- I have seen a lot of fans, I have even made a few and so have you. But today is a bit special, we are going to test out some of the BEST cooling fans on the market to see what fan is really the best of the best. Also we are going to throw in the Fan Showdown current first place fan to see where it stacks up.

Clearly the best fan is the one which came with the Noctua cooler I just bought. Now justify my purchase by verifying my confirmation bias and soothing my feeling of buyer's remorse.

However Noctua also does things like lifetime socket mounting kit upgrades for their coolers.

So i can still use my cooler and dont have to buy a new one when i switch CPU sockets again. So the like 15€ more for for the noctua cooler paid off already.
@@matasa7463 I mean of course anything electronic can fail, but case fans are about the last component I would worry about. They are mechanically extremely simple, and they're also very cheap per unit in case the lighting strikes, so to speak. Good customer service on more serious components like GPU or CPU, RAM, SSD, etc is very valuable. But for fans, i couldn't care less. As long as I receive the product I buy, and it's not broken from factory, that's enough.
I'm kinda disappointed that he didn't test Arctic's P12 and F12. It'd be great to see how it stacks up against these fans, and the fans in fan showdown!
from what i recall the P12 is like 90% up there to the noctua and costs about 6 bucks a pop
agreed the P12co is an amazing fan for the bucks and really really disappointed to not see it in here.

I tested the P12 extensively and it won't reach the performance of any of these other fans because of its low top speed. I measured the P12 top speed at roughly 1600rpm, which is not even close to the likes of the A12x25 (2000rpm) or the Gentle Typhoon (2150rpm). One thing going for the P12 is that it is very good value for money.
@@FanPhys its a trade off between blade pitch and rpm. so direct rpm comparision isnt quite optimal either. also p12 co uses actual ball bearings which have my preference as all the oil/bronze/sintered bearings wear out in 2-3 years
I still have my Gentle Typhoons from before they even made a PWM version. It's still running perfectly after 10 years.

I can confidently say (after watching more fan comparison videos than I honestly care to admit) that it would come in 3rd place just behind the gentle typhoon in pretty much every test.
But the fact you can get 5 of them for the price of 1 of the others will always make it the best fan on the market imo.
Thanks for this amazingly comprehensive test! All those different setups are a great value addition over the usual 'only radiator' that fans are tested on. Appreciate Phanteks for sending that over.
I love that you test the fans in a pull config through filters. Almost no one else is doing that even though it's the most realistic case fan use case!

My CPU is cooled by a TIO-541-E1B4 it's the only way to go.

@@cadetsparklez3300 Eh? I avoid ASUS motherboards and ASUS in general. The first one I had was DOA, the replacement one was also DOA. I gave them another chance a few years later, and it had its hardwired rear I/O audio backwards, so left comes out right and right comes out left. I tried to RMA it, but they refused and said to send it back to the store I bought it from, which was NCIX which was going out of business so I was out of luck. The ASUS monitor I bought from NCIX, which had a 36 month warranty, also died just over a year after I bought it, they told me to send it back to the company I bought it from, I told them NCIX went out of business, and they refused to help.
@@cadetsparklez3300 Gentle Typhoons back then when it launched disappeared as soon as stocks were replenished. Today they have more competitors (basically copies of their design) but are still excellent. It is funny because Nidec Servo is a VERY LARGE company that basically doesn't care about the domestic market and the only reason we had those available was because Scythe made a large order from Nidec. And the one they made(scythe) to replace the Gentle Typhoon when whatever happened that Nidec decided to not renew or ask for more money or whatever, sucked in comparison.
@@KarolusTemplareV XPG now sells an improved version of Nidec GT as Ventro Pro 120. Of course, XPG can't beat Noctua's marketing and Nidec doesn't care.
Really cool that the Typhoon is still so good. It even seems like there is room for improvement like blade clearance and possible advancements in the bearing design.
Yeah I noticed the blade clearance looked bigger on the Typhoon than the other fans. But maybe their material stretches more? Or I missed a detail, this video was THICK on the info.
Gral Nrath's assumption is correct, the material stretches too much. Impossible to improve blade tip clearance without using LCP or you get resonance issues (weird specific rpm-range noise) like the Arctic P12/P14 (850-1150RPM) have. Heck even with LCP u can get it like the Scythe Wonder Snail. Bearing/motor def needs to be different, the double-ball bearing is why Gentle Typhoon is useless (a huge chunk of the world population cannot tolerate the grind noise).

