Is this something I will remember/care about in a year? Also, figure out your “hourly” rate for your time and calculating the number of hours I’d have to work to pay for an item to figure out if the spend is truly worth it!
During quarantine, I found myself shopping on Amazon way too much. A strategy that’s been working for me is, instead of putting the item in my cart, I put it on my wishlist. I hardly ever go looking through my wishlist and when I do, I find that I can delete a lot of the items because I’m no longer interested. I just thought I’d share this for anyone out there that may find this tip useful for themselves.
It’s very personal what you decide to spend on, but I think there’s a healthy order to make sure we aren’t adversely affecting our financial picture either! 🥰 YOLO was never a good financial plan for me lol
Perfect timing thanks Christina. I try to not buy after 8 pm I’ve noticed I’m more impulsive when I’m tired. I’m 62 so I look for will I still love it in 20 years bc I have pieces I still love I’ve had 30 years (amid lots of regret purchases).
I love the self awareness - I agree with the time of day!

A tip I really value is to KNOW YOUR COLORS! Know your undertone, season etc. That way you buy clothing in the color that suits you and there's a much lower chance of it resting in the wardrobe most of the time.
I think to myself…the reason I like it means I already probably have something similar (mostly with clothes/makeup, but sometimes decor). And so I can talk myself out of buying it since I already own something like it. I tell myself “it’s okay to like something and not buy it. I like a lot of things, but I don’t have to own them.”
I know this is my 3rd comment, but I have a scarcity complex, from being poor for so many years. I do have a college degree but I wanted to b home with my children. I was spending way too much money at the grocery store. Like hundreds of dollars a month. Me and my husband try to give a responsibility to whoever is the best at whatever it was. Due to the pandemic, my scarcity complex, impulse buying, buying more than we needed, not budgeting, I’ve turned the grocery shopping over to my husband. He doesn’t care if the kids want 4 different kinds of cereal or Debbie Cakes etc…he gets what we need. It’s taken the pressure off of me, especially bc I suffer from anxiety due to the trauma I endured in my first marriage. When I would see the prices on food just going up and up and up, I would get extremely anxious. My husband is relieved that I finally let him do the grocery shopping bc it’s saving us money now and it’s keeping us out of going deeper in debt.
The "cool down period" is the real deal. I've caught myself on the verge of impulse buying a number of times now; I especially get nervous when I see "Hurry! Almost sold out!". But after analyzing my wardrobe multiple times and just staying off the website, I realized that those potential buys were regrets waiting to happen. So, stepping away, forgetting about it for bit and then analyzing my wardrobe is definitely changing things for me.
I cannot even explain to you with ANY WORDS how extremely grateful I am for you and this content. I am a “shopaholic” aka I have a pretty intense shopping addiction that I’ve developed as a response to trauma. Good stuff that I’ve figured out with my therapist 🤪✌🏼 I have made so much progress just by watching your videos and also the videos/book of Madeleine Olivia. You guys are amazing. Obviously doing real trauma work with my therapist as well but you have helped me so so so much. THANK YOU.
cost per wear is so good :) was invited to a wedding and looked for a second hand dress as I will only wear it a few times. I get that some people want to look extra good at these occasion, but I even liked the second hand options better than what is currently in stores
To become better in mindful spending, I’ve (mostly) stopped browsing online clothes stores and unsubscribed from all their newsletters. And I waaaaaait some days before buying anything.
Oh I’m so guilty of waiting to wear the thing, I need to just get on and wear the things! If I like them I need to wear them even if it’s to the supermarket ;)
I feel like your videos are the only ones worth commenting on. As always, fantastic info. I always feel that I’m nourishing my life when I see your video. Your videos Tick so many “self-care” boxes in my life.
