I always wondered about the Amadeus situation.....I love the film, but I still reel in awe and excitement at the thought of your portrayal! I could listen to you recount your history for hours! The same reason your books are so captivating! It makes me so happy to think of you and Mr. Tom Hulce sharing wonderful memories! It sounds like long lost brother and sister to me!!! Thank you, so much Ms. Meg! This channel is a DREAM come true!

Wow. A successful, famous actress who’s also legitimately nice. I saw the stills of you in the costumes. You looked gorgeous. And I could tell from watching him speak on the documentary of the film’s making that Hulce was crushed you two didn’t get to film together.

A few days ago, the video of F. Murray Abraham winning the Best Actor Oscar for playing Salieri in Amadeus appeared in my UA-cam feed for some reason. I'm a classical musician, and naturally, I'd seen the movie a few times. So I clicked on the video. As Abraham is giving his speech, there are quick shots of fellow Best Actor nominee Tom Hulce in the audience. Near the end of his speech, Abraham talks about how the only thing he'd wish for more than winning the Oscar is that Tom Hulce could be standing right next to him at that moment. He said it with a great deal of emotion, which made it hard to tell if he was being really sincere are just indulging in maudlin BS.
Anyway, they kept cutting to Hulce for reaction shots; his facial expression was a combination of a slight smile and a slight grimace. One might assume this was because he hadn't won the award, but there was something about his expression that made me wonder if it indicated some sort of history between him and Abraham. It seemed curious enough to prompt me to see if Abraham had a reputation for being a less-than-ideal colleague. Bingo. In terms of the lie he told your husband, I can't even imagine what his motivation might have been.
I do appreciate your willingness to talk about your experiences.

Sweet ! Watching this was a marvelous way to end the week, dear Meg ! Though of course to learn about that horrible lie that F Murray Abraham told about you is so heartbreaking ! I have lost all respect for that man. And how sad you lost that great part due to that injury. Bummer ! But you bounced back to be the wonderful person you are today: award winning actress, successful author, beloved wife and loving mother & grandmother ! Bless your heart ! And that song you sang at the end really touched my heart ! I am not familiar with that Yuletide tune but I adore your voice ! Hope you & Don have a great weekend ! Dear Meg
I am sooo sorry that you were not able to play Constanza in Amadeus. Hearing you speaking about this role with such an emotion(that was one of your dreams to play this character and you couldn't fulfill it)...I can't even imagine how devastating this was to you... The story with F. Murray Abraham is also shocking...he also should have won an Oscar for being such an asshole to someone...spreading false rumors about 2amazing people was malicious!!! It is hard to imagine that he almost ruined your marriage with his stupidity. Meg, you are such a talented actress and a wonderful human being. You have achieved sooo many things in your life!!!...I have the same opinion on Tom Hulce. Meg, you know what?! Probably I should not write this in the comments, but when I was a teenager, I had a crush on Tom Hulce 😃I always thought that he was a handsome, sexy, sweet guy 😉(I am using past tense because Tom is nearly 70, and obviously people do age, but that was always my opinion).
Also it is still unbelievable that Amadeus was shot in 1983, I was born in 1986 in Czechoslovakia!!! It is a fenomenal classic movie made by a great director. I was also wondering, what Constance Mozart would be like if you played the part. Thanks for sharing your story with such a honesty. I wish you all the best in your life.
Many hugs from Central Europe(Vienna) 😊

My mother would bring me along to everything, including movies that were not child friendly persay. This is a great video, really fantastic. Amadeus is an excellent film. Elizabeth Berridge did a great job as Constanze, but I’m sure you would have been great as well. F. Murray Abraham did an excellent job as Salieri, but I can see how he could be a jerk. Sometimes the best actors and actresses can come off quite rude, regardless if they mean to come off that way or not. Tom Hulce was incredible as Mozart. One of the best film performances I’ve seen. All the performances were really stellar in Amadeus and Milos Forman was an incredible director, RIP. I actually wish Hulce won the Academy Award that year as I was so engaged with his performance more than Abraham’s and found him to just be so charismatic in the film, but Abraham did an excellent job too. At the very least, it would have been nice to have seen them tie, but I know the Academy doesn’t really do that. Only two occasions have resulted in there being ties with performances, but I believe they’ve changed the rules so that doesn’t happen again. Again, great video. It’s nice to hear you talk about Tom Hulce.

I felt kind of okay with the fact that FMA won the oscar instead of Tom, because they were both amazing..but after hearing your story it actually makes me a bit bitter he won instead of Tom..what a horrible thing he did. How cruel is that?
Tom Hulce is just as I expected him to be..a sweetheart

During the years I lived and worked in Los Angeles, I became friends with a wonderful lady who used to coach actors in Yiddish (for instance, if the part they were playing would require some convincing use of it). Actually, you remind me a lot of her! Very bubbly and friendly and kind! Anyway, apparently she'd had to coach F. Murray Abraham for some part or other, and described him to me as an awful anti-semite that she did not enjoy having to work with. It's really a shame. I'm sorry that happened to you, but I do wish your husband had spoken up at the time, too. How awful to be sitting on such an ugly lie, believing it true for at least a year!

It was an unfortunate situation all around. I'm just happy it's all in the past and I'm so grateful to be in the place I am now! 😊

What do you think of actors who make "secret" hand signs during their performances? Is it their choice or do the directors/industry push these signs and beliefs on them? Why do you think it is so important to these actors/directors/industry to give these secret society signs? I get it when politicians make these silly signs but it always seems to take away from an actor's performance when they break character to be religious/political/spiritual. I know I ask some tough questions, this one may be too hot to handle. Most people are unaware of these signs and their meanings (that often boggles my mind). Actors, especially the young women, seem to delight in learning these signs and giving them during their performances. I would really doubt that they truly understand what they are doing when they mimic their older actor peers. What do you think?

Hi Jake! I've never heard of this, but I've not been in the business for a while, so maybe it's something new that has cropped up. Personally, I wouldn't do that. It would seem disrespectful to my character.

I don't want to knock Elizabeth Berridge because she was terrific in the movie, but I think Amadeus would have been even better if you played Mozart's wife. You have the right European look whereas Berridge looked too American. Just my opinion.

A broken foot and a strip search - Berridge got off lightly. I am curious as to what you make of her performance? I honestly am in awe of her skills.
Also - Tom is gay, isn’t he? So the affair rumour is ridiculous.

I've always loved and respected F. Murray.
Very few actors have his passion and drive. He earned the Academy Award.
Tom did a FANTASTIC job, which FMA always acknowledged. But FMA performance was undeniable. Strong, resolute and committed.
I've been in The Business for 20+ years and I've never disparaged any other actor no matter how I felt personally. So I was greatly disappointed to see it happen here.
I'm not familiar with you or your work, but I hope that you can find it in your heart to be a little more kind in your future.
Godspeed and I wish you well and all of the best.
    Peace.

Thanks for your note. I'm glad his acting has brought you pleasure. Personally, working with him is an experience I would never want to repeat.

Shocking to know that F. Murray is so bad of a person, whenever I listen to his interviews, he seems nice, but perhaps that veneer belies the fabric you mention.

I was shocked at what he did to me. I had never been rude or done him any harm. However, anyone can grow. Have regrets and become a better person. I hope for the world and the people in his life that he has.