This channel is awesome, I like the Fan built fan testing and stuff found it interesting that design plays a big part in cooling.

There is a reason that the GT's were undisputed king for waterloops back in the day, and it seems they still hold up to this day, Dazmode was selling all black models at one point as well, plus some other companies made clones and copies of them.
I would love to see Arctic P12's, Noiseblocker eLoops, BeQuiet SW3's and Coolermaster make a wannabe A12x25 called the Masterfan SF120M, would be interested in seeing how they stack up as well.
I need one of these. My place is hot all year round and having a bit of white noise from my PC is something I always enjoy.

Look up Arctic's P12 fans. There's a pack of 5 I'm looking at on Amazon right now for only $30. They're very quiet and efficient.
Dude. It's worth it. Such a big difference fans can make. My case literally blows cold air out the back while under load.
@@crayder1100 You either run max fans with a very open case or have weak components. I can feel the heat out if my case with 8 140mm noctuas at 60pct. I only have a 5700xt and r5 3600.

Everyone knows that RGB its a photon force that improve the PC, and the collors have their own mean, Red = Power, Green = Energy and Blue = refrigeration, with no RGB a fan just blow wind.

For those of you learning about fans, the Arctic P12 often comes up in "best" lists because it is like 90% as good as premium fans for about 25% of the price of a premium fan. They are the go-to budget option.
Also the p12 slim for a slim 120mm showdown! Would be useful too to compare the slims to the regular versions
Then an airflow showdown would be cool too! Arctic F12, Silverstone Air Penetrators AP121 and FM121 (those can get as loud as a jet)
Arctic are a great budget option, basically the king of performance per dollar.. but there's one thing that you get from the premium options which you don't get from Arctic - durability
I see noctua and scythe fans running for over a decade and still performing great, whereas my old Arctic fans were pretty much all dead within 4 years.
That said I could have replaced them all twice over and still come out cheaper in the end, so for most people that's still probably worth it

The Gentle Typhoon has actually received several revisions since it was initially released in **2007** and was available from a company called Dynetics, it was not initially released in 2009. The first two fans released were the D0925 and D1225. It was updated for Scythe in **2008** with the 'industrial' version D1225C_hi. Scythe released the 92mm, 120mm, and 120mm_hi versions with several RPM ranges. The 120mm variant went as low as 1150RPM, with the 120mm_hi variant going all the way up to 4250RPM.
The most recent update to the D1225 is the D1225C12B6 - which is the black variant made for DarkSide Computers.

Still rocking my Gentle Typhoons (1850RPM) since 2012, only two for the cooler as I moved to 14cm but they're amazing, but the other 3 are still on the old case working.

Is there any chance you could re-group the final dataset by test type, and then label each fan? It would make it easier to compare fans against each other in each test.
Looking at it, the Notctua really closes the gap on the 120mm test. Within a couple CFM, desptie being 5mm thinner.
Gentle Typhoon for the win! My six gentle typhoons and a WD 750GB hard drive are the only parts that have carried over into every single build/upgrade of my PC since 2013
I bought Noctua NH-D14, I think in 2011. It was the first version with fans having 3 pin with PWM adapter / splitter. Fans still work without a single problem.
The thing about Noctua is, you pay premium that will last you for years to come.
Pretty sure I'm gonna fill my case with Arctic's P12 and P14 fans. The white ones, and add the Phanteks Halos. The P12 should have been in this test.