I love that cost per wear concept ! Never heard of it before. I did just but a pair of boots ... 40% off... that I’d wanted for years. I’ll def wear them often. Every day walking boots with jeans or dress. $96 & free shipping !! I walk & bus everywhere so good footwear is also my “car”. Congrats on paying off your student loans!! Mine are history now, too !! Yay !! Thx 4 this video. Liz
I like cost-per-wear as a starting concept but I think some types of items are just inherently going to be higher on that, like blazers or more delicate pieces you don't necessarily want to wear into the ground. Super important to think about subtle basics vs the more statement items as well
You look so good with this green blazer! 😊 Before buying something, I do think how many ways I can style the new purchase, and I wait at least one week before buying. Thank you for your advices, I will check also for the cost/wear!
Awesome content as always. You always inspire me to keep getting better at managing my money and to stop buying things on impulse. I amazed happy to say that I am on the right track now thanks to all your wonderful money saving and living more intentionally videos! I am so thankful I found your channel.
I like to ask myself if what I’m buying is filling a gap that I’ve already identified. So for my closet for example, if the item I want fills a gap in my wardrobe that I’ve been wanting to fill (whether it’s in color, cut, fabric, fit, etc), then I’ll go ahead and buy it. If it’s just a pretty thing that sparked the, ‘Oh I want it!’ thought process, I’ll bookmark it and see if I return to it later. If I do, and do so multiple times then I know it’ll be a good purchase but if I forget about it, then it’s an impulse that I’ll be fine w/o. Same thing with other larger purchases like tech and hobby stuff.
I recently had a large jump in income. The hubs and I are working on getting our debt paid off quickly and we’re also meeting with a financial planner to make sure we have the ability to retire some day. Looking forward to being debt free like you!
Love the blazer. 💚Waiting is my go-to method to avoid impulse purchases as well! If I see a clothing or makeup item that excites me, I typically wait until the next paycheque and reevaluate (more paycheques if the purchase is pricey). Usually, the initial excitement has faded and I don't purchase it.
Love your jacket! Looks good on you! I am very thrifty but love that 'high' of buying something. I try not to buy something straight up. but wait, till it's on sale, till I go back to that shop again... My husband says 'Just buy it!' , but the waiting game can be thrilling too. And if it's not there, sold out, etc then I tell myself that it just wasn't meant to be.
I've waited on purchasing things that I've wanted and then getting super upset when they sold out and spend double or triple the money trying to find something that replaces it but not exactly the same so I'm still disappointed. I figure I'll just buy the thing and return it later if I don't like it. Most places have great return policies. I've also saved money by dropping out of college haha. Funny I make like five times more than my friend who has a degree.
You know what’s funny about the waiting period. I try not to note down the item I want, nor take a photo of it or keep a screenshot, because I actually find that after a day or so I usually totally forget that I wanted the item in the first place! 😂 Definitely a want and not a need.
It's helpful hearing about what you did while you were in debt. I'm in the thick of paying off student loans and it really affects my ability to spend money on literally anything else 😅
I really enjoyed this video! There are a couple of things I like to think about before I spend my money on clothes. The first thing, especially if I am thrifting, is whether I would pay full price for the item. The second is if I have proof of concept for the item. I has a satiny slip dress that I loved the fit of, but didn’t like the color too much. i sold that one and bought the same dress second hand in a navy color, and I wear the navy so much more now.
So much financial wisdom in this video! My husband and I have a set dollar amount we can spend or save as we choose. It is REALLY helped us prioritize our disposable income purchases.
I like to think in terms of basics and fashion trends. I don't find that I need to spend often on the basics as I have some pants, skirts, and dresses that I consider timeless for me as they fit and suit my age. I like to add a fashion trend or two to look modern. I always buy these on sale as they may end up in the giveaway pile in a couple of years. I am enjoying your videos. Thanks.
Some really great tips- thank you!!! It’s just been a challenge to ‘let go’ during the pandemic when not quite back to normal at work or as social as before…
I really liked the part about budgeting for "fun" money, because I tend to overspend on drinks and food with friends, thinking it's "investment in my social life & mental health." This video inspired me to go over my budget & spending habits once again, and work on budgeting more. Thank you for your amazing videos :)
At the end of last year, I put a couple things in my wishlist, but decided to hold off on purchasing them until I came home from a long trip. By the time I was ready to order, everything had drastically increased in price. At first I was extremely disappointed, but now I've reconsidered my priorities and am ultimately happy that I missed that window to splurge on pretty things.
