Brisbane Airport’s future International Terminal revealed

- Your International Terminal is undergoing a dramatic revamp that will revoluntionise the passenger experience with the most significant upgrades to the terminal since its opening 29 years ago.
Driven by the need to upgrade security screening equipment to meet Australian Government standards by the end of 2025, Brisbane Airport is transforming Queensland’s gateway to the world.
The work at the International Terminal includes relocation of security and passport control to Level 4 with enhanced security screening equipment, plus self-service check-in and bag drop linked to an upgraded baggage system. The retail stores including food outlets will be overhauled with an expanded duty free experience.
This is all part of the $5 billion Future BNE transformation of Brisbane Airport over the coming decade.

I really dislike self-service kiosks, I will always look for a manned desk to checkin. I hope they dont remove all the counters :(
It's disappointing to see the removal of the sitting area & farewell balcony on Level 4. As someone who's arrived before check-in opens, having an area to sit before security is really important. Disappointingly, it seems the shifting of security & passport control to Level 4 only means more duty free (really the last thing anybody wants).
Depends , sometimes they can have good deals , very good occasionally or if you’re wanting something . Agree on sitting area level 4 , but hopefully the cafes just inside are ok & have good air conditioning
@@Vaptomwen Not everybody will want to sit in the cafe cause they would have to purchase a item from the cafe just to sit there and still wont be able to see there loved ones leave
@@davidburnett3533 valid point , but I’ve(we’ve )been drop & go for years , airport parking fees & there little point once go past security . I will miss my coffee overlooking departures from Corretos ?
Not a single extra gate, a worse level 4, and more duty free. The same uncomfortable seats in the departure hall. The disappearance of the iconic departure feature down to security and immigration. No public view of aircraft.
It’s quite disappointing because it feels like they’ve barely made any improvements. In fact, the changes seem to have made things more inconvenient and less visually appealing. Having traveled through many airports around the world, this one stands out as the most underwhelming upon returning home. It’s a bit unusual.
Is it just me or does the security and passport control seem inadequate to handle peak passengers?
Additionally I find it interesting that the security control is fully open and visible to the public at the check-in area.
Singapore's Jewel cost $1.5b to build from bottom up. Why does it cost $5b to upgrade this airport without much change?
Exactly my thoughts, when I saw $5 billion, I immediately thought it may edge closer towards Singapores Changi Airport in terms of size, entertainment options, or relaxation areas that act as an attraction as well, such as butterfly gardens. It's the same with Brisbanes new casino. Everything is just disappointing. Nothing is built in design that uniquely captures QLD either
Hi, Future BNE is not one project. It’s a series of major projects, including the International Terminal upgrades. The $5 billion of investment planned over the coming decade includes a third passenger terminal, major refurbishments to existing terminals, the region’s best connected commercial land, and much more. Exactly, the high level corruption politicians making big profits out of it. Goldcoast trams could be built on esplanade but rather they building in highway where the most movement for the traffic is so that they can get more approvals for high rises. It used to take 15 minutes from Goldcoast airport to broadbeach now 45 minutes to an hour going to Brisbane is faster than going to Goldcoast Airport.
😂😂😂😂 becz rip off
I would like there to be some sensory rooms spread out across both the domestic and international terminals. These would be quiet spaces tucked away near restrooms for people who have disabilities, sensory issues, anxiety and first time flyers, to provide a calming environment before boarding their flight. This would be an innovative first for an airport and would enhance passengers experience.
@brisbaneairport
Working towards the airline dream of eliminating staff and going completely d.i.y.
And all that money spent while we still have single aerobridges at most gates for widebody aircraft and an arrivals immigration processing area which is hopelessly inadequate during the morning peak.
Have to agree on the arrivals area. It's an absolute mess and desperately needs an upgrade. We had three flights land around the same time, and it was pandemonium.
It al looks fantastic but i have a question or 2,
1, Where will the people be able to say goodbye to there family anf friends before they go through security.
2. I heard a while back there was to be a viewing area were the families can go watch the planes takes off without uninterrupted views from taxing to lift off
Is this still going to happen ?
Hi David, the enhanced screening equipment needs to be installed on Level 4 due to the size and weight of the new equipment. There will still be farewelling opportunities for families on Level 4 to say goodbye to family and visitors before they head through screening and passport control.
Before COVID we did have plans for a new planespotters area towards the New Runway, however those plans (along with many other projects) had to be put on hold indefinitely due to COVID. We are revisiting many projects at the moment, and are advocating for a new public spotters area to be considered as part of the Terminal 3 precinct plans. In the meantime we are also hoping to be able to upgrade the current planespotters area and will provide an update when more information is available.
