    the "V" cutouts in the circular crown are not symmetric in the original design: one of the sides is normal to the plane of of the fan, and the other is tapered. that was, accoridng to a Noctua representative's interview, in order to "straighten" the rotational energy the fan induce onto the airflow

    I've coveted this thing ever since I watched your video. Where I live, there aren't many 3D printing opportunities but a customer of mine hooked me up with a place where they print parts for car and motorcycle customization. Went there, got the two parts made and... I came back home with a 3D printer they didn't use anymore, too small for the quantities they print these days. Now I have got that really great desk fan and I can dabble into printing too. Coincidences leading to good things!
    And that fan rocks. It blows *just* strong enough for a desktop use. You don't want a too powerful airflow, since when using monitors, one blinks less. Too much wind can then make your eyes sore. This bad boy does the trick perfectly. Thank you again for that great project, I linked it to many of my buddies.

  • @TotesCray
    @TotesCray 3 роки тому +9

    I've been considering 3d printing airflow ducts to concentrate airflow in the places it needs to get, rather than just blowing indiscriminately into the case and hoping the GPU fans, for example, pick up enough nice cool outside air. Reminds me of the old days when I cut a hole in the side panel of my case, then used a truncated sour cream tub and some hot glue to duct outside air directly to the MC462A heatsink on my overclocked Duron in like 1998.

Difference being that this one used 60mm fans (it had a pabst 60x25mm on it when I found it), vs the 80mm "giant" (for the time) of the 462A, and that it was all aluminum, rather than copper cold plate with aluminum rods. It still has the imprint of the duron die and 4 pads in the corners on the base of the heatsink. :)

    I'm not surprised that Noctua wants to make one. I am surprised that it is taking them so long. I've been making these style desk fans from 120mm fans for decades. Usually with an AC to DC "universal" power brick from Radio Shack (back when they were a place to get electronic parts) so that I could select between things like 5V, 9V, or 12V to control the speed. (Though a simple 12V and a variable potentiometer do the trick too.) Maybe tape on some straightened paper clips or cardboard for safety. A couple of big office-supply binder clips with erasers taped on for feet. Put those office supplies to good use! LOL Though 3D printing certainly makes them nicer. A kit from Noctua would be neat.

    • @jaro6985
      @jaro6985 3 роки тому +1

      No thats not going to help, if you are making a fume extractor use a simple adapter connection to a standard flexible duct (100 or 150mm), then have a intake shroud suited for your work at the end of the duct (rectangular, etc.).

    • @MichalKobuszewski
      @MichalKobuszewski 3 роки тому +2

      Thing is you cannot really direct the negative pressure current. Even a $2.5K JBC FAE2 extractor with a 2" nozzle seems to loose any effect beyond 5 inches or so. The air approaches the intake from all sides equally, so to speak.

    This is pretty awesome, congrats! I noticed on the Noctua press kit, they make a reference that this airflow amplification system uses the venturi-effect. I guess the inside of those outlets has variable inner diameter. Also i believe there is some inner fin structure to spin the flow. Maybe you could try to implement something like this in the design and check if there are any differences to the airflow.

  • @squidcaps4308

    Good timing, i just printed myself a bed side table fan, it has to be quiet. I took 80mm fan, printed extra blades that were glued on the hub and then a chassis around it. But i was not satisfied with the regular vanes controlling the airflow, it is narrow but tall stream.. it needs to be quite focused for my case so i can keep more distance to it.. Fortunately i made it from two parts so i can try different designs for flow control.
    Lessons learned from Fan Showdown have been useful.. edit: printing a central "cone" with flat top would give a nice place for a potentiometer with a switch, to have on/off and speed controller on the front.. It would also make it easier to print..

    Now try it with the center cut fully open. The higher pressure and speed of the air thru the nozzles may educt a lot more air thru the fan. It might even compete with the best you have tested. This a close to a design I have been thinking about but I don't have printing or CAD capability.

    seems like a viable application for the slug mk2 also. That giant duct makes it impractical for most things but slapping that on the back of the desk fan could balance the weight as well as boost performance.

  • @I0NE007

    Only concerns, currently, would be: finger guards (some kind of cage / mesh-plate to prevent anything from getting jammed inside) and increasing the weight of the base so it doesn't blow/vibrate itself away.
    I would also really like a way to clip it onto a vertical support, but that's an entirely different base with additional coil springs.

It provides a nice cool breeze (as the name suggests), but on really hot days I wish it would blast more air in my face. Noctua however is my absolute favorite brand when it comes to fans and cpu coolers, so I am definitely looking forward to a desk fan from them.