I’m building my basic wardrobe essentials and I have a wishlist of those items. I use that list to pick out items online and then wait for a sale or coupon before buying them. I also use your techniques as well. ❤️
My head does really strange thoughts to keep my coping strategy nr 1 - the spending. I watch your videos for example and then i feel like i have my finances together (even if i really do not). I feel satisfied and safe. Then its saturday and i dont have anything else to do and so i go out to h&m and then i spend a whole lot of money. Then i feel guilty but instead of stopping then, i think "well. Its already lost." and then my spending escalates quickly. My daughter needed some new trousers but instead of thinking how many she does need, i ordered A LOT of jeans. Like 13 or 14. I dont know. Then i have spend wayyy to much money and this sucks.
I thoroughly enjoy all of your content on mindful spending. It helps me so much in my own life. I also love your new dark green blazer. It's an amazing color on you!
that's so true! my mom gifted me a tiffany diamond key necklace for my 20th birthday. i wore it on and off for 5 years and everyday for another 5 years. i feel like it's really worth the price~
What has helped me .... buying and returning...while it's somewhat time -consuming, once I "own" it, it amazes me how fast I lose interest in the "have-nots have it" item.
Omggg so interesting! I wonder if that goes back to that idea of feeling productive when we spend money. It feels like we “got something done”. I notice that in myself a lot!
Thank you, thank you, thank you Christina! I needed this video. I'm a minimalist. But, sadly the kind of it I am is: decluttering, buying new things, using them a few times, and then decuttering them and giving the items to my best friend. My house changes the way it looks every couple months, but it is still very minimal, but costly.

Its refreshing to hear someone acknowledge that its ok to give into impulses to spend money but that it should be ‘contained’ and accounted for. Never heard anyone mention this tip before but its so true and makes a lot of sense!
I always think about how easy or hard it's going to be to clean and store also. I have a tiny apartment and am on a minimalist/intentionalist journey. Resale value is also something to think about. A few years down the line, is the thing going to be hard to sell or recycle?
Revisiting all your past videos today has been really really fun, informative and motivating. I like coming back to your videos to see if I have put what you shared to good use in my own day to day life. And I find a lot of the things you shared, I have been doing them religiously and they have seriously taught me a lot. So thanks, Christina. I really appreciate your channel and everything that you do here on UA-cam. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My mindset in response to advertising/marketing is to ask if I will allow "them" to separate me from my money. Is what is on offer worth being separated from what I have worked hard to get.
Let me tell you, when you have kids, fun money goes out the window 😂 or more truthfully, it all goes on them - their necessities and their fun takes precedence. These are great rules to follow and teach your kids too
Thank you for this, so helpful. Before I buy something I have been recently trying to think of the full lifecycle of an item, like where will it go if I tire of it or don't like it. When I buy something I'm not mindful of the fact that I may not want this item in a few years or even weeks. Hoping that this is another way to pause the want -buy-semi use-discard cycle.
For us journaling folks, would you mind putting some prompts together regarding mindful spending and spending habits? You touch on so many great points, and I'm currently using this vid to inspire some journal prompts for myself, but I'm sure others would love something like that! Even prompts on capsule wardrobes, finding personal style, etc?
I changed the way i buy clothing now. I love jeans but don't wear often. So only keep 2 pairs at a time now of my favorite jeans. I wear lounge pants alot, so i have more of them. I do all bottoms and tank tops in black so that everything else i wear on top always matches.
I think about whether I already have sth in a similar style (may be a different colour or fabric even) in my wardrobe and if the new item will compete with the existing item for wears. If the answers are yes and yes, I don't buy.
