiful......
Great. "Sundown" next for the Lightfoot fans🙏
Oh, the heck with the lesson, just fun to watch. Very good.
Fantastic! I agree with you about the strings too!
Absolutely brilliant. A few days ago, I'd decided to play this song for an upcoming open mic. I was going to do a "dumbed down" version, but not anymore!!!! Thank you Andy!
I'm thinking the same. Andy's lesson is so clear, I just might be able to pull it off. We'll see!
This song is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. Thanks for the lesson, Andy!
BEAUTIFUL RENDITION, BEAUTIFUL! tHANK YOU.
One of your best. Such beautiful music.
I learned the main part a few years ago after seeing Rick Beato's "What Makes This Song Great?" analysis of the tune. I bought your tab a few months ago so l can eventually correct the mistakes l've been making and also learn the Red Shea parts, however, l'm just now getting around to watching your demo. Just stunning! Thank you for covering this gorgeous piece, Andy!!
Absolutely beautiful, you’ve been missed brother! My very best to you with heartfelt thanks for these gifts!
Rick
Aloha Braddah Randy! I have committed to make monthly donations to you, just signed up to do that. You give so much of yourself for free with each lesson professionally done, front to back! I want to say that they’re are many guitar instructors out there and I subscribe to some but for song transcription lessons, I always come back to you. I have been really impressed with your content but the sound quality….outstanding! Too many sites out there don’t get it right with the audio side of it with the instrument. I find myself always coming back to your site. Mahalo nui loa Braddah for sharing your time with the World!
Loved the instruction, loved your comments at the end. I am so glad I took the time to listen to this from start to finish, just after waking up this morning. Thanks so much and please keep them coming.
So happy you are still able to create new videos. Thank you for this one especially.
That is the best UA-cam tutorial in the world and I’ve ever seen
That’s why we love acoustic guitar;) I once saw GL live many years ago, he simply would not perform until the crowd settled right down
Always loved listing to GL when I was young. Beautiful playing.
So glad you are still posting!! Thank you!
Best, most accurate lessons on UA-cam. Sensational work as always, thank you. There was one element I thought you’d missed adding a B going into the C from G, similar to the Fsharp into G which I hear in the record but I bow to the superior guitarist. Probably just a bass.
Ah, my Bunraku master of Canadiana, what a joy this is on a Sunday afternoon.......
This is one of the first songs I learned to play.. Great tune
You are without a doubt “The Guitar Monster “ ! 👍
Best how to video's on U-tube. Thanks for making these video's for those of us who want to be able to do what you do on this amazing instrument.
Your lessons and channel are the best!!! PERIOD!!!!🎉🎉🎉
Best guitar teacher on the ‘Tube.
Red's fills are amazing, such great guitar playing. Looking forward to learning them. Thanks. Just a note yes this is Gordon's most recognized commercial song but, his catalog is in-depth so many great songs minstrel of the dawn, beautiful, softy, Don Quixote, Canadian railroad trilogy not a finger picking great nonetheless. Just needed to point that out. Love Gordon' Lightfoot's music
Man that was Beautiful
Andy, what a genius.
That is just an incredible video that you’ve put up here. you’re right it’s long but I enjoyed every second and every minute. it was so instructive. I’m a big fan. Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos and for your website with all the information and the gear you use, that’s so useful. Thank you. No problem to make a donation it’s worth it. I probably do not need to download the Tabs because your explanation is so good but I’ll do it anyway to support you. Thanks a million.

Wow , you never fail to deliver the best git-fiddle tutorials on the World Wide Web my friend.
Keep up the great work Sir !
I'm 300% better after mastering this....to the end. Thank you for doing this.
This is a spectacular video - playing and instruction are so very well done.
Thanks Jon. I watched your gear video on your brothers channel a few years back. You're a great guitar player. Love your gold top LP! Cheers, Andy.
@@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials I’m playing an acoustic gig next week and playing the Red Shea part - which is an incredible part that makes this magical tune move - and you are a maestro with it, Andy!
Yeah, Red's part is amazing! I really struggled with the fingerpicking in the "if you read between the lines" section. Couldn't get it nice and even like he did. I agree, his part adds SO much to the song. Good luck with the gig and thanks for your kind words Jon. Coming from a fellow musician, I appreciate it that much more! Cheers, Andy.
My guitar is sitting right but I just had to stop and enjoy this moment. Thank you.
Red Shea. I'm sure you have seen the BBC video from 1972 (Gord also does a great rendition of Farewell to Nova Scotia). I saw Gord in 2000 at a casino in Michigan (with posters of his Sundown days - he didn't look like that in 2000 😎), and again in 2012 at Massey in Toronto (Jimmy Buffett was in the audience a few rows up and over from me). Gord was a little older and his voice was not as strong... but he was a legend and I was completely satisfied. Thank you Andy. Really nice work. All your videos are great and I respect the effort you make.
Oh Thank You for this.. I love this song 👍
Andy, You're a GREAT teacher❣ You make everything easily understandable & digestible❣ Thanks, "Break-a-leg", & kind regards❣
Andy, your lessons are the best. Definitely getting the tab for this one. Thank you
Made a donation......because......this simply is art
Thanks so much Andy. Working out some parts for this song to accompany my partner singing and playing the main part was next on my list, so your lesson couldn’t be better timed or more valuable to me! Plus you post the best lessons and beautiful arrangements! Thank you
That sounds fantastic.
...what a tale my thoughts could tell.
It’s as if You could read my mind. Been looking for this! Gorgeous. Thanks 😊
I'm excited to see you break this one down. Great tune! Thanks