Great video, you should do one with budget fans! I currently have Artic Cooling P12 PWN in 4 of my PCs at home for the family, primarily because I can get a 5 pack for 40usd. Would love to know how they stack up!
Well they are quiet, I bought more expensive fans before that made noise, or sounded unpleasant. I was using the F14's but I've gotten a bequiet case and it came with fans. One other thing is the Artic fans PWM never resulted in the chirping sound I've seen happen on other fans
@Major Hardware: Thank you so much for the extensive work and scientific data you produce to make our environment quieter.
But one thing still puzzles me: you choose to normalize noise, and then compare the CFMs, but I would tend to think that the ultimate useful comparison would be to do the reverse... Let's say that I have a CPU that needs to run at X °C, then I need a fan that produces Y CFM... almost every fan should be able to produce this cooling, but the best fan is just the one that produces the less noise for this air output.
And since not everybody have a good mental representation of the dB scale, my dreamed comparison would be to normalize all fan to a given CFM sufficient to cool a CPU (core I7 or similar), and then provide us with a recording of the noise, using the same mike gain for all fans.
And just a shout-out, just for the fun: Why is the fan industry is using the cfm unit all over the world? I mean, there is the minute that is still in common with the metric system! Couldn't they use another time unit? I could suggest something alike the imperial spanner system, eg: 1/16th of a solar month...

@Major Hardware Have you ever had the opportunity to test Arctic fans (F- or P-Series)? At least in Germany they are always considered a well performing budget option because they seem to offer quite a lot at a really competitive price, e.g. a pack of 5 fans for 28 EUR (~33 USD).

I "believe" that these axial fans would work better on push configuration. Especially if the blades are in directly against the fins. And like some others suggested, Arctic P12:s would be nice to have in here also.

For those of you asking about Noctua’s 3000rpm fans, according to their own data, the nf-f12x25 ippc 3000 rpm will move 109.88 cfm of air at 43.5 dba at full tilt. The nf-a14 ippc 3000 rpm will move 158.5 cfm at 41.3 dba at full tilt. Noctua still hasn’t released the a12x25 ippc variant yet for what I assume is the same reason they haven’t released the Chronomax.

I just built a new watercooled rig for a buddy, he picked Noctua NF-A14 Industrial PPC-3000RPM fans.
Everything is great once the fan curve was set, but if you want max then oh boy is it loud.

They weren't quiet, but they moved a *_LOT_* of air.
I have 10 BeQuiet Silent Wings 3 on my O11D XL. 7 as case fans running at 700-1200 rpm depending on the load, and 3 for the AIO ( Liquid Freezer II 360).
And they are so good. They're not cheap i know, but man they look nice, perform very well and are so quiet. I'm gonna use them in a custom loop soon
Noise is my #1 and I like the noctua fans as I can get great cooling and very low noise. I had a vantec tornado in college and while it cooled it was also loud AF
Gentle Typhoon 2150 is now being sold under the name XPG Vento Pro 120 pwm. I love these fans since I have been using Gentle Typhoon 1850 by NIDEC SERVO 6 years ago and still running inside my built. Would like to see the test for the new Gentle Typhoon under XPG for their performance comparing with their older brother.
For the graph for Noise Normalized, you should specify that more CFM is better, either on the graph somewhere, or by saying it.

Whichever bar is longer is "behind" the shorter bar, in that way it is easy to see the differences.
or alternatively, make another graph where you subtract whichever is the long one from the short one & only display the differences.
Great vid and comparison as always 👌 but I’ve always thought.. What about the EK-Furious Meltemi 120 (1200-3500rpm)? I don’t think you’ve ever compared this in any of your 120mm tests.. it’s a great preforming fan!
You can always add Phanteks Halo to get some sort of RGB if you really need it.

Thanks for including noise normalized results. I voted for full blast when you had the poll up, but it didn’t occur to me until later that’s how I run my own fans, noise normalized or just at minimum RPM.

Now the last piece of the puzlle unfortunately is also the one which is pretty much impossible to test: Durability. If you run all these fans in a normal-dusty environment - how would they perform in a year? Maybe Phanteks is sure about winning this as well and you can request a time machine.

The T30 has solid advantages if you have the depth for it. Even though its a 16.67% increase in depth of the overall fan, its closer to a 27.78% increase in fan blade depth. And as the saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement.
Still probably would go for Arctic P12's because I'm cheap. But if they Have the T30's on a case, well I'd definitely keep them.