I think about the value. Which value I get for my hard earned Money. I check if this expense will hypothetical make me happier in a long run. Greetings from Germany:)
I rarely regret clothing purchases but I still quite often regret skincare and makeup purchases because I am looking for the miracle cream or great lipstick. In fact it's mostly skincare as I have such temperamental skin- don't get me wrong I've made some excellent purchases too but the bad ones do niggle me.
I feel this so strongly! When my skin is “bad” it’s when there’s so much temptation to buy that miracle serum - but usually my skin just needs the bare minimum like a drugstore cleanser and moisturizer to calm down.
This sounds so familiar, especially with the make up. I've spend so much time looking for the perfect small eyeshadow palette with just the "exact" right colours. Same goes for a few lipsticks. Just to find out that none of them were that and that the first small palette did it's job just fine, next to some blush as pink eyeshadow combined with a little metallic highlighter. 🤦
It’s a range! Ramit Sethi suggests 20-35% of takehome (as long as your fixed don’t exceed 50-60% of TH and you’re still able to save 5-10% and invest 10%). You’d also adjust this if you have debt.
Never been so early like today. But was very late on this: 23 year old me splurging and 27 year old me needing to pay it off... not worth it anymore to 'buy now and pay later' ^^' But learnd from it, growing from it xD
What kinds of things do you think about before you buy? 🛍
Is this something I will remember/care about in a year? Also, figure out your “hourly” rate for your time and calculating the number of hours I’d have to work to pay for an item to figure out if the spend is truly worth it!
@@amyr9497 YESSS! The hourly rate tip is SO GOOD!
How much time i have to work to buy that item? For instance, a smartwach i just cant justify it.
I consider how sustainable it is to dispose of it if it breaks?
In general I ask if I'll get as much use out of an item if I think I will. For makeup specifically I ask if it'll fill a gap in my stash.
I do this too!!! I even categorise my wish lists.. and sometimes months later I think "what on earth is this doing here??"
@@lealeilani9256 Ohmigosh, same!!!
I have a wish list on Chrome to "hold" ideas , I review them when I have some free spending money or use them as a basis for Xmas and birthday lists.
Yes! I even created a page in Notion where I link to products that interest me.... but I almost never buy anything on my list :)
As someone still learning financial literacy I love that you go into detail about how to determine what to spend money on and what not to. 👏🏽
It’s very personal what you decide to spend on, but I think there’s a healthy order to make sure we aren’t adversely affecting our financial picture either! 🥰 YOLO was never a good financial plan for me lol

Fantastic, thorough advice. Love watching your journey over the years and you look fab in green!
A great insightful video! I loved the part about having a budget for impulse spending. Its refreshing to hear someone acknowledge that its ok to give into impulses to spend money but that it should be ‘contained’ and accounted for. Never heard anyone mention this tip before but its so true and makes a lot of sense!
It's so helpful to hear the grounding advice on spending. Thank you
I've never thought of cost per wear before, a great tip, thanks very much for another great video Christina.x
These are great tips to remind ourselves think before we buy! Thank you Christina.
My struggle is a partner who doesn't do minimalism or savings. And does not value either. To be fair, i used to have the same mindset.
I always think about how easy or hard it's going to be to clean and store also. I have a tiny apartment and am on a minimalist/intentionalist journey. Resale value is also something to think about. A few years down the line, is the thing going to be hard to sell or recycle?
Thank you for reminding me to slow down and think about it a little longer before pulling the trigger.
🥰🥰 yes!! I always like to sleep on it at the very minimum - unless of course it’s part of the fun money budget but tbh that’s usually food for me haha
I've just subscribed your videos are very informative honest and clear
Thank you for being here!!
Nothing better than saving for the first home down payment... wishing you all the best for home buying process 🙏🥰

that green jacket on you is gorgeous. love it!
Let me tell you, when you have kids, fun money goes out the window 😂 or more truthfully, it all goes on them - their necessities and their fun takes precedence.