Please keep the "golden gates" at departures.
So many photos have been taken there - it's a Brisbane tradition.
Exactly what I was thinking!
Underwhelming refurbishment others airports has done a lot better even in 3 world countries seems to have come out leap and bounds compared to this disappointment
I wonder when they will want the public to fly the planes too
Looks good so far. Some points: I use duty free on the way in, and the baggage claim hall and arrivals immigration is a mess (why have 2 steps when everyone else has just 1?). I’m looking out for this and refurbished gate concourses in the near future, with ample charging.
Can't wait to return and have a look through all the changes when completed. A very significant change compared to the ones undertaken, whilst I was working there. Looks exciting.
As someone who suffers insane anxiety at airports, this looks terrifying. I'd rather interact with a person not a kiosk, I'd rather have somewhere to sit not be forced to stand on shaking legs.
This looks more confusing than it already is and a overstimulated nightmare.
pardon my french but this overhaul looks kinda "ass"
I think we can do a bit better with the design for the airport's interior new look. Brisbane Airport already looks dated internally and what I see in this video is not really a significant facelift.
Hopefully they replace the uncomfortable timber bench seating in the main departure area on level 3. It's not very inviting or comfortable and not surprisingly I've seen very few people actually sitting on it.
Any plans for the international terminal to be expanded? Now that there is a second runway, international flight operations are still yet to reach optimum pre-COVID levels. I can foresee there are not enough parking gates for an increasing number of international flights. When I arrived in Brisbane back in Feb 2020, my flight waited 45 minutes on the taxiway for an available parking gate. Then, three other international flights arrived after my flight, and they also waited on the taxiway for around 1 hour to park and let passengers disembark.
That’s why they are building a new terminal across from the domestic terminal. It will directly connect to the new runway
How on earth is this $5 billion worth? It looks like a refit of an ageing shopping centre. for $5 billion you should be building a subway system and a whole new terminal. Absolute joke.

I really like this but one simple thing we should do is add sensory rooms to the terminals. This would really help people like me who have disabilities, sensory issues, anxiety and even for first-time flyers. Be a great calming environment tucked away in a quiet space next to the restrooms. Dimmed lights, bean bags, cushions and couches and some natural light. 💡
Totally agree.
@BNE sorry, butt you’re not allowed to remove the walk under departure sign, this is ALWAYS the first holiday pic for nearly everyone leaving! Cancel the whole thing or keep the departures arch!
Stunning.
It's a good upgrade and sorely needed. However what will be the improvement in the arrivals area, it is absolutely chaotic there at times. Whilst I understand the focus will be towards t3 build, I think that the arrivals needs to be looked at last couple of times the line was deep into the duty free area. Speaking of which feels awkwardly situated. Anyway all good things.
Yeah, the baggage collection area and subsequent chaotic customs line needs a total rethink. God help you if you arrive during the afternoon/evening rush! This in my opinion is the most urgent of all BNE upgrades required.
And sensory rooms for people with disabilities and first time flyers or people with anxiety/fear of flying to be in a calm environment
I’m sorry BNE but for $5 billion, it still looks like the same. And some of your improvements are actually downgrading to what it is currently.
Maybe you guys should take hints from Sydney and Melbourne’s international terminal, especially to draw more consumer spendings during the 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Maybe understand how Melbourne international airport stands out compared to Brisbane.
Also maybe travel to international airports overseas and see how organised and exciting the development of its airports. Recently, I went to Incheon Airport in South Korea and I could already tell the difference. It was clean, it had great facilities, and it was well organised. Our international terminal is grotty, boring, and doesn’t have a lot of stores and restaurants in the terminal when you exit.
We also need a redevelopment for our transport system. Why doesn’t buses have their own station at the international terminal just like the domestic terminal. The domestic terminal is much more neater, we’ll organise and have a lot of stores and restaurants to offer before you depart. Why doesn’t the international terminal have those facilities?
Looks wonderful! Hope it ends up with more free drinking water dispensers, (hot, warm and cold) as well as more clean toilets, like China’s airports. Very nice plan on this video! My best wishes to Australia.
$5B for a refurbishment? This is ridiculous. For $5b I was expecting something along the lines of Singapore Airport.
Someone is getting a massive backhander.
I'd be looking into where the money is going, because it's definitely not going into the airport.
There is no way that will cost anywhere near $5b.
I am guessing it would have 20 years to build and cost would be close to 10 Billion. Self check-in kiosk isn't good. Need to save jobs.
Please put more and better seating in the check-in area and after security.