I would actually like to see this T30 vs the Noctua NF-F12 as this is also a 3000 RPM fan that is said to have a max dBA of 43.5. This fan would be more of a direct comparison in noise, performance and cost.
I’m running 6 now 10yo gentle typhoons on my 360mm radiator, fans have outlasted multiple systems, absolute beasts

Shout out to all my gentle typhoons, I have had some running nearly 24/7 for around 8 years, they still work perfectly and are super silent.
My cheap fans from 10 years ago are still purring quietly. That is the best bang for my buck.

It's a updatet Nidec GentleTyphoon Desing with PWM, daisy chain and integrated Anti Vibration Pads from ADATA.
It cost around 20€
I’ve been researching High static pressure fans for month now.
I narrowed it down to the Thermaltake B-12 & the Scythe Wonder snail 300-2400 rpm for my Scythe NInja 4 in a push/pull config.(noctua is off the table because of price).
I decided on Scythe wonder snail 300 - 2400 rpm even though I’ve heard some complaints about resonance @ certain rpm.
I don’t care if my system sounds like a Jet engine for occasional productivity but I want silence for mundane net usage & gaming. 👌
So how is the Wondersnail fan? Are they good?

I would like to see a comparison with Arctic p12s. You can get a 5 pack of them for like $30 or the price of one Noctua or T30. Going with the p12s would save you $120 over going with 5 Noctuas which would be enough to jump up a tier of GPU or CPU. The p12s are daisy chainable as well which is really nice especially for itx builds.
High end fans aren't made for budget users... Quite clear if you're weighing on whether to save $130 on fans to put toward other components then you're not in target audience of these fans.
Take the Scythe and Gentle Typhoon and stack them please!! Contra-rotating perfection!!!
Noctua actually advertise their nf a12 as an all-round fan, so the comparison is still fair in all aspects whether is airflow or air pressure.

XPG is selling the GT PWM version with some rubber pads on it and a nicer cable for $20 now too so it's a no brainer if you don't mind ball bearing fans. Thermalright also has a new GT inspired design they are selling for $23.

I think I need clarification on a thing. You talked specifically about using the fans in a pull configuration. But, I never caught any overt details that you also ran them as push.

@@CenPapi Ah, damn. Well, that's kind of a problem. That's the entire point behind high static pressure fan designs ─ better push than pull. I also suspect that's where the Phanteks fan will fall down, in keeping with reviews of Corsair's fairly similar mag-lev fan.
You're right, he didn't do a push configuration. I could be wrong, but I think the reason he didn't do that is because he doesn't have the right measurement tools to get the PQ curve of the fans. To date the GT fans perform the best in noise normalized pressure tests. Martin's Liquid Lab (respected water cooling guru) did tests years ago on this, alas no one has been able to replicate what he's done.
@@pkpnyt4711 Right equipment? To do what? He already has the basic gear to do a minimum standard test already on display in this video. The point to HSP fans is to push through a rad or against/around objects like HDDs. They don't excel at pulling. Even Cooler Master got kinda spiky about that issue with their initial MasterFan marketing. So, if they're all run at max RPM, then at a noise normalized standard, the end result will still be relatively serviceable data. It's not like barometric pressure numbers will matter if two otherwise equally performing fans can't get the air out the other side of the rad as one another. It's strictly about how much air gets through and out.
Granted, I would love to see standardized content on pressure differences between case mounted fans. But, that requires a lot of preset conditions and seems to be out of the cards for reviewers right now. I only remember that Linus Tech Tips did a bit a few years ago where they determined pressurized cases were the best config, and I _think_ Gamers Nexus has fan testing inbound but probably not until they get their new location built.
I got me a push-pull config with my Hyper 212 Evo V2. Both Cooler Master Sickle Flow 120 fans. Keeps my CPU nice and cool even when its warm in my room. x3
If live to see you take a look at the Noiseblocker eLoop, especially the airflow pattern with smoke.
It is a somewhat unique fan blade design that's actually on production.

Any chance you could try a off-brand fan like the Artic F12 branded ones? They're $5-10 a fan from amazon with PWM. I currently have 5 of them in a case and am wondering if the savings (100 freedom dollars) was worthwhile.
You should really test the Arctic P series! They are probably the best.
Price to performance is unbeatable.
I'm curious if there would be any benefit to using the wonder snail in a push pull config on a tower cooler with another fan. since it rotates in the opposite direction, what would that do? help, hurt, make more noise?