These are great rules to follow and teach your kids too
Love your tips. Putting something on a wishlist and waiting for it is such a good strategy.
You look amazing in the color! Very swanky. Im proud of your progress. Content regarding this is so important these days.
Very informative. Thanks. With every purchase l add transportation cost, food cost if I had any while buying that product.
Hi Christina - I really appreciate your videos; thanks for the crisp, straight-forward advice!
Such a helpful video. Thank you. I buy way too much stuff that I don’t need.
Very helpful tips!!! Thank you 🌺
Love that green blazer💗
I look at reviews and if I can, watch video reviews on UA-cam as well. I also won’t do anything on impulse and make sure I have a plan!
I love that! Very mindful and long term thinking - which can especially be so absent with trends and those super fast fashion cycles 😭
Wonderful advice as always, and I must say that green/ dark teal looks Ah-MAzinG on you. ((swooooon))
Eeee thank you! Who knew I’d peep into colour someday 😂💚
I have a journal for free on my website! 🥰 let me know how you like it
@@Christinamychas I think it's still on hiatus? But I have it bookmarked for when it'll be back up. I'll be ready!
I love green color, my clothes are green.
💚💚💚
Great vid and tips to start off spring 2022
🥰🥰🥰
Yes!! 👍 thank you Christina 😊
I changed the way i buy clothing now. I love jeans but don't wear often. So only keep 2 pairs at a time now of my favorite jeans. I wear lounge pants alot, so i have more of them. I do all bottoms and tank tops in black so that everything else i wear on top always matches.
i think about my mum's disappointed expression or my brother's judgemental one 😅
Hahaha omg I can see it. Prob bc I’ve seen it countless times from my own fam! 😅
Love the Fun money budget idea!😁
Yes!!! I loveeee it bc it keeps you on track while still being able to be spontaneous without worrying about it later!
Well said and really helpful😊
And the cost/wear winners of 2021 are: my joggers 🤣🥇
Sorry Christina 😃
Love the video 👍🏻❤️
Hahaha mine are my lululemon aligns 😂 the all over winner since 2020
Great stuff !! achieving the balance between discipline and occasional special purchases. Nice !! :-)
you help me a lot! appreciate you
Great input
Love the jacket color 🤑
Woo! I'm early!! Happy Sunday Christina! 💚
Yayyy so glad you’re here! Happy Sunday my friend!
Excellent points! Thank you!!!
Thank you 🙏
I have been much better with clothes but still kinda frivolous when it comes to food 🤦🏻♀️
I need a 90 day cooling off period for non essentials!
One thing I think of before buying anything is: do I already have a better version of this thing? In most cases, the answer is Yes 😁
How much % would you recommend for fun money? I just can't figure out what will fit for me.. Love the tips! Thank you
It’s a range! Ramit Sethi suggests 20-35% of takehome (as long as your fixed don’t exceed 50-60% of TH and you’re still able to save 5-10% and invest 10%). You’d also adjust this if you have debt.
Never been so early like today.
But was very late on this: 23 year old me splurging and 27 year old me needing to pay it off... not worth it anymore to 'buy now and pay later' ^^'
But learnd from it, growing from it xD
Same!!! 🥰
Love this.
So glad!
Wise!
🥰🥰
I’ve been wanting a bag for 2 months now. Still debating if i should get it now or not 😭
If it’s not a “hell yes” 🥰
I'm really start thinking: "stop that's too much money for",even if it is a small amount
Thank goodness I never cared about fashion. I’ll buy a tshirt from goodwill and wear it till it falls apart. My cozy pet wear has to be pennies
It is really depressing to live in a country where I learn these concepts, but can't use them 😢
If you have a friend who wears same size clothing, share! Exchange items every 6 months instead of buying.
Is that 30 wears benchmark per year or overall, ever? Bc it doesn't seem hard to get 30 wears over the lifetime of an item? 🤔
Agreed, it's not unusual for me to hit 40+ wears per season for my most worn pants/shoes at least. Tops might be different