The couches currently in the check-in area are horrid for back support, especially for people with bad backs…
Those deck chairs look nice but get very uncomfortable when having to spend hours sometimes having to await flights. Even memory foam type cushions on them would make a world of difference (current cushions are far and few between)
5BN to renovate the exisiting terminal? christ! why not build a new bigger one.
Looks so boring LOL. can never be the same level as Singapore Airport. You guys need better designers
Nothing about downstairs looks good at all, it's to busy and messy.
Reminds me a bit of HK airport. A lot of whingers here.
Will there be more water bottle filling stations? Having to fill up a bottle at a shitty tap near the toilets is rubbish!
Looks fantastic. Please do not forget to fix the air-conditioning!
So still no hungry jacks at the international terminal?
Lee Laura Miller Steven Martin Christopher
Still one of the ugliest airport in the world
I'm agreeing with the keeping of human beings in jobs instead of "checking myself in" and ALWAYS stuffing it up. Human beings to check us in for our flights please. And BRING BACK MY PASSPORT STAMP TOO! Why am I paying HUNDREDS of dollars for a passport that's gonna stay empty? This is a travel RIGHT! I'd like to look in my passport and have clear and accurate dates and stamps, so I can proudly tell the travel story while showing the passport to my family...
@BNE, the facility isn't able to handle current passenger numbers, yet your plan is to complete your first upgrade in 2025? It took me an hour and a half of queuing to depart in June and an hour of queuing to arrive in July. I hope Wellcamp or Gold Coast pick-up their game and provide you some much needed competition or at least reduce passenger numbers to what the airport can manage.
Pathetic!
It's basically an open warehouse and they have just added shops and cafes. Goodo.
Airports should never have carpets to begin with.
looks all very nice. I would love to see a viewing platform for the families and plane spotters. Have a look at how Zurich (ZRH) airport is done. Not only do they have viewing platforms but you can walk, run or cycle around the whole airport. All we get is a dilapidated little viewing spot to which one has to drive to and the fences make it nearly impossible to get a photo of the planes taxing past the point. What are doing for the plane enthusiasts?
Looking great and please keep the iconic yellow Arc =)
Please find a way to have a viewing area on level 4… Also it is very clear that green spaces weren’t considered when designing this. The vast amounts of trees and plants were what set BNE apart.
It’s great that the seating area is gone on level 4. Often see couples putting the couches together to form a bed and sleeping there as if it’s their bedroom
fantastic
International airport upgrade; awesome. 5 billion dollars for a refit, inflation must be worse than first thought. I'd like to see the cost breakdown on this one!

Wow this looks amazing. In the meantime Melbourne doesn’t even have a rail link and the terminals are so tired, it’s like the 3rd world. 😢
Brisbane airport is quite tired too but in Melbourne I found it so annoying just to get around the airport
Looks fantastic, any completion date ? Changes to check in time earlier bag drop etc ? I hope the bag wrap improves, I could have wrapped my own bag with 2 passovers of cling wrap from woollies & been better.
Hi, there are multiple projects occurring as part of the International Terminal upgrades. The screening upgrades will be complete by 2025. You can learn more here: www.bne.com.au/corporate/projects/future-bne-projects/international-terminal-precinct/security-retail-upgrade
No one's asked the most important question: What's going to happen to that freakish dog statue?
Hi Luke, I believe the artwork you are referring to was part of "Travellers". This artwork has been deaccessioned in consultation with the artist.
@@brisbaneairport that's a shame, I loved that dog. It always gave me a smile when I visited the airport as representative of our quirky sense of humour and appreciation of the arts in the sunshine state. Thanks for the update though, I will relay the sad news to my wife who was also a fan.
RIP. Hopefully it goes in a museum or somewhere else.
This will be plagued by strikes, finger pointing and an increase in the finished cost of another billion…….I bet.
What do you suggest? We bring in some slaves to build it for free?
Does this mean family and friends will be excluded from the "farewell balcony" on Level 4?
Hi, the enhanced screening equipment needs to be installed on Level 4 due to the size and weight of the new equipment. There will still be farewelling opportunities for families on Level 4 to say goodbye to family and visitors before they head through screening and passport control.
be no one living in brisbane soon cos of the plane noise
If plane noise bothers you then don’t live under a flight path. Or am i missing something?
@@doovyt7 I never used to live under the flight path until they changed it three years ago. If they moved it over your house after 100 years of not being in the flight path you’d be annoyed too.
I live under a commonly used flight bath. Doesn't bother me at all. If it did, I would not have moved here. It's that easy.
@@mrmatymoo lucky you. i didn’t move to a flight path it moved to me. so it really isn’t that easy
$1 billion for the upgrade, $4 billion for this animation.
